18 That lighter section to the right of center looks like a searchlight beam. But it seems to be coming from the surface of the ocean itself. It's not the moon, as it is way over to the left.

There's also a bridge or headland on the far right.

28 "In this nocturnal scene, Winslow Homer, known for his paintings of the sea’s power in the 1890s, depicts the U.S. Navy’s North Atlantic Fleet’s hunt of the Spanish Squadron. Spanish ships had retreated into Santiago Bay on May 27, 1898, and subsequently were trapped by the U.S. naval blockade. The viewpoint from San Pedro de la Roca—still under Spanish control—encompasses a guard tower, a crenelated wall, and two cannons.

X-ray technology reveals that Homer initially included a Spanish soldier to the left of the guard tower, but he painted this figure out. U.S. ships, out- fitted with two searchlights and positioned outside of the picture plane, cast two beams into the night sky and onto the coastline, looking for Spanish ships. The focus on the navy’s innovative searchlight also demonstrates Homer’s lifelong interest in technology. On July 3, the Spanish attempted a daring escape, but the U.S. Navy sunk every vessel in the squadron."

71 Interesting choice of subject for Homer. He did several night time scenes effectively and the use of the search light instead of just moonlight is subtle in the way it illuminates small portions of the structure. But it is unusual to have so many hard straight lines in one of his paintings. There is usually more movement: water, human activity, scudding clouds, etc. He certainly portrays the hard lines and feel of the guns and stonework. I wonder what the public reaction was to the painting as it is different from his typical style and subject.

73 I'm always curious about these early paintings of night scenes. In order to get the colors right, you have to mix them in a lighted space. But the lighting of the canvas and pigments would spoil the lighting of the scene you're trying to accurately depict. Am I just making things overly complicated, or was there a lot of back-and-forth between viewing the scene and ducking away under a lighted tent?

105 Just heard on the radio, a guy called in to say he and a buddy flew his own helicopter up to NC from Florida to help folks in the Asheville area. First, he said that story of the national guard rescuing the 11 day old baby was nonsense......he and his friend Charlie saved that baby in their private copter. People are begging for rescue and, from two different independent and probable military trained chopper pilots say the same. These are not just people like me taking up chopper pilot training for a hobby (I did not). Or glory. Or being on the news heroes. These are people saving lives in the mountains of NC and TN where they are stranded as roads are gone in places. East TN National Guard was recently sent to Kuwait. Soldiers, with family in W NC, are at Ft. Bragg and can't take leave, so I read, as they are on stand by to be sent to the ME. God help me, but I believe these stories of locals, state, and from other state volunteers being held back. There is a rumor that 50 semi's with supplies, on exits to the I-40 corridor have had tires slashed. I cannot confirm squat, but there are many stories like this. Many.

Hundreds of folks in her immediate area are missing and she suspects a large portion will never be found - the stench is overwhelming. The military guys told him they could not begin rescues due to Title 10 not being signed. I don't know what Title 10 is, but I wish someone would use Joe's pen and sign it. This is personal to me. One of my best friends, formerly from FL, is in those mountains. They are alive, but older than I am. I have been in contact with their daughter. They lost part of their home and both vehicles in a landslide and were thinking, like those who've been in a hurricane in FL do, that power would be back in days. There is no way. They were totally, for 48hrs, unaware of the huge devastation to many SE states. I hope they are down now from the mountain as I don't know and don't want to pester their daughter til the weekend. They are living on a generator powering a fridge and running out of gas. Borrowed a neighbor's car to find a spot to call their daughter the other day. Gas is gone now, I am sure. Neighbors are helping neighbors with supplies shared. But it is very bad, beyond what we can comprehend. Even CNN was not able to take video of the Lake Lure area and stopped by authorities from filming. It is very strange and many compare it to the response in Maui.

The WI polling averages in 2020 and 2016 were off 6 and 7 respectively. They're showing a dead heat now. The MI Senate candidate said that her own internal polling showed Kamala down in MI, right next door.

This came from a public hearing for those that are still alive in Chimney Rock, which is near Lake Lure. I saw the X or whatever. If it is a conspiracy theory there are a lot of them. The little town of Chimney Rock is gone and, per the report, no plans to recover bodies. I do not know, but part of me believes this. Others report stench.

Emminent domain, I guess, if the reports are true.
