The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

The Secret Service failures in Florida are as crude and obvious as they were in Pennsylvania which means that, in the words of my former GB News colleague Neil Oliver, this is happening because they want it to happen. They want Trump to die, and they are willing to create the necessary conditions. Mark Steyn

Quote II

“I want to give people a plant-based option. If I can give people a place to have the option that’s placed smack dab in the middle of where your McDonald’s, Chick-fil-A, and Burger King [are], people may see a Hart House and say, ‘I’m going to go plant-based today.'” Comedian Kevin Hart

Quote III

"We found that children using saltwater nose drops had cold symptoms for an average of six days, where those with usual care had symptoms for eight days," Dr. Steve Cunningham

Online dating which leads to marriage, bad. Or something like that.

Online Dating Caused a Rise in US Income Inequality, Research Paper Shows

(Bloomberg) -- Online dating may be partially to blame for an increase in income inequality in the US in recent decades, according to a research paper.

Since the emergence of dating apps that allow people to look for a partner based on criteria including education, Americans have increasingly been marrying someone more like themselves. That accounts for about half of the rise in income inequality among households between 1980 and 2020, researchers from the Federal Reserve Banks of Dallas and St. Louis and Haverford College found.

Nobel prize-winner tallies two more retractions, bringing total to 13

Gregg Semenza, a professor of genetic medicine and director of the vascular program at Johns Hopkins’ Institute for Cell Engineering in Baltimore, shared the 2019 Nobel prize in physiology or medicine for “discoveries of how cells sense and adapt to oxygen availability.”

Since pseudonymous sleuth Claire Francis and others began using PubPeer to point out potential duplicated or manipulated images in Semenza’s work in 2019, the researcher has retracted 12 papers. A previous retraction from 2011 for a paper co-authored with Naoki Mori – who with 31 retractions sits at No. 25 on our leaderboard – brings the total to 13.

Clueless?!?! How could that be with gubmint learned kids?

BLUFFTON, South Carolina (AP) — On the first day of his American National Government class, Prof. Kevin Dopf asks how many of his students are United States citizens. Every hand shoots up.

“So, how did all you people become citizens?” he asks. “Did you pass a test?”

“No,” one young woman says tentatively. “We were born here.”

It’s a good thing. Based on his years of making his students at the University of South Carolina Beaufort take the test given to immigrants seeking U.S. citizenship, most would be rejected.

“Thirty, 35% of the students will pass it,” says Dopf, a retired Army lieutenant colonel and former West Point instructor. “The rest of them are clueless. I mean, they’re just clueless.”

When will anybody attached to the Vindmans crawl back under the rock they came from? Or in this case, "She seems nice."

The wife of Alexander Vindman, the man behind Donald Trump’s impeachment, mocked the attempted assassination of Donald Trump Sunday afternoon at the hands of a fellow Ukraine loyalist.

“No ears were harmed. Carry on with your Sunday afternoon,” Rachel Vindman wrote, dismissing the attempted killing of a former president and making light of how he was actually shot in the head two months ago.

“Sorry you’re triggered. I mean no I’m not. I don’t care a little bit,” she added.

Kennedy did not offer details about the incident, but it first became public thanks to a 2012 interview with Kennedy's daughter, Kick Kennedy, with Town and Country Magazine.

In the interview, Kick describes her father cutting the head off of a dead whale and strapping it to the roof of their vehicle, before driving from a beach in Massachusetts to Mount Kisco, New York.

[snip snip snip...]

"Every time we accelerated on the highway, whale juice would pour into the windows of the car, and it was the rankest thing on the planet," Kick told the magazine, saying the incident happened sometime around 1994.

"We all had plastic bags over our heads with mouth holes cut out, and people on the highway were giving us the finger, but that was just normal day-to-day stuff for us," she added.

56 Since the emergence of dating apps that allow people to look for a partner based on criteria including education, Americans have increasingly been marrying someone more like themselves.

-------

LOL, that ain't it

Men rarely care about how much a woman makes. The richer a man is, the less he cares. But they never care much.

Women *always* want the man to make more than them. A lot more.

Until recently, that didn't matter much, because women had a far lower earning potential. As it evens out, they reach for higher and higher income men. Meaning many fewer overall marriages overall, with an ever-narrowing income gap in the marriages that do happen.

The advent of online dating is purely incidental.

60 THIS is the shocking moment a Brazilian TV presenter and mayoral candidate smashed a political rival over the head with a chair.

I posted this earlier today, it leaves off a lot of the oddness of Brazilian politics and the "new style of politicians"

Pablo Marçal, one of five candidates for mayor in the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo, was beaten with a chair during a debate by one of his opponents, José Luiz Datena, in what had become an exchange of personal attacks and political accusations. Datena, a television news reporter, claims to have lost control when Marçal brought up an old sexual harrassment claim made against Datena, and then taunted Datena to do anything about it.
The assault caused a pause in the debate, which resumed after Pablo Marçal was taken to the hospital for treatment of broken ribs.

Pablo Marçal, at 32 years old, is referred to as a personal development influencer turned right-wing politician, and is noted for recently being deplatformed off of social media in Brazil, accused of offering to pay his followers to get his political message out.
In response to the deplatforming, Marçal has stated that all persecution accelerates the process.

I'm pooped. Stay away from Seattle? The three ginormous cruise ships in port seem not to be observant. That's a lot of tourists. And they take my boat in the afternoon when I'm trying to go home. And they ask stupid questions and make stupid comments and can't figure out how to buy a bloody ticket. And they let their brats run around on the boat and they trip and fall in the raised doorways and then scream when the blood pours out of their mouths and they spit teeth out on the deck. Then there's the brats climbing on the railing and threatening to fall overboard and the captain yelling at them over the intercom. Then they can't figure out how to get off the damn boat and walk continuously down the dock. Nooooo, they have to stop every three feet and look at the smelt and the jellyfish, blocking everyone from getting past them. Then they turn around and ride again. And again.

Stay away you stupid bastards.

179 Rachel Vindman committed lots of political violence against buffets at DoD functions.

Caterers get together and trade war stories at Veterans of Pentagon Soirees events each year.

"You should have seen Rachel at Pork Chop Hill..." one will say, "it was smaller than the pile of bones by the time she was done."

"That's nothing," another grizzled griddle-jockey might reply. "I was at the bloodbath in Tysons Corner. BOTH Vindmans showed up, loaded for bear. After every chafing dish was empty, they started in on the staff. They ate one of my feet while I gritted my teeth, hid underneath a couple half-eaten cocktail waitresses, held my breath, and played dead until they passed out from the post-prandial coma."

The forces of evil don't have complete control..the local PD hauled in the guy who was obviously intended to escape...they used a guy with obvious ties to Ukraine which is obviously tied to the forces of evil. 273 I traveled to Seattle a couple of times before a radio host Michael Medved began to warn of the decline of Seattle politics and a possible fraudulent Gov election in 2004 with the infamous "Car Trunk Ballots"...Republican Dino Rossi was declared the winner in the initial automated count and again in a subsequent automated recount, but after a second recount done by hand, Democrat Christine Gregoire took the lead by a margin of 129 votes because of the "Car Trunk Ballots."

This was the beginning of the Democrate machine in the Pacific Northwest. Commiefornia soon thereafter developed the "VOTE HARVESTING"

Ya see how they play? Most disturbing was the Republican's lack of counter to this.

379 The "Big Three" in the elevator business were once Otis, Dover and Westinghouse.

And then, sometime in the early '80s, you started to see elevator cars with absolutely no manufacturer's "branding". Not on the Nickel/Brass floor threshold, were the name was traditionally a nice casting in the metal, nor on the control button panel. And now, not even on the City Permit which is posted in most elevator cars.

It's because they don't want to make it easy for the clumsy or litigiously "clumsy" public, to know who to "set up" for the sure thing shakedown lawsuit.

Next thing you know, you won't see the word "Boeing" featured anywhere on your jetliner, either. Kind of like you see the brand name "JEEP" precisely NO WHERE on the Grand Wagoneer.

But that last one is so Stellantis can sell off the Wagoneer without having to wrangle over branding or rebranding. Or, they'll keep it for themselves when they sell off what remains of "JEEP", in liquidation.

391 Set the El Camino aside for the nonce, but not before replacing three of the four tires with ones that (hopefully) will hold air for a few weeks. Pretty much exhausted my supply of 15 inch "roller" tires, too. Already decided to replace the rear brakes, drums and shoes. Had a look at the front. Not good. Ordered rotors, pads and calipers. This car has to pass a fairly rigorous "out of Province" inspection in order to get it registered here, and brakes have to be better than "barely working".

With the El Camino parked back in its old slot, I brought up the '99 Suburban, and replaced the axle seal and spindle nut on the right rear, and took the left rear drum off. Dirty in there, but no leaks. Washed all the parts, installed new axle seal, and put it all back together, save for the drum and wheel. They will get painted tomorrow. This vehicle, too, has to pass the out of Province scrutiny.

427 396 About those salt water nose drops.
Makes sense.
Salt water contains natural iodine.
Iodine is a virus killer.
Doctors swab iodine (Betadine) on patients before they cut them open.
Betadine also makes an iodine nose spray that kills viruses preventing colds, even flu.

Posted by: Nan G at September 16, 2024 11:58 PM (lV9qu)
----
The salt may contain IODIDE if it is made from unpurified sea salt or has had iodide added (potassium iodide or sodium iodide usually). Iodide doesn't kill viruses nor bacteria. Iodine kills bacteria (I don't know about viruses) but it's not in this salt water.
I'm not sure what you mean by natural iodine. All iodine is from the Earth. (A minuscule amount can be made in nuclear reactions.) It doesn't grow on plants. However kelp and other seaweed has it.
Betadine is an aqueous solution of iodine in sodium iodide so yes this contains I2 amongst others.

437 Until recently, that didn't matter much, because women had a far lower earning potential. As it evens out, they reach for higher and higher income men. Meaning many fewer overall marriages overall, with an ever-narrowing income gap in the marriages that do happen.

The advent of online dating is purely incidental.
Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at September 16, 2024 10:13 PM (0FoWg)

I think it's more than just that. There's also education to consider. I don't think most college-educated women want to marry men w/o degrees. And with a college degree being deemed by society to be more important to status than previously, more college-educated men seek out women with degrees. And the typing pools, secretaries, etc. of yesteryear (where men with higher paying jobs could meet women from lower economic status) are largely gone. Throw in the dating apps where people can more easily choose the pool to fish in, and we get more wealthier, educated people marrying within their class.

Now, like in Idiocracy (iirc), these wealthier people are now having fewer children, concentrating that wealth in fewer people while the lower economic classes grow (along with all the imports).

Avanti was created and built by Studebaker for two model years, 1963 and 1964. When Studebaker ceased automobile production in South Bend in December, 1963, they ceased Avanti production too. They continued to make cars in Hamilton, Ontario for the 1965 and (partial) 1966 model years, but shut down there in April, 1966 (despite having passed their break-even point for the year). Geoff Newman and Nate Altman, who owned Standard Surplus, and outlet that sold surplus Studebaker inventory, bought the rights to the Avanti, and batch of unbuilt frames and bodies, and introduced the Avanti II in 1967, with a Chevy engine in it. That car continued to be produced in several iterations, with styling changes, well into the 1990's.

I think one of the later iterations was built on a Ford platform. AFAIK, they all had fiberglass bodies, so not subject to body rust, and kept their good looks for a long time. I have 2 of the '63's here. One is a project car, with all Studebaker power train, and the other is a driver, and has a 283 McKinnon engine (283 Chevy built at the McKinnon engine plant in Ontario, and used in Canadian Chevys, Pontiacs, and...Studebakers. By the serial number, this engine came out of a 1966 Studebaker) It also has a TH 350 GM transmission, and a wimpy Dana Model 27 rear axle. Still a pretty car, and a nice driver. Black on black, it is.

455 Seattle avg. annual rainfall. Something along the lines of 42 inches per year.

Houston, TX av. annual rainfall. 48 inches per year.

Difference?

Seattle is a slow-soft rain... drizzle, even. Many days, many weeks. Sometimes, moths. Even the mildew grows mildew.

Houston? All that rain concentrated in a spring and fall rainy season. Several inches of rain, per day.

Each "season" lasts but a few weeks, or less. But OH HOWDY, can Houston do the floods with the Biblical rains!

The rest of the year, it's simply HUMID. You have to learn to chew the air before you breathe it.

Speaking of climate normals, they have rejiggered ours. They calculate normals based on a 20 yr (period). We were at the 1981 - 2010 base, and now they've updated to the 1991 - 2020 base. My cousin will go on at great length about the differences between these normals and mean/averages, a distinction that is lost on a lot of people.

Anyway, our "new normal" is now 49.67"/yr. The rebasing the normals changed the monthly normals, and now the wettest months are July, Aug, Dec, and Mar. Mar used to the wettest month.

I purchased some grape juice loaded with fiber, so they could do that with anything if they wanted.

Americans always want a simple solution. Get rid of this one food and start eating this other food. Everything will be great from then on. They say eat blackberries and blueberries, but I already do that. They say eat nuts, fiber, etc. Been there, done that.. Still the health issues.

Not to be argumentative, but I doubt there are 100 people that ever lived whose health went South because they drank too much orange juice.

487 I've drunk an orange. They make or made an orange corer. A tube about 3/4" in diameter with teeth at the leading end. First soften the orange then bore the corer into the top of the orange, throw away the top skin and bore all the way in. Now, one has entree into perfectly fresh orange juice.

After all the juice is drunk one can easily peel and eat the balance.

Voiceover: Donald Trump's back. And he's out for control.
Trump clip: "I would have every right to go after them."
Voiceover: Complete control.
Trump clip: "I will wield that power very aggressively."
Voiceover: And he has a plan to get it.
Trump clip: "Detailed plans for exactly what our movement will do."
Voiceover: It's called Project 2025. A 922-page blueprint to make Donald Trump the most powerful President ever. Overhauling the Department of Justice. Giving Trump the unchecked power to seek vengeance. Eliminating the Department of Education. And defunding K-12 schools. Requiring the government to monitor women's pregnancies and severe cuts to Medicare and Social Security. Donald Trump may try to deny it, but those (Project 2025) are Donald Trump's plans.
Trump clip: "Well, revenge does take time, I will say that. And sometimes revenge can be justified."
Voiceover: He'll take control. We'll pay the price.

500 500

501 Morning, insomaniacals! I is here. Remarkable, considering my nightmare about my separation from the then-Mrs. Wolfus No. 1 and finding she had transferred all her calls to a local lawyer.

Back to sleep after *that* one, I found myself living with Mrs. Wolfus No. 2 and her attractive and generally nice mother. We were in an older apartment with a gas heater in the bathroom that kept turning itself on. Not emitting gas without flame, which would have been really bad, but kindling into flame at random intervals. And MiL removed the bolt from the inside of the bathroom door, saying to have to bolt the door was "sexist."

Such be the logic (sic) of dreams. How is everybody this morning?

508 My coffee this morning is Cafe Bustelo, an espresso blend that can also be done drip-style, made weaker than I usually brew my coffee, with sweetener and whole milk. It's my day off from the workout routine ( I decided to go yesterday, and it was good). So, a small-ish pipe with a burley blend accompanies the coffee.
