67 I love Constable landscapes and portraits but this one took me by surprise. It is so different from his usual style. I wonder if this was intended as a quick study that was never finished since it appears to be mostly just blocked out. Or perhaps he tried to capture a feel of the scene before the downpour got to him. Can't say I like it compared to his usual masterpieces but it does convey a feeling of an approaching storm.

A friend of mine took a look at a Star Trek Next Generation episode script one time. He said it had little annotations to "insert techy-sounding term here". Which makes a lot of sense given the nonsense they were spewing.

118 Friend of mine got an Earl Scheib job on his Jeep. Dropped it off in the crude camo job it had been sporting and just wanted it to be one color; he picked yellow. When he went to pick it up, most of the car looked better than he'd expected, until he noticed these big, crusty lumps behind the wheel wells. He did a quick investigative poke at the hardened clusters, only to have them fall to the ground. When he went to pick it up, most of the car looked better than he'd expected, until he noticed these big, crusty lumps behind the wheel wells. He did a quick investigative poke at the hardened clusters, only to have them fall to the ground. Turns out that *washing* the Jeep was not covered in the $59 price tag, so they simply painted over the mud clods and dirt.

160 I mentioned how different this is from Constable's usual style. Looking through the Wiki page I saw one he did of Stonehenge in a similar way. I've read that Constable sort of began the plein air way of painting but usually finished them in the studio. Today's choice and the Stonehenge painting may be a complete plein air effort with no studio time. That gives a more complete view of his artistic vision and versatility.

Yeah, the techno-babble got bad sometimes. But many of the scripts overall were so much more mature than the TOS stories. With the exception of "city on the Edge of Forever," almost every TOS script ended happily or with a hopeful outlook. That's good, don't get me wrong. But sometimes you need a more downbeat ending. The TNG stories in which the alien scientist decides to follow his custom and go home to die at a certain age, and the one with the "neutral gender race" where one who leans female has a secret affair with Riker . . . good stuff.

Still, it is a sad ending. Edith Keeler does lose her life, and Kirk has to make sure it happens (and does). The puzzle-box storytelling way would have been to set it up that Kirk has to *save* Edith, thus rescuing the future, then leave her to return to his century. Despite all its problems, I always kinda liked Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. Exploration and discovery, weird aliens, a lot of introspection on the characters in an excellent scene showing them confronting their past. Too bad the execution and details bringing to story concept to film was a train wreck.

The "lost" one is a smaller model that was made in the very early days of the show's gestation. Though it was used several times in the show. After the series wrapped it was mounted for display and given to Roddenberry.

During the prelims for Phase II it was apparently loaned out and never returned. Roddenberry made a stink about it. So lost.

Fast forward almost 50 years and out of a storage unit to hit auction is this model. And AFAIK the Roddenberry Estate, the auction house, and the seller are still mired in a legal controversy over ownership.

The thing about polling is...no one has answered me what incentive any of them have to being right.

Especially not their polls that aren't the final polls.

Hell, Quinnipac has had giant, massive misses regularly in their final polls over the past few years, and people still cling to their earlier polls every cycle like they're gold. What possible incentive does Quinnipac have to get it right when even after they get it massively wrong, people like 538 still treat them with respect?
