Top Story

In the ongoing legal dispute between Apple and Epic Games over Apple's theft of 30% of everything, Apple was ordered to produce a million documents relating to changes to the App Store.

Apple asked for an extension to that deadline, following its habit of dragging out unfavourable cases forever. (Tech Crunch)

The judge was not having it.
As Epic constantly points out, this document production is all downside for Apple because it relates to Apple's alleged lack of compliance with the Court's injunction. It is not in Apple's interest to do any of this quickly. This is a classic moral hazard, and the way Apple announced out of the blue four days before the substantial completion deadline that it would not make that deadline because of a document count that it had surely been aware of for weeks hardly creates the impression that Apple is behaving responsibly.

Apple's request for an extension of time is DENIED. The deadline for the substantial completion of document production is Monday, September 30. It's up to Apple to figure out how to meet that deadline, but Monday is indeed the deadline.
Good to see. I have no particular love for Epic Games, but Apple acts like a classic monopolist, constantly skirting the edge of open illegality.

This doesn't affect desktop users at all, or people running their own server hardware. Only cloud users and operators with Nvidia cards.
The CWWK X86-P5 is a mini-PC with up to an 8 core N305 CPU, 32GB of RAM, and four M.2 SSDs. (Liliputing)

The N305 (and the other option, the four core N100) don't have a lot of PCIe lanes so those four SSDs all run at PCIe 3.0 x1 - a maximum speed of 1GB per second each.

But this is designed to run as a simple NAS, and the two 2.5Gb Ethernet ports combine to about 0.5GB per second, so that bandwidth is unlikely to be the limiting factor.

Apart from that there are two HDMI ports and two USB ports. A pretty spartan selection but just fine for a mini-NAS.

They previously used Cassandra, which is written in Java, and which I have used myself. ScyllaDB is compatible but written in C++, and they have found it to be far more robust on this scale than Cassandra.

They've also cut the number of database servers needed in half, now having 72 servers each with 9TB of storage. Which is a lot of servers, but not a lot of disk; you could easily fit that much storage in a single 2U rackmount system. And it would only cost about $100k - a lot for you or me, but nothing for even a modestly successful company.

So if you are stuck with a Cassandra database and it is causing you pain, ScyllaDB might be the way out.

Disclaimer: No, there is no CharybdisDB. I checked.

There may be no CharybdisDB, but you have to give the company's founders points for using "Scylla" at all. The current simple English phrase for a difficult dilemma is "between a rock and a hard place," but once it was "between Scylla and Charybdis" for people with something above a fourth-grade education. (Though I think I remember reading some Greek mythology on my own at that age. . . .)

The next hurricane, Rita, threatened the area, and the college bookstore prepared by putting up plywood sheets *inside* the large plate glass windows at the front of the store. The "news" people made fun: "Look how silly the people in Texas are, putting boards inside the glass!"

I spoke to the manager of the store. She said, "We couldn't fasten plywood to the outside of the windows because the frames are metal and too narrow. Better and cheaper to put the wood inside and have to replace glass, than to do without and maybe have all the books and furniture ruined by wind and rain."

Things are fine here. We were supposed to get the worst of it but just had a lot of rain. The folks east of here got battered, and up the coast like in NC got it really bad. I think Mike Hammer is in the Ashville area and don't know how he made out.

I spent yesterday cleaning up the yard and you couldn't tell there had been a storm at all, so I feel pretty lucky.

I'm going to miss seeing yall this year. Next year though, and I am going to try to get Mrs fd to come with me.

In the novel, his boss was an albino, I think. His name was "Yurasis Dragon." (Say it aloud and you'll get the joke.) Trevanian was sending up the entire spy thriller genre, but he did it so subtly that the story comes off as a good thriller in its own right.

Yes! Richard Boone as Paladin in Have Gun must have been one of the ugliest leading men in TV history. But he sold that role too. Later he played memorable villains in Hombre, and as the leader of a gang of kidnapper thugs in the John Wayne film set in 1901; can't recall the name.

Oh, he lost his temper now and then. There are lots of moments when he shouts in anger or exasperation at someone -- "What fools these mortals be!"

HGWT's best episodes were not those written by Gene Roddenberry; those are good at best. Harry Julian Fink, now, if you saw his name on the credits you were in for a solid story with a memorable character at its center. He would later create "Dirty Harry" with his wife; and he wrote the Wayne Western I mentioned above, with Wayne's son being kidnapped by Boone's character.

And HGWT had good genes. It had been created by Sam Rolfe, who would later "develop" (i.e., build from scratch) The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

190 @187/Fen: Assuming the ISP keeps track of which IP address is assigned to which specific device the ISP gives you to connect to their network, and that ID is mapped to a customer account, and the hacker also has the customer database with phone numbers and addresses, then yes.

Further to this though: If you've been approached by someone claiming to have gotten this information and demanding money from you in any way, ignore it (except to report it to law enforcement.) Either it's a scammer trying to scare you into thinking they have something on you (and they don't) or it's someone who actually hacked an ISP and got the info they say they have.

Either way, paying these bastards any money only encourages them to do more of that. Don't. Report the mail to law enforcement and let them deal with them, and then ignore/block any further contact from the scammer or criminal.

Change your passwords in conjunction with that ISP as well. Maybe call their customer support and ask for a keyword to be added to your account that you must say to them before any changes can be ordered.
