Daily Tech News 10 September 2024

Top Story

  • Apple's iPhone 16 is one more than the iPhone 15. (Ars Technica)

    One more button.

After taking the buttons away, Apple put one back.

  • I've ordered the Calliope Mori and Amelia Watson Hyte Y40 Hololive Limited Edition cases that I've been chasing for the past year.

Hyte now offers international shipping... By air. Which for something as large and heavy as a PC case costs as much as the case itself.

And these are already expensive enough.

The local distributor - there is only one supplier of Hyte cases in Australia - finally has them listed. Price is a straight conversion from USD to AUD (and since that includes sales tax that makes them slightly cheaper), and the shipping cost is about 10% of what Hyte wanted to deliver by UPS.

Tech News

  • The MSI Prestige 13 AI+ Evo is almost a good laptop. (Liliputing)

It has the mid-tier Intel Ultra 7 258V, 32GB of RAM, a 1TB SSD, a 13.3" 2880x1800 OLED display, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, one USB port, HDMI, a headphone jack, a microSD slot, and two of the Four Essential Keys.

    So close.

Also, the upcoming Lunar Lake chips are basically all identical except for one thing. If the number ends with 6, it comes with 16GB of RAM; if it ends with 8, 32GB. (The RAM is soldered on to the CPU package, the same way Apple does with all of its chips.)

They all have 8 CPU cores. The cheaper models have 7 GPU cores while the more expensive ones have 8. And they all have a 37W peak TDP.

There's very little point in paying for a more expensive model; just make sure you get one with enough RAM.

  • Apache Cassandra 5.0 is here and it has indexes. (Datastax)

It's a database. You might think that indexes are something a database should have long before it hits 1.0. You would be right.

  • API complexity is a lie. (API Changelog)

Horseshit. You must be trying to sell me something.
This article is brought to you with the help of our supporter: Speakeasy.
Speakeasy provides you with the tools to craft truly developer-friendly integration experiences for your APIs: idiomatic, strongly typed, lightweight & customizable SDKs in 8+ languages, Terraform providers & always-in-sync docs. Increase API user adoption with friction-free integrations.
    No. I don't think I shall.

  • Crowdstrike hopes its customers won't sue it into oblivion. (The Register)

    I hope they will.

6 So yesterday's colonoscopy went well.

Did find some damage from the radiation treatments last year, but using a laser, they were able to do whatever they do when they find stuff like that.

And using science and math, I was able to determine from the prep process that I was only .623% fecal matter, by weight.

A far less percentage than most politicians.

7 Evening and morning to all the far-flung outposts of the AoSHQ Empire! Stay strong, all!

Thanks to the hurricane, it looks like I might have Wednesday off! That is, I'd be supposed to work from home. If need be, I'll pretend I didn't have power off-and-on Wed., and I can play catch-up on Thursday. (Of course, if I really do lose power, it won't be much fun. One of the major reasons I want to flee this place is this "game" of dodging whirling storms.)

12 Techie issue: Cell phone coverage.

I live on the outskirts of town. There was a community function last weekend, drawing thousands of people to our little area what is served by only one (or two?) cell towers.

Yep, no- or pi$$-poor cell service for the duration of said *function*

This is why we keep a landline-- in case of emergency.

At T-45, they make the decision to load (sub-cooled) propellant. That commits them. If they can't launch, they'll have to scrub.

20 "sounds like good news. I’ve got to schedule mine,"

Oh, it definitely was good news.

This deep dive was triggered by a positive hit with the Cologuard type Poop-on-a-stick the other month. So there was some apprehension going into it, specially after two months of radiation treatments right in that area last year.

They found and removed one polyp, and pending the biopsy results, everything should go back to an every 7-10 year scheduling.

Ah, when I have a porch or back yard . . .

Stirling's big thing is spotting wasps. About five times he's done that in time for me to kill the thing (and give him a treat) before it could reach me. He's more than paid for himself in that alone.

Yes, I have a oven exhaust vent, and that was mostly where I was seeing them. There's a screen on the bottom of the pipe. I went in and taped up the gaps where it passes through the cabinet above. So if they get into the pipe, I'd think they'd have to stay in it. Clever little buggers.

I suppose they might get in through the central air passages.

I got the chance to watch a hummingbird dogfight the other week. A breeding pair claimed a patch of trumpet vine out back, and they were chasing off some interloper coming in for a snack... pretty crazy how territorial this little things are.

That never ceases to impress me -- turn the booster ass end first, burn a bit to slow down, then land on a tiny little platform floating in the Atlantic.

When I was a kid, vertical landings were a thing of pure science fiction, now they are reality. I never get tired of watching these.

Also, the names of the landing pads (autonomous spaceport drone ships) make me smile each time one is mentioned:

One would think so. To realize that chaos and disorder decided to somehow accidentally arrange itself into something so magnificent? It must be extremely confusing and disheartening to see that for oneself and understand there's no point in life or what comes after.

If you don't have one, a little jump box is a really useful thing to maintain, too. Not necessarily for you (although sure if you need it) but if someone needs a jump you don't have to tangle with cables and risk your electronics or battery exploding if something goes bad.
