In those days the athletes performed naked and to prevent unwanted arousal while competing, the men imbibed freely on a drink containing saltpeter. At the opening ceremonial parade of this first great event, Gedophamee observed the first wave of naked athletic males marching toward her and she exclaimed: "Oh! Limp pricks!". Over the next two and a half millennium that expression morphed into the word:"Olympics." (H/T AZ deplorable moron) Drinking alcohol is linked to six types of cancer, experts say: ‘It’s toxic’ It’s long been known that no amount of alcohol is good for the body — and now new research spotlights the potential harm it can cause. More than 5% of all cancer cases are caused by drinking alcohol, according to the Cancer Progress Report 2024 from the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR). Among the modifiable risk factors for cancer, alcohol is the third biggest, behind obesity (7.6% of cases) and cigarette smoking (19.3%). “Excessive levels of alcohol consumption increase the risk for six different types of cancer, including certain types of head and neck cancer, esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, and breast, colorectal, liver and stomach cancers,” said Rajarshi Sengupta, PhD, lead author of the AACR Cancer Progress Report 2024, in a statement sent to Fox News Digital. Neither agent had authority to remove luggage, and Alleyne was not assigned to use the baggage vehicle at the time, authorities said. Not only will she not get to see Disney Land. I watched the pilot episode and saw the most amazingly dirty sight gag they managed to slip past the censors. Set up was a few short skits of a man getting into an elevator and having minor mishaps as the two door halves slide closed horizontally. Final skit was the man enters the elevator, then two Japanese geishas scurry in to join him. Then the doors slide closed vertically. The old sailors will get it. He pushed every button he could, and the door opened on the second floor, with the handle of the leash still trapped. He ran downstairs, expecting the worst, and thinking about what to say to his girlfriend. As the dog was being raised up the door by his collar, a grad student unhooked the collar just in time. The professor was relieved, and class was dismissed early. Posted by: NaCly Dog at September 28, 2024 10:22 PM (u82oZ) 104

154 Only people with native heritage should be allowed to chew Red Man.
Indeed. Two years ago, the new owners, Swedish Match, changed the name of the product to America's Best Chew, because they anticipated native heritage issues. Pinkerton Tobacco sponsored an early pro basketball team, the Toledo Red Man Tobaccos. They billed it that way to avoid confusion with the Improved Order of Red Men. Should Commiela "win", if they think J-6 was an insurrection, they ain't seen nothin' yet.
There are three possible outcomes: Kamala wins, or it's close enough to not require a lot of cheating. End of the American Republic. Kamala "wins", but it requires a massive amount of cheating. Chaos ensues. Trump wins by such a decisive margin that no amount of remotely plausible cheating can overcome it (the most likely outcome). Then the Deep State has to decide whether to launch an explicit coup to keep Trump from power, knowing that they won't control large sections of the country. He inherited his folks' house near Saluda, NC, and word from a neighbor is that the wind knocked trees over into a pond, which then overflowed its banks and caused some flooding in the walk-out basement of the house. He is safe and sound in Arizona. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at September 28, 2024 11:47 PM (YlAE5) 363
Liz Cheney has never spent any real time in Wyoming.
She only moved to Wyoming because there was an open Senate seat, didn't get that, but did grab the House seat, and moved back to Northern Virginia the moment she lost the House seat. Posted by: The ARC of History! at September 28, 2024 11:47 PM (uxCna) 364

Ok, I get it. The Beatles are very hyped and very played. 50 years after they broke up, you hear them all the time without even trying. People get sick of them. Still, name me another band that changed sounds so fast and so well. Most bands can do maybe two things well. Beatles could do Honey Pie, Helter Skelter, and Glass Onion ON THE SAME ALBUM. And toss in While My Guitar Gently Sleeps. They went from Hard Day's Night to Sgt Pepper in 3 years. There never was, and never will be, another band like that. There are no other bands that could do really good stuff in that many styles. In any discussion of rock, you have to say The Beatles, and then everybody else.

Yudhishthira's Dice,
I'll add this about The Beatles. On 'Let It Be', I don't much care for McCartney's ballads -- at all. But Lennon's old timey bluesy rock numbers are fantastic. They never got much airplay because . . . ballads. 'I've Got A Feeling', 'One After 909', even 'Get Back' with Billy Preston (though of course that did get airplay). Not bad songs at all. But I don't rate this album above the other two I already mentioned. Posted by: RickZ at September 29, 2024 01:39 AM (gKDq2) 451

------ Rush. Muse, and I don't even like them. Pantera shifted through various types of hard rock from one album to the next, before defining thrash metal. There are a lot of very versatile bands in the business. The Beatles were hacks, who shifted around with the wind of pop music in the 60s, doing a lot of things not very well. They were pretty and nonthreatening. Girls liked them, and dads didn't object to them. That's it. That's all they ever were. Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at September 29, 2024 01:43 AM (awTae) 452

Posted by: gourmand du jour at September 29, 2024 01:37 AM (MeG8a) American Jazz had a renewal with the era of Spiro Gyra, The Rippingtons, and the like. Much of it, very good music. JAZZ though, as a genre, was a dead end. Popular music, did, does, and always shall, depend on a catchy, memorable lyric wrapped within a capturing tune, be it mournful, soulful, joyful, silly or happy. Jazz, lacks the Pop lyric, much less the deeper digs of rock of every era. Jazz is the IPA of music. IPA nerds nerd out over it, and everyone else can't wait NOT to buy it. Nope. That's like saying "La Grange" and "Legs" were wildly different styles because of a little production difference. Rush, Pantera, etc just did variations on one genre. Beatles could do anything well. Pick a genre, and you can find someone who did one particular genre at times better than The Beatles did in that genre, but that's the only genre they were good at. The Beatles, and then the battle is for second and your mileage will vary depending on your personal genre taste.

I guess if there is still a Lynnerd Skinnerd without.... well... I suppose it's possible.

Well, I've never purchased any Beatles recordings, so there's that. Always something better to buy. LOL.

Suffice to say. Love them or Hate them.
The Beatles held and do hold the patent on, such a massive change on the Musical Map in the USA. Mostly '60s, but some '70s, too. They just DO, and to deny so is to deny reality. Others, WERE better. Often, MUCH better. But for better or for worse, The Beatles left the footprints OF RECORD, even though others might have trod there before. Lasting Impressions are WHAT MAKES the historical records, after all. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston,TX Posted by: Jim at September 29, 2024 03:10 AM (kQgoX) 513
So... If I write a piece of shit like Here Comes The Sun, and then perform that piece of shit myself, is it better than when Whitfield & Strong write Papa Was A Rolling Stone and Undisputed Truth or the Temptations perform it?
Because from where I'm standing, Here Comes The Sun is a crap song, and Papa Was A Rolling Stone is a masterpiece. Sorry the Beatles suck, guys. But they suck. Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at September 29, 2024 03:11 AM (awTae) 514
How about a Polish instrumental rock/metal band?
https://youtu.be/86VNMGkEIWk 2 million views. But 2 million youtube views means nothing. Taylor Swift songs get 3.5 billion, and youtube means nothing to her. Posted by: mikeski at September 29, 2024 03:19 AM (DgGvY) 515

Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at September 29, 2024 03:11 AM (awTae) Argue THAT with the history of the musical charts. And I'll concede that Papa was a Rolling Stone was genius. THAT SAID. First time I ever heard "Here Comes the Sun". 6th grade camp. The councilors played it from zero volume to ten, as the 0600 wake up song on the PA. Just as the actual sun was breaking the horizon. Pure Fuckin' MAGIC. Criticize the tune all you want. You'll never, ever, dent that MAGIC. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at September 29, 2024 03:21 AM (kQgoX) 516

YD, "Pop" music sucks, period.
youtu.be/gPoiv0sZ4s4 Posted by: JQ at September Oh, I haven't forgotten that one, lol. But I don't hate pop. It's fun. But it should never be considered good. It's like little league baseball. It's fun, we all love it, but it's for the kiddies. Like the Beatles. Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at September 29, 2024 03:33 AM (awTae) 521
It's the musical version of candy. It has its place, but not as part of a balanced diet. Whenever you sit there with a full belly and say "I could really go for something more. Something terrible," and reach for that slice of green jello disguised as key lime pie - that's a Beatles song.

Here Comes the Sun is a George song, and has his lively guitar work and his joyful heart.

Posted by: JQ It's the McDonalds argument. Does popularity mean quality? The Beatles were insanely popular. They were not technically great. They were good enough. Lennon on Ringo: "He is not technically good, but I think Ringo's drumming is underrated the same way Paul's bass playing is underrated." Technically-great musicians who become popular are rare. The Progressive Rock movement of the 70s, mostly. Neal Peart and Bill Bruford and Phil Collins could all out-drum Ringo one-handed. But Rush and Genesis and Yes and King Crimson (among the other seven thousand bands Bruford played for) were never going to be Beatles-popular. I'd add heavy metal when it's popularity has waxed rather than waned, too. But again, the most technically-proficient bands were not the most popular, even among metal bands. Many of my earliest jobs, were at places what had a jukebox or played the Top Hits radio stations. Ugh.
It left a mark & ruined my enjoyment of many tunes. Even a favorite song can become an annoying earworm after hundreds of repetitions. Coon hunting was big in the area I grew up in, the dog (s) were important as they chased the racoon' s up a tree and the guy with rifles did the rest.
Coon meat was sold to restaurants in Harlem, NY, where the meat was in demand. Went along with my dad when I was about 8 or so, on a cold night in the forest, no fun for me. Ben had a dog name Poochie, who could smell a racoon a mile away, great dog. Posted by: Colin Campbell at September 29, 2024 04:16 AM (e8qy3) Processing 0.09, elapsed 0.0975 seconds. |
