How Japanese have produced wood for 700 years, without cutting down trees.

Daisugi is an ancient Japanese forestry technique developed in the 14th century originally used by people living in the Kitayama region, because the territory was extremely poor in saplings.

They planted cedars pruned in a special way to produce shoots that eventually would become perfect, straight, knot-free lumbers.

The shoots are gently pruned by hand every two years leaving only the top boughs, allowing them to grow straight. Harvesting takes 20 years and old 'tree stock' can grow up to a hundred shoots at a time.

There was actually another reason why the technique was developed: fashion. In the 14th century, a linear, stylized form of architecture known as sukiya-zukuri (数寄屋造り became popular, and every prominent samurai or nobleman wanted a house built in this way.

There were simply not enough raw materials available to keep up with demand, so daisugi was developed to produce more wood in a shorter time.

The wood produced with this technique has also impressive qualities: it's 140% more flexible than standard cedar and 200% denser and stronger. And, it's extremely durable.

A dog rescuer takes his pack out for the morning jog.

A channel I watch a lot is Sitting With Dogs. The guy, Rocky Kanaka, sits with dogs in shelters that need help -- dogs that are aggressive or afraid of people or too frightened to even move. Dogs that aren't going to get adopted, unless someone breaks them out of their shells.

This was an especially cute one. The dog was neglected, or maybe was wild its whole life, and has a very bad case of mites. But five minutes in she starts getting very playful. Here's an update on her, or a "Pupdate." She's at a rescue now as she recovers from her bad mite infestation and learns how to be a dog. She's out in California, and if you like her, you might be able to adopt her.

Partially paralyzed dog is able to run thanks to a wheelchair-like rig.

Even dogs enjoy petting a dog.

Giving a horse a groom.

This video is upsetting: It's the GoPro video from a skier falling into a deep glacial ravine. I'm posting it, though, because, given that the video was recovered, I'm pretty confident the skier was recovered as well. Not recommended for claustrophobes or bathophobes.

BREAKING - Basketball great Dikembe Mutombo dies aged 58: NBA

Congolese-American basketball great Dikembe Mutombo, renowned as one of the best defensive players in NBA history, has died aged 58, the league announced on Monday.

Mutombo, an eight-time NBA all-star, passed away surrounded by his family after a battle with brain cancer, the league added.

“Dikembe Mutombo was simply larger than life,” NBA commissioner Adam Silver said of the 7ft 2in (2.18m) Hall-of-Famer in a statement.

“On the court, he was one of the greatest shot blockers and defensive players in the history of the NBA. Off the floor, he poured his heart and soul into helping others,” Silver added, noting Mutombo’s extensive humanitarian work.

Mutombo, who played 18 seasons in the NBA, worked tirelessly to improve living conditions in his native Democratic Republic of Congo through his personal foundation.

A person I know from work is actually from the Asheville area and he set up a gofundme account. He's in WI but he is going to fill up a trailer and haul supplies down. He's runs our cafeteria so he will be setting up and cooking food down there too.

Obviously you don't know me, but he's a stand up guy and I will vouch for him and I am going to donate my own $$ too. Sometimes it helps to have a referral when donating money.

51 "Daisugi" just means big cedar.

You have to be aware that the Japanese love these "140% stronger" type bullshit numbers. The popular "science" media are always talking about stuff being empirically better based on made up numbers and no one believes them since they all know it is bullshit. Not saying that there was no reason to do what they did (wood grows quicker if root system is already established. Similar practices of pollarding and coppicing were practiced in Europe.) Just that they did it because it grew faster.

Also, that bit about cutting off all but the crown is common woodsman practice to eliminate knots. They even have machines that run up the trees and trim the lower branches. I don't think it is done in modern commercial stands, but it is not such a big deal.

Oh, btw, Cedar is a soft-wood.

76 My guess is that they mean clear, or knot-free, wood is stronger and lasts longer. Makes sense because knots are always a weak point.

In my Japanese house all the trim is knot free, as are most of the posts. I should clarify that the posts are only knot free on one side -- the north side as the tree grew -- and they take special care to put those on the exposed side. They also hide the knotty posts in corners where they are not seen, or closets. The choicest posts are all beautiful clear wood.

In accordance with the decision of the political echelon, a few hours ago, the IDF began limited, localized, and targeted ground raids based on precise intelligence against Hezbollah terrorist targets and infrastructure in southern Lebanon. These targets are located in villages close to the border and pose an immediate threat to Israeli communities in northern Israel.

The IDF is operating according to a methodical plan set out by the General Staff and the Northern Command which IDF soldiers have trained and prepared for in recent months.

The Israeli Air Force and IDF Artillery are supporting the ground forces with precise strikes on military targets in the area.

These operations were approved and carried out in accordance with the decision of the political echelon. Operation “Northern Arrows” will continue according to the situational assessment and in parallel to combat in Gaza and in other arenas.

The IDF is continuing to operate to achieve the goals of the war and is doing everything necessary to defend the citizens of Israel and return the citizens of northern Israel to their homes.

Mercy Chefs is a faith-based, non-profit disaster relief organization which provides restaurant-quality meals to victims, volunteers, and first responders in national emergencies and natural disasters. Their mobile kitchens are self-sustaining, able to run in areas without power, and capable of purifying their own water.

Mercy Chefs is often one of the first organizations to arrive following a major weather event and is capable of providing 15,000 meals daily to meet the needs of the devastated community. They pre-mobilized in Florida even before Hurricane Helene made landfall, already have on-the-ground resources activated in Tennessee, and now have a response team headed to Ashville, North Carolina.

Donations can be made online, or mailed to 711 Washington Street, Portsmouth, VA 23704. You can also follow their efforts on social media (@mercychefs).

141 #122 Pete didn't hit much in that Series with the Yankees (he was World Series MVP the year before against Boston), but you should go find some youtube vids of what he did to the Yankees leadoff hitter Mickey Rivers. He as literally 10 feet in front of the dirt cut-out and *then* would start his momentum in as the pitcher released the ball. He basically dared Rivers to hit line drives at him while simultaneously announcing "There will be NO bunt hits this series." It was Rose being Rose--the ultimate competitor.

Ginger was an experienced slightly older made-up bombshell type who had obviously been through the Hollywood casting couch trip and know what was expected of her. She would have known every page of the Kama Sutra, given and gotten it in ways only the sickest producers could summon up in their vile imaginations, been to orgys and probably been trafficked in ways that would make P. Diddy blush black. She could no doubt handle the whole male castaway contingent simultaneously while figuring a way to pleasure Mrs. Howell in the bargain.

429 Sawyer Merritt @SawyerMerritt 9h
Last year, the FCC upheld its 2022 decision to deny SpaceX's @Starlink an $885 million subsidy to bring broadband to 642,000 Americans living in rural areas. FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel didn't think Starlink could deliver the promised service.

Today, Starlink is connecting over 7,700 new customers per day, FEMA is sending Starlink terminals to help victims in North Carolina due to Hurricane Helene, and the world's largest airlines are signing contracts to outfit their entire fleets with it. It has proven to be a reliable and fast service for millions of users.

The FCC had program requirements that Starlink didn't have to meet until 2025, yet the FCC Chair was unfairly making a prediction about whether Starlink would meet them or not years before the deadline. Starlink needed to show that it was more likely than not that it could provide high-speed Internet service (low-latency, 100/20 Mbps service) to at least 40% of the 642,000 rural premises by Dec 31, 2025. Starlink did that.

So why revoke that $885M award? It doesn't make any sense.

Posted by: andycanuck (CEzQx) at September 30, 2024 09:11 PM (CEzQx)

430 Sawyer Merritt @SawyerMerritt 9h
FCC Chair Rosenworcel suggested Starlink is not a trustworthy technology. If that were true, why are other parts of the U.S. government entering into large contracts with @SpaceX for Starlink service?

The FCC should reverse its decision, because if the government tries to connect these 642,000 people using fiber, it will cost 10 times more and take years longer. SpaceX's Starlink terminal production is ramping up so fast that they will be the largest printed circuit board manufacturer in the Americas within a few months. The biggest loser in all of this are those 642k people that could have fast internet much sooner.

Rose did play waaaay in on Mickey Rivers at 3B, so he couldn't try his bunting. It drove the guy nuts it seemed. Rivers hit as bad as Rose did.

482 In my Japanese house all the trim is knot free, as are most of the posts. I should clarify that the posts are only knot free on one side -- the north side as the tree grew -- and they take special care to put those on the exposed side. They also hide the knotty posts in corners where they are not seen, or closets. The choicest posts are all beautiful clear wood.

The leaving of branches on the south side of the sapling is probably to avoid sun scald, which can happen when the winter sun heats up and damages the young, tender bark when the sap is either very cold, or just sunburns it.
In the PNW some small woodlands owners will limb their young trees up a good 20 feet to get knot free logs when harvested, upping the value to the harvest. It can take a bit of time to do, and there is the risk of sunscald damaging the trunk and reducing the value of the trees, especially on south facing slopes and at the edge of clearings or recently harvested units.

I think the distinction is that if the bullfighter hacked off the bull's head with one blow, that would be one thing but to torture the bull over a long time with slow wounds to draw out the suffering is a lot worse.

Hunters preferably inflict a more humane death, as do butchers.

As for people who think bullfighting is dangerous for the matador... It is not. If anything, the picadors are in more danger when they hobble (or drug, or both) the bull before the matador does his gay little Spaniard dance.

But they aren't in much danger either. Nowhere near the danger an American rodeo rider is in. Those guys actually do die, sometimes. But the bull never does. He just goes through a crappy day from time to time, and then gets put out to stud, or be humanely killed.

Some horses like to mess with you when you are saddling them. They'll puff out their stomach/chest when you cinch the saddle. So you think it's on there good and tight, but they'll pull it in when you're up there so the saddle becomes loose and you fall over to the side.

For those, you gotta give a little knee to their belly when you saddle them.
