Guns of the Weasel So this doesn't happen every day, at least not to me. A couple of weeks ago I get an email from WW's uncle regarding a pistol he has had for years. It was a gift from his mother to his father for Christmas in 1967, and since he isn't a shooter, he wanted to give it to me. His father unfortunately passed shortly after receiving the gun and never had a really had the chance to shoot it very much. *SIGH* Oh well, I suppose I will accept the great burden and perform this humanitarian gesture for the good of the family and frankly all of mankind. The RSOs wield unspeakable power so it is in your best interest to be nice to them. If you are a novice shooter, or even have never been to the range before and think guns are icky, you are welcome to shoot! Just see an RSO and they will set you up with an experienced shooter to help you. If you miss the mandatory range safety briefing which is mandatory and must be attended, all is not lost. See an RSO to plead your case, be harangued and chastised, and then spend some punishment time on the Disciplinary Range of Shame. @That SOB, yeah, that was my first thought. The FG screaming like that turned the situation from bad to worse.
All things said, I think the guy did about as well as he could. I pondered exiting the vehicle so the GF wasn't in the line of fire, but, reluctantly concluded the time wasted would probably have made things worse. He saw the gun and didn't hesitate. He still spent time in jail, which was not unexpected. Nor did it surprise me he got a DA who wanted to press charges, even though it was an obvious case of self-denfense. Homework: this fits nicely with our CC class this weekend.
The gun is the LAST resort. Only when your life is in danger. That said, and I will admit I would be totally aggravated at the blue car drivers, at the point he cuts me off (and I have no recourse), I would have waved him on and mumbled about him under my breath. Since he didn't do that, and in fact uttered a derogatory remark about the other vehicle which escalated the situation, once the other driver exits the car and acts like he might have a weapon, I have no issue with pulling the gun. Of course, you need to factor in your passenger, who may/may not inadvertenly aggrevate the situation. It was emphasized in class that if you shoot, expect to be handcuffed, hauled into jail, etc.. Which obviously happened in this case Glad the case was eventually dismissed Posted by: Grateful at September 29, 2024 07:16 PM (IQ6Gq) 30
OK, so I got my Lee 50th Anniversary reloading kit a couple of weeks ago. Then we had an overridden Gun Thread. Then, last week, I was doing the Music Thread instead of the Gun Thread (Herbie Hancock show).
For ~$180 (incl. shipping) I got what appears to be a nice basic setup. I opened the box and looked through it without any intention of setting it up soon, and everything looks solid. It came with a magazine-style booklet called "Hodgdon Data Manual." It has rifle, pistol, and shotgun information in it. It (the Hodgdon manual) also appears each section (within caliber and barrel length) shows a case and a bullet type. I understand the bullet type, as the bullet weight and shape would affect the velocity of any powder load.
But it also shows 'COL:1.130" ' and 'PR:CCI 500, SP' and I'm not sure what those are. Anyone? And, I'm now confused on commercial cartridges. When the grain is listed on commercial cartridges, is that the bullet or powder weight? I'm fairly certain it's the bullet, but more information just fell into my brain and it needs sorting. And, yes, I'm already looking at dies for the rounds I might most need (due to price, etc.) to reload. What have I gotten myself into...? So, anyone remember Weaselsan's sage advice about wobbly shit? Because I have a range report which has just that.
I noticed the forend on the Savage had come loose, wobbly, even. I went, "hmm" tightened everything up and went on about my business. Yesterday, I hit the range for our monthly silhouette match and was on course to shoot probably a 16 our of 20 under some rough conditions, which would have been a decent score. During the switch from 200 meter to 300 meter, I went to adjust the scope and, yep, it wobbled! Say what? Yeah, the picatinny mounting rail had come loose. Yours truly hadn't been smart enough to think "hmm, loose forend, maybe look for other wobbly shit?" I got home after the match, took everything apart, put some Locktite on the screws for the mounting rail and headed back to the range to zero. I started @25 yards, because I had no idea if I was even on paper. Dead center. Hmmm. Moved the target to 200 ayrds, yep, shooting left. Got things adjusted to my satisfaction and called it a day. Homework - three observations:
1) Obviously the best course is to avoid the situation in the first place. The initial verbal exchange did not help. Traffic situations are volatile and unpredictable. This wouldn't have been an incident if traffic worked out in many other different ways. 2) The framework of "capability, opportunity and intent" applies in a deadly force situation. So little time to make that assessment. Complicated here by a passenger and two threats in the other car. The presence of a passenger made me think about whether decision-making is unconsciously influenced by an instinct to protect others as opposed to yourself. Would your assessment of the threat be different? 3) The media headline said it was road rage and the initial law enforcement reaction was racial. Reminder you have no control over the narrative that gets created. Also a general reminder to read headlines with skepticism for the same reason. No range time this weekend. I went to the Chantilly gun show on Friday and Saturday. There was a larger than normal crowd on Friday, and the venue was pretty packed Saturday afternoon. Cheaper guns were selling, but the more expensive guns (> $1k) mostly weren't. I think people were doing a lot of comparison shopping before making a decision to buy. Ammo was abundant and mostly decently priced. I didn't see any panic buying.

Posted by: GWB at September 29, 2024 07:26 PM COL = Cartridge Overall Length (in this case, 1.130 inches) PR = Primer used, in this case a CCI 500, which is a primer, that among other things, is 'soft', meaning it is useful for weapons that have relatively light primer strikes. OK, a more generic question for reloading:
How many rounds (a round number WAG is fine) do you get out of a pound of powder? Pistol, rifle? Because I looked at 1lb jugs of powder... and I wondered "How the H*** is this cheaper than buying commercial?!" I said other dirty words, too - similar to the ones I frequently say now in the grocery store. Somewhere online said ~40 to 60, which put the powder at more than a dollar a round, and that seemed astounding. I was looking at the single pounds for when I start, checking to see if it's what I want to work with, what the value might end up being, etc. Rather than invest in a 10lb jug of something and finding out a 1/2lb in that it's not really what I want. How do I know which primers to order?
Rifle and pistol use different ones. For each, there are two diameters: large and small. Compare a 9mm case and a .45 case* and it should be visually apparent. Then there are also magnum versions for large capacity cases. Your load data might have a notation like SP or LRM for Small Pistol or Large Rifle Magnum. LP, SR, etc mean what you think they do. Surprisingly, gun shots inside a car tend to get muffled a bit, I think, due to all of the soft surfaces inside a car. (I've shot IDPA stages from inside a car and was surprised how quiet it was, relatively speaking)

How many rounds (a round number WAG is fine) do you get out of a pound of powder? Pistol, rifle?
One pound = 7000 grains. Supposedly derived from the approximate weight of a grain of wheat. So divide 7000 by your charge weight. Posted by: Oddbob --------- Even within the same caliber, say 9mm,, there is a huge variation in charge weights depending on powder you use and bullet type/weight. So, very important too keep charges in range of published values. Anyway... about a thousand pistol rounds per pound of powder, depending on several variables. 37 It (the Hodgdon manual) also appears each section (within caliber and barrel length) shows a case and a bullet type.
Posted by: GWB at September 29, 2024 07:26 PM (DDSgs) "COL:1.130" mean Cartridge Overall Length is 1.130 inches. This is measured from the base of the cartridge case to the tip of the seated bullet with your calipers. 'PR:CCI 500, SP' means the primer used for testing the load in the data was a CCI #500 Small Pistol primer. You can safely interchange a different brand primer, as long as you are a few tenths of a grain below the max listed powder charge. On commercial loads, the listed grain weight is the bullet. 40 I just figured out the "PR" information - that's the primer.
Which tells me one answer to another question I had: How do I know which primers to order? There we go. Posted by: GWB at September 29, 2024 07:27 PM (DDSgs) Buy rifle primers for loading rifle, pistol primers for loading pistol. Primers come in two sizes, "large" and "small", you will need the correct size for the cases you're loading. There are also "Standard" and "Magnum" primers, you can probably ignore that and start with Standard. Others may have a different opinion, but I buy whatever brand is cheapest. Precision rifle shooters will probably have a favorite brand, but I'm not operating at that level. Posted by: BillyD at September 29, 2024 08:03 PM (Yt3ED) 109

50 OK, a more generic question for reloading:
Posted by: GWB at September 29, 2024 07:34 PM (DDSgs) There are 7,000 grains to a pound, so divide 7000 by the charge weight you're using to get the number of reloads to a pound. And, yes, I wouldn't buy anything larger that one pound cans until you get deeper into reloading and are sure what powder you like. Posted by: BillyD at September 29, 2024 08:07 PM (Yt3ED) 115

But it also shows 'COL:1.130" ' and 'PR:CCI 500, SP' and I'm not sure what those are. Anyone? ====== COL is the cartridge overall length with the specified bullet. 9mm, for example, has a SAAMI maximum COL of 1.16" but depending on the exact bullet used, your COL for a particular load and bullet can be far shorter than that. For example, a Hornady XTP bullet is a truncated cone design and usually comes in well short of the 1.16 COL for 9mm. The PR is CCI Primer 500 (small pistol). Primers are NOT exactly interchangeable so you cannot plug in a Remington Small Pistol (1 1/2) Here is a handy primer reference chart from Long Range Hunters as a pdf download. https://tinyurl.com/ysr5v8ej Another useful download is Grafs and Sons (a reloading supply company) with the SAAMI cartridge and the appropriate primer for that cartridge. https://tinyurl.com/ymzhbhtn Posted by: whig at September 29, 2024 08:16 PM (SI97o) 127

The Maximum OAL is typically an industry specification based on magazine length; a cartridge longer than that may not fit into the magazine. When reloading, load to the length specified in the loading data, which should always be shorter than the COAL, and is correct for the bullet and powder charge used. So the bottom line is the old girlfriend set everything in motion. Just kidding sort of.
I also assume he left out the part where the other two guys were convicted felons and shouldn’t have been in possession of a firearm. I also think he probably downed played his own wreckless driving a bit being a 20 year old guy in a sports car. That said , I have to admit I wouldn’t have acted so preemptively as he did for a couple of reasons . The girlfriend and shooting toward traffic / ‘bystanders’. He was also prepared to immediately shoot an unarmed guy. I think what he did was self defense after he saw the gun but a little too eager for me. Posted by: Oddbob at September 29, 2024 07:40 PM (/y8xj) So, that internet source was off by two orders of magnitude, for pistol rounds. (Give or take, I just checked a 38 special load.) Whew. My heart is beating easier now, since a single pound was looking like $50-$85 dollars - before shipping and hazmat. Posted by: GWB ===== The all time winner for cheap pistol target loads in older handgun cartridges is Alliant's Bullseye which is a very very fast powder that requires very little for target 38 Special or 45 ACP loads. YOU MUST PAY ATTENTION when loading Bullseye as a double charge is easy to do, harder to detect, and can very quickly damage the firearm and the human firing it. That being said, Winchester 231/HP38 Hodgdons (same powder nowadays) is a bit more versatile, less risk of overcharging due to being a bulkier powder, etc. You can even load mild 357 magnum loads with it. Unique (and Hodgdon's clone Universal) are both shotgun powders and excellent pistol powders. And also recommended. There are some more modern powders like Titegroup, Silhouette, but they have some caveats in using them. Posted by: whig at September 29, 2024 08:27 PM (SI97o) 155
I would not be the first to show a weapon.
I would be the first to run over the pedestrian or trap them in between cars if I was being threatened. The girlfriend should have been of the phone with 911 after the second aggressive cutoff. And then constantly during the encounter. Only reason I'm the first to draw is if you're breaking into my home. Then all bets are off. I have a Marine. I do think the young man may have been a little less innocent than he describes. Were both drivers being dicks? Probably. Should shots have been fired? Absolutely not. @nurse, only one person got out of the vehicle to escalate the situation. And the person who got out was the person driving the car which boxed in the other driver.
Everyone stays in their car and drives away, this doesn't happen. Alliant powders don't seem to be available much these days, so probably not a great option for a new reloader. Win231/HP38 is also a good choice for a lot of handgun cartridges. I burned a few pounds of it when Bullseye was unavailable during the Great Obama Reloading Component Drought. Unique was always dirty for me, everyone else seems to like it. So here's a story of a road rage confrontation I had at the beach this summer. I'm behind a pickup on a beach frontage residential road going about 3 miles an hour. Dude in front acts like he's pulling over in front of a house under construction on the right, and starts motioning out the drivers window for me to go around. So I start to creep around and the guy goes bananas saying I'm going to kill a pedestrian because I'm in such a hurry. I roll down the window of my car and calmly tell the guy I thought he was motioning for me to pass and he goes double bananas. I think about shooting him in the face, decide not to, and we both drive away.

One thing on my planned (eventually) reloading activities: my first reloading will likely be rifle rounds (unless I find I can afford that .32 Tomcat with the tip-up barrel). I have one semi-exotic round (.50 Beowulf) that I will commit to, and given the pressure limitations on M1 Garand rounds, I will likely reload those, too. (Most of the sellers do not list whether their 30-06 rounds meet the pressure limit, though some do. Would think it's better to do it myself, in the long run.)
And, then, of course, there's the bigger ammo when I finally acquire an 8.6 or 6.5. If I drop some money on another "exotic" caliber, I'll want to reload that. Posted by: GWB at September 29, 2024 08:49 PM (DDSgs) 204

Posted by: BillyD ------ Alliant announced that due to existing ammo contracts, it would not be selling powder to reloaders for the foreseeable future. Alliant pretty much relies on a domestic powder mill for its powders and imported only a few particular lines. So, Bullseye, Power Pistol, Unique, etc. are going to be disappearing from the shelves for a long while. Simply another reason that we should push for peace in Ukraine. Unique was reformulated a few years ago that makes it less dirty that it was. Titegroup, itself, can be a dirty powder with light loads as you get incomplete powder burn. 203 One thing on my planned (eventually) reloading activities: my first reloading will likely be rifle rounds.
Posted by: GWB I personally would reverse that order. Reloading handgun cartridges successfully gives practice and confidence for reloading rifle cartridges which are a bit more finicky with some additional details that pertain to bottleneck cartridges. Reloading for autoreloaders like the Garand have a few more caveats as you have to balance accuracy with reliability and safety . Lever actions have some restrictions on types of bullets if they have a tube magazine, and so on. Pretty much all reloaders have or will get a 38 Special revolver simply because reloading it (or a 45 ACP for that matter) is a piece of cake compared to more finicky cartridges. 45 ACP is not that much more difficult. 9mm and 40 S&W are a step above in difficulty due to pressure, the taper in the 9mm case, and bullet setback which can spike pressures in a hurry. 187 And FWIW I also like Bullseye. I tried Titegroup when I couldn't get BE and it worked fine but for me, it seemed a little tetchier. That is, the difference between [ redacted ] and [ redacted ] + .2 was bigger than for BE.
Posted by: Oddbob Titegroup IS a bit tetchier. It has generated unexpected pressure spikes under certain circumstances in some higher pressure handgun cartridges. Part of it is that Titegroup is position insensitive but it also burns hot. Can't remember whether it is double based or not but it does burn hotter than something like W231. To avoid it shooting dirty, you need mid pressure loads at a minimum. It does, however, actually do a nice mid range load for the 357 Magnum. Not hunting velocity with big bullets like H110 or 2400, but a good 1300-1400 fps self defense practice load with 125 gr hollowpoints. Posted by: whig at September 29, 2024 09:04 PM (SI97o) 240

(For those of you who have been there when I fired that, you'll know what I mean.) As to the Garand ammo - yes, I found some in those particular brands. I bought the American Eagle because it specifically said "Yep, this is what you want in your M-1." And all of them were gone again within a week after ordering that. Oh GWB and Van Owens,
Invest in a cheap electronic scale with a check weight included. The Lee Powder Scale aka Safety Scale operates differently than the balance beam scales in chem labs everywhere (Ohaus and its copies). Richard Lee purposefully designed it because if you get sloppy with the regular balance beam scales, it is possible to transpose which number is on which sliding scale. Lee makes it very difficult to do that with his scale but at the cost of making it operate in a weird matter. Good news is that it is very sensitive and can take a greater banging around (not recommended) than some of those tri measure Ohaus type scales. But it is slow and an electronic scale is a cheap way to crosscheck on occasion whatever load you are measuring. Get the reloading specific cheapo electronic scales from Frankford Arsenal or Hornady, etc. as they will have avoirdupois (grains, etc. ) measurement built in. Hey Some Rat - I do a little (way too little) cowboy shooting. You can buy Cowboy loads from several manufacturers or load your own. 1000 psi seems very low for a pressure - was it supposed to be 1000 feet per second (fps)? Most of the commercial cowboy loads are 255 gr lead at around 850 feet per second from a replica of a Colt single action or modern replica with a 6” barrel, and most of the folks loading their own go a bit lower yet. That’ll probably be about 1000 fps out of the rifle. Much faster and it’ll get a lot of lead fouling. Hornady and Black Hills both make nice commercial loads.
Congrats on your rifle! That’s a great story. Posted by: Coelacanth at September 29, 2024 09:18 PM (hNXse) 264

Will the range of eye relief tolerance typically be smaller for the 20X than the 12X above? IOW say the 12X above has an eye relief range from 2.8 to 3.2 inches (0.4 inches). Will the 20X have a tolerance of eye relief less than less than 0.4 inches? As Weasel has seen from my shooting at MoMe's I have a lot of trouble getting the proper eye relief on my 5.5 to 22.5X scope in-action, even though I believe I set it up well before going to the range. I'm either a dunce at setting-up the eye relief to begin with or need to mucho practice getting my head position constant on the rifle. Posted by: Gref at September 29, 2024 09:29 PM (aBgBM) 288

And then you look at big box versions and they look like maybe they are steel cabinets with some hardibacker inside.
Yeah, pretty much. I bought a cheap "Winchester" branded gun safe from Tractor Supply. It's not nearly as robust as the "Winchester" branded safe I bought from Sam's Club 15 years ago which was made by Ft. Worth Safes. The electronic lock failed in less than 6 months and I replaced it with a Sargent & Greenleaf. But the main point is that it was cheap. If I had to have a Liberty or Fort Knox one, I still wouldn't have it. Posted by: Oddbob at September 29, 2024 09:31 PM (/y8xj) 291

As your magnification increases your eye box gets smaller. If you're shooting a 35 power scope you have to be in exactly the right place, where with a 10 power scope it's easier to find your perfect spot behind the scope. But your eye relief stays close to the same.

A quick note about badges. I'm running out of time to make badges before the big day. It only takes 10-15 minutes to create your personal badge, but it takes the printer more than an hour to print, and it's only that fast because I'm doing 7 or 8 at a time. Posted by: nurse ratched at September 29, 2024 09:54 PM (UNPQr) Dedicate a closet to the gun safe? Most closets are wider than the door to enter them. Buy a safe that barely fits through the door. Drill holes through the side walls of the safe, and run lag screws through those holes into heavy timbers placed there to receive them. 2X6, 4X4, whatever fits. With the safe closed and locked, it would be very tedious for the burglar to remove those timbers. And the timbers would make the safe into an object too bulky to be twisted around, and brought out the door edgewise. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at September 29, 2024 10:01 PM (yLiuJ) 358

Posted by: nurse ratched at September 29, 2024 09:54 PM (UNPQr) I would suggest the SnapSafe (someone correct me on the branding?) series of MODULAR safes. They come flat-pak, like an Ikea safe. You assemble the six separate sides, make up the box, install the interior and door, and voila... SAFE!!! Why'd I mention this series? So, you might want to assemble it at the back of your closet, and make sure it's too big to "fit" out of the closet door. Also, get with your landlord, and see if you can negotiate some "damage" for mounting a safe. He or she might not mind patching a mere four, 1/2" holes, if discretely sited.
