Calling in a bomb threat's probably the only thing you realistically could do. You can't run around screaming that the building's about to be hit by a hijacked airplane; that would just result in security throwing you out.
I suppose you *could* do that for the South Tower; if you ran around on as many of the upper floors as possible doing that before the first plane hit the North Tower, it might freak everyone out and convince them to evacuate. But that doesn't help the people in the North Tower. Posted by: Dr. T at September 13, 2024 10:06 PM (lHPJf) 14

I’m revising my debate scoring. My first impression was a tie, which I called a Harris victory. But the only thing I recall about the debate today is “They’re eating the dogs.” Visual. Scary. Viral. Memorable. Repeatable. And directionally correct in terms of unchecked immigration risk. It’s the strongest play of the election. Trump won the debate. I gotta stop underestimating his game. Trump had no base hits in the debate but his long ball is still rising. Incredible. Posted by: andycanuck (CEzQx) at September 13, 2024 10:23 PM (CEzQx) 44

Heh. That HR letter about the beat-up car resonates with me. When I started working for the consulting company in 1999 or so, they nagged me that their consultants were supposed to have a pretty new truck to go to the rig with. I said, "Well, I have an old truck, but it's a 4X4, and I rebuilt all the important stuff, and whats more, I carry tools, and know how to fix it. Worst case? I call for a wrecker, tow it to the nearest town, and rent a vehicle to carry on to the rig. Your guy with the '99 Dodge Ram with the Cummins turbo-diesel, what does he do if 5th gear blows out in the tranny? He calls a wrecker, tows it to the nearest town, and gets a rental truck to carry on to the rig."
They never gave me any more hassle after that, because they had had that exact scenario happen with several of their guys with near-new trucks. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at September 13, 2024 10:33 PM (m0ILq) 57

They typically eat their sacrificial animals. This was a problem with the first wave of Haitians back in the 80s. Then, however, law enforcement actually enforced laws dealing with theft of pets, destruction of wildlife, and animal cruelty. So, it didn't last long. Today our toothless LEOS do not uphold the law and allow politicians decrees and a violent lumpen proletariat to win the day. Crimes are now "equally valid culture". This is Obama's fundamental transformation of America, which he means to kill off . Remember his walking around with Fareed's book, The Post American World. Hold on. Biden was quite dumb before physiological decline muddied the question. Glib and insufferably garrulous, but always dumb or near-dumb. Saw it first-hand for nearly 7 years in the Senate. Actually saw it first waaaaay back in 1981, in a different context. Obama was/is hilariously over-rated in the intelligence department, ditto for Clinton. The latter had some animal cunning, at least. These two weren't dumb, but they were/are nothing special, at all.

Jury duty here is like a visit to the world of Judge Dredd
Posted by: San Franpsycho I rarely get called in for jury duty. Since 1996, I've had to go in 4 or 5 times and never even came close to potentially sitting in that box. The closest was years ago when it was an eviction (I do LL/T law among other things), I knew the judge (as in he would know who i was by sight), and I knew the landlord's attorney casually. He saw me come in and asked if I wanted him to tell the judge he knew me. I said hell no. They'll send me back down to the jury pool room and with my luck, I'll get stuck on an asbestos jury (which would take weeks to months). They selected the jury by 4 pm without me and that was it for my yearly service. Posted by: SFGoth at September 13, 2024 10:54 PM (KAi1n) 94

Royal Navy rum ration was ended in July 1971. (you can still buy some of the surplus left when the change was made, a company bought it up and bottles it - not cheap)
Mt. Vernon, GW's estate, was named for Admiral Vernon, an RN admiral who is credited with organizing and systematizing the rum ration, which had sprung up organically in the fleet and varied quite a bit. It is the ritual of becoming a "Shellback" as I recall. Naval tradition was a day long hazing of all sailors ("polliwogs" )that had never crossed the equator in front of "Neptune"(Usually the Chief of the boat.) who submitted the said polliwogs to crawling through trash tubes filled with the scraps from the galley and oil spankings from the Chief Boatswain's Mates and then prostrating themselves on the hot deck in front of Neptune before finally being granted the status of Shellback. Enter Vice Admiral Edward Vernon — respectfully nicknamed “Old Grog” after a grogram cloak that he preferred to wear. He was revered and beloved for always fighting for better conditions for sailors in the fleet. But, he was struggling with a problem. As a result of his sailors getting undiluted rum twice a day, his officers were constantly dealing with drunkenness and disciplinary problems with their crews. He made a decision on how best to deal with these concerns. Vernon issued Captain’s Order No. 349 on August 21st of 1740 which stated that all rum provisions must be mixed with water. And those members of the crew “which... are good husbandmen may from the saving of their salt provisions and bread, purchase sugar and limes to make it more palatable to them.” Furthermore, the rum was to be diluted in the presence of a Lieutenant of the Watch on the deck in a scuttled (open) butt reserved for this purpose. This modification to their ration was nicknamed “Grog” after the admiral. Served twice a day with the call of “Up spirits!” the ship’s purser would deliver the ration until the practice was ended on July 31, 1970. Richard Jewell is a case study in why you never talk to the FBI -- even with a lawyer.
The FNM damned the movie that came out about that. There complaint was that the movie hints the FBI guy and the scumbag reporter woman were having an affair and they probably weren't - they were just working together to screw over Jewel with no reason to believe he was actually guilty. andycanuck I sit corrected. 1970, not 1971.
Another tentative self-correction. Yesterday I said the USS Connecticut lost track of its position while transiting the South China Sea, resulting in its collision with a seamount. Reading the heavily redacted report again, I'm a bit confused, as the main failures were in route planning, sounding (depth finding), and related procedures. I may be remembering an analysis of the report by an expert former bubblehead, who treated the prolonged and uncorrected continuation of the voyage even as sounding data indicated they were off course. Something like that. And they indeed hit an uncharted "bathymetric feature". There are surveyed/charted sections ("swept areas") even in this region, but report says navigators were unaware of this (!). Section of report completely omits what I clearly remember being discussed by analysts when it was released - the phone call that changed the San Diego-based commander's decision that the sub wasn't fit for deployment (call was with sub commander and overall boss in western Pacific). That part is kind of a big deal. Posted by: rhomboid at September 13, 2024 11:43 PM (GcNJ2) 181

sniffybigtoe I of course have no idea, but the report talks of two modes for the sounding system, one being "secure". I assume that is the passive mode. The report describes how the other mode was not used when sounding readings were getting squirrelly but also worrisome, and how the personnel running the boat at that moment didn't know of the CO's standing orders to use non-secure mode when safety was at issue. The boat/crew had serious issues even leaving here, but somehow got cleared to deploy - again, I recall a phone call from Pacific commanders to the sub commander here that got the boat out of jail. The number of "didn't knows" and "didn't informs" in the report, describing the crew's actions leading up to the grounding, are rather stunning.

On 9/11, my employer was planning to fire an employee who took a girlfriend to a work conference and then beat her up the last evening. However, the morning of 9/11, that same employee pushed a wheelchair bound coworker in building 5 out & down a nearby street. The employer was forced to recognize the good deed and keep the guy employed. It kept them both quite busy watching one another for years following. An 8 xing. (A walmart 2 in real life.) 23andMe to pay out $30m after biodata of 7MILLION customers stolen by hackers and sold on dark web Just a thought. The lefty media and Harvard mathematicians, plus all their supporters will say: $30 million spread out over 7 million then it's $4 million each. This type of payout calculation has been done before. Okay, we all know the phrase 'don't just sit there like a lump on a log'. Well, besides logs not being well known anymore, 'our least-favorite spammer' got me thinking (dangerous territory). So here's an update on the phrase: Don't just sit there like a cell phone in a bot farm.

"Don't drive your project cat to work"
LOL! Some years ago, a group of young coworkers *decorated* another employee's car (with his permission and approval) using cardboard, duct tape & spray paint... It was hilarious and awesome! They put on some fins and a hood scoop, and whatever you call that 'wing' apparatus on the trunk. Car was rattle-can gray & black anyway, so all the flat black painted cardboard just sort of looked right. Hahaha, we all gawked at it & admired their spirit. Silly kids. There aren't any haitians near here, AFAIK, thankfully. But if I were to find that *somebody* deliberately k*lled my Cat... I would be sure to avenge.

There used to be a website called the 'Riceboy Page' what was full of pics of beater cars (and some not-so-beaters) that were decorated with colored tape & fake accessories, that-- from a distance-- looked really cool. Hah!

You ain't gonna believe this, those Arabs you tried to report. Turn on the TV... Posted by: Itinerant Alley Butcher at September 14, 2024 04:47 AM (/lPRQ) 269
On 9/11--first thought was I've got 15 minutes to stop the other planes from taking off and 46 minutes to get the top floors of the towers evacuated. Does that make sense? Maybe not, as the first plane that did all the damage to cause the casualties. Surely the second tower was evacuated after the first plane hit as well? OK so I would call into flight control in Boston and tell them there's a bomb on flight 175. If there's time, I do the same for the flights out of Dulles and Newark, but the key to driving the death toll down is the towers.
Now the only thing to worry about is flight 11. Key is to get everyone in the building below the 91st floor--nobody survived above that. Need to convince security not to let anyone get in the elevators. Maybe tell lobby security there's a bomb on the 91st floor. Surely there must be security stationed in the upper floors that they could call to evacuate. If not I would go to the 91st floor and above, announcing free breakfast on the 89th floor. Seriously, free food is the one thing that gets people to move, even rich people. Posted by: Mad Max in VA at September 14, 2024 08:01 AM (IORSH) 270
