Sometimes I've Believed As Many As Six Impossible Things Before The ONT

Everything you need to know about US Navy submarines

Ever since the Turtle was used to try to breach the British blockade during the Revolutionary War, the U.S. Navy has continued to pursue submarine technology and its advancement. Submarines are a vital part of America’s defense, along with many other allied nations.

The U.S. officially entered the underwater world of warfare after purchasing the USS Holland (SS-1) in 1900. It was commissioned on Oct. 12, 1900. John Holland designed the USS Holland, which was used for experimental purposes during its 10-year career.

When World War I kicked off, the threat of submarines existed, but it was not prevalent due to the early stages of developing submarine manufacturing and technology. At the time, the Navy had 11 different classes of submarines that used a combination of diesel-electric propulsion systems.

The diesel-electric submarines were a step up from the previous steam-powered submarines, though the British Royal Navy’s K-class submarines used in WWI were steam-powered. Submarines played a minor part in WWI’s overall warfare.

Interesting that they skipped Hunley. I get that it was a CSA boat, but it might at least get a mention. Anyhow, learn all about bubbleheads at the link.

Secular Religion

In the battle for America’s soul, every issue is theological

Whether we’re dealing with shamans, witch doctors, or neurosurgeons, no other ethic on this planet will ultimately treat you as anything more than a number. Each according to his abilities, each according to his needs — you’re reduced to a formula or a slogan. But you are certainly not seen as a child of God, and that will not be tolerated.
We’ve lied to ourselves for far too long about our role in this con as Americans. The truth is simple, even if it isn’t easy: Every issue is a theological issue. Every choice humans make is an expression of worship. All of it.
“Secular” doesn’t exist. The people who sold secularism to you are now openly proving that the lie was the point all along. They are demonically intent on replacing the old-time religion with a new one. And as they looked from man to pig and pig to man and back again, they couldn’t tell the difference. This is how it always ends. Something will always rule, and something will always be worshiped. There is no way around those two iron laws of creation. So will it be the lie of accommodation, the lie of neutrality, the lie of co-existence? Or will it be the truth?
If you need to get comfortable with something, why not try the truth for once?

IME, most people who call themselves athiest simply have something else that fills the role of religion in their life. It may be ego, it may be technology it may be authority, but their relationship with whatever it is is no different that a Christian's elationship with God.

Sabotage

Biden Is Totally Trying to Sabotage the Harris-Walz Campaign

Remember when Biden announced — by tweet on a Sunday afternoon! — that he was completely voluntarily and freely of his own strong will dropping out of the race? And how a couple of hours later he finally remembered to announce that, oh yeah, he's also endorsing Harris?
If that sequence of events, from the Obama-Pelosi cabal forcing him out to his slow-rolled endorsement, didn't leave a bitter taste in Biden's mouth, it's only because he can no longer remember the flavor.

And what does Biden care, really, who the next president is? He knows his legacy is the first incumbent president to get forced off his reelection ticket by a cabal of party insiders who were more powerful than a sitting president. And, given Biden's mental and physical decline, that's not really a subject for debate.

Besides, the Biden crime family got a good four years of looting the treasury, Jill got to play-act as POTUS, and Hunter will almost certainly get his pardon.
For a mid-wit schemer with no talents aside from cheap demagoguery and expensive graft, that's not such a bad way to go out.

Still, there is that little matter of Biden's prickly ego. Harris is all but running as the challenger to Biden's record, such as it is, with her "new way forward" BS. She dropped him and all "their" accomplishments faster than Usain Bolt fired out of a cannon attached to a Falcon 9 rocket.

So if Biden somehow manages to deny Harris his reelection prize with backhanded compliments like that one on The View, could you blame him?

Nothing I've ever seen from Biden tells me that he has any loyalty to anyone but himself.

Economic Collapse In Slow Motion

Commercial real estate bears a disproportionate share of the city’s fiscal burden. As those values decline dramatically, the short-term fix will be increasing residential property taxes. That will reduce residential real estate values, and drive more upper-income residents out of the city. Which could turn into a financial death spiral.

Why are Minneapolis’s problems so acute? Because of crime. Formerly a low-crime city, the George Floyd riots and accompanying attacks on law enforcement have caused a dramatic increase in the rate of serious crime. That has caused businesses, as well as individuals, to avoid the city. With leases continuing to expire, there is no reason to think the downward trends have bottomed out.

The City of Minneapolis, meanwhile, is exploring ways of redeveloping George Floyd Square in a manner that will, in the mayor’s words, “honor the life of George Floyd, and point toward a more equitable future.” Somehow, I don’t think that is the focus that the city needs if it is to recover economically.

I'm pretty sure that sometime in the next 4 years, we're going to have a 1929 style business collapse, and the party in power will take the blame.

Nearly Automatic for the People: The Great American Story of Waffle House

Folks needing food when they are tired, or working odd hours, or on a budget, or just want something familiar have been finding such comfort at Waffle House for over 60 years now, in good times and bad, all hours of the day, every day.

“It is indeed marvelous. An irony-free zone where everything is beautiful and nothing hurts, for everybody regardless of race, creed, color, or degree of inebriation is welcomed,” Anthony Bourdain narrated over his own first experience at Waffle House for his TV show Parts Unknown. The man whose oeuvre became eating anything with anyone anywhere just had to get in on the scattered, smothered, and covered cultural institution, in this case in Charleston, South Carolina. “Its warm yellow glow, a beacon of hope and salvation, inviting the hungry, the lost, the seriously hammered all across the South to come inside, a place of safety and nourishment. It never closes. It is always, always faithful, always there for you.”

FEMA does indeed use the “Waffle House Index" to determine the severity of natural disasters. Today I saw a picture from Florida of a Waffle House boarded up tighter than a bank vault. Stay safe, Florida 'rons and 'ettes.

Tonight's ONT has been brought to you by OSHA:

I remember during the gay marriage debate it was regular for the pro side to bring up ancient Greece.

Well, homosexuality was certainly normalized in some times and in some cities in Greece "ancient" giving a whole lot of time to cover and Greece having controlled much of the ancient world at various points.

But...those gay relationships were between men and boys. What we would today call pedophilia. And that...THAT...is the model that these people believed was something we should embrace?!?

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at September 26, 2024 10:06 PM (d9fT1)

The Royal Navy had all but given-up trying to decrease losses to U-Boats and sink U-Boats, until in desperation they tried something their experts said would not work: The convoy system. Before that became standard operating procedure, British, Commonwealth, and allied nation merchant ships sailed individually. Royal Navy anti-submarine vessels were searching the entire Western Approaches for U-Boats. The probability of finding a single, independent U-Boat in that expanse of water was small. The convoy system turned the tide against the U-Boats. In WW2, Great Britain instituted convoys ASAP after war was declared.

TBH my take was always that the Greeks couldn't figure out how to work together for any length of time.

The defeated Persia with an alliance and shortly thereafter feel into an internecine war that devastated the Greek world...and followed it up with war after war after war.

Ironically "Greece" had its best chance at uniting when their hillbilly cousins in Macedon came in and forcibly made them all ally together. But Alexander didn't build anything that would last and died too young.

IIRC, the simplest forms of life on Earth today require more than 800 proteins to function. 800 proteins each made up of 100 to 300 amino acids chained together in EXACTLY the correct order.

Even serious origin-of-life scientists have concluded that perhaps 200 unique proteins would be needed for even the most primitive no-frills form of life imaginable to reproduce.

So how do 200 proteins form spontaneously in the same place, in exactly the right orders, so life can begin?

And to make the question a little tougher, consider that proteins don't occur in nature. Life needs to produce them.

189 From our own Muldoon a few years ago:

(1) A babies heart:
Consider for a few moments the heart of a human baby. It is a few ounces of muscle, fat and connective tissue that has a rhythmic, self-sustaining electrical system. It consists of two separate but remarkably similar pumps, the right and left sides of the heart. It is fully formed by the 8th week of gestation, and continues to beat rhythmically, steadily and continuously for up to 100 years, without any outside help in the vast majority of instances. The stunning symmetry of the microscopic arrangement of myosin and actin protein fibers creates a highly efficient pumping machine. The delicate and yet durable valves regulate the direction of blood flow through the veins and arteries. Consider the simple mechanical elegance of this one single organ.

And then ask yourself one question...

Is there any conceivable way that this was the result of a slimy puddle of primordial goo randomly organizing with this heart as the accidental (natural selection) result?

Two points at which Divine Intervention would seem to be needed.

One, of course, is the Initial Creation of everything.

More pertinent to the current discussion, there's the sudden appearance of the original eukaryotic cell. Three and a half million years or so went by, with non-nucleated cells bobbing about with no progress, then one day, a mere 550 million years ago, boom! not just a cell with a nucleus, but packed and ready to go to blossom into all life on earth. Funny, that.

Article I read decades ago explained how, when prokaryotic cells fossilized, they looked like they had nuclei, which fooled scientists for a while into thinking life-as-we-know-it was around for billions of years. Nope. Suddenly. 550mya. Everything needed for progression of life.

238 We bought a 13,000 watt Generac a few years ago that runs on natural gas. My wife told the Sales Rep (well, actually he was an older guy that was president of the local install company) that we were getting ready for the burning times.
He didn't bat an eye.

It will run just about everything in the house except the electric stove and the clothes dryer (they run on heavy 220 Volt current). It will keep our two fridges, chest freezer and upright freezer running (we have a lot of meat stored in the freezers). If we lose power, we have to get out one of the old microwaves in the basement to plug in.
We have lost power a couple of times, and it kicked right in with no interruption.

Almost 6:30AM and I'm tired.

Important note about cheapo generators: Everything appliance today has "electronics" in it, and those electronics are delicate and cheap and they are made by chinese children.

A few years ago a father son team from Australia came here to buy an old racing sailboat. It was a good boat but built for buoy racing not offshore sailing and it had road hard. Son had some basic sailing experience, dad had almost no boating experience at all and he was nearly 70.

They left right in the middle of the winter to sail back to Australia from Rhode Island. Made about 150 miles offshore in a squall and the Coasties had to go rescue them while risking their lives.

312 Though I never took the Sloop New Dawn into truly heavy seas, I have spent a sportfishing day at sea, aboard a Wellcraft 24 ft. Airslot. Single, Ford 460 engine with 20 hp. Evinrude "kicker".

Twelve foot seas, eighteen miles off of Port Aransas, TX.

STEEP waves.

Skipper and I alternated fifteen minutes at the helm, in order to stave off fatigue. And gotta give the man his navigational dues. Nailed the Sea Bouy on the damn nose. And this was in the Before GPS days.

And, oh, dear LORD... did we ever hit the docks with a boatload of fish! Worth every penny we tipped the "helpers" there with the gutting and filleting.

Observation. Don't EVEN fuck with 12 ft. seas unless you're a passenger on a cruise ship. And then, even...stay away from the damn railings!

313 Bucs (Tampa Bay) & Panthers (Charlotte) both have home games scheduled this Sunday, in their outdoor stadia.

Wonder if they'll be able to play those games, particularly Tampa. If one or both of those games are "postponed due to hurricane," I wonder what the NFL's contingency plan is?

The NFL can't simply drop those games into the Bucs' & Panthers' scheduled bye weeks, I don't think. Because their scheduled opponents for Sunday have different bye weeks.

Texas Storms I knew and loved.

Tropical Storm Allison. Tropical Storm Bertha. Tropical Storm Fay. Tropical Storm Bill. HURRICANE Claudette. Tropical Storm Grace.

Every storm above this sentence, I rode out while aboard the Sloop New Dawn. All storms which follow, were those that I experienced while ashore. Storms that were "near misses", such as hit Beaumont, but not Galveston, are not included in these mentions.

HURRICANE Rita. I decamped the Sloop New Dawn for that one, opting to accept a invite/request, from a family in Dayton, TX, who had zero storm experience. Ironically, the storm largely missed Galveston, and rang up a bullseye on... Dayton, TX. I did accomplish my purpose though. Those folks needed a TON of help, which I did as well as possible with the scant few tools on hand.

Having became a landlubber in 2006, then, HURRICANE Dolly. Tropical Storm Edouard. HURRICANE IKE. Tropical Storm Bill. Tropical Storm Patricia. HURRICANE Harvey. Tropical Storm Imelda. Tropical Storm Beta. HURRICANE Nicholas. HURRICANE Beryl.

-------------

"While in the North Atlantic, roughly 200 miles south of eastern Newfoundland, the QE2 runs into a rampaging Hurricane Luis.

While passengers are ordered to remain in their quarters, the ship’s bow is hit by a 95ft rogue wave at around 4am. From the vantage point of the bridge, the wave is akin to a large wall of water, leading Captain Ronald Warwick to comment later: “It looked as though the ship was headed for the white cliffs of Dover.”
----------
I had a personal conversation with Capt Warwick about this. I asked how he estimated the height of the wave, he replied, 'I was on the bridge, and had to look up at the bloody thing'. The foredeck was caved in, and had to be repaired before the return trip.

338 Here in NE Okla., we've been 'way too dry for weeks. Not quite dust-bowl conditions. Yet.

Some nice things about drought. Bug count is low, especially mosquitos. If we do get a bit of rain, as we did last week, it soaks in or burns off fast. Doggeh and I can walk through the morning grass and not deal with dew. The dead lawn makes a nice crunchy sound as we walk.

Y'all down in hurricane land, we'll take some of that water. Send it our way. You can keep the tornadoes, we've got plenty of our own.

That style of splitter was not uncommon back in the Depression era. Hydraulics were rare and expensive. You could make a wheel splitter from an old tractor wheel, and drive it by flat belt from your newer tractor. I believe some of the better ones had a swing or tilt table to move the round into position, so the user's hands never had to come near the blade. Safety glasses are must.

I don't think gas prices work like they used to. I don't know why. Remember how they would shoot up at "gulf hurricanes" and "Middle East unrest"? Got both those things and it went DOWN a dime around here.

* searches *

The Guinness Record for measured pressure drop in a tornado was "The Tulia Tornado" in Texas in 2007, where the pressure dropped 194 mb from ambient, from around 882 mb down to 688.4 mb. (or 0.43 Kamala.)

The report attributed 1mb of that to the "10 meter increase in elevation" of the sensor over "a 60s period."

Accurate readings are hard to come by, for obvious reasons. Storm chasers aren't quite that insane. You've gotta place the sensor and hope its right under the path.

3 to 4 mtr and rising swells. Wind about 40 knots. The fishing boat was only 5 mtrs long. Top speed only 10 knots. Just about swamped a few times and we were so far out we couldn't see land. I,m a grunt not a matelot. Near on had a wobbly lip. Very scarey.

Though I *have* had it damn near that bad, solo, in a 12 ft. grossly overpowered with a 20 horse Evinrude, on an inland Texas lake...

... I'll not compare mine to yours. Southern Ocean is a Death Sentence writ on Angry Waves.

And.... don't forget the $28 dollar pizza or the $30 non-cuban cigar.

The pizza, btw, was a one topping medium, chased (sipped) by some $9 buck Aussie domestic swill.

Now I know they used to hang a piece of rope outside the teepee. If the rope was wet, they knew it was raining. If the rope was moving, they knew it was windy. How they determined such things before they invented rope I have no idea.

Yeahhhhh, the first time I did shrooms was because the acid was taking too long to kick in. But back in 1986, while there were "brownies", they were not really a thing yet. You had to be able to make your own and they were kind of pungent.

For a while in college (mid '70s), there was hash around. Now I'd made pot brownies before but hash ones? Those were the best. Hash oil was pretty wild, too; talk about a stone.
