18 Pity Lavoisier lost his head.

At the height of the French Revolution, he was charged with tax fraud and selling adulterated tobacco, and was guillotined despite appeals to spare his life in recognition of his contributions to science. A year and a half later, he was exonerated by the French government.

1) They were really strict about paying tobacco taxes.

Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier, a meticulous experimenter, revolutionized chemistry. He established the law of conservation of mass, determined that combustion and respiration are caused by chemical reactions with what he named “oxygen,” and helped systematize chemical nomenclature, among many other accomplishments.

144 It's good to know our DOJ is finally doing something about illegal voters. (Insty)

DOJ issues warning as GOP states try to clean noncitizens from voter rolls.

The Justice Department issued a warning to states Monday to tread lightly in trying to clean up their election systems of bogus names and ineligible voters, firing a shot across the bow of GOP-led states that have been trying to erase noncitizens from their rolls.

Department officials also released a web video pleading with people to come forward with stories if they think they have been “improperly” removed.

In new guidance to states, the department said federal law allows states to clean their rolls, but it must be done within strict guidelines and only for approved reasons such as a voter has moved out of the jurisdiction, has died or has requested removal.

Musk is on record . . . .

Posted by: Notsothoreau at September 10, 2024 09:54 AM (MpVUb)

Musk is a snake oil salesman.

I discount that analysis. Here's why.

"However, they have also tagged on attacks on Tesla for having received government subsidies — subsidies and regulatory credits (which are not subsidies) . . . ."

"Tesla raked in $518 million in revenue from sales of regulatory credits in the first quarter of the year, helping the U.S. electric vehicle maker post another quarter of profit."

"Since Tesla receives all these regulatory credits for free, it can essentially sell them for a 100% profit. This has been behind its recent profitable quarters."

CNBC, 2021.

While they are not direct subsidies, per se, it is disingenuous to not include such revenue shifting schemes in the analysis, which, in effect is a tax on consumers and indirect transfer of such taxes to non-Tesla consumers.

On top of that, each car is subject to many additional federal and state incentives, which saddle taxpayers with even more Tesla "subsidies" burden.

On top of the $7,500 federal EV tax credit to applicable vehicles, the state offers:

a $5,350 innovative motor vehicle tax credit for EVs with a maximum manufacturer’s suggested retail price, or MSRP, of $80,000
a $5,500 Xcel EV rebate and the MSRP of eligible EVs varies with the model; Xcel Energy is a regulated electric utility and natural gas delivery company based in Minneapolis, Minnesota and its customers get the rebate.
a $6,000 vehicle exchange Colorado program, with a maximum MSRP of $80,000

205 A continuation of last thread, from the opposite perspective:

California Woman Moves To Texas For Freedom, Returns Citing High Costs And Political Exhaustion. A woman from California who moved to Texas because of the COVID-19 vaccine mandate returned after four months because Texas was expensive and everyone was obsessed with politics.

“I consider myself to be pretty conservative. There are a lot of California policies I’m not in favor of.” She added that many people were moving to Texas at the time saying there was “freedom” in the state.

Soon, she realized that Texas was not as cheap as she had been told. She said that it was true that Texas has no income taxes, but the property taxes were “horrific” and services were more expensive.

Now that Speakman is back in California, she says she is happy and that her time in Texas helped her to appreciate her home state.

“I really appreciate that California protects its land, I want to have public spaces that are beautiful. Plus, I love California’s great income for teachers and the great health benefits we’re given. I didn’t know how superior it was until I left.”

Musso & Frank's in Hollywood has the advantages of being relatively inexpensive and an historical landmark from the silent days, but again, to get out there would cost me as much as going to Delmonico's.

Oxygen is lighter than nitrogen, so it should be higher than 21% at 10,000 feet, but argon and neon are lighter still, so they would be more concentrated at higher altitudes at the same time.

The reason mountain climbers need oxygen isn't the percentage, but the partial pressure.

I bet "I love California’s great income for teachers and the great health benefits we’re given" was a bigger issue than the "horrific" property taxes.

I don't know how Cali income taxes work but, assuming she paid them, it seems likely that she couldn't take the overall tax expense in Cali and compare it to Texas. Still, doesn't seem like she's a big loss. Maybe she can work on turning Cali red... lol.

There's a copy of The Phoenix Saga on my bookshelf to this day. The only comic book-oriented item I have. It's less like a comic and more a visual novel -- the "graphic novel" term everybody uses today.

The stand-alone issue where Kitty, all alone, defeats an Alien-like creature on Christmas Eve at Professor X's mansion was very well done too. Artist John Byrne said he based her look on an adolescent Sigourney Weaver; so that was very fitting.

Essentially, the French kings impoverished the country by using its treasury to fight foreign wars of choice and magnificent palaces, etc. The French nobles and the clergy by and large did not care as the tax burden was not upon them.

Bit of a difference between the earlier English Civil War and the French is that the king in England was the one relatively impoverished compared to his French counterpart. Charles II was aspiring to Bourbon levels of expenditure but Parliament simply would not let him.

I do all of my own research, but all I did was posted a comment, that's all. I, personally, couldn't care less about Teslas. I drive a '06 Mustang GT (372,000 miles), have a 57 Chevy and a 70 Chevelle (bought new by me in 1970) in the garage, both restored by me. So, researching why people are driving Teslas is not a priority. Many will be driving ICE cars this winter.

That remark was not an attack on you, it was just a preemptive disclaimer to ward off the hordes of admiring Musk fans.

I have not done full research on the China import situation of Teslas; I merely came across a blurb. I suspect that that could be part of the reason that Tesla are now being pushed down to the filthy masses, which ironically, is why such will become less attractive to the upscale buyers at the same time.

Sorry, I, like many here, have been in a rather foul mood lately with what's been unraveling around us. I better not watch the debate tonight, or you may read about me in the newspaper.

No worries. Text is a medium in which it is difficult to communicate sentiment. I admire your commitment to old iron. I have a 32 year old F350, and I have been looking at even older to restore for a woods truck. Take it easy.

428 Yeah, I don't see Musk as any kind of Savior.... He's quirky as hell.. I just think I'd rather have him on my side than not... And right now he's on my/our side.

It started as a comment on subsidies and degenerated into you're either for him or against him. I agree, I'd rather have him on my side.

But I bust his chops. And I don't trust his instincts, at least politically.

He's an obama/biden voter, who, to me, seems to go with the political wind. And where I discredit his instincts politically, maybe he can be lauded for reading the political tea leaves better than anyone and milking the state for every red cent possible.

Especially if the husband was Lavoisier. Good luck being prospective fiance #2.

434 My writing muse sent me a photo of the old Delmonico's restaurant at 56 Beaver Street in NYC. They're still open, but the menu - woof! It would cost me at least a grand to have dinner there, and probably more depending on the lady at my side.

Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing at September 10, 2024 10:12 AM (Q0kLU)

Huh. I looked at the menu, and unless you're planning on eating a Waygu steak each, plus a buying *really* nice bottle of wine, I can't see how you'd hit that number.

Prices actually look reasonable. Considering dinner for two at a dumpy Mex. restaurant routinely goes over $40 here in the sticks, $30-$60 entrees at the oldest fine dining establishment in North America don't seem untoward...
