12 A wonderful, almost photographic quality to this . . . as if a master cinematographer has been at work.

The redhead, I suspect, looks like Annette O'Toole. Her dark-haired friend looks like the sulky type who pouts when things don't go her way.

34 By equating women with the precious aesthetic trappings that surrounded them, Paxton echoed the spirit of the novelist Henry James, who portrayed women as collectible objects in novels such as Portrait of a Lady (1881).

92 Paxton does wonderful portraits with his ability to capture skin tones and clothing. The poses of the people are natural and portray pleasant domestic scenes, nothing dramatic. I can imagine they would be very popular with Boston society of the time. Not things I would hang but his talent is obvious.

I was surprised at his "Nausicaa" painting. Although the nude young women show the same lovely skin tones and natural poses, their expressions and reactions to Odysseus' appearance is rather melodramatic. Also, the background of the sea and mountains is less detailed than his portraits. It looks like an illustration in a young persons version of The Odyssey from the 1890s.

133 Contrary to Ms. Harris’s claim, no abortion statute in the country requires doctors to “wait until the patient is at death’s door” to intervene.

Doesn't matter. A certain sect of women want the right to kill their children - right up until birth. Then they want the right to kill the child if that attempt doesn't work.

They form a large voting bloc, so the modern Democrats - as well as some men - will cater to that bloc. For the Democrats, its political expediency. For many men, its social expediency.

154 Re: the sidebar,
I would absolutely be down for a group listen of the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy radio shows, but the link in the sidebar isn’t just missing episodes, it’s not even the original BBC version to begin with. It appears to be some amateur enthusiast group’s remake.

Be forewarned that the original broadcast aired in the late 70s and was only 12 episodes and sort of ends without a denouement. Adams then went on to turn the story into his series of novels (that’s right, the radio shows actually came first). The first two books are mainly a retelling of those 12 episodes, with some changes made.

In the early 2000s, the BBC produced radio dramatizations of the later books. The “Tertiary Phase,” based on “Life, the Universe, and Everything,” picks up where the original episodes left off (replacing the original narrator, who had passed), and tells a complete story with a proper ending. I generally recommend stopping there.

Worth noting that after the Tertiary Phase, the BBC replaced the original theme song, “Journey of the Sorcerer” by the Eagles, with a re-recorded version that’s not as good. They even went back and replaced it on reissues of the originals.

190 There wa no storm yesterday. But last evening as I was preparing dinner, I heard a loud THUMP from outside. Couldn't imagine what it was. Went to look.

Big branches, some as big around as my leg, had broken off the tree just outside my door and landed on the walkway and grass. Again, no wind, no rain. The wood must have been softened by all the rain we had with Helene and the downpours on Thursday and Friday last week. Ka-CHUMP!

Good thing it wasn't near my car. From now on I'm going to park away from trees at my home dump.

Hi Wolfus,

It might been a bit racy for the time but as it was from a classic like The Odyssey, it could have been acceptable. Especially as the painting was done for adults. The young persons comment was just an impression I had after looking at it. (I do wonder if he just wanted to paint some nudes after all those acceptable fancy dress 'society' portraits. Maybe he was just having fun for a change.)

Muldoon can correct me on this, but body hair - especially in the underarm and pubic areas - is a breeding ground for microbes that cause body odor. So shaving it off would at least cut down on that, so long as one practices good hygiene.

As far as feminine pleasure, I couldn't tell you. I haven't had the experience. But I've never liked pubic hair on a woman, ever since I first knew what it was.

YMMV.

The paper is what gets typed into the system. And whoever wrote that system turned of the address validation.

It is to block drafts, mostly. Those lovely old houses tended to be drafty. the windows and walls were not well sealed, and any fireplace drawing tended to suck heat up the chimney. You're very kind, dear lady.

Next year, perhaps, I will have lost the weight I want and have fixed a few other personal imperfections. And, God willing, there are no more unexpected inroads on my finances, I might be cruising to retirement. In that case, I would come.

Hope you all have a lovely time. Give nurse ratched a hug for me.

So much ugly misogyny on this site today reacting to Harris going on "Call Her Daddy." If the people insulting Harris and slut-shaming Cooper actually listen to the episode, they'll find it's full of personal and political insights, and they'll get why Cooper is filthy rich.

Or maybe - just maybe! - people are critical of Harris talking about sex with some random podcaster when the country is crumbling around her - inflation, open border, escalating war in ME and several states recovering from devastating hurricane?

This is not the behavior of a leader, of someone who's been right there with the president implementing a lot of the policies that created this mess. Normal people see this as avoidance and proof that she's not up for the responsibilities of the job, she's simply seeking the prestige and power of it.

There's this worship of the rich by the left.
They believe that "rich = smart/good" if the rich person is a liberal.
It's creepy how reflexively they'll follow the words of a rich person.

310 I do like this painting, as I do tea services and ballerina dresses, and so on, even as the woman being served in the painting looks like she could use a good dressing down.

Tea Leaves
William McGregor Paxton American, 1909
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 768

Paxton often depicted refined women—such as his patrons’ wives and daughters—at leisure in handsome Boston interiors of the sort they would have decorated and occupied. By equating women with the precious aesthetic trappings that surrounded them, Paxton echoed the spirit of the novelist Henry James, who portrayed women as collectible objects in novels such as Portrait of a Lady (1881). Paxton’s restrained palette and precise rendering of figures and setting here and elsewhere allied him to the academic tradition of his Parisian teacher, Jean-Léon Gérôme.

Might hang. Thanks.

316 Excellent painting. If the Longshoremen strike doesn't occur, a good Christmas gift to your loved ones would be a tea set with a nice assortment of loose-leaf tea tins from Fortnum & Mason (1703) the famed and long-lived luxury department store. They will ship your gift in a wicker basket as a tradition started by Queen Victoria who shipped personal gift packages to her brave soldiers in Crimea in 1856.

A good afternoon tea with proper finger sandwiches and scones (with jam and clotted cream) makes life with family and friends much more enjoyable.

Mr. Fortnum was a butler to Queen Anne who insisted that all the candles be fresh and not 1/2 burned each evening so he took the half-burned candles and sold them to the public for pretty pennies as they were candles from the Palace.
