Interesting:
Moran was married to Scottish born Mary Nimmo Moran (1842–1899), an etcher and landscape painter. The couple had two daughters and a son. His brothers Edward (1829–1901), John (1831-1902) and Peter (1841–1914), as well as his nephews Edward Percy Moran (1862–1935) and Jean Leon Gerome Ferris (1863–1930) were also active as artists. His brother John was also a pioneer in artistic photography. The two often worked side by side, John photographing the same scene that Thomas was painting. More:
Thomas Moran's vision of the Western landscape was critical to the creation of Yellowstone National Park. In 1871 Dr. Ferdinand Hayden, director of the United States Geological Survey, invited Moran, at the request of American financier Jay Cooke, to join Hayden and his expedition team into the unknown Yellowstone region. Hayden was just about to embark on his arduous journey when he received a letter from Cooke presenting Moran as "an artist of Philadelphia of rare genius". Funded by Cooke (the director of the Northern Pacific Railroad), and Scribner's Monthly, a new illustrated magazine, Moran agreed to join the survey team of the Hayden Geological Survey of 1871 in their exploration of the Yellowstone region. During forty days in the wilderness area, Moran visually documented over 30 different sites and produced a diary of the expedition's progress and daily activities. His sketches, along with photographs produced by survey member William Henry Jackson, captured the nation's attention and helped inspire Congress to establish the Yellowstone region as the first national park in 1872. . . Posted by: Madamemayhem (uppity wench) at September 25, 2024 09:52 AM (4XwPj) ++++ This is, sadly, a real phenomenon. I know a guy who hates poultry, especially chicken. He got tired of people getting downright angry and mean about it, so he says he has a poultry allergy and can't eat chicken. I have no idea why this happens, but it does happen. If you dislike something that is a staple or a generally-accepted delicacy, it can raise a lot of ire for some reason. Easier to lie about it and say you're allergic. Moran and the Hudson River School of art is always a pleasure. His ability to capture the beauty and grandeur of the American landscape is only matched by John Constable. The golden sky of a new morning also reflected in the water which dominates the image is countered by the massif of the Devil's Tower with its dark, forboding colors. The cloud in front and the lower hills adds to the sense of the Tower's 'intrusion' into the landscape. Even the powerful rocks and trees in the foreground, not insignificant in themselves, add to the sense of huge mountain. I love the subtle blending of colors in the sky and on the hills in the rear. It delivers on the Hudson River School aim of celebrating the American, not European, landscape.

Posted by: RedMindBlueState at September 25, 2024 10:08 AM (ZANHd) ++++ LOL! For some people, getting messy is part of the experience. I don't get it. I endeavor to remain tidy while eating. I once went out for wings with a coworker and for him, hot wings were like a full-body experience. Wore his napkin as a bib, rolled up his sleeves, and went whole-hog on the wings, messy from fingertip to forearm and nose to neck. It was kind of fascinating to see. I'd dined with him before - and did since - and he was tidy and proper in all things except hot wings. The appalling table manners and practices were limited to that *one* thing, as near as I can tell. Eating Maryland style steamed crabs is not really about getting full, it's more of a social event. Think of it like a tailgating event. It's as much about the experience of being together as it is about enjoying what you're eating. Having lived in central MD my whole life, I can remember many a crab feast and the memories of those times are priceless.
Posted by: Doof As a Midwestern kid, visiting my dad's family in Maryland and having a giant outdoor steamed crab event was odd. It's tasty, but a ton of work, slow and tedious. Tailgating seems like a good analogy, but it's off...probably because your fingers and face don't get as gross? Tailgating, people sit in comfy chairs, get up and play bags, while crab eating is just....crab eating, with occasional chatter. May as well do the rural Midwestern thing of a family style potluck, followed by casual cards games like whist and pitch. Posted by: Moron Analyst at September 25, 2024 10:13 AM (JCZqz) 286

Language update:
I have kept to doing at least 1 lesson per language (German, French, and Italian) everyday since I bought the year of Babbel. German just...doesn't make sense. Maybe it will later when it's less learn phrases by rote to get a grounding and more "let's conjugate the shit out of some verbs" territory. French, Babbel doesn't like how I pronounce things. It's hard to form, but my high school knowledge is providing me with a solid grounding for the vocab and grammar. Italian, I went from learning the intricacies of how to form "of" with different nouns and listening to numbers which I struggled with to doing verb tenses I already knew (past and present progressive). I suddenly was blowing through entire lessons without errors. Felt good. Posted by: TheJamesMadison, going full throttle with Tony Scott at September 25, 2024 10:22 AM (GBKbO) 333

Former CIA Director and Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has accused Israel of committing an act of terrorism by rigging walkie-talkies and pagers that exploded in a coordinated attack last week.
Panetta: “I don’t think there’s any question that it’s a form of terrorism. This has gone right into the supply chain. Right into the supply chain. And when you have terror going into the supply chain, it makes people ask the question: What the hell is next?” It's the same principle that outlaws boobytrapping toys and other everyday objects, causing items to explode without knowing specifically who they will kill. That's a form of terrorism, which Israel had previously acknowledged. When a former CIA Director/Sec'y of Defense calls it an act of terror, it's an act of terror. by agent of an ally of the US at that. Who ever thought that up and carried it out clearly were not thinking logically. Now try putting the expanded war back in the bottle. The pagers prepared the battlefield for pre-emptive war. Multiple Israelis state this is a war of aggression, not self-defense. Israel is hurting the USA and the Democratic Party. Back in the 90s, I was having dinner at a brewery in Denver and went with the elk loin that was a special that night. Cute, perky little waitress asked me how I wanted it cooked. I thought a beat and said, "I don't know what sound elks make in the wild, but when I put my fork in it I want it to make that sound." She looked confused for a second, then smiled and said "rare it is!" She got a good tip.

MP4, I shared yesterday that both Michael Cohen and Mitt Romney fear "retribution," should Trump win. Cohen is even going to flee overseas and change his name. Someone mentioned maybe it's a psyop to make Trump look unhinged and scary. I think they know just how deep the treason goes and know they have every right to be scared.
