@251 { previous thread }/Erebus: It's been ... quite a number of years since I lost my grandparents, and they were a huge positive influence in my life. I regularly tell stories of things I saw when they were alive, of the good things they did for me, and what I learned from them, and how that benefits me even today. I still miss them, and this doesn't fill the hole of them being gone, but it helps some.
Keep your mother's memory alive for yourself and others in the same way. And I'm so glad to hear she was a great mother to you.
My mom's still alive, and we live in the same town so I get to visit with her pretty often, and we talk on the phone for half an hour to an hour every couple of days. She's getting pretty up there in years, and I'm doing more and more for her, while she still tries to do things for me (Moms, ya can't stop 'em from helping when they want to, right?) :-)
Everyone: Call your mother. Tell her you love her even if you haven't said that in a while. Enjoy time with her while they're here, and while you can. This is the time to do so.

My whole thing throughout all of this is that Israel would be substantially better off if they could break away from U.S. influence and interference.

If you ever want to go down the rabbit hole... and I mean all the way down, there's a yootoob channel called "Jamie Dlux."
Jamie is very unpolished, but he does his homework. Pretty much any conspiracy you want to explore, he's done it, but he was kicked off all the platforms until recently, and many of his videos have been disappeared. I know he's done Puff Daddy stories before, but I just checked, and don't see any. A lot of stuff on his channel is re-uploaded from the past few years.
I'm not recommending anyone go down this hole. I have, and there are things I wish I didn't know.

Of course in the last week there has been an incredibly rapid increase in the margin of Israel's dominance. Tonight IAF aircraft loiter above both Beirut and the Bekaa Valley, ready to pounce on any systems being readied for launch (most of the most worrisome systems they have are not simply ready to go, and the prep for launch of course is something Israel has worked on ID'ing for years).
Israel announced no air resupply via Beirut airport will be allowed. This, as they systematically take out elaborate coastal missile arrays hidden (well, not so hidden I guess) under civilian buildings in south Beirut. This is about as total a control of the initiative as you can get in these circumstances.

I would blame us because we had a poorly thought out idea and stuck to it re: Iraq.
On the other hand, one could argue that the decapitation of Libya is what some of us argued we SHOULD have done with regards to Iraq- and that did not work out great either.
ALL of this is always Monday morning quarterbacking. BUT, we should acknowledge our failures and use it to do better the next time- and there is always a next time. It may be that there IS no good solution, just the least bad.

Israel is talking about taking control of the area south of the Litani River, roughly the southern 40 km of Lebanon. This is Hezbollahs stronghold, and does NOT include Beirut. This also was supposed to be demilitarized under a 2006 UN resolution, which Hezbollah has ignored.

Lebanon's more complicated but that has positive potential - i.e. the plurality of actual or potential power players might create a situation where Israeli dismantling of Hezb military power leads to the other communities reasserting themselves, preventing a return to status quo ante.
De-militarization up to the Litani has to be the minimum goal, I would think. If re-establishment of the long-range missile threat can be prevented, Israel will have an imperfect but tolerable situation.

As Tom Servo points out, there's even a handy UN Resolution (1701) that has never been implemented, demilitarizing the south. Israel will just be enforcing a slightly amended version, in a way.

I believe the buffer zone is the goal, along with the decimation of as much of Hezbollah. A city the size of Beirut would swallow most of the IDF and urban war is, as we have seen, brutal. And slow. And the slower it goes, the more outside nations (UN) will try to interfere.

There is a fascinating map on X somewhere which shows which groups control which sections of Lebanon, and in Beirut it is a neighborhood by neighborhood thing. As I wrote up thread, Israel has no need to go into Druze or Maronite areas, and I suspect that rather than go into Beirut itself, they’ll just bomb the hell out of the Hezbollah areas. (While taking control of the south)

The Bekaa Valley is another major Shi'a area, and has been a center of IRGC activity since the civil war. Israel has been paying aerial visits to military targets there, and that may be a regular thing for the foreseeable future.

Two Harris/Walz signs have appeared on my road in the last week. I am acquainted with the posters of both, and can state with some assurance that they might just as well have the above slogan instead of the candidate symbols.
There's a sign-war going on with one of them. Every time she adds another local Dem candidate, her new neighbor puts up a more outrageous Trump slogan. "I'm voting for the convicted felon" has her scratching a bald spot on her head. She does not get it.

Israel has been so successful at taking out Hezbollah’s command level that it may come to an end faster than any of us thought possible. I think there is no way that Hezbollah, or the Iranians that are there, can now offer any kind of organized resistance. There will be fighters with weapons of course, but none of them will be able to maintain contact with each other.
