Going to McConnells Mill State Park today. Haven't been there in decades. I'm sure my fat, out of shape, middle aged, physique will be fine on those steep, narrow, rocky, paths. No problem at all. Before that, I'm going to a gun show. A friend of mine is working it. Probably won't buy anything. I live in NoVA and buying a gun in PA, having them ship it to a NoVA gun shop to pick it up seems tedious, but I can look! My sister is in the market for a boom stick (AR-15). This time it she is from my wife's family. The bride to be was in our care when she took her first steps. Anyway, today I have to return that T-shirt the running shoe store sold me with me thinking it was complimentary. Also the Adidas lunch bag I bought on Amazon, only to find it was (a) too small, and (b) sounded like it was full of loose paper behind the insulated lining. It sounded and felt cheap. Amazon offers an arrangement where you print out a QR code and take the object in its packaging to any Whole Foods. The plastic shipping bag isn't intact, but I had to cut it open to get to the item. With luck there will be no trouble.
Then we might visit that Italian bakery again for some gelato and coffee. All of these are within a few minutes' drive of each other. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at September 28, 2024 06:35 AM (omVj0) 109

99, I guess we got at crossed wires. No insult to you Puddlegum. I was just starting off. I was born in Texas but moved to NOVA many decades ago, like for of them. Even back then no one considered NOVA real Virginia, but little did they know.
The pupuseria thing was about Eastern NC, a culture II used to know. Maybe I am a jerk maybe I am a relic, but I think Eastern North Carolina and the Shenandoah valley of Virginia have a particular culture that a lot of people found appealing. I don’t want those cultures to disappear for no good reason. This point the northern Virginia I knew in the 1980s and on is gone. There’s no debate to be had because I know for a fact, the culture I grew up with there does not exist. Now I see people from failed areas of the north moving into rural areas in Virginia, North Carolina, etc. and I wonder to myself, Why can’t they live where they grew up? Why can’t they live where their culture is from? Maybe I am in the wrong. You ask anyone from France or Italy or Greece if someone immigrates there they should take on the culture of that place. I get it. No problems. Just you know, Western PA has/had it's own distinct little culture that is being swallowed up. At some point, I will flee Babylon DC. Not sure where I'll wind up but I do want to get out of that town. I'm currently visiting family in Western PA. It's nice, quiet, rural. Its surrounded by Amish farms. I would hate to see that go. A lot of it has. Very blue Pittsburgh and Allegheny County has pushed lots of people out to the surrounding counties. That causes some unwelcome changes. The Harrisburg bunch hates this part of the state. Posted by: Puddleglum, cheer up for the worst is yet to come at September 28, 2024 06:43 AM (/Djer) 121

The classic Nawlins "culture" of distinct neighborhoods and "Where'd ya go to school, dawlin?" and the "Yat" dialect has pretty much faded. Ever since Katrina we've had people moving here who want to gentrify everything, and I wouldn't mind except it makes everything more expensive. The remnants of the old culture peek out in Mardi Gras this and gumbo that, but that just feels like tourist trap stuff. "An economy based on T-shirts" said the recovery czar guy the city hired for a brief time in 2006, and the storm of fury that brought up was amazing -- even though he was simply telling the exact truth.

If you look at the Democrat candidates and representatives in Virginia over the last 20 or 30 years, almost every single one of them who has one statewide is not from Virginia originally. They are Yankees who left their state, but kept their left-wing politics and brought them to Virginia. I am not talking about a small group I’m talking 80 even 90% of Democrats in high office in Virginia in the general assembly congressman the Governor ship, etc. are not from Virginia. I might take the time to actually do the research, but I already know about this, but I might do the research to back it up because it is incredible.
People on our side are talking about a takeover or invasion, I am saying Virginia already has had that happen. And I’m not criticizing any that moved to Virginia? I already said I’m not originally from Virginia. But I do find it weird that people pour in in mass to change the culture of a state to the state they left. If I am wrong about that, so be it but I standby. It is a problem. Posted by: Quint at September 28, 2024 06:49 AM (BYMwh) 125

154, A famous chef I won’t mention his name because he’s now controversial, but he was very well regarded back in the day. He said the five great world cuisines were French. Italian, Chinese Mexican and I think Indian. The point he was making is there are only a handful of world cuisines where people from other countries go out of their way to pay money to eat those cuisines. Mexican is one of those. I personally have had at least attempts at Mexican and Tex-Mex in the UK and France. But you can go to Mexican restaurants in Japan, Australia, India, etc.
No one goes out for Canadian food. And to be honest, very few people go out for German food. So yes, I do think Mexican cuisine is one of the top five or 10 or whatever great world cuisines. And unlike the pretentious liberal snobs, who say they only like “real Mexican” Tex-Mex is also an amazing cuisine I would never go without. I like good Cal-Mex too. Some humor.
I'm visiting the USA and these people are really nosy. I took my girlfriend to the restaurant and before anything else she went to the ladies room. I'm sitting there and this waiter comes over and says would I like to order. So I told him that my girl was in the boghouse. He asked me if I knew what she was having. So I looked at him a little taken aback but then told him she had been in the loo for over 10 minutes so she was probably having a shit. Talk about nosy. Good Morning, Pixy and the 'Rons!
My life is full of worries, so thanks for the dailies, Fen. I will pray that your son gets the job he needs. Currently, politics is my hobby because it's strangely less chaotic than my life. There's a write-in campaign for local elections because all the primary winners were new to the area, narrowly won, and have no platform. One seems oddly supportive of planned parenthood's picks for judges. I know the judges because a "nonpartisan" PAC sent me a flyer with PP's glowing endorsements on top. The pro-life men (boo hiss) judges were at the bottom. Now I know their names. Thanks, PP!! Posted by: NaughtyPine at September 28, 2024 07:44 AM (bBcXd) 216

Italian cooking doesn't count as it is what I grew up with so I and my taste buds are biased. Of the others, Indian is #1 by far (I like really hot food), than Chinese (the meat dishes). French is in the same league as Italian so I don't rate it as foreign, specially since my Dad was from Turin, lots of French influence and different dishes to Rome. I do not eat Mexican if I have a choice. However the only Mexican restaurant food I've had has not been from the South so it may bear little relation to what some willl say is real Mexican. My biggest gripe is too much tomato and I'm a tomato lover.

I well recall all the gnomes in Academe waxing enthusiastic about Tenure. "Controversial opinions must not be silenced! Sunlight is the best disinfectant, we need to explore the guts of an idea in order to blah blah blah!!". They really thought they were all that, and a bag of chips.
All those university cockbites rolled over without a shot, with very very few exceptions. It is unbelievable. Posted by: Common Tater at September 28, 2024 08:21 AM (TC8RU) 289
Israel did not just get Nasrallah, I think between the exploding pagers, and walkies, and goats, and who knows what else, they decapitated the entire organization. The head of the snake is islamic republic of iran, of course. I hope that poisonous boil will be taken care of as well.

Ugh...
I'm grading a student paper written about ovarian cancer. It was written by a young woman who insists on referring to "individuals with a uterus" instead of, ya know, WOMEN. Posted by: "Perfessor" Squirrel at September 28, 2024 08:02 AM (BpYfr) Give her a "C", or and "F." If she asks, tell her she lacks originality in the overall theme and structure, logical coherence and that her paper is void of facts and citations. Wasn't Connie Mack the manager for one of them? Posted by: dantesed at September 28, 2024 08:23 AM Mack managed the Philadelphia Athletics for the club's first 50 seasons of play, starting in 1901, before retiring at age 87 following the 1950 season, and was at least part-owner from 1901 to 1954. Yup, eventually a stadium was built with his name, now sadly gone. To see a baseball hit over the top of the right field wall was amazing. On most recent weekends Encore Westerns has taken to broadcasting the “Lone Star” production company’s John Wayne westerns. I assume because A) they’re either very cheap to license or free in the public domain and B) everybody loves a young John Wayne.
And man is he young and skinny as a rail. It’s a big contrast compared to watching him in say, El Dorado, where the little horse he rode in that was almost as big as Wayne. The plots are barebones and the acting stiff, but still entertaining in a quaint way. “Randy Rides Alone” on now, with “The Trail Beyond”, where Wayne goes to Canada to fight off French-Canadian outlaw kidnappers, up next at 9 a.m. EDT. It’s actually pretty funny to watch someone launch into a rant for no reason, except that the voices in their head told them to do it.

@247/Braenyard on Intel: "They must be doing something right. They just got a contract with Amazon and a contract with IBM and one with the government. All in the last month.
That's a matter of scale. Large customers require large volume and there are very few chip producing companies that can produce to meet that level of demand. Intel's one of them. Intel's main problem seems to be flaws in the design process which leads to quality problems in the final products. When these problems result in hardware and software instability and inaccurate results, the customers expect Intel to address and fix these issues, and we've seen a repeated cycle of this lately. They can overcome this, maybe. Oh, and the United States Government is still buying from Boeing. Again, scale sometimes trumps a certain amount of quality issues because you've got no other good option for what you need.
