Top Story

  • Qualcomm is reportedly in talks to acquire Intel. (The Verge)

Intel's stock price is in the toilet after years of mismanagement, which is what makes this at all viable. The company is valued at less than Nvidia or AMD, and half as much as Qualcomm.

Which is a little odd because none of those other companies have Intel's massive manufacturing capacity, and is testament to how badly Intel has screwed up.

I very much doubt this deal will go anywhere. Intel is betting everything on its upcoming 18A and 14A process nodes (1.8nm and 1.4nm respectively). If those are successful then all is forgiven. If not, then who would want to buy them?

Tech News

  • Speaking of AMD the company's upcoming Strix Point Halo laptop chip has been spotted in a test sample of an HP ZBook Ultra. (WCCFTech)

Specifically the Ryzen AI 390 variant with 12 Zen 5 CPU cores and 40 graphics cores.

Since it's a ZBook - HP's workstation line - it will not be cheap, but it does come with 64GB of RAM standard.

  • Which is just enough to run the latest edition of Microsoft Flight Simulator. (Tom's Hardware)

The game recommends 64GB of RAM, at least a 12-core CPU, and an Nividia RTX 4080 or AMD Radeon 7900 XT.

    Which is a lot.

  • Concord reportedly cost a total of $400 million to develop. (PlayStation Lifestyle)

This is the game that Sony shut down less than two weeks after launch, at which point it had around 100 players. Total. Worldwide.

Insiders have said that the game had already cost $200 million to develop by the start of 2023, at which point it was in a "laughable state". Sony spent another $200 million getting additional studios to clean it up and create pre-rendered content.

That part seems to have worked because the problem when it launched last month was not bugs - it appeared to be technically competent - but that the game was ugly and boring.

And that part was because nobody was permitted to offer any criticism, for the entire eight years it was in development, what the article calls "toxic positivity". No-one was permitted to speak out, and no-one dared to blow the whistle because they were dealing with the kind of people who would follow them to their next job just to libel them to HR.

  • You can now reprogram the Windows Copilot key if (a) you are stuck with a Windows version with Copilot and (b) your keyboard has a Copilot key. (Tom's Hardware)
We discovered that the Copilot key returns the F23 key, a key hearkening back to the IBM era when IBM keyboards came equipped with function keys from F1 all the way to F24.
This took me a minute. They're not talking about PC keyboards, they're talking about mainframe terminals.

Apparently I'm not that old just yet.

  • You can get a 1.5TB Intel 905p for $299. (Tom's Hardware)

Why would you want to do that? That sounds expensive.

The answer is, you probably wouldn't. This is one of Intel's Optane models, and there's a reason the company doesn't make them anymore.

But if you have an application that is very sensitive to read latency, these drives are five times faster than any flash-based SSD, and last basically forever.

For sequential transfer rates, though, it is five times slower than the latest PCIe 5 M.2 drives.

What you are missing is that Intel is slated to get beacoup cash from the USG to produce silcon.

Qualcomm is a fabless Chip IP provider, and can benefit from that sweet free Uncle Sam cash to produce their chips at subsidized rates that TSMC or Samsung can't compete with.

32 Along similar lines to yesterday's anime recommendations, today I'm going to rave about a composer named Yoko Kanno. She did the music for Cowboy Bebop, including that *incredible* opening song. She also did music for so many other animes that I can't list them all here; go look at her Wikipedia page to see the whole list. But I want to talk about the music she did for Ghost In the Shell's second season (called "2nd Gig"). There's a character whose theme song gives away the fact that he's plotting something evil. You can listen to it for yourself here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGdUYlcFJuU

Do yourself a favor and to listen to it now, then try to figure out what the instrument is that's producing that very weird, threatening sound. In about 15 minutes I'll go ahead and post another comment with the answer.

The Bebop crew is just trying to make a buck. This motley lot of intergalactic loners teams up to track down fugitives and turn them in for cold hard cash. Spike is a hero whose cool façade hides a dark and deadly past. The pilot Jet is a bruiser of a brute who can’t wait to collect the next bounty. Faye Valentine is a femme fatale prone to breaking hearts and separating fools from their money. Along for the ride are the brilliant, but weird, hacker Ed and a super-genius Welsh Corgi named Ein.

62 Grit is showing the first episode of Zorro, the Guy Williams vehicle I remember from my boyhood. I watched two episodes week before last and was impressed at how quickly they moved; a half-hour show had no time for digressions and sub-plots. And Williams really sold his characterization as Z.

Speaking of which, the 1974 TV-movie of The Mark of Zorro with Frank Langella, a few years before his big splash as Dracula, was on Grit last week, and will run again this morning. Langella plays Don Diego as a testosterone-free fop -- much like Superman's image as Clark Kent, except more languid -- so that no one will associate him with his secret identity as Zorro. An interesting take.

I had the large Marx "action figure," though they did not call it that then, with his molded cape and his big black horse Tornado; and the Marx playset with the printed metal fort buildings and a slew of figures including Zorro and Sgt. Garcia.

Williams's Zorro is a dazzling character, vivid and athletic. A fit successor to Douglas Fairbanks Sr.? I dunno, but it brought the character to a whole new generation.

Funny how Disney brought us so many good live-action series with "secret identity" characters like Zorro and The Scarecrow.

83 Disney's Zorro even has a secret cave and tunnel under his father's hacienda, much like the Batcave! And his servant Bernardo, while mute, is never played as a comic character, but with a a great deal of respect given him by Don Diego.

On IMDb, they mention that the show was done in story arcs, very modern, with each season having two 13-episode arcs. Certainly episode two picks up directly after the pilot and refers to the events of the previous episode as happening "last night."

95 Painting the Great Room, Day 4:
So, I did the first coat of primer on the mantel and part of the fireplace, then went to Adoration, Ace and the grocery store.
We decided to switch chores- the baseboards were killing his knees, so I finished them and he completed the fireplace.
Today is the last bit of molding, the second coat of primer (It was really dark grey) and walls. Which should go fast.
I have a suspicion that when it's all done and looking fabulous, he will look at the pale grey ceiling and think we should paint it, but we won't.

127 @101/Huck Follywood: "Looking back at Intel's recent history, where did they go wrong?"

Oh, they've made mis-steps for decades. The FDIV bug for the first Pentium-60MHz chips, the F00F bug in '97, and my personal "favourite": Their choice to stop soldering the integrated heat spreader (lid) directly to the cpu dye and instead use a thermal interface module (TIM) which dries out over the years, making the chip struggle with overheating issues. I have an Intel i7-3770k still in service, and it has this problem and I can't fully load all the cores for video encoding anymore like I used to, or the application crashes. Very frustrating.

I'm going to have to de-lid the blasted thing, clean off the dried out TIM, use liquid metal as the interface between the cpu dye and the IHS, and then re-assemble everything now and put a new cooler on top.

Example process here: https://youtu.be/FG2-A08VQrY

I'm really not looking forward to this.

Gov. Gavin Newsom, who criminalized being outside during COVID and posting memes, did everything possible to fight Prop 36, is now disgusted with Californians.

149 The Concord debacle made me think about troubled film productions. The ones where the cast and director are triple-A celebrities, big names all attached to the film, with huge budges because this will be a blockbuster, much like the previous films each one was in. What could possibly go wrong?

Well, ego for one.

You'll have two or more actors that refuse to work together right, if not actively and literally trying to kill one another. One or more that don't do the work. And/or are full of alcohol or drugs during taping.

And then there's the dynamics between all those actors and the director/producers are in the mix, especially if they end up being in name only, compared to one or more actors actually trying to call the shots.

They make for interesting documentaries after the fact, but end up being a piece of rubbish other than as a source for memes or possibly a standout (See Raul Julia as M. Bison in "Street Fighter") that is the only good part of the train wreck.

164 It's always been possible to trap out the CoPilot key, along with any other. Macro generators have long existed to add stuff but can also be utilized to make a key do nothing. I had a friend who was a writer by profession who had difficulty typing after a stroke. He kept unintentionally hitting the ALT key and bring up a window menu. (The menu for the specific window rather than Windows.) since he wasn't doing anything that needed the ALT key and there were other ways to do those things that possibly might, I just set up a macro app to make the key do nothing. It wasn't a noticeable delay as his typing speed was slower than before the stroke.

Don't think I accepted two factor? I'll look as it asks me every time. Don't know why it would do it only on one FB page and not the other. Using brave with it's own blocker. I'll check the settings and see. Thanks.

185 154 32...Do yourself a favor and to listen to it now, then try to figure out what the instrument is that's producing that very weird, threatening sound. Posted by: Robin Munn at September 21, 2024 05:26 AM (4YLj9)

Is that a suona?

Kazoo. Yoko Kanno managed to make a flippin' KAZOO sound like the most threatening instrument in the orchestra. She's an absolute genius of a composer.

186 BTW, I second the syncthing recommendation. It's quite flexible to set up, which can lead to complexity — you can just share one folder between all your computers, but you can also do things like share the Music folder between your desktop, laptop, and phone, but share the Videos folder between only your desktop and laptop (but not the phone). But knowing that your files aren't passing through someone else's storage, so there's no way for them to use your files to train AI or pass your data on to advertisers? Priceless.
