Not At All Tech News

In the vtuber world, Pina Pengin (formerly of Sony's Prism Project, now with the independent Prima Project) returned to streaming today after several weeks absence when she was flooded out of her home twice in a month.

And Amelia Watson of Hololive English announced her not-a-graduation after four years with the company. Her last stream will be September 30.

But she will still be affiliated with Hololive and both the company's website and the CEO's own tweets hint that we may see her again.

6 Cowboy Bebop:
And on my way to work, I like to get a cup of coffee.
Like the kind of cup of coffee that you get with the doughnuts,
But I never get the doughnut, I just have the cup of coffee.

7 more Bebop lyrics:
But what I think I'd really love is to get up by myself,
On a little tiny island, in the middle of the ocean,
With just me, and a book, and a cellular phone,
And a personal computer in case something came up.
And I could eat, and I'd drink, and I'd run and I'd sleep,
And I wouldn't do nothin' except swim all day,
Except, ya know, my beeper doesn't work under water

15 Just had funny experience. At a corner ATM on clement st in SF and a woman walking 2 young kids, about 6 (boy and girl) goes by and she's singing to them. "People of Springfield please don't eat my cat. Why would you do that?" I did a double-take and chuckled. She saw me and smiled. I'm still chuckling.

So after sweating in 96 degree heat for an hour, followed by about 40 minutes sitting in the office in the AC at the desk under the fan , followed by some dinner, there was just no hope of doing the back yard. Guess that'll have to get done today so I can take the granddaughter to play golf tomorrow.

I can't get into most Anime. A lot of it strikes me as "prepubescent weenies saving the world" and this results in me being unable to engage my suspension of disbelief as I'm too annoyed that the writers thought 12 year olds weren't a bunch of naive stumbling twits that couldn't find their arse with a map and both hands.

Having said that, give "Ghost in the Shell, Stand Alone Complex" first and second "gig" (aka season) a look. It features adults, good story-lines for the two seasons, and the graphics are pretty gorgeous, and the music is pretty impressive.

Check out this track from the soundtracks to the series:
"i can't be cool" by Ilaria Graziano.

https://youtu.be/xmn5dkjUyS0

It's got this wonderful mix of Italian and English lyrics and boy howdy, but Ilaria's voice is beautiful. Absolutely one of my favourite songs. I keep coming back to this and every time I do I play it four or five times in a row and just mentally float away with a contented smile on my face.

27 Evening and morning to all the far-flung outposts of the AoSHQ Empire! Go, send forth the best ye breed . . .! (I dunno what Kipling thought of America in his time, but he'd be horrified at what's happened to the Western world in recent years.)

Back from a tougher-than-I-expected workout. It's relatively less hot out there than it was in July and August, but still will-sapping. Anyway, that's done until Sunday. Maybe I can tiptoe out of work a little early this afternoon, too.

There's such a wide variety of anime genres that "most" anime isn't like that. The variety you're talking about does tend to be the ones with the longest-running shows, as teenagers eat that stuff up. But if you're looking for anime for grown-ups, there's plenty there too. I recommend checking out Planetes (not a typo, there's an "e" before the final s). It's a show about a team of astronauts whose job is cleaning up orbital debris. They're the space version of garbage collectors, and their prestige is correspondingly low — but the job is important, so they stick to it. Hard science fiction (orbital mechanics are correct, and so on), plot that makes sense, and characters with some depth to them.

52 If long-running epic-scale space opera is what you're looking for, Legend of the Galactic Heroes may be worth a look. I've only watched the first couple of episodes (out of 100+) so far, so I can't tell you much about it. But with just two episodes under my belt I can already tell that: 1) it's war, so anyone can die and nobody has Plot Armor (except possibly the two main point-of-view characters, one each on opposite sides of the war); 2) the characters are adults (no teenage soldiers here); 3) I'm going to need to take notes to remember everyone's name. It's an early 90's anime so its visuals look a little dated, but it keeps turning up on people's recommendation lists so there's got to be a few things it did right.

58 Great Room update-
I put the wall color on a few areas to test and we love it- I truly believe the warmer lighter color is going to cheer us up after six years of gray.

But the trim, which is slightly different colors in places all has to be given two coats of white. I did the floor taping, and general go-fer, but he insists on doing the actual brushwork.

Today is finishing the trim, priming the fireplace and mantelpiece (my job) and starting on the walls. I'm good with a roller, so I can do some of that.

We actually reached a quick agreement on door and mantel colors. Nice!

We are beginning to think we might be Too Old For This.

60 My final anime recommendation for the thread is in a completely different direction, fantasy rather than sci-fi. These days there are lots of "isekai" (Japanese for "other world") shows, where someone gets pulled into an alternate world (usually a fantasy setting) and has to save the day over there. Many of those are smack in the middle of the "teenagers save the world" category that Grumpy and Recalcitrant dislikes. But Twelve Kingdoms is from 20+ years ago (2002-2003), before the flood of copycat isekai shows. It does lean on the "Chosen One" trope, but it does so in a way that makes it work:

1) The protagonist is the Chosen One, but she'd really rather NOT be, as all it brings her (at first) is lots of people trying to kill her.

2) Her friend isn't the Chosen One but really wants to be, and this brings them into conflict with each other.

3) The animation and art are beautiful. Really gorgeous. Check out the first couple episodes for the art alone.

Oh, and you really end up caring about the characters. I love Rakushun; he's one of the best reasons to watch Twelve Kingdoms.
