Gun Thread: Second September Edition!

090824 calendar scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Shitballs! How in the ever-loving Hell did it get to be the second Gun Thread of September?! The observant among you will notice I am experimenting with a new calendar format for the month, and this example has the date in the lower right corner of the boxes. I make this sort of extra effort on your behalf to keep the ol' thread new and fresh and lively and interesting.

Q: Weasel, do you like the dates in the lower right corner of the date boxes?
A: No. No I do not.

Call me a calendar format traditionalist, or even a calendar format purist, but I feel strongly the number belongs in the top half of the box, preferably on the top right. I will abide by placement in the top left, but my calendar format preference is to have the number in the top right of the box. I am going to leave this retarded calendar abomination included for this edition only to serve as a reminder that change is bad.

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

Guns of the Horde

Our pal RedMindBlueState recently went on a cruise in Alaska and shares these photos of a museum he visited.

090824 rmbs gatling gun scaled.jpg

One of the stops on our Alaska cruise was Ketchikan, where some of our cousins live. After they had taken us for a tour around town, knowing that I'm a shooter, they brought us to a little place called Alaska Totem Trading, just south of Totem Bight State Park. It's part gift shop, part museum, and they wanted me to see "the Gatling gun." Inside, there was a very large room containing not one, but two Gatling guns. But in addition, the walls were lined with a fortune in rare and historical firearms, to include Civil War era Henry and Spencer rifles, a 17th century rifle made for the King of Iceland, a Maxim just leaning in a corner, and another long gun given to a Russian Orthodox priest by Samuel Colt. The museum also had some beautiful old cars including Model T and Model A Fords '34 Ford V8. It was a fun visit.

AR Platform Review
Our pal Ed L shares a great video.

In this video, the 1911 Syndicate guys give an overview of the AR-15 platform by price range, ranging from entry level to Gucci ranges. One key thing they point out is cost does not equal "better." You as the buyer need to find the balance between cost, features, and what you want the rifle to do.

Thanks Ed L!

Texas MoMe Madness!

090824 hello-moron scaled.jpg

I'd like to bring to everyone's attention the upcoming MoMe in Texas on October 18-19. If you're in either the northern or southern hemisphere of the planet of the earth, you need to contact Ben Had for details. The dates and email links for MoMes are always helpfully included on the main page, left sidebar, so you really have no excuse!

There is an entire shooting program for both handguns and rifles over two days, world class food and drink, and the even world classier company of your fellow Morons! More on the Friday/Saturday schedule to come, so stay tuned.

Seriously, people. I have said this probably a bazillion times now. These gatherings are a really good time, and I know of no one who regrets having attended one. No kidding. Would your ol' pal Weasel lie to you? MoMe veterans will attest to the funness. Don't be a dork, do yourself a favor and get your ass to Texas! If you're a TXMoMe veteran, please encourage the scairdy-cats to join in the fun!

TXMoMe Shooting Festivities

trex 090824 range layout scaled.jpg

This seems like a good time to talk a little bit about the upcoming shooting program at the TXMoMe, or the Conservative's Burning Man, as it's popularly known. What started years ago as an informal plinking session lasting a couple of hours has matured into a full program of shooting activities over two days. I have to thank Ben Had, Cow Horse Queen and RancherBob for allowing the shooting to comprise such a significant portion of the TXMoMe. From a safety and organizational perspective, I think the shooting programs last year were the best so far, and we intend to generally run the programs the same way this year. We haven't lost anyone yet and I'd really like to keep it that way.

For a while I have been conducting a Rifle Clinic on Friday morning followed by range time Friday afternoon and then again well into Saturday. We have also been steadily refining the handgun portion of the program to now include an IDPA-esque move-and-shoot pistol course designed and run by Nurse R & WBG (WeaselBuddyGeoff). There is also the usual static pistol range for those who prefer that style of shooting and a separate setup for gun-curious beginners desiring one-on-one supervision and instruction. Lastly and by popular demand, we're hoping to add a gun cleaning and maintenance clinic both days which will run concurrently with the live-fire programs. I include this thing about gun cleaning each year and it never happens, but there is always hope. If one (or two) of you out there would like to be a huge help and take on the cleaning instructor's role, please let me know. We need someone who is safety oriented and comfortable field stripping and cleaning a variety of platforms.

Anyhoo, here's a very rough outline of the schedule of events. Times are tentative and subject to modification/change. I'll move this down to a TXMoMe section below in the coming weeks and update there as necessary.

Friday, 10/18

Rifle Program
8am - 10am: Rifle Clinic (carport)
10am - 11am: Combined Range and Safety Briefing - Mandatory for Friday Arrivals! (carport)
11:30am - 1pm: Rifle Clinic, Intro to Wind Estimation (rifle range)
1pm - 4pm: Live fire (rifle range - targets to 1,000 yds)

Handgun Program
10am - 11am: Combined Range and Safety Briefing - Mandatory for Friday Arrivals! (carport)
11:00am - 12:30pm: Handgun Clinic (carport)
1pm - 2:30pm: Static live fire (pistol range)
1pm - 3pm: A clean gun is a happy gun (carport)
2:30 - 4pm: Briefing and Move & Shoot live fire (pistol range)

Saturday, 10/19

Rifle Program
9am - 10am: Combined Range and Safety Briefing - Mandatory for Saturday arrivals! (carport)
9am - 1pm: Live fire (rifle range)

Handgun Program
9am - 10am: Range and Safety Briefing - Mandatory for Saturday arrivals! (carport)
10am - Noon: A clean gun is a happy gun (carport)
9am - 1pm: Live fire (pistol range)

Again, these times are approximate and programs may change as weather conditions and participation warrant.

You will note there are combined rifle and handgun range safety briefings both days and attendance at one is mandatory. We take your safety seriously and ask everyone who plans to shoot to please also plan on attending this important briefing. All shooters are asked to check in with an RSO (sporting an Orange Cap of Dorkiness for easy identification) upon your arrival at either of the ranges who will answer questions and direct you to an open firing position. The RSOs wield unspeakable power so it is in your best interest to be nice to them.

If you are a novice shooter, or even have never been to the range before and think guns are icky, you are welcome to shoot! Just see an RSO and they will set you up with an experienced shooter to help you. If you miss the mandatory range safety briefing which is mandatory and must be attended, all is not lost. See an RSO to plead your case, be harangued and chastised, and then spend some punishment time on the Disciplinary Range of Shame. In the interests of time and to save yourself the humiliation, please make it to the scheduled range briefings. Thanks.

Finally, please plan on stopping somewhere along your way to Texas and picking up some ammunition if you plan to shoot and aren't bringing your own weapons. Everyone is very generous with sharing, but please don't rely on the generosity of others to provide everything for you. You can really help out by grabbing a box of 9mm or 5.56mm or whatever you want to shoot.

Call for Volunteers
Help! As I mentioned above, the shooting program in Texas continues to grow, and we wouldn't be able to do it without a lot of help. If you're interested in lending a hand in some capacity, please drop me a note at gunthread at protonmail dot com indicating your date and time of arrival, and we'll be in touch. Thank You!

RSOs from prior years: Expect an email from me soon.

If you are attending the TXMoMe this year, and all the cool kids are, please keep an eye on this section for important information and updates in the coming weeks! I also want to reiterate the TXMoMe is not a gun thing with some socializing attached, but rather is a social thing with some shooting attached. If you aren't a shooter, I guarantee you will not feel out of place and will have a great time. No fooling!

Are all y'all getting excited? Weasel are!!

Cigar of the Week

090824 rhomb Oliva Serie O Maduro scaled.jpg

This week our pal rhomboid scores again with this excellent review of the Olivia Serie O Maduro

Oliva is rightly celebrated for their wide-ranging catalog of quality cigars, and their moderate pricing. One of their longest running and best values is the Serie O, a basic habano-wrapped stick that delivers a lot of value. I reviewed that one here long ago, today I take a look at its brother the Serie O Maduro (robusto, 5X50). It's a handsome dark chocolate colored stick with a slight toothy wrapper, that wrapper being a US-sourced Connecticut broadleaf. Nicaraguan binder and fillers lie inside.

For me this was a maduro dominated by earth and wood notes - with just a bare hint of bitter chocolate at times - and not the overall sweetness and cocoa flavors I find in many maduros. It kept this pleasant mix of flavors throughout. Smoke was ample. Burn line alternated between razor straight and needing some attention. True to form for Oliva, this nice cigar is not expensive. They can be found online for $5 (and along with other Oliva offerings, often for even less, when on sale and in bonus packs or samplers).

Excellent, rhomboid! Thank you!

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

Famous-smoke.com

Neptunecigar.com
Smallbatchcigar.com
Bobalu Cigar Company

Nicks Cigar World New!

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Anyone have others to include? Perhaps a small local roller who makes a cigar you like? Send me your recommendation and a link to the site!

19 Nice pics RMBS. What was the make and model of the green car? I like that style. Oh, and I liked that Maxim just leaning against the wall. :-)

There is a range report.
Went with my nephew and his cousin to the range on Friday and met up with CBD for a bit.
Took my newest acquisition for spin. Sig Sauer 1911XFull in .45 with a red dot. Put around 90 rounds down range getting a feel for it. And I LOVE it.
Being it is single stack it fits my hand soooo much better. It is a SAO only and the trigger felt great. CBD felt a little creep in it but I was not noticing. :-) CBD also noticed I had some tension in my thumbs that was effecting my accuracy a bit. Something I will need to work on.
But the firearm performed flawlessly and I am quite satisfied with it. I hope to hit the range once more before Texas in October and I need to get more .45 ammo. Might make a trip to Cabela's in PA for that.

33 Scuba, I am not current on CMP offerings, but both my M1s are Service Grade, and they’re very nice.

I followed advice of long time CMP customers and attached a sticky note to my paperwork requesting GI wood, and both stocks are beautiful. Dark, 1950s provenance (like the receivers), just enough dings and wear for “character “.

Keeping in mind that I am a zealot, I say you can’t go wrong getting an M1 from CMP. Again, not what’s changed if anything, but Service Grade is a good deal. The other traditional sticky note request is for a WWII receiver. Not sure if those “secret menu” items still work.

If you navigate from the main page to the M1 Garand web page (via the link), you should see a link for "Ordering Information." You should see everything you need to know about how to order. They do warn you that it could be MONTHS before they can fill your order. For that reason, credit cards are preferred - the charge doesn't hit your card until the rifle ships.

They changed that some years back for Veterans. A DD 214 satisfied the gun club requirement. Having said that, my information is from decades back and they could have changed it again. It's best to check the website for up to date requirements.

42 I was able to put a total of about 300 rounds through the (relatively) new SA-35 this week. It digested everything I fed it without a hiccup. I was still having trouble mastering the trigger, though, until I took a step back and did some analyzin'. It has a long reset. I was allowing the trigger to go past the point of reset, all the way to the end of travel, and the pad of my finger was actually coming off of the trigger. Once I realized what I was doing, I made corrections, and my trigger press and control improved substantially. I still find myself slapping the trigger occasionally unless I really concentrate. Fundamentals for the win!

45 Hi y'all.

cost does not equal "better."
This is true. And, even beyond "what you want the gun to do" an issue is "How well can you shoot?"

This isn't to say that you should accept crappy shooting and just buy cheapo firearms. But, spending $15,000 on an AR barrel that can shoot .1 MOA at 1,000 yards is kinda silly if you can't even shoot sub-3-MOA groups on the 50yd range. If you improve to the point that you feel like your weapon is your limitation, then feel free to move on up, as George Jefferson would say. But your fancy scope and expensive barrel aren't going to help you if your fundamentals don't point the gun where it needs to be and smoothly operate the mechanism.

I think there was a movie or tv show where someone was complaining (probably a cop or military person) who was complaining their firearm was inadequate. The boss/hero walks up, takes their weapon and casually and rapidly shoots out the bullseye. Then hands it back and walks away, saying, "Nope. The gun's fine."
(I want to say at least one occurrence was a John Wayne film about WW2.)

I did not do that and got a brand new unblemished stock. I made every scratch on it. It's a beautiful stock but I would like to have an original one.

I've tried to darken it by various methods but it's no where near what a 50+ year old one would be.

50 That Aganorsa fire was unfortunate, but they’re one of the largest growers of leaf in the world, so they should be OK. Not of direct interest for me, but wonder if the huge storm damage in Cuba’s Pinar del Rio province (main tobacco area) a few years back is now affecting production and prices there. 65 Our host Weasel has endured a string of misfortunes recently:

1. He broke some structural elements in his foot, and is now clomping around in an ill-fitting boot.

2. This weekend, he attempted to pilfer some of WW's secret fudge stash. The karmic retribution was to pull loose a crown while masticating the fudge. For those who have lost a crown, this is not a pleasant experience.

3. Concerned about additional karmic visitations arising from further fudge snatching, he attempted to indulge himself from FSJ's treat stash. This blatant and brazen act was nipped in the bud by a single bark from FSJ, who is now giving Weasel the stink eye. For those less familiar with Chihuahuas, their eyes appear to bug out a bit, making for a truly stinky stink eye.

The Food Thread comment count is currently at 289.

Given all of the above, what Weasel DOES NOT need right now is yet another 0700 hrs Zoom call from an agitated and cranky Ewok. Comment as if Weasel's mental stability is on the line.

Because it is.

It was Gatling himself who came up w/ the idea of replacing the hand crank with an electric motor to achieve a 3,000 rounds per minute rate of fire - in 1893. So, today's Gatling weapons are simply refinements of what the man himself did first over a century before now.

76 So, range report: 1,000 yard steel match and 500 yard KYL match.

I failed at both, badly. 1 hit on the thousand yard target and 0 on the 500 yard KYL rack. I finally realized, after I was done, I used data for 500 meters, not 500 yards on the KYL rack. I figured out pretty quickly I was high, but, couldn't find the correct elevation. But, that's how things go some days.

But, redemption did happen. Some of us got got together, put some bucks in a pot and went head to head shooting a dueling tree @ 500 yards. Targets were 6" plates. Yeah, I took their money. Well, half the money. The other half went to the range. Pretty cool beating two guys shooting 300 PRC with the trusty .06.

From recent personal experience....

First, spend time looking at the paperwork and understanding it. Yes, you will have to pill out actual PAPERwork. (Send via certified mail!)

Second, you have to find the list of weapons available, which it seems you did. Read the descriptions really carefully. But, generally, the more expensive, the more "original" they are. The one I got was Expert Grade, and it appears to be an almost new rifle, with new stocks and such.

Also, double-check limitations on NY. CMP ships directly to your home (hence the paperwork - they do your background check there, instead of an FFL) and NYC might have conniptions about that.

Watch for a FedEx notice. They never emailed me about receipt of the paperwork or anything. Just one day I got a FedEx notice, and a few days later they delivered it (and it requires signature). 1/2

Post WWII, the first experiments of Project Vulcan (which eventually produced the M61 Vulcan cannon) involved dragging an old Gatling gun out of museum storage, attaching a belt from a modern electric motor to turn the crank, and attempting to duplicate what Gatling did over 50 years before, but with more modern equipment. After that proof of concept, everything afterward was really refining the new weapon to fit in modern jet fighters.

129 1/2 An on topic discussion.
Took the once-accursed Glock (long story) to the range for DaughterH to try out. Whilst attempting to demonstrate the Glock essential, I had a failure to feed. This was after several magazines worth of zero problems. Good training diversion, so I cleared the weapon, ejected the mag, examined the cartridges for duds, found none so reloaded the magazine, and voila, encountered yet another feed problem. A cursory inspection did not indicate an obvious magazine, but I retired it from range use and the Glock kept on doing fine with other magazines and same ammunition.

Maybe for a reloader. Or if you know a reloader. Any "exotic" round should be looked at in terms of buying a bunch of brass and reloading for the rest of your life using it. Or so people hereabouts tell me.

(I have a certain amount of caliber creep I'm aiming for, then no more.)

138 Posted by: blake - semi lurker in marginal standing (tT6L1) at September 08, 2024 07:58 PM (tT6L1)

Yep. The USAF had to go to linkless ammo because the links jammed the gun after the rounds were stripped from them. That's the reason why today's Vulcan cannons are M61A1s, not M61s. Also, the early installations of the gun on the F-4s in Vietnam weren't properly tied into the Phantom's gunsights. Shooting the Vulcan meant the pilot literally had to "spray and pray" in a dogfight w/ MiGs. Some F-4 pilots would mount as many as three gun pods on the F-4's hard points to increase their firepower and the odds that a 20mm shell would connect with their quarry. That's not an F-4 I'd want coming after me on a strafing run.

Posted by: Ed L at September 08, 2024 08:08 PM (yRXSd)

139 2/2 The lesson from last week was that good mags are cheap at the price, as you do not want to be playing games with a failure to feed when under duress.
An aspect of this lesson that was reinforced to me was that numbering (or uniquely marking) magazines is a worthwhile use of your time, as it makes it easy to sequester a potentially bad mag for later analysis.

140 Good evening gubthreaders and all the ships at sea. I am late to the festivities as I was doing an acetastic activity, building shelves. And not just knocking together some Ikea product.

Well, actually, it was Ikea product. But it got repurposed from one location to another and the width was just a little too narrow for one of the shelf extensions, and it used a very particular end cut and Ikea only bracket that I had to replicate when shortening the shelves.

But the shelving is done (Narrator: the shelving is never done.) and now onto gun stuff.

(Oh, part of this shelving rearrangement is to make some space for an actual, bigger gun safe, so this post is gun adjacent.)

144 Did anyone buy into the .224 Valkyrie round or the current 360 Buckhammer?
I looked long and hard into the 224 Valkyrie , it seems like a cobbled together operation and all the guys I watched build them seemed to have problems making them shoot well. When the 22 ARC came out it was right up my alley. Like the Creedmoor's, PRC's and the 6mm ARC the new Hornady systems are designed from the ground up and just work, right off the bat. I have 2 24" 22 ARC's and can't say enough good about them!! At 600 yards they're right between my 6 Creedmoor's and my 6.5 Creedmoor's. That is spectacular for an AR-15 peashooter!!

Too late to become a founder, but one can become an APEX member. The initiation fee is a mere $10,000. And then the monthly fee is $300. Of course there are lots of goodies that go along with it but YIKES!

Well, it does afford one access to their cigar lounge, so there is that, I guess.

They had some decent if a bit odd kit - a P365X with a compensator on an XL frame, a CZ 75 P01 Phantom or Stealth or something, a CZ P07, and a P80 Glock clone.

Young people. Who were not in the military. Who grew up playing video games. Literally one of the guys got into shooting because he had played video games, done Airsoft, and figured it was time to "move up."

As to everyone who asks, I would say "Go to the gun range and rent some handguns. Figure out what you like and don't like. Decide if there are features you need or really want (like a revolver, or a tip-up semi) and decide on caliber. And don't necessarily scrimp to get a knock-off, though a bunch of knock-offs are really good."

As to a long gun, what are you planning on doing with it? Sports, hunting, or defense use? From there the decision tree branches a few more times. If you're wheelchair-bound, you will want something you can use with a shooting stick or tripod.

201 I told the guys how the one hole drill works, we start at 3 yards, go to 5, then 7, then 10, then 15. Trying to hit the same hole. I said its good to start at 3, because if you can't hit the target at 3 you need some work.

Well.

At 3 yards they were all over the place on the paper. Oh my. So we stayed at 3 a bit. I watched them shoot, and since I am old seasoned trained in the way of the weasel I had them work on their fundamentals. Grip. Stance. Breathing. Trigger placement.

They got better. A little.

The guy with the P365 said "I haven't zeroed this yet" - it was iron sights so okay. I picked it up and put 5 into an area about the size of a 50 cent piece. Did the same with their CZs. The guns were good shooters. Their owners, however, not so much.

And I am not that good, but they think I'm a badass, so I have that going for me. 3/x

You might have to turn off your phone while you're moving around, on foot, in a car, via public transportation, anything. It's far too easy to get lost in your phone and lose situational awareness about what's going on around you. I've seen people in DC get so engrossed in what they're doing on their phone that they'll step into traffic without realizing that the cars have the green light, not them.

Then I introduced them to the Extar EP9. It's a pistol, right? Put the target out at 10 yards and they were hitting bullseyes consistently, even moving around on the target that had 5 bullseyes on it. Those guys were GOOD shooting it.

One of them is already on the Extar waiting list. 4/4

216 Also, I screwed up and missed the last gun thread until it was too late. Bad news since it covered a very relevant topic for me.

Better late than never. I just wanted to say thanks again to everyone who answered my questions a few weeks back or so on replacing Glock mags. It took a surprising amount of digging on the web to get a straightforward answer on which mag(s) fit my Gen 2 Glock 21. Turns out Glock made everything backwardly compatible, i.e. Gen 3 mags fit Gen 1 and 2, Gen 4 mags fit 3, 2 and 1. Then Glock broke the chain at Gen 5 and those mags don't fit older models.

So, got a couple of Gen 4 13 round mags and they fit beautifully. Happy days are here again.

4. Scrub the bore thoroughly with copper fouling remover. I've rescued a couple of shot out rifles just by getting the copper plating out of the bore.

227 Today the bi-weekly DMV MGC and Mini-Mome met at our regular range. Iris, swa, Hrothgar, DaughterH, Ed L., sra blaster and myself in attendance. Ed L. brought an interesting piecea B&T fold up something or other that uses the fire control unit and slide from a P320. It was a cool piece of kit. Iris brought her EP9 and Buckmark, swa her brace of Glocks and Kimber. Hrothgar brought the accursed Glock (a G19X).

And we brought an AR and sra blaster's Mossberg Patrol in .308. We were only on the 25 yard range so it was like shooting fish in a barrel with the Mossberg. The AR had not been zeroed on its red dot+magnifier combo so we had the opportunity to do that. We had a good time shooting and then repast at Texas Roadhouse.

Dies: the tools that mount in the press and perform operations on the cartridge case: deprime, size, open the case mouth, seat a bullet, crimp the mouth. Sometimes two of those are combined in a single action. With a few exceptions like .38 Spl/.357 Mag, dies are caliber specific.

Components: all the "parts" that comprise a cartridge: case, primer, powder, bullet. Within a given caliber, different combinations of components require different loading data. E.g. data for a 200 grain lead semi-wadcutter can not be used directly with a 230 grain FMJ without testing. Nor can the powder charge for Bullseye powder be used for Winchester 231.

Always thought areas which prohibit firearms should have lockers to put your gear in before entering. Even the White House has those lockboxes, but most places do not.

296 Weasel I have no need for/interest in a progressive, very happy with a turret (which as you know is instantly a single-stage if you pull out the indexing rod).

Just surprised you had one and didn't take to it. Though it's always seemed to me that progressives are for high-volume shooters, or group deals (know a few guys at the matches who reload together or at least share gear etc).

Sadly my volume of shooting, though at times respectable, has never been "high" on monthly basis. Very easy to keep myself in ammo with a turret press.

=======
I would consider buying a "The ABC's of Reloading, 10th Edition Paperback April 13, 2021
by Philip Massaro" before buying anything.

Read up on what is required first--reloading is not difficult to do but it is not for everyone because it requires absolute attention to the matter at hand.

That means, no interruptions when doing critical things like priming, dumping the powder into the cartridge, checking the powder level in cases whether by a powder checker die, or visually, and seating the bullet.

If you like to multitask on things, reloading is not for that person because only one case where you forget to put powder in a cartridge or double charge with too much powder in a case, put the wrong primer in the cartridge, etc. and bad things can happen.

Reloading requires attention to detail and concentration to do safely. Lack of either spell bad things.

It is not difficult again. It does require the same attention as using machinery like table saws, welding, etc.

Indeed. Key point to make. Don't be intimidated, reloading (for most common purposes) is pretty simple, fairly easily mastered, and fun. And just as with building a firearm vs. buying it, you learn more about the thing and the whole shebang by reloading.

Manuals, UToob, articles, veteran reloaders you know. Patience. ATTENTION TO DETAIL. Always. Set up your own quality control/failsafe procedures, and follow them. But it's not that hard once you ease into it.

311 Weasel, gotcha.

What whig said (as usual). Which all of us are saying, more/less.

Again I'll say, depending on location/market, consider buying some of the bigger ticket items (press, dies, scale) used. Much like my firearm collection, almost nothing in my reloading set-up was bought new (though much of it was lightly used, and RCBS sent me a brand new 505 scale when I sent in the used one I bought for a tune-up - which was nice).

It was/is a game to me to see how little I can spend on this reloading thing, without sacrificing any quality I'm looking for. Overall it's been an enormous, enormous $-saver, since I started in 2011.

Posted by: GWB at September 08, 2024 09:35 PM (CrXxA)

313 GWB, what caliber are you consider reloading? The reason I ask is that I've been yammering on about the topic with pistol calibers in mind since those are generally simpler to reload and where most people start. Reloading for rifle is similar in general but different in details. For example, case prep can be a little more complex.

And a great feeling of accomplishment!

Posted by: Weasel at September 08, 2024 09:41 PM (uGpeQ)

319 GWB, good question! For me the cigar issue is that my ammo factory is in the garage, and I don't want cigar smell out there (I've experimented, it's hard to prevent it, even with fans).

But for certain tasks - especially brass processing, where there is just metal involved, no powder, no primers - if overall conditions permit, you can indeed burn a cigar while doing some part of the process. I sort/inspect rifle brass, after resizing, on the back porch, with a cigar going. There are people who use hand-held primers, and prime their cases anywhere, while watching TV, whatever.

Yes - zero or minimum distraction is a key principle. But in my case, I have a 100% (often multiple) full quality inspection at every point in the process - so if a bum case slips past me on the porch, I catch it later.

And I'll have history podcasts on at the bench sometimes. Once you've got some mileage, and have your procedures down, there is a small bit of leeway. Depending on the task in question.

Posted by: rhomboid at September 08, 2024 09:41 PM (GcNJ2)

320 Hmmmm.
Lit cigar plus gunpowder and primers.
Nope.

Posted by: RI Red at September 08, 2024 09:42 PM (YL2RG)

321 Both 45 ACP and 38 Special are forgiving to reload, do not require lube for a case, and can use cast or coated bullets for substantial savings over buying it.

Treated gently, both cartridge cases can last for many reloads.

9mm is simple enough, a bit touchier than the first two I named, and may not actually make economic sense unless you plan to shoot a lot. 25 cents per 9mm round is close to what someone can reload for unless they buy bullets and cases in bulk, use certain powders, etc. I reload it simply to have a reserve if things go bad. Ditto for a 40.

357 Magnum, on the other hand is well worth reloading, due to its ease (you use the same die set as a 38 special adjusted for a bit longer case), and 357 ammo is relatively expensive on shelves. Plus, you can step down the power if necessary.

Posted by: whig at September 08, 2024 09:43 PM (kW+z9)

322 Again I'll say, depending on location/market, consider buying some of the bigger ticket items (press, dies, scale) used.

Garage/estate sales can turn up some good stuff but you have to know what you're looking for. Usually they'll want to sell a whole bunch of stuff as a lot which can be great if happens to be the stuff you want but you probably shouldn't buy a big box o' crap to get one thing out of it. Because then you're the one who has to figure out how to get rid of the rest of the crap. Craigslist is not particularly gun friendly but you can still sometimes find reloading gear.

Posted by: Oddbob at September 08, 2024 09:44 PM (/y8xj)

323 Oddbob with a key question.

And RI Red, I proselytize at my range as an RSO - with select individuals, who meet the criteria - about starting to save your brass, even if you doubt you will start reloading. I point out it's money on the ground. You can save it up over time in a bucket in the garage, and then get $ for it selling to locals via the online marketplace. Or - you start to reload, and use it yourself. No-brainer.

And like Weasel said, it's fun and there is some satisfaction when you fill that ammo can with shiny beautiful cartridges that *you* assembled.

Posted by: RI Red at September 08, 2024 09:49 PM (YL2RG)

327 Exactly what whig just said. Savings and difficulty very greatly by caliber. No handgun calibers are actually difficult once you get in the swing. But some (as he noted, 38sp and 45ACP) are especially easy for newbies.

whig also alluded to another benefit of reloading - you can make your own ammo, so panics/price rises/whatever become sort of academic for you. You can roll your own.

Another benefit, especially for revolver calibers - you can customize your loads, create soft or powder-puff loads for practice, or for female, new, or young shooters. Or go the other way - I work up loads that have (to me) the same perceived recoil as my self-defense ammo. So I can practice cheaply for serious shooting, instead of spending a mint.

GWB,

MidwayUSA gives a ten percent off on an item for your birthday if you are registered with them.

Lee Precision, direct, also occasionally has a sale on refurbished items and they are pretty good about replacing bad parts if necessary.

If space is limited, go ahead and buy their bench block system as it allows easy substitution for presses as you accumulate them.

I use the Lee Classic turret press, two single stages (one from an old Lee kit no less), and the Lee App Press depending on what I am doing. The bench block system makes it a snap to change presses.
