Gun Thread: Six Frickin' Years (Plus a Week) Edition!

091524 6 yr cake scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Last Sunday the 'ol Gun Thread was understandably interrupted by current events in the form of a second attempt on President Trump's life. In this case the assassin didn't take a shot, but rather helpfully had the barrel of his rifle sticking out of some bushes which was noticed by the Secret Service. Unburdened (this time) by the inherent danger presented by a 1 degree sloped roof, the agents started shooting and chased the guy off. He was later captured thanks to the quick thinking of an alert bystander who managed to get the license number of the getaway car. We should all be thankful PDT wasn't hurt or worse. Spicy time may be closer than we think, so stay alert. Anyhoo, last Sunday was the sixth Gun Thread Anniversary and I am posting the thread from last week belatedly tonight.

Holy Atomic Anniversary Shitballs! Six years! It's hard for me to believe really. I have tried to do my best to say it during each of the last 312 Sundays, but thank you from the bottom of my dark and shriveled little heart. This place wouldn't be the fun place it is without each and everyone of YOU!

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

TX MoMe Update for Volunteers
Yesterday I sent an initial email to those on the TX MoMe list of volunteers. If you have helped in the past or have expressed an interest in helping this year, please check your inbox. If you would like to help and have not received anything, please email me at gunthread at protonmail dot com. There is no way we could put on the show without a bunch of help and if you're able to lend a hand, we'd love to hear from you. Just let me know your name/nic and when you plan to arrive in Corsicana, and I will add you to future helper emails.

Also, hopefully by next Sunday I will have updates and additions to the scheduled events including a reloading demonstration by Oddbob and a presentation on suppressors and Short Barreled Rifles (SBRs) by Ed L.

Thanks!

Free TXMoMe Name Tag!
Late breaking bulletin from our pal TRex on the Hobby Thread:

Cybersmythe is wise in the ways of 3D printing and is offering name tags to any among the horde who are interested. For a limited time (as long as his enthusiasm lasts), Cybersmythe is making 3D printed name badges FREE OF CHARGE for Texas MoMe attendees. These badges will come with a magnet to hold them on and will include your name and the Ace of Spades logo. They look something like this:

FUNdamentals
A lot of you hombres and hombrettes like to shoot with red dot optics on your handguns. I find them a little distracting my own bad self, but there is no doubt they have become very popular.

Q: Weasel, what are the fundamentals of using red dot optics on a handgun?
A: I have no idea because I don't use them, but the watch-less guys in the following video have an idea.

Gun Thread Homework
Ok, hopefully you all remember the drill. Watch the following 21 minute video on a self-defense shooting and be prepared to discuss next Sunday. The guy does an excellent job of explaining exactly how the events unfolded and his thoughts throughout the course of events. Again, let's discuss next Sunday so everyone has an opportunity to watch and think about the circumstances. Please be prepared to give your thoughts on the encounter, anything the guy did right, and anything the guy did wrong and that you might do differently. It is a very interesting scenario and I look forward to an interesting discussion next Sunday.

Q: Weasel, should we discuss this tonight?
A: No, we will discuss this next Sunday

Guns of the Horde

Our pal and delightful 'ette misfitlibrarian shares a recent acquisition!

091524 misfit SA-35_1 scaled.jpg

091524 misfit SA-35_2 scaled.jpg

Recently I made an impulse purchase at a local gun show, a Springfield Armory SA-35. This is an updated version of the Browning Hi-Power and caused quite a stir when it was announced a few years ago. Jesse and I read about it, and he really wanted one, but they were unobtainable at the time.

If anyone is not familiar with them, here is a Hickok45 video:

I went to the gun show intending to look at shotguns, with no thoughts of SA-35s. But this caught my eye, I checked the price, casually strolled away to check some retail prices online. The price was better than any I'd seen, so it was a quick decision for me.

The SA-35 is chambered in 9mm and came with 4 15-round mags (and a very nice case with good mag storage). The barrel is 4.7 inches long. It's lighter than my Rock Island 1911, but has a very similar feel to me. The sights are pretty good, with a white dot on the front sight.

The next day I field stripped and lubed it. I found it considerably easier than my 1911 to field strip and especially to reassemble. No profanity was required to reinsert the slide stop. I performed a quick function check and did some penny drills to get comfortable and continue working on my trigger pull.

A week later I took it to the range for the first time. I used 124 grain ammo (as recommended by Duncanthrax). The gun performed absolutely flawlessly through 100 rounds. (The shooter, sadly, was merely adequate.) I didn't get any "hammer bite" but somehow managed to take off a bit of skin on my trigger finger - no blood, it was just odd to me. Otherwise it was FUN to shoot and felt great.

I had also brought the P365, which I hadn't shot in a long time, since I had plenty of 9mm on hand. I brought it out for 15 rounds to end my day. It was one of my better efforts with the P365, which is not saying a whole lot. Good enough that I didn't want to pitch it into the lake on the way back home.

The SA-35 is definitely going into the home defense mix, so my next goals include acquiring more 9mm defense ammo and the testing thereof.

No regrets on my impulse purchase.

Very nice misfitlibrarian! Thank you for sending this in for us all to enjoy!

Sig P938 v. Kimber Micro 9

Speaking of impulse purchases, "you people" will recall my recent purchase of a Kimber Micro 9. I had kinda-sorta been thinking of a micro 9 for a while, saw the nice shiny Kimber, and started clicking BUY like a monkey hopped up on 8 balls. A number of people asked why I bought the Kimber instead of a Sig, and I really didn't have an answer because not a whole lot of thought went into the decision in the first place. Anyhoo, I ran into a video comparison of the two and thought I'd pass it along.

What do all y'all think?

Texas MoMe Madness!

091524 hello-moron scaled.jpg

I'd like to bring to everyone's attention the upcoming MoMe in Texas on October 18-19. If you're in either the northern or southern hemisphere of the planet of the earth, you need to contact Ben Had for details. The dates and email links for MoMes are always helpfully included on the main page, left sidebar, so you really have no excuse!

There is an entire shooting program for both handguns and rifles over two days, world class food and drink, and the even world classier company of your fellow Morons! More on the Friday/Saturday schedule to come, so stay tuned.

Seriously, people. I have said this probably a bazillion times now. These gatherings are a really good time, and I know of no one who regrets having attended one. No kidding. Would your ol' pal Weasel lie to you? MoMe veterans will attest to the funness. Don't be a dork, do yourself a favor and get your ass to Texas! If you're a TXMoMe veteran, please encourage the scairdy-cats to join in the fun!

TXMoMe Shooting Festivities

091524 texas flag scaled.jpg

This seems like a good time to talk a little bit about the upcoming shooting program at the TXMoMe, or the Conservative's Burning Man, as it's popularly known. What started years ago as an informal plinking session lasting a couple of hours has matured into a full program of shooting activities over two days. I have to thank Ben Had, Cow Horse Queen and RancherBob for allowing the shooting to comprise such a significant portion of the TXMoMe. From a safety and organizational perspective, I think the shooting programs last year were the best so far, and we intend to generally run the programs the same way this year. We haven't lost anyone yet and I'd really like to keep it that way.

For a while I have been conducting a Rifle Clinic on Friday morning followed by range time Friday afternoon and then again well into Saturday. We have also been steadily refining the handgun portion of the program to now include an IDPA-esque move-and-shoot pistol course designed and run by Nurse R & WBG (WeaselBuddyGeoff). There is also the usual static pistol range for those who prefer that style of shooting and a separate setup for gun-curious beginners desiring one-on-one supervision and instruction. Lastly and by popular demand, we're hoping to add a gun cleaning and maintenance clinic both days which will run concurrently with the live-fire programs. I include this thing about gun cleaning each year and it never happens, but there is always hope. If one (or two) of you out there would like to be a huge help and take on the cleaning instructor's role, please let me know. We need someone who is safety oriented and comfortable field stripping and cleaning a variety of platforms.

Anyhoo, here's a very rough outline of the schedule of events. Times are tentative and subject to modification/change. I'll move this down to a TXMoMe section below in the coming weeks and update there as necessary.

Friday, 10/18

Rifle Program
8am - 10am: Rifle Clinic (carport)
10am - 11am: Combined Range and Safety Briefing - Mandatory for Friday Arrivals! (carport)
11:30am - 1pm: Rifle Clinic, Intro to Wind Estimation (rifle range)
1pm - 4pm: Live fire (rifle range - targets to 1,000 yds)

Handgun Program
10am - 11am: Combined Range and Safety Briefing - Mandatory for Friday Arrivals! (carport)
11:00am - 12:30pm: Handgun Clinic (carport)
1pm - 2:30pm: Static live fire (pistol range)
1pm - 3pm: A clean gun is a happy gun (carport)
2:30 - 4pm: Briefing and Move & Shoot live fire (pistol range)

Saturday, 10/19

Rifle Program
9am - 10am: Combined Range and Safety Briefing - Mandatory for Saturday arrivals! (carport)
9am - 1pm: Live fire (rifle range)

Handgun Program
9am - 10am: Range and Safety Briefing - Mandatory for Saturday arrivals! (carport)
10am - Noon: A clean gun is a happy gun (carport)
9am - 1pm: Live fire (pistol range)

Again, these times are approximate and programs may change as weather conditions and participation warrant.

You will note there are combined rifle and handgun range safety briefings both days and attendance at one is mandatory. We take your safety seriously and ask everyone who plans to shoot to please also plan on attending this important briefing. All shooters are asked to check in with an RSO (sporting an Orange Cap of Dorkiness for easy identification) upon your arrival at either of the ranges who will answer questions and direct you to an open firing position. The RSOs wield unspeakable power so it is in your best interest to be nice to them.

If you are a novice shooter, or even have never been to the range before and think guns are icky, you are welcome to shoot! Just see an RSO and they will set you up with an experienced shooter to help you. If you miss the mandatory range safety briefing which is mandatory and must be attended, all is not lost. See an RSO to plead your case, be harangued and chastised, and then spend some punishment time on the Disciplinary Range of Shame. In the interests of time and to save yourself the humiliation, please make it to the scheduled range briefings. Thanks.

Finally, please plan on stopping somewhere along your way to Texas and picking up some ammunition if you plan to shoot and aren't bringing your own weapons. Everyone is very generous with sharing, but please don't rely on the generosity of others to provide everything for you. You can really help out by grabbing a box of 9mm or 5.56mm or whatever you want to shoot.

Call for Volunteers
Help! As I mentioned above, the shooting program in Texas continues to grow, and we wouldn't be able to do it without a lot of help. If you're interested in lending a hand in some capacity, please drop me a note at gunthread at protonmail dot com indicating your date and time of arrival, and we'll be in touch. Thank You!

RSOs from prior years: Expect an email from me soon.

If you are attending the TXMoMe this year, and all the cool kids are, please keep an eye on this section for important information and updates in the coming weeks! I also want to reiterate the TXMoMe is not a gun thing with some socializing attached, but rather is a social thing with some shooting attached. If you aren't a shooter, I guarantee you will not feel out of place and will have a great time. No fooling!

Are all y'all getting excited? Weasel are!!

Cigar of the Week

rhomb 091524 scaled.jpg

This week our pal rhomboid scores again with this excellent review of the Montecristo Espada Oscuro

The Montecristo Espada Oscuro is a very nice looking cigar, with a dark brown and somewhat toothy wrapper leaf known as habano rosado oscuro. It's a Nicaraguan puro and construction is cosmetically perfect. The draw on the one I burned (called a "Quillon", basically a hefty churchill size, 7 X 56) was actually sort of tight, and needed some tool work to make it acceptable. When the (thick) smoke was flowing, it was a pleasant experience with what for me were consistent flavors throughout. Though medium-full in strength, there were light earth and leather, with appearances by chocolatey notes, and a basic sweetness the whole way. Burn line needed considerable management. It's one I'll try again, as I think tight draw and uneven burn are common variables from construction in these handmades, and the overall experience was very nice. Not giving them away, though, so not an everyday kind of cigar - you can find this stick for $10, and up, online.

Excellent, rhomboid! Thank you!

******

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

Cigarpage.com
Famous-smoke.com
Cigarsdaily.com

Nicks Cigar World New!

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Anyone have others to include? Perhaps a small local roller who makes a cigar you like? Send me your recommendation and a link to the site!

15 Though it pales against the general are-you-kidding-me absurdity of the public square today, and especially the ridiculous spectacle of an idiot like Harris running for preznit, it is amazing that she can make this claim about gun ownership without anyone demanding details. Apparently someone did ask a staff idiot, who said they didn't have details. Forget the likely made-up mendacious nature of the whole thing - Harris is the kind of person who should never get near a firearm. Her intelligence and judgment make her very unsuitable for such responsibility.

So, before the Gun Thread was preempted last week, I was gonna share that since MidwayUSA was having one of their sporadic free shipping on orders over $99.00, I ordered the Lee Challenger Breech Lock Reloading kit and some other stuff including a 4-die set in .45ACP, which all arrived this week. I've been going through all of the instructions, watching every video that I can find, and immersing myself in the Lyman Reloading Manual (51st Edition, no less.)

28 Just got to do some shooting out to 400 yards with my AR. Are folks here familiar with Project Appleseed? The basic offering is a 25 meter event, but that's where you build the skills that take you to longer ranges. One of the challenges of the long-distance event is the "cold bore shot" at 250 yards. Last time I attended this type of event, I missed - this time I hit it! - and shot the high score of the weekend, against more experienced long distance shooters. I am pumped! Time to work on my accuracy in the standing position, my weak spot, so I can improve my score.

On another note, my landlord is pursuing his NYC CC license and asked if he could use me as a character reference. I told him I would be more than happy to.
Unfortunately writing is not my forte. I can read it, I can speak it, but I suck at writing. You pretty much will never see a blog post by me here.
Thankfully he forwarded an example of a character reference letter that I will mimic.

I just might go down that path in the next few months and apply myself.
I know a bunch of you would loooove to be a character reference for me. ;-)

37 No Range Report (I took a brief fall vacation of 10 days - in Massachusetts. So packing, but light).
But, Bench Report!
I followed CBD’s advice and ordered a Geiselle Maritime Bolt Catch to replace the catch that broke on my PSA AR 10. I went to the bench to install it this am and discovered that the plunger and spring had self-launched when the original stop broke. Grrrr.
But this is the Internet Age. I ordered two sets from AR15 Discounts, as well as two sets of extractor springs. Should be here for next weekend.

38 Beautiful day (even by local standards) at the range this past week, but oddly quiet. Usually in Aug/Sep/Oct we get a bunch of guys with bolts and glass, non-members, showing up and taking 10-15 shots, and leaving (obviously hunters tuning up before their trips). This year, almost none of that, last month or this.

There was a Filipino-American dad who was there with his son last month. Son is a serious competitor and dad was testing various loads for major power factor. Father had some funny stories about peoples' reactions to his son competing in scary scary GUN! competitions. Goes with (this) territory, but still. Kid was there practicing last month, race guns of course, but dang he was good.

39 Earlier this week in one of the threads, we were reminded of a terrible drug scourge that was documented on the reality show Miami Vice.

That drug was Weasel Dust.

"My goodness, Duncanthrax, I've never heard of Weasel Dust. What should I watch out for?" you ask.

Good question. There are two primary symptoms of Weasel Dust exposure. The first is an obsessive focus on fundamentals, a focus that makes the most O of OCD people look like a zoned-out stoner. The second is a constant search for the next brass-powder-primer-projectile 'round' that will give you your next hit.

"My goodness, Duncanthrax, I may have been exposed. Is there any cure?" you ask.

Another good question. No. No, there is not. You simply must manage it the best you can. There will be a clinic in Corsicana toward the end of next month for those who are most heavily affected, however. See you there.

Speaking of the Model 686, there is a Model 66 in the family that I need to keep an eye on. It's stamped with the Indiana State Police logo. Not sure if that was something they did to service guns or if that was a special edition.

Posted by: haffhowershower at September 22, 2024 07:24 PM (NMT5x)

44 That "Beverly Hillbillies" video is depressing.

I used to be an okay skeet shooter, but haven't done it in years. Last weekend I did a couple of days of clays, and while I slung tons of lead, I broke about five clay pigeons.

A friend of mine (who kicked ass and took names) observed that clay shooting, more than most shooting disciplines, is a perishable skill.

I prefer to believe that rather than the reality, which is that I now suck at shotgunning.

This ongoing thread was instrumental in making me wake up and realize I was finally in a free state, and I could just go ahead and resume my long-neglected shooting hobby without first getting all pissed off about the hoops I'd have to jump through. 60 Hi Weasel and Congratulations. The Gun thread is the highlight of my week especially when I have been to the range and have something to share. Like today.
Yes I have been to the range and practiced fundamentals. I found if I concentrate solely on holding my arm steady, I hit the center of hte target. Imagine that. It did seem the G48 with the Holosun I kept shooting a little to the lower left while with the Kimber with the Vortex Viper I was right on target. Not sure if it is the trigger pull or if the sight needs to be adjusted.
Only four of us today, Ed L, Hrothgar, Iris and I. No wait again at the range which is great.

61 Van Owen, my two kopecks -

Don't know CFE Pistol but sure it's good - check to make sure there is load data for all the bullet types/sizes you think you might be doing in Gawd's Own Caliber. Or *other* calibers, if any, own and expect to feed by rolling your own.

HP38/W231 (same same) is an excellent, very versatile powder for most handgun calibers, if you're looking for something that has lots of good loads in many calibers. It's my basic powder for 38spl, 45ACP, and 9mikemike.

200g SWC is standard for me and many shooters. I'd say start with 230g plated (cheaper than FMJ, loads the same) for a few hundred rounds, then go to lead. Not really much different with lead. Though oddly, after years of loading 200g SWCs, only recently did I find I had to use the Lee Factory Sizing Die for proper chamber fit. Puzzling. Something amiss in my process now, but the Factory die fixes it, so for now I'm being lazy and just adding that extra step.

70 When I acquired my 1911XFull from Sig it came with only two 8 round magazines. CBD recommended going to Chip McCormick to order more mags, and so I did.
Ordered one 8 round and one 10 round.
Both came in a week ago and they are really nice. I think better than the Mec-Gar that came with the pistol. So, just to round things out I ordered another 8 rounder and another 10 rounder.

Now, I am looking at magazine pouches for the belt. My current one will not work as it is for double stack and the 1911 is single stack.

86 Van Owen, confirming what rhomboid said.
I started loading FMJ .45 ACP, then added Lead Round Nose, then 200 grain lead wad cutters.
The wad cutters make superior holes in paper.
I understand that some people use them as their defensive round, because they make superior holes in other targets.

87 28 Just got to do some shooting out to 400 yards with my AR. Are folks here familiar with Project Appleseed?

Yes - think it was Oct or Nov 2022, I did a standard 2-day Appleseed with my boys. It was exactly what I hoped for - a good way to have some formal instruction on the fundamentals of rifle marksmanship - some of which I knew from scouts, some new to me, all new to the boys. Standard means 25 yards with .22s, with targets sized appropriately. My oldest son and I both got our rifleman patches (I landed the Morgan's challenge also), younger son got close. The history lessons added a nice bit of background. HIGHLY recommend. I haven't tried any of the other Appleseed matches/sessions, but would like to. Doubt you'll be disappointed if you give them a try.

88 So I haven't been able to make the gun thread basically since getting a puppy. But right now she's gnawing on a bone, so I have a few min.

How's everyone doing?

I have been keeping up regular range trips. But tendonitis in my right arm has been a problem. My answer? Time to 'git gud' with left handed shooting and carrying and reloading. So I went through my gun collection, starting with my beloved Glocks and my guilty pleasure PSA Daggers and....they are not pure ambidextrous. Most can swap mag releases but that's it.

HOWEVER, my XD-9 DOES have ambi mag releases. So I bought a...sub-par IWB holster and have been carrying that daily for past three weeks or so. Doing lots of dry fire drills left handed and draw strokes left handed. I'm not fast and not great left handed, but I'm getting better. The best thing for me is the optic. A red dot really helps for weak hand shooting.

If you can get a hold of Stinky's Daddy at the TX MoMe, he can tell you how to contact S&W's historian. You'll need to give S&W the serial number and model of the firearm. S&W can tell you (for a fee) when that revolver shipped and to who. If it was the Indiana State Police who purchased it, S&W will be able to tell you that.

Easy peasy. Barely an inconvenience. Just complete this short quiz to determine your character.

1. Ginger or Mary Ann?
2. Onager or Trebuchet?
3. 9mm or .45 ACP?
4. Gaston Glock or John Moses Browning designed weapon?
5. (Bonus question) NZFrank's favorite beer?

121 Combination Gun and FWP comment.
Got a very good deal on an "AR10" variant in .308. Used, no box or papers. Got it home from the dealer and discovered the bolt would not lock back.
Field stripped the rifle, found the bolt latch was in a bind, and it needed to be removed and adjusted.
Whereupon I discovered that the manufacturer used a funky little screw/pin to attach the bolt latch, which the previous owner had apparently lost, so he had substituted an AR15 roll pin, and driven it INTO A BLIND HOLE.
There's no easy way to get that pin out, at least with the handtools I have. Guess I'll order a few spare parts and haul everything to a well equipped gunsmith. In the meantime, I'll just have to count rounds and avoid going dry at an inopportune time.

136 So, range report, slosa.org edition. My wife and I were deep in communist CA last week. However, I did not neglect my shooting duties and went to the local outdoor range. Pretty amazing, actually. Incredible range in the heart of anti gun country.

Anyway, like a doofus, I forgot my range ap and, due to packing considerations, didn't have my log book either. No matter, took the Savage out to 400 yards, easily. Well, not easily, as the benches were low and the targets high and it's difficult for this old guy to really get down behind a rifle on a low bench. Anyhow, after 400 yards, I came down on the 10" plate at 300 yards and banged it hard pretty much dead center. Still amazes me to think 300 yards is pretty much a nothing shot with the Savage any more.

All I can say is, if I could shoot a 1,000 yards under those conditions, I'd be pulling in +95 every match it was so still. I also confirmed I'm running a 290 yard zero on the rifle. I'd have to adjust the zero stop to get it so it's not ridiculously high @ 100 yards, but, since I don't really shoot the rifle that close in any more, I'm somewhat hesitant. I may defer to Weaselsan and his wisdom on this matter.

152 Six years. Damn, that is a lot of shit-balls.

ScubaDude, you must be shitting me, "I can't write."
If you hadn't told me, I'd have never known.
This is where all the moderan voice-text tech that I regularly mock (for its spelchekedness) can really come in handy. When I had scouts who had to compose a cogent paragraph for a merit badge presentation, and they were stumped at the picnic table holding a pencil and pad, I'd have them tell it to me. And I'd furiously half-ass shorthand everything they talked out, not correcting a thing. Then I'd take out the likes and y'knows, and hand it back to the scout to copy in his own hand. As Flaubert said, they'd been speaking prose all their lives!

Bet you can character-reference better than a boy scout.

157 118 Getting in a bit late but as Weasel mentioned up top, we're going to try to do a session for folks interested in getting started reloading. I'll let Weasel decide exactly when it will probably be some time Friday morning after the safety brief. I have it fairly well mapped out in my mind but my basic plan is to talk through the essentials as quickly as possible, do a demo where I load up a few rounds, then each participant goes through the same steps to load up a few, then we go to the range to test them out. I will bring everything needed but I sure wouldn’t mind having someone else with reloading experience to backstop me. If you’re willing to be that person, email me at the link in the nic and I’ll share what I have so far.

174 I own a Sig P938 and alternate it as a carry gun with my S&W 642 snubbie. I have comparatively small hands and the P938 practically melds to my grip. It's got snap on the recoil but that's a given with just about any compact at 9mm and above. Some people don't like that it's a single action but it compensates with the trigger, which is as crisp and clean a break as any 1911 platform, which its design is based upon. So yeah, good carry piece. I wouldn't get rid of it for anything.

Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at September 22, 2024 07:52 PM (VoAz3)

Yikes! Is the end of the roll pin flush with the blind hole, or does it stick out a little? Roll pins and slotted spring pins are made of hard spring steel, and drilling them is nigh-on impossible. If I were faced with that problem, I would try using my MIG welder to weld a washer to the stub of the pin, and use a slide hammer to draw it out. Not being able to see the pin in question, this may, of course, not be practical.

205 What Itinerant Alley Butcher said. Each powder manuf. has their own data tables, download them from the web. I print out all the relevant data sections for loads I use and keep them in a binder.

Sometimes you have to request specific data - in my experience the companies are great at responding to such requests. For example my standard powder for M1 30-06 loads now, TAC, had no relevant data in Western/Ramshot’s tables. Sent them an email, quickly received a full TAC/M1 data table from them.

Lyman’s a good manual - their 47th edition is my mainstay.

Knowing how the weapon functions and being able to operate it correctly has always made me feel more comfortable, and that usually translates to better shooting.

By the way, I shot five rounds of 90 grain frangible ammo through my 365 last weekend. I was was really surprised how soft shooting it was! No snap at all, and a real pleasure.

I don't know the ballistics (other than it was loaded to comparable 115 grain pressures), but if it performs well in gelatin I might switch to it as a self-defense round.

It's made by a small company in Wyoming.

They really are fantastic watches, and elegant but still masculine and mechanical enough to be sort of a gateway into nicer watches.

What's nuts is I just went to look up the model that I would give to friends and young men as a nice little present. They were $35-40 pre-COVID.

They're $200 now.

Posted by: Itinerant Alley Butcher at September 22, 2024 08:49 PM (/lPRQ)

Turning a roll pin doesn't get it out. No threads. Might loosen its grip to help on a straight pull. Ezy-Outs are very brittle, hard steel. If you snap one off in there, you have just compounded your problem. If you can weld a "handle" of some kind on the exposed end, you may be able to pull it out with a straight pull. This can be done even if broken off flush. You use a mask to prevent the weld wire from coming in contact with the parent part.

Yowzah.

80 years ago the last few days from Market Garden.

288 With all due respect to the people who shoot better than I do (and there are a lot of you), in self-defense scenarios the important thing is to aim center-of-mass. There are reasons other than lethality for that target...it keeps the misses to a minimum, and there will be misses. Aiming for the groin decreases the width and height of the target by a significant amount.

293 Yikes!
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at September 22, 2024 08:18 PM (oj/wz)

Pin is pretty much flush. And it is parallel to the bore, tight against the receiver wall, and 4 3/4 inches to clearance at the rear of the receiver, which means a tiny long drill bit. Getting a tiny E-Z Out into the interior of the pin won't be any fun either. Maybe I'll just have to learn to live with it.

306 99 MD Mike, congratulations. Sounds like you had a great time.

Be warned, though, next thing you know, your sons will be wanting to do some serious competition shooting. That way lies madness and an extra job to pay for stuff.

Blake, I hear you. Last year built up an AR in .223 wylde for precision - I need to try a 5-10 round group, jsut to make sure the errors weren't all working out in my favor, but had a 3 round group within about .5" - think it's a good build (my first). Plan is to try some high power matches with a little club at my range - they shoot at sized targets at 200 yds, so should be a good way to expand on the appleseed lessons.

Posted by: MD_Mike at September 22, 2024 09:07 PM (BouEL)

307 Can one get an EZ Out tool small enough to enter a roll pin? Relly small left hand threaded screw?

I'm assuming that the AR-10 in question is an Aero Precision* "enhanced" lower because I know they use that threaded pin. So I went and looked at mine. Bad news: drilling through is a no-go. There is a horizontal rib cast forward of the blind hole. Possible good news: there is fairly clear access to the hole from the rear. It's a damn tiny pin but if you could manage to thread it, maybe you could fashion the worlds' tiniest slide hammer from a long screw or piece of all-thread.

* As an aside, I know that's there's no actual standard for the AR-10 but Aero does a lot of "non-standard" stuff for no real improvement that I can tell.

But is it not in blind threaded hole?
So if one could turn the pin counter clockwise it should back out.
Just a couple things I would try before trying to weld on the roll pin.

Very manageable recoil, flat shooting to 50 yards, accurate as hell.

I'll disagree, as far as this: You're right, insofar as the recoil being objectionable in and of itself, in the middle of an altercation. I'll differ though, that when said recoil becomes a direct interference to producing well aimed follow up shots, then the choice/combo of gun, fit, weight, loading (and yes, recoil) was not conducive to Best Results in a hostile encounter.

345 >>> 28 Just got to do some shooting out to 400 yards with my AR.

364 So, being maths-challenged, I ask what year was the MudMoMe? I think was year before GunThread? Or no?

Non-authoritative answer: my first MoMe was 2020 and I heard stories about "last year" so I think it must have been '19.

Absolutely agreed. We had a whole big discussion on that some time ago.

2016 was the first so 10 is next year. I *think* it was year two that was the mud MoMee, but I do recall it was at Ben Had's place so it couldn't be any except II or III.

Long enough that I'm used to it. Expect it, in fact.

Speaking of the Model 686, there is a Model 66 in the family that I need to keep an eye on. It's stamped with the Indiana State Police logo. Not sure if that was something they did to service guns or if that was a special edition.

Interesting. I have one stamped "Iowa State Patrol". I bought it from a dealer at a gun show who said he got it when the State Patrol converted from revolvers to autoloaders. He had half a dozen of so of them on the table, I picked out the nicest one of the bunch. He said they had been carried by plainsclothes investigators.

I guess I am getting ahead of myself! We should designate a TXMoMe Historian and Keeper of Records.

379 Over 6 years and no gun deaths? With all the high power models talked about? Liberals are quite sure it's impossible.

381 Was fixing something for someone last night (rebuilding a set of very worn out dentures) and completely missed the gun thread. Good morning everyone and thank you Weasel!
