Titian Jacopo1.jpg

Portrait of Jacopo Strada
Tiziano Vecellio

I don't know what's going on there, but even Joe Biden is a little creeped out.

Just kidding...he asked for her babysitter's number.

32 Portrait of Jacopo Strada
1567-68
Oil on canvas, 125 x 95 cm
Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna

In the final period, which saw Titian focussing his attention on religious themes, he still found the energy to paint portraits. Between 1567 and 1568 he produced two of his greatest masterpieces in this field: the Prado Self-Portrait and the Portrait of Jacopo Strada in Vienna.

The portrait of the well-known antiquarian Jacopo Strada, one of the most famous of Titian's late portraits, represents Jacopo Strada, an expert of antiquities as presenting a small Venus statue. On the table there are some objects, among them a letter addressed to Titian. The decorative frame with the inscription is a later addition from the workshop of Titian.

The painting is of the very highest quality. It is painted in energetic dabs of brown and ochre yellow, offset by the black velvet jerkin with a silver fox fur flung around the shoulders. The careful depiction of the details which allude to the profession of the sitter (the statuette, the coins, the cartouche and the books) do not distract from the characterization of Strada, who is looking enquiringly at someone outside the painting.

41 Well done but odd. I'd pass hanging.

Jacopo Strada
Jacopo Strada (1515–158 was an architect, goldsmith, sought after art expert and above all an internationally active antique dealer. The heavy gold chain distinguishes him as a member of court, the sword and the fur sliding from his right shoulder are evidence of his solid wealth. Strada’s posture is unique in Titian’s portraiture: the counter-movement of arms and head lend him dynamism and distance the observer. Whether Titian meant here subtly to criticise Strada’s occasionally aggressive business dealings remains a matter of debate.

49 Strada was not only an official book keeper, but also had many other qualities, and this portrait portrays him in his study surrounded by objects displaying his knowledge. He is shown wearing a gold chain, probably awarded him the previous year 1566 when he was appointed Antiquarius Caesareus by his employer Maximilian II, Holy Roman Emperor.

The inscription upper right reads JACOBVUS DE STRADA CIVIS ROMANVS CAESS. ANTIQVARIVS ET COM. BELIC. AN: AETAT: LI: et C.M.D.L. XVI (Jacopo de Strada, citizen of Rome, imperial Antiquary and Minister, aged 51 in the year 1566). The painting is signed top left: "TITIANVS F (ECIT)". The letter on the table additionally contains the words Titian Vecellio Venezia.

It had to be. Powerful men in a violent era are *not* going to be gentle. Even powerful men in peaceful eras are not gentle, they just tend farm out the violence to subordinates.

But in art, that rarely comes across. They just wind up looking like poofters to my modern eyes. I know that in reality, almost none of them would hesitate to put a sword between my ribs. They just don't look it when on canvas.

76 Strada was apparently a something of a renaissance man in Rome, winning awards (the medal around his neck) and other things. The books, coins, expensive clothing all point to his stature. I assume the nude figure is something he created or studied and may have been understood at the time but it seems odd now. (Especially with Biden in our lives.)

Not much to say about the art. It is the usual brilliant use of realism, light, color and detail that was Titian's trademark. It's easy to understand why Titian portraits were so popular in his day.

You nailed it there. It was *notation.* Nothing more. You don't use Roman numerals for arithmetic. You can't, and neither could the Romans. The numerals were for writing down the answer, not arriving at the answer.

They used calculators for arithmetic (the abacus).

In a career that flourished well into her 80s, Smith played the stern yet compassionate Professor Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter series and the irascible Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham, in Downton Abbey.

What a monumental PITA that would be. If it were common, they would have used a different numeral system. Someone would have done something different within engineering circles, and that would have leaked out.

I subscribe to the argument that the Romans didn't use their numerals for intermediate math, and it was a downstream consequence of mechanized arithmetic. The argument that without a powerful underlying tool (the abacus), there is no way the numeral system is viable.

But I wasn't there. Maybe they did some witchcraft to make it work. Chinese Arithmetic is a thing, too, even though I can't grok it.

I am hard to fit when it comes to shoes. My feet are not an unusual size, but they are at the outer edges of normality in terms of structure. Finding comfortable shoes is a chore. I have had extremely good luck with New Balance, and have run into this exact problem: the product lines expire and then you're back at square one.

Go to a NB store if there's one near you. In my experience, they work hard and *will* fit you. It just sucks to have to keep doing it. And it sucks that NB doesn't do boots anymore. Also, don't be afraid of - or even ask explicitly about - insoles. In my case, I have stopped being hard to fit thanks to some of their very good specialty insoles. I bought several pairs - at great expense - and they make probably 70% of shoes fit me well. I can buy shoes anywhere now, so long as I have the extra equipment. All feet are different, of course.

Social media is an afterthought. The election is already underway with absentee ballots already starting to get mailed out. And yet they were still figuring out budgets for advertising!!
Isn’t this what you do in June and July? Not in late September.

If this is representative of the GOP nationally, a lot of things start to make sense.

259 I'm so sad about Dame Maggie Smith! She was one of the best yet most unpretentious actresses. It was a job, and she did it to perfection.

To honor her this weekend, I could watch Gosford Park, Hook, Death on the Nile, Murder by Death, Sister Act... or just rewatch all of Downton Abbey. Not feeling a Harry Potter marathon at the moment.

260 Last week's Columbo here had Johnny Cash as the guest-murderer. It was really good, including Cash playing three or four times.
Posted by: andycanuck

One thing I just learned about Cash is that he was born in Arkansas. Arkansas just put him in Statuary Hall.

The crew is supposed to do that. I wouldn't make the final payment until that's done.

When we had our roof replaced two years, the crew did multiple passes with a magnetic sweeper. Actually, that procedure should be outlined in the contract.

NYP reports:

"Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denounced the United Nations General Assembly as a “swamp of antisemitic bile” during a fiery address Friday morning — as dozens of diplomats walked out in protest ahead of the speech."

By walking out ahead of his speech, they proved his point.

I'm 8/7.5 EE. Sucks. Apparently NB doesn't run wide anymore. I bought a shoe called Hoka bondi which runs wide. It felt weird at first - has a thick sole, almost bouncy, but once I got used to, they feel great.

Researching just a bit...
Jack Cassidy and Robert Culp are in three in the original series with McGoohan just two. So McGoohan's other two must have been in the second, much-later series.

Don't know about Culp's and Cassidy's murderer-count in the original or if they had any second series' appearances.

The roofing contractor had the entire house "tented" with tarps covering all the shrubs and bushes. The tarps extended about 15 feet out from the house, attached to the edges of the roof. All the debris slid down the tarps.
