SCOTUS upheld those laws in 2020, after the "faithless electors" brouhaha when Trump first got elected.

With I40 and I26 fubared, mid-south transport will be a logistical nightmare for a time. The roads used to bypass those closings are two-lane state/US routes and run through every little town in the sticks. Most of them run along creeks and rivers also.

140 Lincolntf no need to wait til dawn in Beirut, IAF has been administering explosive therapy all night. Apparently in Dahiya, where HQ strike was.

Of course there are a dozen other unrelated possible explanations, but wondering if the IAF targeting naval missile stocks/sites today, I think their first strikes following the HQ festivities, implies a possible Israeli naval component in the days/weeks ahead? Coastal southern Beirut would be a logical location to put surface craft coming from the south at risk.

Significant out-migration apparently happening in Dahiya, after the Israeli warnings to scoot! from that area were given some force by ..... exploding buildings.

Based on the 2016 results (it's surprisingly hard to find out how many districts each candidate won), Trump won 230 districts and 30 states, so 290 EVs, as compared to the 306 he actually won.

Of course, that's just one election. Can't really make an accurate estimate for 2020, for obvious reasons.

In fact there was a brief pause, on both sides, just before the post-beeper leadership big hit. Impossible to say.

179 Meanwhile, in Ukraine:
1. The Ukrainian fortress city of Vuhledar has been surrounded, and the Russians are trying to get the defenders to surrender. Vuhledar is most notable for being the site of multiple failed Russian attacks in the winter of 22-23. At the time, this was taken as evidence of the Russians being incompetent. Perhaps they were, but it was a grim preview of how bloody difficult attacking well-prepared defences would be for the rest of the war.
2. Seven hypersonic missiles were used during two attacks on an airfield in western Ukraine, destroying "up to" eight F-16 fighters. They probably didn't get eight, but the Russians thought it was worth using multiple hypersonics, which they haven't done before.

Congratulations to humanity! Verified sources in Lebanon confirm that Israel has successfully eliminated Hezbollah's leader, Nasrallah. This marks a historic victory for the world, signaling a lasting shift in the Middle East. Iran and its proxies are now gripped by fear, and instead of regional war, a new era of peace is on the horizon. Hezbollah's reign is over. What remains are its final, desperate rockets and bullets. The Middle East, long tormented by Hezbollah's terrorism—killing millions of Syrians, forcibly displacing 9 million Christians, Muslims, and Druze, targeting Kurds, aiding the Houthis' attacks on Saudi Arabia, supporting radical Islamists to strike Bahrain, and slaughtering innocent babies and women in Israel and Iraq—has tonight witnessed the storm of justice. Tonight, justice has stormed in the hands of those who survived the October 7th massacre. Palestinian terrorist Hamas must surrender, free the hostages, and hand over Sinwar—or face the same fate.

No word on strikes in the Bekaa last night but the tempo of attacks doesn't seem to be decreasing. Probably limited by target factors.

Tehran is approaching the point reached by Delta house in the movie - time for "a really futile and stupid gesture on somebody's part". They have yet to "retaliate" for the Haniyeh hit in Tehran - one of the most audacious hits in modern history. And they're now behind by several additional IRGC officers sent to their reward.

I'd bet 10 - but not 100 - $ that what we're seeing is a Hezb eviscerated and in shock, and an Iran still terrified of getting into a serious scrum with Israel.

298 So, worked on the on-again, off again El Camino project car. Between yesterday and today, I got all the exterior lamps working. Much splicing in the tail lamp department. Today was the turn of the side marker lamp in the right front fender. Take battery out to gain access. Change bulb. OK, it works. Now, tucked into the fender cavity there was a big mess of wire harness, going nowhere. Cut the plugs off, and stripped it all out, and traced it back to a firewall grommet under the heater. Inside the car, it went to a few harness plugs, and to the ECM, tucked into the right kick panel. Car was not running on the ECM; it had an engine swap to an older 350, which is wired 1970's style. Out comes the ECM. Out comes the harness across the dash. Out comes the radio, which was scabbed in really nastily. Out comes the diagnostic connector. Out comes the instrument cluster. The pointer on the speedometer was broken, but the speedo works. Found a '55 Studebaker speedo with a broken glass, took it apart. Pried the needle off the spindle. Pried the Chevy needle off its spindle. The Studie needle fit on the Chevy spindle just perfect! Color is right, pointer length is right, too. Happy day!

And yet if they nothing they look cowardly and weak to their people, and they are already deeply unpopular. Quite a nice little dilemma they’ve put themselves in.

321 Tom I think Tehran has been scared and intimidated nearly from the get-go (last October). Certainly as Israel took down Hamas systematically, while mostly ignoring the idiotic peace-mongering interference from the US and other pernicious outsiders. Their fear certainly ramped up as Israel started a systematic campaign against Hezb leadership and assets in Lebanon and Syria, including highly prized ones, with IRGC personnel attached (and killed in the strikes). Then Zahedi, and of course now Grimp Beeper and the command holocaust that followed.

And there was a strong hit on the Houthis, and a mostly ignored one on an Iraqi militia, along the way to reinforce the point.

It's a shitty dilemma. For them and Israel. We have to presume at least some nuclear capabilities, after our insane foreign policies regarding their program. That makes all of this an exceedingly dangerous proposition, when it comes to grabbing Iranian goat by the horns.

Not that it shouldn't be done. But belling that particular cat got a lot harder after Obama, Ben Rhodes, and all his precious know-nothings got us the JCPOA.

I don't think I cut anything vital. At worst, some of the warning lights mediated by the ECM will now not work. I will use compressed air to blow dust and crud from the space behind the dash before I put all the parts back in.

338 Not only did the A-rabs have to invent the diacritical marks to denote vowels for their borrowed Assyrian script,

Admittedly the Jews had to do the same. My/our ancestors had a fine alphabet from the Canaanites but had to switch to the Imperial Aramaic alphabet to keep up with the new Babylonian masters. Which didn't have all the consonants.
And the vowels were barely there at all, so had to be dotted-and-dashed by the Masoretes.

Not necessarily, it may have been just a matter of acting on faith and letting God handle the rest (like the whole bronze serpent thing-it wasn't the metal that did anything, it was obedience, in this case recognizing the message from his dying wife wasn't random gibberish).

There's a news report in passing about a ritual solution in Israel, that wasn't elaborated on, which supports the notion that M Night meant the whole thing to have been a spiritual matter.

The practice of exorcism wouldn't have applied here since the bodies being used by the demons weren't humans created in God's image.

Certainly true of Volvo, LOL. You know, Studebakers of the late 40's and 50's had one of the best heaters in the industry. There was a large heater core under the passenger seat (and dual heaters were optional!). Air from a fender vent went through a blower and into the heater core from below. If it was really cold out, you could close the exterior fender vent, and open an interior door to recirculate inside air. The defroster was a small water-heated coil on the firewall, with its own 2 speed fan, and it took in interior air, and reheated slightly, which increased its capacity to absorb moisture, so it cleared the windshield quite well, even if the heater was not in use. And all the parts were easy to reach for service.

379 Got a call tonight from a buddy in New Port Richey. He spent the evening taking care of his mom, who lives about an hour north up near Hudson. The storm passed there without too much drama, so he drove home and noted everything was fairly quiet there, too.

About ten minutes later, the lights went out. Goes outside to investigate, and there's about two feet of water covering the area he had earlier walked across. By the time he grabbed the cat, the water was up to his thighs as he slogged over to his girlfriend's SUV. Got the cat in and went back to hurry his girlfriend along. Fortunately, she was parked on higher ground, but even so, the water was lapping over the doorframe as they climbed in.

Drove out to the road and he went back to see if he could get his car out too. By then, he saw the water was up to the door handles, so nah.

He went back today and confirmed that the water flooded his home up to a foot in back, half that in the front, which spared the living room furniture. Power is still out

Final skit was the man enters the elevator, then two Japanese geishas scurry in to join him. Then the doors slide closed vertically.

Also serious injuries. All we have here now is Neighbor helping neighbor, trying to help aid and cope. We are completely on our own right now.

F&J Market, the laundromat, and everything on the river side of the road in that area is destroyed. It looks like bombs went off all over the community. My neighbor saw a man floating down old 70 on top of his mobile home this morning, screaming for help. There was no way to help him. The water was so fast. I'm sure there will be more casualties. My God, I've never seen anything like this."

404 Not only did the A-rabs have to invent the diacritical marks to denote vowels for their borrowed Assyrian script,

Posted by: gKWVE

Parallel evolution. Halfway around the world..... well, maybe 1/3 of the way around..... the Koreans wrote Hangul the same way. Consonants, with other marks around them to add vowels to them.

417 Anyone else ever rationalize playing craps and blackjack is a great practical application of statistics?
-----

Playing caps and blackjack requires the practical application of *probability*, not statistics.
Statistics is what the casino uses to detect funny business.
Probability is the future (will he make his point?), while statistics is the past (is this dealer going bust more than she should?).

They are related, but require... different... mindsets to use. I aced probability in math, but struggled to a (just barely) B in using stats in a measurement class.

421 For sure blackjack and poker are great examples of probability, statistics, and even game theory. Poker can open up game theory that can even be applied to warfare, and other human pursuits.

On the other hand, When you look at legal gambling, such as blackjack or poker in a casino or sports betting or example, You realize it is not complicated. It is simple. In blackjack or sports betting, the player makes a risk that won’t be paid off in relation to the risk he takes. The mask makes it impossible for the large group of players to win, As a group, they are simply paying a toll for the entertainment.

Casino pokers even more simple, You play against each other not the house in the house charges you a fare. The house wins every dealt. If they charge too much, Even the best player in the world cannot possibly win, They try to keep the charge just enough that you think it is possible to have a chance.

423 There are many movies about casinos going after blackjack card counters. The reality in Vegas is they do go after card counters. I like this a bit to Trump derangement syndrome. The casinos go after blackjack card counters because they think that is what they’re supposed to do.

The reality is 90% of people counting cards in Vegas have no clue what they’re doing and are long-term losers. Also, when other players sees someone win, it makes them bet more and it helps that casino. The number show the casinos are winning, and if you don’t trust the numbers, check out the skyscrapers.

Even the idea of card counting has made billions for Las Vegas.

429 422, people win every day in casinos, that is why they do it, they have a chance, The casinos have the odds with them. They’re just not about the up-and-down based on the individual not even the up-and-down based on the day or a week. They know that overtime they will get all the money and that is why they do everything they can to get every player to simply keep betting. One of the differences between casinos and players is players believe there’s a thing called a streak.

You’ll get players and even people that ride about gambling talk about amplifying a streak or never giving up when you’re on a hot streak. Casinos think otherwise, They know in the end, they will get it all as long as you play the more you pay them. In the end, it is not talent or luck the numbers of the games are already cooked in.

When you look at gambling and the impact of variance, you realize even the games were even, Which they are not, It would still be extremely unlikely to win in the long term unless you had a bankroll of billions like the casinos do.

432 Of course, Quint. I understand.

Gambling is not my *thing*-- I only went the one time, had some fun, and managed to come out ahead.

Because I *walked away.*

The allure of Free Money is very strong, and so many sacrifice their financial security for that elusive payoff.... very sad.

Posted by: JQ at September 28, 2024 04:05 AM (njWTi)

433 432, you did the right thing, you quit when you were ahead. I wasn’t trying to bash gambling, and I do realize people win. In fact, the gambling industry needs people to win.

I’m glad you won. That is cool. I’ve known many people that did just that same thing and then they have a really great memory.

I will say this one thing if you ever look into people who have lost millions of gambling, Those same people won millions as well, That is how the thing works.

When you look at casino games clearly you see how the casino advantage is built-in. The more welcoming the game, the greater the casino advantage. You see this was slot machines and roulette. They have the greatest advantage because they are the most welcoming. Games like blackjack and craps are less welcoming in the casino has a slightly less strong advantage.

Sure, there are legit professional gambler, who make a living they do exist, but they are less common than even the average professional baseball player. Probably professional poker players of the most famous and many of them are extremely smart. But it is also well-known that many of them are gambling addicts that will piss away their Poker winnings

Posted by: Quint at September 28, 2024 04:14 AM (BYMwh)

434 At a blackjack table just to get that gambling high. I have no problems with gambling. I think learning basic strategy at blackjack is a good idea, I think learning about poker is an excellent idea because poker can teach you a lot about life game theory and so many challenging issues we all face they use it even for warfare.

If I thought I was a great poker player, which I don’t, even though I played for 30 years, I would try to find a local game that doesn’t have the casino. Rake, The casino rake is in all games. That’s how they built the skyscrapers. When I look at people talking about or going along with sports betting, I really kinda have to laugh in a sad way. It is simply impossible to beat sports betting and anyone who says otherwise is lying to you. If you do it for fun then great a lot of people blow 100 bucks on a meal at a French restaurant.

Posted by: Quint at September 28, 2024 04:18 AM (BYMwh)

435 The worst are: the non-pro gamblers, what *think* they know it all, and spend ALL their earnings on That Elusive Payoff what *never* happens...

Have known only 2 such, in my life, and that was enough.

Posted by: JQ at September 28, 2024 04:20 AM (njWTi)

436 435, in my opinion, one of the most dangerous times in life is to be kind of knowledgeable of a subject. When you are kind of an intermediate learner, whether it be a language or learning about wine or gambling or whatever that is the most dangerous time because that’s when you think you know a lot, but you do not. Better to be a total beginner or an expert, who is dealt with decades of the stuff. I think there’s an old saw about that but sometimes a little knowledge is the worst.

Posted by: Quint at September 28, 2024 04:23 AM (BYMwh)

437 Quint, I'm only referring to the casual gambler-- you know, they guy with a family but low-income & thinks he can 'beat the house with this one cool trick' that he heard from a friend of a friend, and then loses the rent money.

Semi-pros have a better chance.

I was once married to a gambling type. "Number Two" is how I refer to him. Never will speak his name again--

Gambled everything he could, and thank God we didn't live near any LEGAL casinos, the ill iggles were costly enough!

Posted by: JQ at September 28, 2024 04:29 AM (njWTi)

438 437, I think everyone should sit at a blackjack table, low price blackjack table for a few hours. You will hear people spew the most incredible nonsense and they take it seriously.

They will criticize some random person. “Taking their card” Because that person made its choice that other Rando would not have made. Pro tip, If you ever hear someone at a blackjack table, say someone else “took their card”, Then you know for sure that person knows nothing about gambling. They could be good people probably they are, but they don’t know anything about gambling.

Posted by: Quint at September 28, 2024 04:36 AM (BYMwh)

439 Took me many years after that, to even purchase a scratch ticket-- saw Number Two buy up 20 bucks' worth, scratch, collect, buy another 20... until he'd burnt a hundred dollars!

And then he wanted to "borrow" (hah! as if!) more from me.... Fk that!

Dude was an addict. Good riddance.

I only buy *occasionally* like, couple times A YEAR.

Posted by: JQ at September 28, 2024 04:37 AM (njWTi)

Like you say, Quint, the players blab stupidly, and it's better to be able to walk by.

Posted by: JQ at September 28, 2024 04:40 AM (njWTi)

441 Jq, all kidding aside the new one who thinks you can make a living up of gambling. It’s slide out delusional. Yes, you could be better at poker than the average person, but you also have to deal with the casino rake which mentioned above. There is also this thing called variance, which newbies to gambling don’t seem to care about, but the reality is variance is probably the most important thing when it comes to Winning at gambling.

The theory the varied and the reality is that even if you are playing better than your opponents, you can still continue to lose for a very long time. Play poker, for example, for a living, you have to have so much money to cover various that could last for months or even years that you can continue to lose. That is the reality and legitimate poker pro would tell me that is the case. Who has so much money that they can lose for months and years at their job?

Posted by: Quint at September 28, 2024 04:41 AM (BYMwh)

442 440, Watch for sure have some fun. I won’t lie I once thought that maybe I could be a poker pro or a blackjack pro. Even the best poker pros will tell you it’s a horrible way to make a living. You’re sitting at a casino with some really shady characters at 12 hours a day just to eat out some advantage that you created studying and working for years.

Every poker pro will tell you the person you want to be is the guy that already has a great living and is just showing up at the table to have fun.

Posted by: Quint at September 28, 2024 04:43 AM (BYMwh)
