So where is the general public in Australia on these new tech laws ? For or against ?

My desktop runs win10. Every update, it reminds me that my machine isn't able to upgrade to win11.
This makes me happy. Because microsnot would've *forced* it to "upgrade", had it been able. Posted by: JQ at September 14, 2024 04:23 AM (njWTi) 10
Good morning, good people. Welcome to the nightmare called Windows 11. Currently, even though W11 is 1 1/2 years out, the 2 systems (10&11) appear to be running concurrently, making navigation through either an adventure in frustration. W10 is attempting to run normally, W11 is berserk with promo ads and runs anywhere. Try it and see.

There are far too many in the oppress me harder, daddy demographic. I'm not sure of the numbers, but we did resoundingly reject adding woke racism into our constitution recently, so maybe it's not as bad as it seems. Posted by: Pixy Misa at September 14, 2024 04:28 AM (BLOW1) 14
12 Win10 is trouble enough. (I miss win7!)
No intention of ever running 11. Windows 11 is mostly okay if you jump through burning hoops during setup to disable everything Microsoft wants to shove at you, and add third-party software to address the most egregious failings. It's probably slightly better than 8.0, but worse than 8.1. Posted by: Pixy Misa at September 14, 2024 04:30 AM (BLOW1) 15

Well, If I'm going to have my 'beefy 5 layer burrito' for breakfast (note, not a breakfast burrito), those refried beans aren't going to refry themselves. Thank Gaia I made the meat mixture yesterday. Just have to mince half an onion, crush 3 cloves of garlic, soften in a pan, add two cans of Goya small red beans (canned beans are my cheat), including liquid. Crack in a little black pepper and mash to your consistency over lowish heat; additional water may be needed. Once you're happy with the consistency, add cilantro leaves and stalks (to be discarded later), turn off heat and cover. Slice some Kalamatas, grate come cheddar and jack. Plus sour cream. Roll that up in one of those large Mission brand tortillas, 8 to a package. Gotta go for now.

19 Just wonderin' but is your Constitution more of a contract with clauses that can be added or subtracted by mere legislation/popular vote?
Proposed amendments have to be voted on by the government, then be put to a referendum where they have to get a majority of the popular vote nationwide, plus a majority of the popular vote in a majority of individual states, so the more populated states can't steamroll the smaller ones. The last proposal failed to gain a majority in any state, which was reassuring. BREAKING: The Nelk Boys just formally endorsed Trump at the Las Vegas rally. Today's lineup of endorsers have over 200 MILLION followers between them across their socials, and many of the followers are voters between 18-30 years old If you're past 29 years of age you probably never heard of them. Nelk (stylized as NELK), also referred to as the Nelk Boys,[2] is a Canadian-American YouTube channel and entertainment company. Originally known for their prank videos, vlogs, and their brand Full Send Entertainment, they have since shifted to promoting right-wing political causes.[3] The group's founders, Kyle Forgeard, and Jesse Sebastiani, have been referred to as "two of the most recognizable personalities for young people in North America".[4] Anyway Trump received their endorsement in video below. https://is.gd/3vcb8A Posted by: Divide by Zero at September 14, 2024 05:04 AM (RKVpM) Posted by: Divide by Zero at September 14, 2024 05:06 AM (RKVpM) 45

Anyway, one of the Nelk Boys mentions that Walz put a '95% tax on Zyn' and I checked because I never heard of the stuff. It appears to be some sort of tobacco product. Walz also went after vape products with higher taxes. Lawmakers have been imposing measures to discourage its use too. "...have over 200 MILLION followers between them across their socials, and many of the followers are voters between 18-30 years old." Why should I believe that? We're discussing the price of cigarettes? My mother smoked Pall Malls for many years, and later went to cheaper brands. She used to send me down to the corner tavern when I was nine or ten to get her a pack out of the vending machine. Yeah, nobody cared. I never had any interest in ciggies despite having boyhood heroes like Ellery Queen and James Bond, both big smokers.
Pipe tobacco by comparison is quite a bit cheaper (for now, and in America. The stuff is horribly priced in Canada and Australia, and Europe too). You can buy a 1.75oz. packet of Sir Walter Raleigh for about $5 online, and more expensive blends from $12-20. Those will last for a lot of pipe sessions. Some companies get around the taxes by selling cig tobacco ("roll-your-own") as pipe leaf. I've never tried it and am not sure I should. My company is making everyone upgrade to Windows 11, and I did so last week. Company computer, so who cares. I can't speak for the processing power or whatever, but I find it to be somewhat worse. The UI is clunkier and is (IMO) clearly designed to cater to those who do everything in their lives on a smart device. Also, some third party software opens and runs noticeably slower.
Referring to the UI: My biggest issue is that if you get too close to the taskbar at the bottom, near an icon for an open window you have minimized, it 'helpfully' opens a thumbnail of that window so you can click on it. Trouble is I always have a lot of shit open so this literally just interferes with what I'm doing. Also, moving windows between screens often produces all sorts of jittery nonsense as it 'helpfully' tries to line it up with various... I don't know... organizing presets that it has built in. I had a client whose Peachtree 2000 server failed last week. They have been saying they are going to upgrade to the latest version of Peachtee (now Sage) for at least 10 years.
I was able to recover the data and setup an XP PC I had saved as the server. That should last them another 10 years or so, Posted by: fd at September 14, 2024 07:55 AM (vFG9F) 202

The thing is, Peachtree 2000 works just fine for them and they really don't want to change. I kind of feel the same way. Just because they come out with a new hammer doesn't mean you have to go buy one.

Laughter aside, it is amazing this is her first solo interview since deposing Biden Posted by: Huck Follywood at September 14, 2024 *** She's gotten overconfident, or her handlers have, since they think (with the media's aid) she trounced Trump in the debate. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at September 14, 2024 07:12 AM (omVj0) While it appeared that she won the "debate" at the time, it is becoming clear that she gave carefully rehearsed mini-speeches that did not advance her case. Plus, there are Democrats saying that they have suspicions that Harris knew the questions ahead of time. What are we talking about? 20,000 Haitians wreaking havoc in Springfield, OH. Lefties trying to counter "they're eating the dogs and cats" with "ACSHUALLY they've only killed an old woman and an 11 year old boy" is not the winner the Lefties think it is. Two nice things:
Finished loading the car at the grocery and was taking the cart back, when an old rancher across the way added mine to his cart, then a young man on his way into the store took them both away from him and returned them inside. I asked the owner of the cafe we get take-out breakfast from once a week if I could have one of their kraft delivery bags for a gift bag. When I explained it was for a young girl having a difficult time, she asked "Is it K?" Knew just who I was talking about. Posted by: sal at September 14, 2024 07:59 AM (f+FmA) 211

Puddings were disgusting for me: macaroni pudding, blancmange, rice pudding, bread pudding -- these were often burnt too. All came with at least a teaspoonfull of cinnamon powder on top, hence the terrible connotation. Macaroni, to an Italian, is served with a red meat sauce and pecorino or parmesan. Not with sugar! Loved the Shanahan vid on MAGA. Very creative people and a good fit for the non ronna rnc and PDT people. A lot of the stodginess has left the PDT campaign after the rnc people were replaced. Still love that PDT uttered they're eating our dogs and the rnc didn't apologize but capitalized on it. I'm sure that a lot of old style pubs have their panties in a wad, who cares.

And good morning all.
We saw "The Forge" last night. His try-out hearing aids weren't working well, so he bailed early, but I stayed to the end. The technical quality of faith-based films has really improved over the last decade or so. Plot-wise, they remind me very much of ordinary people movies of the 30's- 50's. I find them a bit heavy-handed at times but that could be the Catholic vs. Evangelical view. This is one of the best I've seen. Posted by: sal at September 14, 2024 07:36 AM (f+FmA) I was pleasantly surprised by The Forge. My Mother-in-Law (a very wonderful Baptist woman) wanted us to go with her. I'm Catholic and Mrs. Cop had converted before i met her. The plot device of a men's mentoring group felt rather Catholic to me. ------ I'm not sold on the "RNC" being a significant part of Trump's campaign. Same goes for most of the rank and file Republicans. The GOP in general has been pretty quiet... even after the 'debate' they've not had much to say. Whether that's because it's all Trump's crew doing the work or not is debatable. The fact remains that there's a large GOP contingent that's been dormant during this campaign. But, to your point, Shanahan has put out two? videos on X that have been far superior to anything the GOP ever did. Posted by: Martini Farmer at September 14, 2024 08:15 AM (Q4IgG) 229

Around here people just leave them in the middle of a parking space. Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh In Las Cruces the vagrants steal them. It got so bad the City passed an ordinance making it illegal to do that (not sure why standard theft laws weren't good enough). Because government meddling by definition makes everything more complicated the penalties for stealing a shopping cart consisted of community service or possibly getting an apartment. The second part of the meddling requires local business to submit a shopping cart plan that details deterring vagrants from stealing shopping carts and a recovery component once the cops found a shopping cart. Of course business are banned from finding their own shopping carts. Failure to submit a plan and keep it up to date will, of course, results in the businesses being fined. Personally, I would have solved the whole mess by repeatedly encouraging the vagrants to move to El Paso. Posted by: Altaria Pilgram at September 14, 2024 08:18 AM (LrWnf) 231

The cinnamon lead thing is a real problem; south american suppliers are cheating by adding lead to shipments to make weight. In some cases this has gotten into products on the shelf in sufficient quantities to cause acute lead poisoning in a single serving... last example I recall was cinnamon applesauce pouches for kids.
