Been reading through all of Zane Grey's works because most of them are on Gutenberg and I am cheap.

He wrote only one feud book, To the Last Man, but raising cattle and the impact of rustling are central to many of his novels.

28 At first glance on my phone's tiny screen, I thought it was some kind of military last stand photo...Zulu Wars, Custer, Elphinstone's Retreat from Kabul, that sort of thing.

Then, I zoomed in and realized it was just a bunch of cowboys.

Then, it clicked it basically was a last stand shootout, just on a much less grand scale. I suppose there are smaller stages, but never small actors.

82 Remington creates a mood with his paintings but this one is hard core tough. A group of dead and dying men and horses are in the middle of a flat expanse. Only the distant hills and huge sky provide any relief from the prairie. All the effectiveness of the scene is captured in the postures of the people and animals which are detailed enough but not overly so. The small grouping in the midst of such an open expanse demonstrates how futile and unimportant their fight was in the world. And the carnage is due to their stupidity regarding one (one!) unbranded cow.

I don't usually think of Remington art providing a moral tone but this painting screams it's message.

It's similar to Rockwell. He's usually known for his romantic illustrations of smalltown Americana. Once in while though, he dabbled in social commentary. Those are pretty powerful.

The city came and cut down a bunch of ours along the road because they were into the power lines, trim them sure, but they cleared out basically the entire blockade of trees so now you can see into the property form the road, I get mad every time I pull out of the driveway.

For context, I linked the same Des Moines Register Poll from September 2020, which showed Trump and Biden were tied (!?). Biden eventually lost the state by about 8.5%.

When I said it actually looks like Harris is 4% BEHIND Biden's losing 2020 pace...no responses. Reality is a hell of a thing.

When phones were on landline, you couldn't screen your calls. That was a better time for pollsters. The results still skewed against people who wouldn't spend 5 minutes talking to a stranger. I wouldn't.

Cell phones took years to go mainstream, and there wasn't a year to demark when polls went from somewhat of a sham to a total sham.

Even late 80s are different from mid-90s. It's unlikely that kids born mid-90s or after ever didn't have access to a computer with internet access (either at home or at school) or smartphones (born in 1995 is 15 in 2010, and probably had a smartphone by age 20).

The "generation" concept just doesn't work anymore, for both social reasons (technology is a big one) and simple natural variance. We interrupted that variance worldwide from 1939-1945. That's abnormal. The Boomers as a generational monolith is an aberration. It's now getting back to normal.

The entire "generations as monoliths bound by time" concept is stupid and doesn't work anymore. It doesn't happen without a world-historic disruption that both interrupts family formation for a significant period of time *and* resets cultural perceptions across the board.

The War did both, which is why the Boomers are real. They were also a mega-generation and begot tons of the Millennials, which is why they're sort of real - but only sort of. The whole concept has run out of steam at this point, though. It had to. It was an aberration, and aberrations tend not to be sustainable.

300 yards with 7.62x39 is not ideal. Most of the ammo available as well as most of the launching platforms generally suck compared to an AR. You may hit an 8.5x11 more of often that not, but you'll have double the dispersion of a cheap AR with cheap (but non steel cased) ammo.
