If this painting were prose...
The sea was angry that day, my friends. A calm September morning at sea, surrounded by friends, a cool Autumn breeze and the memories of a life well-lived enveloped us like a dream. We carried a steady 12 knots as dolphins played off our bow, and the mesmerizing rhythm of the swells kept us in tune. But what is that on the horizon? Dark clouds rising up like a nightmare. Then a bunch of other stuff happened. The end. Posted by: red speck at September 23, 2024 09:40 AM (0Id0S) 63

I love Constable landscapes and portraits but this one took me by surprise. It is so different from his usual style. I wonder if this was intended as a quick study that was never finished since it appears to be mostly just blocked out. Or perhaps he tried to capture a feel of the scene before the downpour got to him. Can't say I like it compared to his usual masterpieces but it does convey a feeling of an approaching storm.

Friend of mine got an Earl Scheib job on his Jeep. Dropped it off in the crude camo job it had been sporting and just wanted it to be one color; he picked yellow. When he went to pick it up, most of the car looked better than he'd expected, until he noticed these big, crusty lumps behind the wheel wells. He did a quick investigative poke at the hardened clusters, only to have them fall to the ground. Turns out that *washing* the Jeep was not covered in the $59 price tag, so they simply painted over the mud clods and dirt.

I mentioned how different this is from Constable's usual style. Looking through the Wiki page I saw one he did of Stonehenge in a similar way. I've read that Constable sort of began the plein air way of painting but usually finished them in the studio. Today's choice and the Stonehenge painting may be a complete plein air effort with no studio time. That gives a more complete view of his artistic vision and versatility.

Posted by: spindrift at September 23, 2024 1 *** Yeah, the techno-babble got bad sometimes. But many of the scripts overall were so much more mature than the TOS stories. With the exception of "city on the Edge of Forever," almost every TOS script ended happily or with a hopeful outlook. That's good, don't get me wrong. But sometimes you need a more downbeat ending. The TNG stories in which the alien scientist decides to follow his custom and go home to die at a certain age, and the one with the "neutral gender race" where one who leans female has a secret affair with Riker . . . good stuff. Stewart got to deliver a lot of good ones. The "Darmok" story, for one. His taking over the helm in the "Booby Trap" story: "You have done your job, Mr. LaForge, and now I must do mine."
And in the Season Two story in which a centuries-old alien tech has infested the ship's computer, and Picard leads the Away Team, where they find a super-transporter. He sets the alien reactors to blow and steps through the device onto the bridge of the Romulan ship which is also trapped. Romulan Commander: "You will die with us!" There series used large model of Enterprise is on display at the Smithsonian.
The "lost" one is a smaller model that was made in the very early days of the show's gestation. Though it was used several times in the show. After the series wrapped it was mounted for display and given to Roddenberry. During the prelims for Phase II it was apparently loaned out and never returned. Roddenberry made a stink about it. So lost. Fast forward almost 50 years and out of a storage unit to hit auction is this model. And AFAIK the Roddenberry Estate, the auction house, and the seller are still mired in a legal controversy over ownership. Posted by: Anna Puma at September 23, 2024 10:26 AM (Gy/o9) 238

2024 results IF polling errors favor Harris like they favored Trump in 2020 show Harris winning a 340+ EV landslide, assuming the 538 polling overstates Trump support by as much as polling aggregates did to Biden in 2020
The opposite would seem to be more likely to be true? If Biden's support was overstated by the polls in 2020 (and it often was), it would seem that Harris's support is more likely to be overstated than Trump's. It's less likely to be that way this year because of those reasons -particularly the changes in campaign GOTV efforts. Also enthusiasm gaps... Trump had a major advantage in 2020 with voter enthusiasm. Democrats hold the largest voter enthusiasm since 2008. Trump maxxed out his support in 2020, surpassing 2016, but he can't pull that trick again. He's shedding support rather than adding it. The polls are under-counting Harris supporters this time, while pollsters try to adjust to account for those 'hidden Trump voters' of 2016 and 2020 by inflating the presumed 'Trump vote'. Pollsters will dramatically underestimate support for the Democratic ticket. Posted by: Intercepted DU Transmissions brought by the Intrepid AoS Liaison at September 23, 2024 10:41 AM (JCZqz) 293

307 The polls are over counting Harris support
Posted by: It's me donna at September 23, 2024 10:43 AM (IyPmt) ======== They may be getting Harris just right, but if there's a pattern to point out, especially in national polls, over the past few years it's that they always, always, always undercount Trump's support. To see that history and say, "This benefits Harris now because reasons," is just idiotic wishcasting.
