Overnight Open Thread - 11/10/2024
[Roger Ball]

melon2.jpg

Do not be alarmed, Oh Great HORDE, this NOT the Gardening Thread. The banner is offered in the spirit of never giving in. After being attacked by a well-meaning but misguided weed whacker, the watermelon vine refuses to give in.

No,wait…maybe giving in is an idea that has become a good thing. Remember this?

Tractor Supply Recognized for Diversity and Inclusion in the Workplace

Tractor Supply Company(NASDAQ: TSCO), the largest rural lifestyle retailer in the United States, announced today it has been recognized by two separate entities as a diverse and inclusive workplace. For the second consecutive year, the Company exceeded the threshold for inclusion on the Bloomberg Gender Equality Index, while Newsweek featured Tractor Supply on its inaugural list of America’s Greatest Workplaces for Diversity.

Well? Apparently and thankfully, this is what “giving in” looks like now: Rural retailer Tractor Supply eliminates DEI roles, Pride support and carbon emissions goals

The retailer said in a Thursday release that it will no longer submit data to the Human Rights Campaign, an LGBTQ advocacy group. The company will also stop sponsoring Pride festivals and voting campaigns, the release said. The company previously earned a perfect score on the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s 2022 Best Places to Work Corporate Equality Index.

I went to my local TS to get a propane tank filled. $3.00/gallon and immediate friendly service. (Full disclosure: I’m a pasty white guy.) Plus, set up in front of the store was a display to help homeless veterans.

TS_vet.jpg

I talked to an Army vet for a bit then decided to go into the store and look around. I know I don’t have to tell the HORDE about TS, but I had not been in one for a long time. Candy store is a good analogy. I made a point to ask the employees (“workers” for our demokkkrat readers.) how they liked working for the company. They all seemed to genuinely enjoy working for TS.

For the aviation geeks among us, I just read an update about the Electra EL-2 Goldfinch hybrid-electric aircraft program. I’m a biased old codger so I immediately discount tales of “sustainable electric airplanes” along with unicorns. (Although, I’m still open to discussing unicorns.) But this one is unique, being a hybrid. The turbogenerator is being built by SAFRAN, which has a long history of building helicopter turbine engines.

EL-2.jpg

And you know the DoD can’t wait to get its well lubricated paws on it:

Electra’s nine-passenger design has garnered contracts from the Air Force, Army, and Navy, which view it as a potential game-changer for military resupply missions, tactical insertions, and medical evacuations. The firm is also backed by Lockheed Martin… “Its hybrid-electric propulsion system provides extended range and endurance, making it suitable for Agile Combat Employment missions in austere locations with compromised or nonexistent runways.”

At least one feature stands out to me as increasing the design’s potential for success. It’s hybrid so it’s still an oil burner. If there is JP8/JET fuel available, the thing should be able to fly. It also uses lithium-ion batteries so, I guess as long as they don’t set themselves on fire, they will provide enough battery power to get to safety if the fuel is gone or the turbogenerator breaks. I wonder about Li-ion battery fire suppression…

From the “Your Tax Dollars at Work” files, the FAA should contract out their recruiting services to the DoD. Eh? FAA Exceeds FY ’24 Controller Hiring Target

Earlier this week, the FAA announced it has exceeded its hiring goal for air traffic controllers for fiscal year 2024 (ending Sept. 30). A total of 1,811 new hires have signed on, eleven more than the target figure of 1,800. The agency said in a statement that the figure was the highest in nearly 10 years and represents “important progress” toward stemming a decades-long decline in ATC staffing numbers.

ATC.jpg

Notice anything? Apparently, unlike at Harvard, Asians are okay again.
“Because diversity is so critical, FAA actively supports and engages in a variety of associations, programs, coalitions and initiatives to support and accommodate employees from diverse communities and backgrounds. Our people are our strength, and we take great care in investing in and valuing them as such.”

I don’t see any blind, psychotic, dwarf amputees in the picture so I sense a big class action lawsuit soon.

[SSI-Satire Sidebar Interlude] With the emphasis on Asian persuasion, the Harris/Dr Jill Junta continues the policy of ensuring CCP representation across government agencies and administrations. Her team will be officially installed as the TFTTT (Temporary Fundamental Transformation Transition Team) in January 2025 and will remain the sole source of governance until such time as the CCP can establish a permanent colonial ruling structure. What do ya think, HORDE? Too much?

Now here’s a realtor with a sense of humor:

sold.jpg

She pulled the ad and she works the Midland-Odessa area so I don’t know how many commies would actually be living there. But I will salute her for creativity.

Hat tip to WeirdDave, reposting for emphasis…

Apparently Trump winning means that men now have the right to rape women. And this is a proven fact, because our leftist friends heard in another thread (some forum I wasn't reading) that someone posted that someone they knew had been told by some unnamed guy that he could rape her now.

Hey, I'll volunteer to do an ONT. My qualifications: I have HTML skills, and I know how not to blow the margins with pix and video embeds. I usually close tags. I have my own dental plan (no teeth). I'm fluent in American, Moron, and Okie. I know how to wield an Oxford comma and am skilled at employing the semi-colon. I am punctual and reliable unless I'm taking a nap. As for content, I have no special area of interest or expertise to recommend me, nor have a sense of humor, and my taste in music could, generously, be called eclectic. I will institute a new feature, the Mannix babe of the week. I promise not to post more than one Yoko Ono video per ONT, and I won't put more than two of my own webworks in any post. This offer of service to AoS is contingent upon approval by MiladyJo. With whom I have not discussed this.

At the point in the show when an Illinois Air National Guard F-16 was scheduled to do a performance, the plane came thundering to lakefront from the west (ie, over the city) at tree-top level, afterburners going full blast. It was loud as hell. You could hear the route the pilot took over the Lincoln Park neighborhood by the line of car alarms he triggered. It was absolutely wonderful!

And weird anecdote I ran across in his A Parliament of Women he has women taking power in Athens and in doing so taking on the looks of men - wearing fake beards and getting tans, and more interesting - not shaving their armpits.

I had read that the introduction of armpit shaving came with the popularity of sleeveless dresses in the early 1900s but...I guess as usual that was way too much of "we smart moderns do this, our ancestors where are brutish hair covered beasts"

The Year When Stardust Fell by Raymond Jones was about all the internal combustion motors being destroyed by the Earth being brushed by a comet tail, and one of the horror elements was spotty reports from a cruise ship that was adrift in the Atlantic that had a working radio with the survivors pleading for rescue as the passengers and crew turned into cannibalistic mobs when the food ran out.

Turned me right off of cruises.

Raynond Jones wrote the novelette that was turned into This Island Earth, by the way

Sorta grazed the fence and it took one of his landing gear off! He felt the hit and saw the gear in the field on the return pass. Called his guys at the airport, they met him in a truck with the necessary tools, bolts, jacks, ets. He landed it in a nearby field in a bunch of tall Johnson grass - successfully! They jacked it up, reattached the gear, pushed the bird onto the road and he flew it home.

I'm sure they're asking for donations but I don't think it's for a recount. They are $200 Million in debt after raising over a billion. Besides, I don't think Pelosi, Schumer, Obama, Biden, et.al., want a forensic analysis of 2024 and the 'missing' voters. They aren't missing, they never existed. That's how they stole 2020 and those cast of criminals I listed all knew and were a part of it. No, they don't want any recounts. This cash plea is to cover campaign debt.

Not only that I keep saying that he pinned her down during the debate on protecting 8 and 9 month olds in the womb which was extremely shrewd, and ended up showing her demonic ways for what they really are. She had a chance to do it but there is too much money in her party in the sale of baby parts and Trump knows it.

Whether that was part of the shift or maybe it was just a visceral feeling they got from her, we will never know because the media will never be honest about it and the polls will continue to lie and people on our side will keep panicking or fake panicking over pro-life views upsetting the Karens.

I am telling you that there is one thing that upsets normal women more than pro-life views and that is the demented refusal of a woman to protect fully grown babies. How Democrats continue to get away with being the heroes on this issue, only God knows.

429 Did some engine shuffling today. Dead (well, knocking at Death's door) engine from Suburban hoisted up, some parts removed that will be transferred to its replacement, then set on ground, and hoist pushed aside. Picked it up with the tractor, and set it upright in an old wheel rim out of the way, but accessible. Still some parts want to be removed.

Replacement engine, on a wheeled stand, rolled outside, and washed more or less thoroughly with gasoline to degrease it. Will slap on a little black paint, because I can, and then bolt on the accessories removed from the dead one.

When the Sun was out, it was tolerably warm. When the Sun went behind a cloud, the breeze was chilly. I'm glad I was able to wear gloves for most of this.

I guess I was slightly off, CA prop 7 apparently only allowed the legislature to make a change and didn't change state law itself. And our elected retards are split between permanent standard time and permanent DST and therefore accomplishing nothing.

If it had just made CA switch to standard time it would've been over and done with since that's allowed under the act. All of the permanent DST shenanigans would require the act to be amended.

And that means no more Woke Oppression, with threats of destroying people's lives professionally and societally because they do not want to think like you. No more trying to control what other people think and feel. No more deciding someone is a heinous person just because they want to discus alternatives to a woke position.

A lot of people have forgotten that we went to permanent DST in the early '70s under Tricky Dick, as part of some energy savings nonsense due to the energy crisis.

A majority of the population was for it. Then came winter and around the solstice sunrise came very late relative to the clock time in the western most reaches of some time zones. Support cratered and it was repealed. Didn't last a year.

I expect the same thing would happen again.

The Michigan upper peninsula is about the worst (Alaska is pretty bad too, the whole state, should be one time zone to the west). In some places there, sunrise would be about 9:40AM at latest sunrise time.

They frame it in terms of medical emergencies, and everyone let's them get away with it.
There is not a hospital in this world, including Catholic ones, who would choose the unborn baby over the mother in a life or death emergency. None.
Nor do they look at a pregnant women and decide, hey, ya know what, this would be a great time to perform an abortion! Let's take this woman who's heart is barely beating, or is hemorrhaging profusely, or who's blood pressure is plummeting, and let's take time to prep her for surgery, then start vigorously scraping one of her internal organs, using up precious minutes because it takes time to carve an 8 month old fetus up into small pieces, all while making her bleed even more profusely .

Protesters gather at Massachusetts State House in support of Donald Trump's plan to deport illegal immigrants

Ted Wayman
Reporter

BOSTON —
A group of protesters gathered in front of the Massachusetts State House on Sunday in support of President-elect Donald Trump's plan to deport illegal immigrants.

The protest was also organized to criticize Gov. Maura Healey following a comment she made last week when she said the Massachusetts State Police would not be used to assist the Trump administration in deporting illegal immigrants.

Protesters said they also came in celebration of Trump's victory in the 2024 presidential election, as well as the high number of votes he received in Massachusetts, a blue state.

Trump's plans to stop illegal immigration are one of the primary reasons protesters said they voted for the former president in this election.

"We want the border closed," a protester shouted through a megaphone...

They still do, sort of in many places. Big Retail, Big Leisure, Big Golf like DST because it gives more light after quitting time to do business.

In Winter, Big box stores around here have 6AM - 9PM hours. Come summer (not after the DST change in March, but went the days start to get longer), they'll move to 6AM - 10PM, or even 10:30PM.

Relative to Standard time, they're just opening an hour earlier, and closing about the same time as they do in winter. They are roughly following the sun.

Back in the old days, before railroads (and telegraphs) time was an entirely local thing. You set your clock/watch to noon when the sun was overhead and that was that (if you knew the Equation of Time you could correct to local mean time, but that was too important for the average person. (Damned important for navigators and astronomers, though).

You couldn't travel fast enough or even communicate fast enough for it to make any difference.

Then the railroads came, and they were accidents due to clocks not being synchronized. I remember reading about one where 14 people were killed when one train slammed into the back of another. Their clocks were off, being synced to different local times and neither thought the other was anywhere near.

That was just tragically stupid, and they realized how important clock synchronization was. "Railroad time" was born. That evolved.

And in the US (the notion of standard, synchronized clocks was done in England a bit before we did it here, and there was coordination, with GMT being the prime meridian).

And this was done without federal law at all. The states all just did it on their own, with the railroads pushing it (such was the economic power of the railroads). It was codified into federal law years later, but that just rubber stampled what the states had already done.

Nov 18th, 1883 was the date when the time zone system went into effect in the US. It was known as the Day with Two Noons.

NYC is about 1 degree east of 75W, so it was east of EST. The synching of all clocks was mandated to happen at noon (per standard time). So NYC had two noons that day.

If you were west of the central meridian, your clock just jumped foward, but east, clocks jumped backward.

The crater was too deep to drive out of. Somehow it became enclosed by someone's garage, with a clear garage door, and I had to wait until the owner and his family showed up to open the garage door. I was starting to drive out, resolving to find a new route home tomorrow, when I woke up.

491 And, I'm remembering, some of them will actually open up even earlier than 6AM during the heat of summer. Days are long, and with the heat of the afternoon, a lot of the crews like to get out early and knock off early. Lowe's here in Simpsonville has opened at 5AM to take advantage of some of that business.

I wish more stores here would open at 6 or even 7. By 9 am this hellish area is an oven between April and November, and getting your errands done early and retreating to the A/C is basic survival. If Walmart would open at 6 like they used to (and have at least one checkout line staffed), and if Aldi would follow suit at 7, I'd be set.

I'm almost giving up on the schadenfreude videos because they're so full of delusion it's pointless. Really, they are seeing things in fun-house mirror___, everything flipped backwards and up-side-down and rippled.

Very well! I was afraid before the election that I was stuck in my silly job, but now I feel confident there's another vine to grab. The company I work for is a manufacturer/importer and it will probably be affected by Trump's tariffs (please God) AND the 15% ceiling on corporate income taxes (please please God). Mathematically interesting times we live in, nein?

497 I haven't personally seen any of the anti-Trump cray-cray around me here. Just what's posted online -- and that's been more than enough. When I got to work on Wed. last week, there were no ructions on my campus, no protests -- whereas I think there had been some in Nov. 2016. Nothing violent, just noisy and annoying. And certainly nothing like the pro-Pali stuff that caused traffic blockages last May.

Shot in the dark and also could always apply to almost anyone.... however all I wonder upon reading is if you have been particularly thinking about or missing someone who has passed on. The clear garage door is what has me, almost like a view to the "other side".

500 Hiya, Blonde Morticia!

Yeah, payback is a sweet dream. Not counting on it, though.

You want: Total Payback
You'd settle for: a few heads on platters
You'll get: (hopefully) a properly functioning country, for a couple of years

Yes! If DJT manages to cut or eliminate SS taxes, that will be a huge thing for me -- I'm receiving it now even though I'm still slogging to work every day, and 85% of it being taxable is annoying. If none of it is in '25, and I retire soon, only my pension will be taxable, and that's much smaller. Plus, of course, anything I earn working part-time or online.

No, ellipsis, I'm not aware of that. My mother passed on in '86, and though I miss her, I haven't been thinking about her in particular. You have a good point, though.

503 Need to see if it's raining, or likely to be in the next hour, so I can work out without getting soaked. I hate the feeling of rain trickling into my eyes.

Or just mortality in general. But again that's something that plagues a lot of us. That's all I can see in it other than general anxiety, and usually I have a good bead on dreams.

505 Like you went deep in the ground, buried. And there's this clear door and a wait for someone to open it. Very "death".
