I so much enjoy a fried egg sandwich.
But with cutting down on carbs, I have had two pieces of bread in the last three months. And a good fried egg sandwich has to be done up on toasted white bread. Cheap white bread. I am not so fond of much of modern software development. Stand ups, sprints, grinding Jira tickets, devops, and on-call rotations are not what I originally signed up for. "Why is a pretty normal game so demanding? Nobody knows."
But I'll take a guess... We used to write tight, efficient code because we had very little processing power, memory, and storage to work with (relative to today, it was minuscule.) Rapid technology advancements brought more of the three resources programmers needed, as well as code optimization taking place in the compiler, and it was "good enough". Programmers stopped hand-optimizing code because it wasn't necessary anymore. Management got used to programmers not having to spend time on that task, and so filled their schedules with creating more code (fair play.) But the hand-optimization skill was mostly lost to time as a result. The machines, doing more for us, make us less intelligent. And the same sort of thing might be happening with graphics and GPUs. "Oh, the card will do it for me..." Anyhow, the night of Hugo we were underway and returning from a deployment to the Med.
The next morning by radio reports we knew it was bad, and pulled into Bermuda to fly some of the married members of the crew back to try to help families at home. The ship got back several days later, and as soon as the Coast Guard had certified that the shipping channel was clear and the navigation aids were in their proper locations we pulled into the Navy Base. It was a very surreal experience for several months afterward. Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at September 22, 2024 05:07 AM (a1415) 46
From the 80:20 developers article (BTW, the 20% developers who are Day Drinkers are a hard core base for voting for Red Kammie, a hard core Day Drinker herself) -- According to the new Stack Overflow survey showed that majority of developers hate their jobs. Anecdotally, both plumbers and farmers are happier than them. I posit this. In a world defined by cycles -- check my nickname, for example -- there is a Shit Cycle. In the Shit Cycle, shit becomes and shit unbecomes, and all in a cycle. Farmers are the unbecoming side by converting shit into food. Plumbers are the becoming side by conveying produced shit to the shit converters. Now, why are developers less satisfied about their jobs than farmers and plumbers? I posit that it is because they do not know where they fit into the Shit Cycle. They do not know their calling, as it were. So, here's my 5:00 AM, just woke up advice to developers: CHOOSE A SIDE -- Shit Becoming or Shit Unbecoming! Make shit, or dispose of shit! Now get back to your keyboards -- break time is over. Good night to you all. Posted by: Krebs v Carnot: Epic Battle of the Cycling Stars (TM) at September 22, 2024 05:08 AM (xG4kz) 47

How to run your own generative AI instances on your own computer. (Nature)
Still useless - this is a how article, not a why article - but at least it doesn't steal all your data and sell it to the lowest bidder. - The big question from users will always be "which one of these is without guardrails", because asking inconvenient questions about things like abortion and rape in relation to particular demographics is icky and you shouldn't do it, citizen. Also regarding programming: With my first and last jobs in the field, about six years apart, I actually was excited a lot of the time to get to work and continue what I'd been doing.
I carried my skills over to my office manager job in '02, using MS Access to build a mini-database. Tables with data, screens for entering and editing that data, and reports using it. I had one report which sorted and grouped the data for it on Group A, and a companion report which sorted and grouped it on Group B, without changing the data at all. Lots of fun. I haven't kept up with that in my current job (2018 - present) because there is much less need for it. And everyone I work with, including my successor, uses Excel for everything; they look blankly at me when I mention Access. Also, I stopped caring about my work during the Sniffle Scare and just want to retire. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at September 22, 2024 06:27 AM (omVj0) 79

What will get us in the end is the political bias of the programmers, same as always. A week or so ago the answer to "who won the harris trump debate" was something like
"As of September 2024 there has not been a debate between Harris and Trump, but this information could change with an update" now the answer to the same question is "The Harris-Trump debate, held during the 2020 vice presidential campaign, is often viewed differently depending on individual perspectives and political affiliations. Many commentators noted that Kamala Harris effectively challenged Mike Pence on various issues..." That sure seems like it's been updated, doesn't it? Posted by: The World Wonders - That was one of the most sobering moments of the last few years, and we've had a bunch. Heck, we saw an actual coup in 2020. Biden said he was done, he was no longer president, and no one cared. No one in the military, no one in Congress, no one in any federal position cared at all. Couldn't care less, honestly. Because the POTUS doesn't run anything. It couldn't have been made more clear than when they removed Biden without any action or interest to physically remove him. Everyone is comfortable with it because nothing changed. That's part of why they hate Trump and view him as so dangerous. He thinks the POTUS is a position of responsibility and accountability that can be used by the elected individual to accomplish the desires of the voters. Or when SCOTUS dismantles any part of the Administrative State. The Administrative branch is the only "legitimate" branch now, in terms of any offense or opposition to it is an expression of attacking our Precious Democracy™ Democracy is understood to mean, the autocratic rule of credentialed experts and oligarch stakeholders. Headline: "Zimbabwe to cull 200 elephants to feed people left hungry by drought" That headline is almost word for word identical across CNN/ABC/NBC/Reuters et al. So why are we reading this article that clearly was injected into the news cycle by the globalist manipulator of opinion? Not that there are any recipes that include elephant meat, but its so that childless cat-ladies will demand that "something to be done to save the elephants" (rather than hungry humans) which always means millions of dollars from the multi-trillion dollar slush fund to beef-up Zimbabwe drained treasury. The pertinent ad-blocking related Add-ons are: 1) No-Script version 11.4.37 by Giorgio Maone - Prevents java-script from running unless I grant permissions, either permanently or temporarily for the given web browsing session. 2) uBlock Origin version 1.59.0, by Raymond Hill - This is one of the best ad-blockers out there, and they keep up with updates automatically in the ongoing war with YouTube's attempts to stop people using ad-blockers. 3) Privacy Badger version 2024.7.17, by EFF Technologists - Blocks sites from tracking you or placing nefarious cookies on your machine 4) SponsorBlock for YouTube - Skip Sponsorships version 5.8.1 by "Ajay (SponsorBlock)" - User driven, users submit video segment times for various in-line sponsor content, and SponsorBlock then skips over those sections for you, if that's your desire. How to run your own generative AI instances on your own computer. (Nature) ... - this is a how article, not a why article -

Further to 138, I also am testing out this Firefox add-on:
Port Authority, version 1.1.4 by "Hacks and Hops" It prevents any web server that you're connecting with from using your browser to perform a local port-scan on your machine and/or local in-house network, and alerts you when the server tries it. There is absolutely no valid reason for a web server port-scanning stuff on your machine or on your local network. That's seriously unethical behaviour (and possibly illegal as well.) @167/Divide by Zero:
In the actual "live performance" days (and not 'Recorded in front of a Live Audience' like pretty much everything is now) networks sometimes got nervous about possible errors or poor performance of an artist's own work, and required a band to pantomime and lip sync their own material while the actual music track was played from tape. For a band as good as Jethro Tull, with as much experience at providing awesome live shows, that was a serious insult to them and their capabilities. MrTea has made a career of computer programming, starting in the early 80's. Mixed those skills with electrical and mechanical engineering, and he's had a variety of tasks at every job. He's done refrigeration, building test equipment and programming it, worked for a company who recycled water/oil/other fluids using centriguges, now is working in manufacturing with robotics. He has loved all his time in this field, and he's worked very hard at it. All of that with a associates degree in science.

If Final Fantasy can run on a Playstation, but not on a PC with the newest, existing hardware, there's a programming problem. Much like how Grand Theft Auto ran horribly, until (if I recall correctly, IIRC) some enterprising software hacker (not pirate) figured out what stupid things were being done, and (also IIRC), passed along the info to the devs to actually fix it. Or just passed along a patch for users to run on their own PCs.
I recall, decades ago, that Final Fantasy #7 was actually ported to the PC by Eidos. The problem was getting it to run right. I think I was able to play the demo, which was the Arena/Coliseum battle section of the game, but getting the full thing to run right didn't work. Final Fantasy 11, the first MMO / Online-Only game of the series, ran, but was janky as hell with a weird installer/launcher to start the game. In total, I think Square got away with their games because, despite any bugs, they were epic and cool enough that it touched the souls of a lot of gamers, much like Star Wars: A New Hope became a phenomenon for decades. Bethesda and their Elder Scrolls games did the same - buggy as all get-out, but epic and expansive beyond other games. Posted by: Another Anon at September 22, 2024 10:03 AM (QNMaY) 252

>80% of software developers are unhappy
There is a lot going on here. As a general rule, most software companies are abysmally managed, but much of that is due to an overall problem of immaturity in the software industry. By which I mean _personal_ immaturity; most software developers have a very juvenile attitude towards their work. Reading over the C3 wiki is a great example of this, from the cutesey names given to the concepts, the lack of any kind of metrics to support Agile/XP's claims, and ultimately the fact that Agile/XP failed massively there yet the C3 project is still held out as a great proof of Agile/XP's success. I started out in conventional engineering before switching to software development and the difference in cultures is night and day. I could speculate about why and what might change that, but the difference is very real, and until software engineering *and engineers* mature there's going to be a lot of morale problems.
