FINALLY made contact today with a longtime gal pal who lives/lived in Ashville. She's been a prepper forever (no vaxes for my kids, thank you!) and bugged out of her place along the river before the storm. She has a cabin up in the mts. and is safe there with two of her kids and four grands. Her house and shop were washed away but she's a happy warrior. No worries about food, shelter or water. It's a miracle.

Amazon video has "Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In" available. I watched the pilot episode and saw the most amazingly dirty sight gag they managed to slip past the censors.
Set up was a few short skits of a man getting into an elevator and having minor mishaps as the two door halves slide closed horizontally.
Final skit was the man enters the elevator, then two Japanese geishas scurry in to join him. Then the doors slide closed vertically.

True Story time:
A chemist professor at the University I was at took his girlfriend's dog to work with him. His lab was on the third floor. He got on the elevator, and as the doors closed the dog ran out. The leash handle caught in the door and the elevator started up. He pushed every button he could, and the door opened on the second floor, with the handle of the leash still trapped.
He ran downstairs, expecting the worst, and thinking about what to say to his girlfriend.
As the dog was being raised up the door by his collar, a grad student unhooked the collar just in time.
The professor was relieved, and class was dismissed early.

My 80-something parents lived thru the Florida hurricane season of 2004. One hurricane came ashore in Stuart - about 50 miles south of them - knocking out their power for two weeks. Power was back on for a day or two when another hurricane came ashore in almost the exact same location, knocking their power out for another two weeks. Fortunately we were able to keep in touch via land line. I remember them laughing that the highlight of their day was opening their NG provided MREs to see what the dessert was...

Well, that's disappointing. I was at Primanti Bros earlier this week (Grove City location). I like their sandwiches. No idea about their pizza. So many really good Italian places in the West PA region, why would anybody order pizza from a large franchise. If this is some stupid virtue signal, it's going to play havoc on their profit margins. I grew up in Cody. I love Wyoming. Not sure I want to move back to Cody, but there are so many awesome little towns. My no-go towns: Casper, Rock Springs, Rawlins. And Cheyenne, mostly because it's too close to Denver.
I love Newcastle, but we would have to plan our vacation every year in August to get the fuck out of there during the fucking Sturgis bullshit.
Seriously, stay away from NE Wyoming in August. I am not kidding.

I have yet to hear from Mike Hammer, who is near Asheville. I did get a call from Osprey, who lurks here. He inherited his folks' house near Saluda, NC, and word from a neighbor is that the wind knocked trees over into a pond, which then overflowed its banks and caused some flooding in the walk-out basement of the house. He is safe and sound in Arizona.

Rims were rusty, so I wound up cleaning all three with a mesh abrasive wheel on a quarter inch drill. Then I went through a stack of nine old tires left here by a friend who borrowed my tire machine. I figured five had potential as "rollers" (i.e. not really roadworthy, but will keep a parts car off the ground), and four were trash. Took the trash ones to the dump.

Fifty years ago next Monday, MiladyJo took a train from her native Chicago down to Oklahoma to visit me. She forgot to leave, and with only one brief interruption, we've been together ever since. So Oct 1 is our shacking-up anniversary, but we didn't officially marry for several years. On our list of things we kinda wish we'd been wiser about back when. Don't shack up, kids; it makes for confusing anniversary dates. And statistically, your post-shackup marriage is less likely to last. We were "lucky" to beat the stats.

I'll add this about The Beatles. On 'Let It Be', I don't much care for McCartney's ballads -- at all. But Lennon's old timey bluesy rock numbers are fantastic. They never got much airplay because . . . ballads. 'I've Got A Feeling', 'One After 909', even 'Get Back' with Billy Preston (though of course that did get airplay). Not bad songs at all. But I don't rate this album above the other two I already mentioned.

Rush. Muse, and I don't even like them. Pantera shifted through various types of hard rock from one album to the next, before defining thrash metal. There are a lot of very versatile bands in the business.
The Beatles were hacks, who shifted around with the wind of pop music in the 60s, doing a lot of things not very well.
They were pretty and nonthreatening. Girls liked them, and dads didn't object to them. That's it. That's all they ever were.

American Jazz had a renewal with the era of Spiro Gyra, The Rippingtons, and the like. Much of it, very good music.
JAZZ though, as a genre, was a dead end. Popular music, did, does, and always shall, depend on a catchy, memorable lyric wrapped within a capturing tune, be it mournful, soulful, joyful, silly or happy.
Jazz, lacks the Pop lyric, much less the deeper digs of rock of every era.
Jazz is the IPA of music. IPA nerds nerd out over it, and everyone else can't wait NOT to buy it.

"Songbird" was never a Billboard #1, though it was #3 Adult Contemporary, and #4 on the Hot 100.
"Watermelon Man" was 1962.
The Miami Vice theme was #1 (Billboard Hot 100) in 1985.
Wikipedia mentions another Hot 100 #1 instrumental, "Harlem Shake" in 2013, but that has sampled lyrics from another song, so I call foul.

The Beatles were insanely popular. They were not technically great. They were good enough. Lennon on Ringo: "He is not technically good, but I think Ringo's drumming is underrated the same way Paul's bass playing is underrated."
Technically-great musicians who become popular are rare. The Progressive Rock movement of the 70s, mostly. Neal Peart and Bill Bruford and Phil Collins could all out-drum Ringo one-handed. But Rush and Genesis and Yes and King Crimson (among the other seven thousand bands Bruford played for) were never going to be Beatles-popular.
I'd add heavy metal when it's popularity has waxed rather than waned, too. But again, the most technically-proficient bands were not the most popular, even among metal bands.
