Daily Tech News 19 September 2024

Top Story

  • Nintendo and the Pokemon Company are officially suing Palworld creator Pocketpair. (WCCFTech)

At issue is the idea of catching and training weird animals, that Nintendo asserts it stole fair and square.

Japanese patent law is a bit weird and unlike western patents, so whether they have a case is uncertain. One major problem is that Pocketpair now has a billion dollars to fund its defense.

  • Speaking of western patents Congress has decided that now is the perfect time to fuck everything up. (Ars Technica)

The Supreme Court has already thrown out entire categories of patent. You can't patent something that is already commonplace "but on a computer", and you can't patent people's genes.

The proposed bill is supported by the larger pharmaceutical companies and opposed by literally everyone else.

Only in government (looking at you Pete Buttplug) can someone take credit for spending 8 billion dollars on 7 recharging stations. Great return on 'investment'.

53 The pirate dialect that everyone parodies now was pretty much created by a single actor, Dorset native Robert Newton in the 1950 Disney production of Treasure Island. Playing Long John Silver, he used the dialect of his home county and Cornwall as the basis for his characterization. It's become a kind of de facto "pirate" speech ever since. Quite a legacy!

And a wonderful movie, too. We watched it recently and it has almost perfect amounts of comedy, action, betrayal, etc. for adults to enjoy and young people to stay intrigued by.

Well, maybe not most kids anymore now that they can watch Saw on their phones when they're 8, but it's still a great movie and kids that haven't had their childhood ripped completely out from under them could still enjoy it.

I remember when some big announcement was made by Biden and the NC governor about "expanding internet for communities" with these billions.

That's the beauty of it, though. They never said they would provide ISPs or fiber. What they did was give poor people $15 or so to use towards their bill, and, at the same time, internet access went up a similar amount.

88 I did not know that.

I thought it was Oliver Reed.

There's a few 'Oliver Twist' movies out there. The Brits are the best, though. Although the musical 'Oliver!' wan't my favorite, there were some very good parts, specifically with Oliver Reed. He was also good in 'The Three Musketeers' with Raquel Welch.

I drink a LOT of coffee. Have for 25 years or so. This is the best one I've found, *and* it keeps the coffee hotter for longer than the Contigo that I previously liked so much:

127 I have a good bit of experience with the FAA and yes they do that sort of stuff to everyone and you just say, "yes sir".

They will hold up any aspect of compliance finding, during manufacture, test, certification, small STCs and whole aircraft programs. And companies deal with it. I've been in flight test, the bird is in the air, tens of thousands in fuel and prep, but i's weren't dotted in some conformity report and that's RTB, day scrubbed, schedules shifted to the right.

Everyone at any high level in commercial aerospace has experienced this and knows management pushing against it means doom.

128 The problem car manufacturers have with AM radio isn't the extra $1 it would cost to include it as standard in the radio package, it's EVs.

I purchased a 2021 RAV4 hybrid unlimited and it has AM as I wanted. Unfortunately I can only use that feature when the car is sitting still. Apparently when all the electronic hybrid stuff is in play it puts out noise in the AM band. And I understand this is common in EVs - in the rush to market and because they didn't have to the car companies didn't design and test for the electronics farking up AM reception.

Unless the govt also requires EV cars with AM reception to actually receive AM when the car is in motion this is kabuki theatre legislation, made for show more than for effectiveness.
