We got a bit of gusty wind & hard rain yesterday. Of course it was *nothing* compared to what Helene is dishing!
The tree branches were whipping furiously, and dust got so thick, couldn't see across the valley. (Lots of ranch & crop land nearby) Then came the rain. BIG drops and lots of 'em. Stayed windy until almost midnight. Now? All is calm. Slightly damp. Just a reminder that Winter is coming. Posted by: JQ at September 26, 2024 04:22 AM (njWTi) 11

Wolfus Aurelius, you asked about a week ago what kind of new car I purchased and and I never got back to you with a reply. I bought a 2024 Toyota RAV4 TRD. So far it's been a lovely car and in a few hours I'm headed off to Arizona to the Apache Trail road. It's been closed for some time due to landslides and it recently reopened. It runs through the salt River canyon. It should be pretty spectacular.

Caroline Ellison, Sam Bankman-Fried's right-hand woman in the FTX kerfuffle, has been sentenced to two years in prison for her part in the fuffling and ordered to pay $11 billion in restitution. (Ars Technica) Her fine went to eleven ... that's one greater than ten, so her fine was tougher. "This Is Spinal Tap" justice is cruel, but fair! I haven't stuck my nose outside yet, but no doubt we still have the same unbreathable hot sticky miasma that's been enveloping us since March. The weather mavens promise that once the hurricane passes our latitude, maybe this afternoon or evening, we will get drier northern winds and the drier conditions will last for 2-3 days. That'd be nice . . . if it happens.
If it is dry, this weekend I'll polish and re-wax the hood of my car -- it looks fairly glossy, but it has some water spotting. Last Sat. I tackled the trunk with rubbing compound, another product that is supposed to dissolve acid deposits, and finally a coat of Collinite wax; and it does look better. Now to do the hood and roof. The doors and fenders all look great, but the sun and rain can do some numbers on the horizontal surfaces of any car. TRD stands for Toyota Racing Development. Toyota slaps that on certain models that have been tuned by that group. In the case of the RAV4, which is hardly a beastly machine, it's received a tweaked suspension, a far more robust all-wheel drive system, a skid plate of all things, an interior upgrade, and some some slightly different branding on the exterior. I seem to have stumbled on a cure for male pattern baldness. My mom and g'ma were both half bald when they died. I've been headed down the same road for a few years now, reaching the point where there was more scalp visible than hair. Recently that has not only stopped but now I have a head of thick hair with more body than ever. I can't believe the difference.
When I realized what was happening I had to know why. It took two weeks before I made the connection to a nasty virus I caught this February. I had vanquished that beast with bone broth. Lots of bone broth. Three cups of bone broth a day. I did this for six weeks, tapering off by April. This is the only thing I have done differently (and faithfully). It has to be what caused my hair to grow. And as a bonus, my fingernails are growing almost faster than I can file them and they've stopped breaking, cracking and peeling. I know I sound like a snake oil salesman but this works, I swear. Posted by: creeper at September 26, 2024 05:04 AM (M6moH) 36

I took a hard look at the 4Runners as that would have been the no compromise vehicle. However, after much consideration I opted for the RAV cuz I've reached an age where my days of crashing around out in the woods are pretty much over, I'm more of a light duty off-roading person these days and that's just fine. Then there was the expense of running the 4Runner versus the RAV 4. Currently I'm getting between 30 to 33 mpg on the highway vs. 20 mpg for the 4Runner. I expect to keep this vehicle for at least a decade. That should get me well past the New Mexico communist EV mandates which kick in in 2026. 43% of all new vehicles sold here are supposed to be EVs in 2026. I think that ramps up to 100% by 2032. It's complete madness and is going to completely foul up the automobile market here. I bought this car a few years earlier than I wanted too has a hedge against all this craziness. JQ, I devised a recipe that's quick and good. Bone broth powder comes from an outfit called Zammex, easily available online. Recipe as follows:
1 Knorr tomato bouillon cube 1/4 tsp honey 2 drops hot sauce 1 tsp butter 1 scoop bone broth powder Drop bouillon cube into a large cup. Add honey and hot sauce. Fill cup with boiling water, stir till dissolved and add butter to cup, allowing it to melt. Now pour one scoop of bone broth powder over butter and stir till dissolved. You're good to go. fluoroantimonic acid In my younger days while doing research for my Ph.D., our lab used sodium cacodylate, the salt of cacodylic acid, (CH3)2AsO2H. As I recall, it was integral to the operation of ion exchange columns than we ran to purify modified di- and tri- oligonucleotides for further study. That it was a potent herbicide was probably why it was used -- one didn't want li'l buggies setting up housekeeping in the polymeric beads used to create the ion exchange columns. For a time, I was trying to acquire a chloroacetaldehyde modification of the adenine base which fluorescent and therefore amenable to our studies. I became a slave to the ion exchange purification process. After over one year of work and with no evident path to progress in sight, my research director and I redirected my work toward a more promising line of inquiry that eventually led to my thesis. Anyway, cacodylic acid came into being in the Nineteenth Century, that halcyon time when chemists were wont to smell or even taste things that they made. No less a scientist than Robert Bunson (yes, that Robert Bunson) wrote of the cacodyls: "The smell of this body produces instantaneous tingling of the hands and feet, and even giddiness and insensibility... It is remarkable that when one is exposed to the smell of these compounds the tongue becomes covered with a black coating, even when no further evil effects are noticeable". That sounded lovely, Bob. Do keep those "cacodyls" away from me, please. Posted by: Krebs v Carnot: Epic Battle of the Cycling Stars (TM) at September 26, 2024 05:47 AM (xG4kz) 76

73 Oh, Ciampino, that's sad... Both my previous cats died of kidney failure. It was like that for one-- just soaked with urine & laying in a corner of the bathroom. Ugh. :'(
Posted by: JQ at September 26, 2024 05:45 AM (njWTi) ---- Baby, one of the four cats we brought from South Africa, and so named as we got Mom and Baby together from the kill shelter, had to be euthanized after we found her in the bathroom laying in a pool of 'water'. It didn't even smell. The most lovable cat we've ever had - sweet temperament, loved music, would rush over for a lap the moment she saw the grooming brush, loved human food particularly bolognese meat sauce, curry and other spicy hot stuff. Loudest purr and a raucous mew. I'll post now as it has gotten dusty in here in spite of all the moisture. She can sit in the lobby of my building, then go wander around the neighborhood (or go to the zoo on her pass) for a good part of the day. We may be able to leave at four. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at September 26, 2024 06:13 AM (omVj0) 96

Ciampino, JQ, I lost my big black longhair Wolf in late '21 to what probably was kidney failure. He'd always been the iron cat for the ten years he'd lived with me, hardly ever sick. Then he began to have urine troubles like you describe. Chekov the Siberian was going through his issues at the same time, and so at first I didn't notice Wolf's problem. I was going to bring him to the vet the very next day . . . and he passed away quietly in the kitchen on Saturday afternoon while I was napping.
It happened fast, and I know there is very little that you can do about such failure once it crops up (right?). But I wish I could have been with him. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at September 26, 2024 06:18 AM (omVj0) 98

A couple of items I forgot about Baby. She was 15 when she traversed the Rainbow Bridge. Friendly to a fault. If someone knocked on the front door, all the cats would scatter and hide except Baby who would be at that door, ready to greet whoever. Outside, people such as the postman, and other delivery people would stop to give her scritches and comment to us about her. These days I wouldn't like to have strangers, outside, go near my pets, specially Haitians, though. Posted by: Ciampino - Used to confuse Haiti & Tahiti at September 26, 2024 06:24 AM (qfLjt) 110

Adding water to concentrated acids can lead to a violent reaction as there's a considerable heat of hydration. What splatters is mostly acid. My Ph.D. supervisor, a very tall, blonde, Teutonic man (actually was of German stock) when he was doing his Ph.D., needed a lot of 1,2-dithioethane - HSCH2CH2SH. This is like glycol used in brake fluid, as engine coolant and antifreeze/de-icer, but with two SH groups instead of OH. This is EXTREMELY stinky stuff. At the time it wasn't readily available and expensive so his supervisor had him make it. For a couple of weeks he was avoided everywhere as he couldn't get rid of that smell on skin and clothes - bleach will do it but do you want to bleach your blue shirt and your hair?

Eye over warm water equals stronger storm. But unsurvivable is a bit over the top. Posted by: NaCly Dog at September 26, 2024 06:38 AM A while back I was thinking of purchasing coastal NC to FL and did a lot of research. Apparently the storm surge is going to be the very worst where the eye of the storm passes directly overhead. Maybe a 10 mile stretch of land. Predicting beforehand exactly where that is going to be is tough. So they trot out the 'abundance of caution' merit badge and scare the hell out of people. My family once owned coastal real estate on a lagoon about three miles inland. Ground floor was probably six feet above the water. In Hurricane Sandy those homes had knee deep water in them. The eye passed about 10 miles south. A lot of those homes ended up condemned and could have been purchased dirt cheap afterwards. I shoulda, coulda, woulda.
