Is This Something? Halloween Reccomendations Edition

A commenter mentioned the Ballerina trailer. It's Ana d'Armas as an assassin from that Russian House of Assassins which, I guess, trained John Wick?

A different trailer makes it look like John Wick will be a major part of the movie, but I imagine that's Dangerous Disinformation and Trailer Fuckery. I bet he's in one six minute training montage, and then a quick "I'm still here" at the end.

I dunno. I have nothing against Ana d'Armas and I don't even care that much that they're doing a female spin-off. I don't like when they replace male characters with a female one, but we know there are literally fifty million assassins in the John Wick world -- as Pitch Meeting guy said, this conspiracy has enough members to swing an election, not by assassination but just by voting -- so sure, why not join in the new Conservative Trend of promoting hot chicks?

But it's a bad time for the girlboss hero, innit it? Dat race been run.

I don't like promoting Netflix but this could be a movie that women like that I could actually watch. Women sure do love their women-in-danger and true crime stuff.

Supposedly a true life story -- by Hollywood standards -- it's about a woman who goes on the Dating Game and winds up being stalked by a bizarro suitor who turns out to be a serial killer.

I think I've heard of this. Based on the timeframe and location, I'm going to guess it's the Night Stalker, right? Richard Ramirez? Nope: Bonhomme says it's Rodney Alcala, who has no serial killer nickname except "The Dating Game Killer." He had a nasty MO: He would repeatedly strangle women to the point of death, then let them revive a little, then strangle them again.

I'm so sick of superhero bullshit that I actually thought this "dark romance" thriller looks not entirely unwatchable. Though I find "Hollywood Sex" to be the cringeiest, silliest, most embarrassing, most preposterous kind of sex, and I'm even including my own in that.

Speaking of, enjoy this compilation of scenes of Jennifer Connelly set to "Space Age Love" song, which is the truly immortal song from the one-hit wonders Flock of Seagulls. (Who actually had a second hit in Photograph and a third in this one, but they weren't very big hits.)

The scenes are from The Hot Spot, which I only saw two minutes of, to fast forward to her nude scene. It seemed kind of boring, apart from that.

I just thought I should throw something in for the guys, to balance out the two other movies.

Kermit the Frog in The Dark Knight. And the interrogation scene.

Movieguik linked this review of four scary movies from 2022, including Smile and Barbarian.

Werewolves. It's a Die Hard type movie where the terrorists are werewolves. Meh.

I saw some trailers on the the Flick Connection YouTube channel. He said these are good.

Cuckoo looks very scary and I'll probably watch it. Watch the trailer through the bike scene.

He says this movie, Abigail, is good too. The gimmick is that six kidnappers are paid to abduct a six-year-old girl and bring her to an isolated house. The twist is the little girl is not a little girl and in fact arranged the "kidnapping" herself -- the kidnappers are the intended victims. The trailer said the people behind Ready or Not are involved in this, and that was good, funny horror.

Speak No Evil and Longlegs look good too. In the latter, a woman finds she's up against a true cosmic horror: Nicholas Cage.

Now that's scary.

Rumor is that it was HEAVILY reshot by the original John Wick director.

And...that the reshoots really helped the movie.

19 I loved DisneyChannel's "Stuck in the Middle" which was a great family show. A latino family, Mom, Dad, and seven kids. No blacks or gays bitching about stuff.

Jenna Ortega had a very interesting video after the show ended. She talked about how in 2015 or 2016, they were casting for a white, blonde girl to play a brilliant inventor named Hillary.

Because of course. Election year with Hillary. Propaganda piece. Bastards.

Jenna went just to be seen. Group auditions. Kept getting called back multiple times. Christmas comes. They're retooling the show.

She goes back in the New Year. Hillary can now be any ethnicity.

Jenna eventually gets the part and what was going to be a Hillary propaganda piece turned into a very sweet, funny show. One of my favorites including adult comedies.

I thought that was an interesting story.

Currently watching a period piece, '100 Days My Prince' which has death, romance, politics, drama and some slapstick comedy mixed in. Beats anything the US is putting out since Better Call Saul ended.

I truly don't know malaka harris' real personality. I'm not sure she has one.

She "acts" every time she's on camera. She "plays" lawyer, she "plays" statesman, some times she "plays" vice president, I've seen her "play" fake motherly, she "plays" angry woman, she "plays" cool and hip.

You'd think with all her practice, her acting chops would be good by now. But she stinks in all her roles she plays.

========

I...disagree with the film's ending on an intellectual level. I don't think it makes sense.

A worldwide EMP wouldn't make steam engines incapable of working, for instance.

But, I see it more as a conflict against corporatization ruining small town appeal. It's anti-globalist with a drunk schmuck at its center for comedic effect. I can dig it.

99 Longlegs is, in two words, not good. Saw it in theater, and even the beer did not help.

Speak No Evil. I recommend catching the original Dutch version (available on Shudder), which I think may be a disguised political commentary on European lassitude in the face of hostile colonization. The trailer for the American version doesn't seem great despite having a good cast.

101 Jennifer Connelly is the baseline of 1.000 in female vertibrate pulchritude.

1.000 being perfection.

For comparison, Gal Gadot is the closest approach, at 0.9673.

All of you guys' wives, and mine, are 0.850.

Flicka, from the first Flicka movie, is 0.467, the highest nonhuman score.

Joy Behar is 0.037.

A female blobfish is 0.001.

I hope this is instructive. Because it's science.

103 Oddity is great. Irish ghost story.

Longlegs requires a big buy-in and that you don't think too much about anything.

The Vordulak is good, if you can handle the puppet.

Strange Darling is excellent. Slasher/thriller in the QT style but I liked it anyway.

The Substance is terrific. Stylishily directed, a mash-up of Edgar Wright and Wes Anderson. SEVERE body horror.

Speak No Evil: Tense domestic horror. Also...Irish, too? Somewhere in the islands, anyway.

Red Rooms: Not great, but with some outstanding moments. Tense, great acting, interesting story, doesn't quite stick the landing.

Just horror movies in the theater in the last month.

110 Pretty sure Ana d'Armas is a liberal twat. Not that the movie reflects the actor/actress, but saw Knives Out in the theater with wifey who after a coupla margaritas was audibly groaning "propaganda!", "are you kidding me", etc. etc. Knives Out was boring and unfunny trying to disguise itself as Sherlock Holmes-ey with suspense and humor but missing on both while all white people were villainous buffoons but Ana d'Armas's immigrant character was the against-all-odds heroine... She was also a leftist character in War Dogs. But I think she's just leftist herself...

I think this is the guy from the last Hunger Games movie who played the female cousin and all I could think during the entire movie is why would a society that is on the brink of collapse to the point it can't afford fabric for new garments still be funding sex change operations?

I didn't enjoy Longlegs. I hate Nicholas Cage but he was the only good part in it. Oddity and Trap were better and they weren't great.

The movie which surprised me this year was Knox Goes Away. It is about a contract killer who has a form of fast advancing dementia and is surprisingly good with a twist at the end which actually explains things that don't make sense throughout the course of the movie.

178 I enjoyed it, but not nearly as much as the original. It did seem to drag in spots, but Ms. De Armas brought me back to attention, as it were....

At least Mr. Scott didn't go for the retcon that some feared he would and kept Deckard a replicant. Too bad he decided to do the opposite when he rebooted the Alien franchise.

Girlboss badass assassin/spy films have the potential to be good popcorn flicks, as long as you don't try to do the Whedon thing of 90lb waifs pulverizing 350lb gorilla minions.

Stealth kills, sniper shots, evasion, reconnaissance treachery and seduction can be woven together in a compelling, exciting and believable film. Women have had centuries of such exploits going back as far as Delilah betraying Samson.

Rutger Hauer was a tremendous performance who brought depth to the character THAT WASN'T REALLY THERE.

I mean, yeah, he was great, but he's the only character with any depth and it's literally because Hauer insisted.

Burnpit Murder Trial

And they also discuss what is happening with the Menendez Brothers, P.Diddy, etc.

No, the bar for 2049 was indeed set high, given it was a sequel to one of the greatest genre films ever made. I totally get why some viewers were disappointed.

As for Prometheus...I was not only disappointed, I actually didn't even consider bothering to watch the first sequel until this year, when it was on free-V and I literally wanted to waste some time. It absolutely succeed in doing just that.

Prometheus was just so poorly written. The characters were just as one-dimensional as any you would find in a slasher flick — I was literally waiting to see how they would each die...and Ms. Rapace's Shaw is a very, very poor patch on Ms. Weaver's Ripley. I was as hyped for this one as I was for BR2049...but was left angry at having wasted my time and money on it.

214 Ana De Armas was already in a movie with Keanu. It was called 'Knock, Knock' and was about these 2 attractive women tricking their way into a rich guys house for some nefarious purpose I wasn't really paying attention to.

Anyway, she gets her knock, knock knockers out which is why I remember the film at all.
