You will note there are combined rifle and handgun range safety briefings both days and attendance at one is mandatory. We take your safety seriously and ask everyone who plans to shoot to please also plan on attending this important briefing. All shooters are asked to check in with an RSO (sporting an Orange Cap of Dorkiness for easy identification) upon your arrival at either of the ranges who will answer questions and direct you to an open firing position. The RSOs wield unspeakable power so it is in your best interest to be nice to them. If you are a novice shooter, or even have never been to the range before and think guns are icky, you are welcome to shoot! Just see an RSO and they will set you up with an experienced shooter to help you. If you miss the mandatory range safety briefing which is mandatory and must be attended, all is not lost. See an RSO to plead your case, be harangued and chastised, and then spend some punishment time on the Disciplinary Range of Shame. In the interests of time and to save yourself the humiliation, please make it to the scheduled range briefings. Thanks. Please plan on stopping somewhere along your way to Texas and picking up some ammunition if you plan to shoot and aren't bringing your own weapons. Everyone is very generous with sharing, but please don't rely on the generosity of others to provide everything for you. You can really help out by grabbing a box of 9mm or 5.56mm or whatever you want to shoot. If you are attending the TXMoMe this year, and all the cool kids are, please keep an eye on this section for important information and updates in the coming weeks! I also want to reiterate the TXMoMe is not a gun thing with some socializing attached, but rather is a social thing with some shooting attached. If you aren't a shooter, I guarantee you will not feel out of place and will have a great time. No fooling! Are all y'all getting excited? Weasel are!! Hello Gun Thread!
Safe queens is a very personal thing, I think. I don't like to own anything I don't use; it does nothing for me. So safe queens are completely out. It's easy to understand why other people would want to own something beautiful, something filled with history, or something that's like art, and never use it. It's just not for me. I do own a couple of guns I don't shoot, but I'm just biding my time until I figure out how/where to sell them. Posted by: Splunge at October 06, 2024 07:04 PM (hmKaK) 9

The big Texas Stars turn more slowly (to start), and it’s possible to get “fratricidal” benefit if you knock off a plate at the top and it falls and takes out another one.
Favorite stage evah was 2 big TX stars in front of a Polish plate rack (spinning version of a plate rack). Think you had to alternate each hit, star/star/rack, and of course it got crazy pretty quickly. Posted by: rhomboid at October 06, 2024 07:08 PM (uMKV8) 22

Hello Weasel and fellow Horde members...
First, WOW to WBG's shooting. Someday... Second, two range sessions this week. During the first one the shooting got a bit wonky, so stopped, went thru the 28 things on the fundamentals list, and was able to self correct. That itself is very satisfying. Shot consistently and in tight groupings. So, today I decided to change things up. Instead of shooting a mag of 5, loaded 6 and starting from a low ready position shot 2 rounds, returning to a low ready position and kept repeating. At first it was rather spastic. But I found this forced me to narrowly and quickly focus on fundamentals and it didn't take long til I was shooting primarily in the inner circle of the target. Will continue with this, speeding up the process and moving out the target...but seriously, I shot better and more consistently this way than when I was standing still and had all the time in the world Posted by: Grateful at October 06, 2024 07:20 PM (IQ6Gq) 45

I've got a number of safe queens (high condition M1911/M1911A1s, trench guns, etc.) that I won't shoot for a couple of reasons: 1) Older bluing jobs on vintage firearms aren't as durable as modern ones. Destroy the bluing and it can't be brought back unless you put more $$ into the firearm than it's worth. 2) Vintage steel isn't as strong as modern steel is. I've heard stories about people taking Gramp's old firearm out to shoot. They didn't mean to do it, but they end up cracking or destroying the firearm because Gramp's gun was too worn from previous use. Posted by: Ed L at October 06, 2024 07:24 PM (yRXSd) 52

Had a very short and frustrating range trip today. Shooting the Kimber with reloads with a new-to-me bullet. Loaded 5, bang, bang, click. Wut? Unload, inspect the round. No sign of a light primer strike or any strike at all. Shrug, reload, click. Reinspect, still nothing. Figured I must have broken a firing pin. Came home, tore it down, and everything looks fine. Kicking myself that I didn't think to just put that round aside and try some others but a broken pin just seemed like the obvious answer so I didn't even try. I'll "plunk test" the rest of the rounds before the next trip.

have you been to the range?
Yes. Yes, we have - with results. My shooting has been getting better in terms of grouping, but still favoring a little low and left. Flinching? Tried really hard and don't think I was flinching. Trigger? Have focused and focused on being better. Think I improved but it isn't obvious what I need to fix. Still a little low and left... Think brain, think. Watch was an acceptable size, so wasn't that. What about the three fingers of the shooting hand wrapped around the base of the gun's grip? Are they pulling the gun when I fire? Hmmm... Changed how much my support hand is doing which let the three fingers mostly rest rather than work to steady the gun. Bingo. Breakthrough. Grouped AND accurate. Was able to replicate. Relief. Now need to build muscle memory with my new and improved technique with practice. We have a path forward... There is daylight. Posted by: TRex at October 06, 2024 07:27 PM (IQ6Gq) 56
something beautiful, something filled with history
Posted by: Splunge at October 06, 2024 07:04 PM (hmKaK) Yeah, if I had something like that - maybe a Revolutionary War rifle from out on the frontier - it might get mounted somewhere everyone would look at it. But I would still take it down and shoot it once a year or so. Carefully, yes, but it would get shot. Because this is how the grandkids' (when I have some) dates would get introduced. "Yep, that's from Fort Scalper in Ohio, from just before the Revolutionary War, Yes, it still works. Don't make me prove it, young'un." Then look meaningfully at him, and tap my pocketwatch. Less successful was firing the darned thing yesterday. About 80% of my shots went high, and I don't yet understand why. I figure it's a bad habit, like so many other bad shooting habits I've had to overcome. Posted by: Splunge at October 06, 2024 07:36 PM (hmKaK) 71

Ditto for hard recoiling pistol rounds as they make my hands swell up like catcher's mitts from inflammation and turn bright red from it.
Will be thinning the herd, I think this coming year but will take pix to post as I clean them and prep them for sale. Lot of WWI and WWII bolt actions, some interesting shotguns, etc. My wife can still shoot all of my handguns okay but I have moved to very heavy double action only pistol (S&W 5946) for home use and a heavy for its size PX4 Storm compact for carry. Decocker only (G model retrofit). I can still shoot heavy revolvers ok (or something like a 32 S&W Long in a lighter one) but cannot reload with precision anymore. Hands feel like gloves are on them due to neuropathy and not flexible enough to reload with precision compared to semi auto magazines. Posted by: whig at October 06, 2024 07:39 PM (bt/Nj) 79

I can't picture myself with a safe queen. The idea of spending serious bucks for a gun I won't shoot is a foreign concept. But I don't 'collect' firearms, I just accumulate them. It would be like buying a book I don't dare to read. (Shivers in horror at the thought.)
The only scenario that I can think of would be to be given or inherit a gun of historical interest or to preserve something for a future generation. Posted by: JTB at October 06, 2024 07:40 PM (yTvNw) 81
GWB, an .58 M1861/3 Springfield muzzle loader would still serve just as well. Or a Winchester 1873 in .44-40. Or a Colt SAA in .45 Long Colt.

54 Had a very short and frustrating range trip today.

70 My big achievement of the day was successfully reassembling my .45 caliber 1911 with full-length guide rod. Those springs are harsh! And the re-assembly process did not resemble the disassembly process.
Less successful was firing the darned thing yesterday. About 80% of my shots went high, and I don't yet understand why. I figure it's a bad habit, like so many other bad shooting habits I've had to overcome. Posted by: Splunge ======== Not necessarily. Depends on your sights and what you were firing. Fixed sights only regulate specific ammo--bullet and powder loads. Depending on whether your combo and barrel length causes shots to go high may be an ammo issue--not you. For example, older 38 Special revolvers are almost always regulated for 158 Gr. SWC that were popular manstoppers in the day. Fire something where the bullet is lighter and faster or slower like a 148 WC and the POI (Point of Impact) will not be the same as the POA (Point of Aim). Can have the same problem with 9mm if the sights are set for 115 gr and fast and you are shooting 147 gr and slow. Grouping usually tells the story which it is. There's a whole range of uses between "museum piece" and "combat carry." EDC is hard on finishes and parts that stick out. I never carry a vintage piece around day after day, even in a shoulder holster.
But shooting is not supposed to hurt a gun. If you have a special one, keep it clean and protected, and take it to the range on special occasions, so you can enjoy it. Use ammunition you know is safe for the firearm. Then clean it and put it back in a safe place. Posted by: Way,Way Downriver at October 06, 2024 07:54 PM (zdLoL) 111

So, range report. Friday, hit the range, found out my weather meter battery had gone dead. (this was a pre-match practice) I also realized my Kestrel had the wrong bullet profile loaded. Practice went badly, too, as I couldn't hit anything on the KYL 500 yard rack.
So, home to clean the rifle, Hit the rifle with Wipe Out, per Weasel recommendation, let sit overnight, ran few patches down the barrel and headed to the match. Also loaded the correct profile on the Kestrel. Part of the pre match ritual now includes making sure nothing has worked loose. I knew I wouldn't be able to foul the barrel before the match started but figured it was good trade-off to not being able to hit anything. I'll be darned if I didn't hit the 10" target @ 1,000 yards within 3 shots and skim the edge with multiple rounds. Then, on to the KYL rack. I cleaned up on that one, going 6 for 12, the 2" target kicking my butt. However, after everything was said and done, I still shot more than well enough to win the match. Posted by: andycanuck (CEzQx) at October 06, 2024 07:56 PM (CEzQx) ---- Somewhat. The barrel harmonics will be different and with a bullet with more mass the "equal and opposite reaction" will be a little greater, but probably not enough to notice unless you are shooting a really light gun. Fired out of long arms, does the bullet weight affect muzzle movement and recoil noticeably?? Posted by: andycanuck Marginally on recoil--there is physics out there but part of the recoil impulse comes from unburnt powder and gas jetting out the muzzle and part of it comes from the bullet. Given the bolt weight on most blow back PCCs, you won't notice it much on recoil as 115 fast and light lesser recoil results though increased recoil from powder/gas. The reverse using 147's. Only way to know for sure about POI and POA is to fire a hundred rounds or so of one brand of ammo. Switch a brand, try again. That is why whatever self defense ammo you choose, YOU MUST FIRE enough rounds through your firearm to confirm POA and POI are the same (or adjust your sights/ammo fired to that) plus reliability. Kludging via Kentucky windage and tricks like 6 oclock are things you will forget in a crisis. Make the ammo match what your sights say or vice versa if using for self defense. Weasel, I need to zero an ACOG, but only have access to a range w/ a max distance of 20 yards. I have GI 25 meter zero targets for M16s/M4s. Should I use those and have the bullets strike a bit high on the target at 20 yards as a Kentucky windage solution to this lack of available distance?
Posted by: Ed L at October 06, 2024 08:06 PM (yRXSd) 138
Another observation regarding the mounting of an optic such as an ACOG. A quick release mount is a bonus, especially if you are confident with iron sighting. Also, when its installed properly, it will hold zero every time. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the congratulations. I'd also mention I hit every single target on the rack but, after I tagged the 2' target, I couldn't hit it again. I pretty much ran the rack straight through.
It's quite amusing, though, because a 174 grain bullet moving @2200 fps really makes a 2" target dance. Posted by: blake - semi lurker in marginal standing (tT6L1) at October 06, 2024 08:09 PM (tT6L1) Posted by: AlaBAMA at October 06, 2024 08:09 PM (rJ7Hd) 141
BTW, what I said goes even more for reloads. Generally speaking wide variations in speed from a chrony of your load result will result in inaccurate loading. If your velocity is far greater than what the reloading manuals say and your point of impact is high , then you need to stop firing asap and make sure that you don't have overpressure loads.
One thing I will also say, on blowback semi auto firearms (and to a lesser extent good ole Browning tilt barrel) are dependent on a certain band of acceptable pressure and acceptable bullet weight to function with reliability and that affects slide velocity--thus extraction and ejection can be a problem. That is why you can get a something like a P225 having problems with +P+ 9mm 115gr fired at 1300-1350 fps can create extraction and ejection problems. It was designed around firing a NATO 124 gr about 1150-1190 fps. You can play around with recoil spring weights but that is about all you can do in firing different ammo function wise--the sighting problem is another issue. 144 #132 Thanks, whig, for the confirmation.
I've bought test boxes of three types of self-defence ammo; and test boxes of three types of 'regular' FMJ ammo that my local dealer also sells in 1,000-packs to see which I and the PCC prefer. I haven't bought it yet but I also will be buying a 5.56 semiautomatic rifle soon that I'll also be test firing with three or four types of rounds as well. Posted by: andycanuck ====== No problem, dunno about Canada, but in the States, SGAmmo and Aim Surplus often get police departments trading in ammo (various departments have policies about how long to keep it) in 50 round boxes rather than the meager 20 round boxes. Price per round is much better and it is primo for determining POA=POI for your self defense ammo. Fortunately the best sd ammo of these are the most often sold that way because police like to buy well performing rounds according to the FBI. Reloading is also a way to emulate but using far cheaper plated or generic type hollow points of the same weight and you figure out powder load for the velocity you need to duplicate via reloads from manuals. 9mm regular pressure is pretty easy to duplicate. @Ed L, a 20 yard zero will probably have you hitting the bad guy out to 250 yards, giving or take, depending on the round, aiming center mass. The thing which may be off is windage. The only real way to check windage is to move the target out to 100 to 200 yards.

If you may find yourself in CQC.situation, (and whom amongst the Horde will not? Excepting nurse with her bear spray dispenser in her purse/bag/fist while she stalks hobos on the streets of Seattle) are no bueno!
A watch strapped to one's wrist with a strong durable band is an anchor point for a felon grabbing your wrist. *Aikidoka extends hand toward unsuspecting hobo* "Here! Grab my wrist! " That is the lesson in CQC in the dojo today. REAL operators wear a Casio G-shock in an enlarged buttonhole on the top button of their shirt/jacket/ blouse, etc. If you must wear a watch on the wrist turn it so that the face is on the inside of the wrist. It requures less movement to do a time check and it is easirer to do it surreptitiously. Disregard all of the above if the watch is just an expensive fashion statenrnt or bling. In the previous century, the vast majority of the world's militaries carried sidearms, primarily by NCOs and Officers, as badges of rank, vs. actual fighting arms. Thus, the prevalence of .32s and similar chamberings, in smaller, lighter pistols. They'd certainly kill a man, but not necessarily as quickly as one might like. And so, two entire world generations arose and were trained to not be in awe of the military sidearm, *any* military sidearm. Those were the most who "underrated" the 1911 in .45 ACP. A mistake not made twice, whether they lived to reconsider, or not. As to the MoMeet. Circumstances require that I travel this year, much more lightly loaded than previous. If there is a particular weapon of mine that you'd wish me to bring, or item of equipment, please let me know. I'll try to include it for you. Posted by: Ed L A bit sharper impulse than a 9mm but not bad in the smaller and lighter bullets used at the end by the Border Patrol and a few others. Shoot them in 155-165 gr or 135 gr screamers rather than the old 180 gr subsonics. Those hit like a 357 Magnum in 125 gr HP did. The 180 gr duplicated the old 38-40 revolver cartridge ballistics intentionally. Decent round but more recoil with no increased terminal effect compared with the lighter and faster self defense bullets. Generally does not have the gilt edge accuracy that some older cartridges do like a 38, 357, or a 45 ACP. If you have a 45, terminal ballistics are about the same between a good 40 S&W and a good std. pressure 45 ACP. load. Expansion and penetration close to same. Except the 40 will do it in a smaller and lighter frame that is more easily concealed. Improvement though in 9mm self defense bullets, cost of ammo, and easier training of recruits is what did the 40 in. Not lack of terminal effectiveness. Posted by: GWB Mossbergs are fine for social purposes like some other unsung makes. I would avoid the cheapie cheapie import specials as a number of them have demonstrated a lack of quality and lack of parts. If you buy one, you might get an acceptable one but you might not. Warranty and service might be non existent from actual reviews from people on firearm forums that I have seen. But cheap guns help some folks that cannot afford better in bad situations whether a Lorcin in 25 ACP or a cheap shotgun. That being said, a reliable used name brand can often be about the same price or just a bit more than the new import. Posted by: whig at October 06, 2024 08:52 PM (bt/Nj) 213

1911s that go "click" instead of "bang": Something to check is the "firing pin safety" found on some modern 1911s. They are intended to prevent the pistol from firing if dropped, but can malfunction and prevent the gun from firing.
Commonly referred to as "Series 80" guns, from the system developed by Colt, they come in different proprietary styles. I had one that was operated by the grip safety. If you depressed the safety just the right amount, the hammer would drop but the gun wouldn't fire. I found this to be most distressing. 227 1911s that go "click" instead of "bang": Something to check is the "firing pin safety" found on some modern 1911s.
Posted by: Idaho Spudboy ======= Good point. Schwartz safeties aka 80 series can do that. Designed to prevent the pistol firing when dropped on the hammer. I think some Kimbers have it along with S&W 1911s. I have several Colt Series 80 pistols (1991A1, Mark IV, M45A1) and have never experienced this particular problem personally. I understand that several foreign manufacturers of 1911 clones use the older Schwartz safety design from the 1930s. Colt incorporated the Schwartz safety into its commercial Government Model line beginning in 1937 or so but didn't use them again after WWII. I don't have a Colt w/ a Schwartz safety in it for comparison, though. Of course, Colt's patent on the Schwartz safety has long since expired. Posted by: Ed L at October 06, 2024 09:10 PM (yRXSd) 241

About $125/night plus $16 taxes/fees. Not "cheap" but frickin' Motel 6 is $70+ at most places now and I can say from experience that the Corsicana Motel 6 is a borderline sh*thole and the Red Roof is too but on the other side of the border. Posted by: Oddbob at October 06, 2024 09:20 PM (/y8xj) 248
I think that is why the county generously sets up Stop signs, so that you have a nice reflective target with a center ring on a long enough unobscured sight line to dial in for longer distances. Posted by: Unknown Drip Under Pressure at October 06, 2024 09:21 PM (rHxhM) 249

I've been watching a lot of horror movies lately. And I actually think of Weasel and the gun thread during them.
Sometimes I'm counting bullets fired and think how that must drive you nuts. Or any number of inaccuracies you'd notice that I wouldn't. Or there have been a lot of movies with liberal characters who would find guns icky. But then all crap breaks loose and they go looking for a gun. Or, in tonight's 1980 "Cannibal Holocaust." A professor was just being introduced to his guide. The guide took someone's gun, twirled it around, held it out in front of his face while he looked down the barrel. And I just thought to myself, "Yeah, Weasel and the Gun Thread probably wouldn't approve of that move..." I had to share. All of you have a good week. But for many of you, the best you can manage. It has not worked well for them. They are forced to endure increased pain. They are unable to perform their usual activities of daily living.
