Loosely inspired by the "cattle wars" of the 1880s and 1890s, in which wealthy cattle barons gradually displaced independent homesteaders and small-scale ranchers, Frederic Remington's painting depicts the deadly aftermath of a shootout over the ownership of an unbranded cow. At first glance on my phone's tiny screen, I thought it was some kind of military last stand photo...Zulu Wars, Custer, Elphinstone's Retreat from Kabul, that sort of thing.
Then, I zoomed in and realized it was just a bunch of cowboys. Then, it clicked it basically was a last stand shootout, just on a much less grand scale. I suppose there are smaller stages, but never small actors. Posted by: Moron Analyst at September 16, 2024 09:35 AM (JCZqz) 29

@19 In 1895, an illustration based on the painting accompanied a nostalgic article by Remington’s friend Owen Wister in Harper’s Monthly about the history of cowboys, whom Wister likened to Anglo-Saxon knights. Remington and Wister's glorification of the American cowboy as a symbol of Anglo-Saxon culture was a response to the perceived threat represented by increasing immigration.

Remington creates a mood with his paintings but this one is hard core tough. A group of dead and dying men and horses are in the middle of a flat expanse. Only the distant hills and huge sky provide any relief from the prairie. All the effectiveness of the scene is captured in the postures of the people and animals which are detailed enough but not overly so. The small grouping in the midst of such an open expanse demonstrates how futile and unimportant their fight was in the world. And the carnage is due to their stupidity regarding one (one!) unbranded cow.
I don't usually think of Remington art providing a moral tone but this painting screams it's message. Wow! Posted by: JTB at September 16, 2024 09:44 AM (zudum) 83

The r/Iowa Reddit forum is (like most other State forums, I assume), nothing but Lefties bitching about Republicans. They're all excited about this Iowa poll, however:
Donald Trump leads Democrat Kamala Harris in the latest Iowa Poll 47% to 43%. Harris has dramatically improved on Joe Biden’s performance; Biden trailed Donald Trump by 18 percentage points in a June Iowa Poll. They're trying to contain their excitement, saying it doesn't necessarily mean Iowa is in play (although maybe it's trending back to a purple swing state!?!?!?), but they're hoping it bodes well for general national trends, and especially Wisconsin. For context, I linked the same Des Moines Register Poll from September 2020, which showed Trump and Biden were tied (!?). Biden eventually lost the state by about 8.5%. When I said it actually looks like Harris is 4% BEHIND Biden's losing 2020 pace...no responses. Reality is a hell of a thing. I know Weasel knows this: "Remington was a cousin of Eliphalet Remington, founder of the Remington Arms Company, which is considered America's oldest gunmaker.[9] Wikipedia, too. To think me, born in 81, is the same generation as my sister, born in 88, is absolutely crazy. Early 80s gre up with both analog and digital childhoods. Late 80s and after not so much.
Posted by: BruceWayne at September 16, 2024 10:32 AM (CIS44) ++++ Even late 80s are different from mid-90s. It's unlikely that kids born mid-90s or after ever didn't have access to a computer with internet access (either at home or at school) or smartphones (born in 1995 is 15 in 2010, and probably had a smartphone by age 20). The "generation" concept just doesn't work anymore, for both social reasons (technology is a big one) and simple natural variance. We interrupted that variance worldwide from 1939-1945. That's abnormal. The Boomers as a generational monolith is an aberration. It's now getting back to normal. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at September 16, 2024 10:37 AM (HnUIn) 349

Milenials are generally defined as those born 1981 to 1995. So the oldest ones are 43. Youngest ones are 29. There’s no official definition for these things but generally speaking that’s how it’s defined. ...
Posted by: News Update at September 16, 2024 10:34 AM (Hykxx) ++++ And go ahead and think about that and then ask yourself, "is this sane or relevant?" 1981-1995 is 14 years. 14 years is not a "generation." 20-25 years is a "generation." The entire "generations as monoliths bound by time" concept is stupid and doesn't work anymore. It doesn't happen without a world-historic disruption that both interrupts family formation for a significant period of time *and* resets cultural perceptions across the board. The War did both, which is why the Boomers are real. They were also a mega-generation and begot tons of the Millennials, which is why they're sort of real - but only sort of. The whole concept has run out of steam at this point, though. It had to. It was an aberration, and aberrations tend not to be sustainable. He was 98 years old, so the court went easy on him and he did not do time. He had a reputation as a tough bad actor. A few years later he killed a preacher/historian and his son when they went to interview him against advice from my uncle.
