THE MORNING RANT: A Study Shows that Blue State Refugees Are Voting Heavily Republican in Tennessee

Big Red Ballot Box.JPG

There is a great exodus of people fleeing the taxes, crime, and other left-wing pathologies of blue states for the freedom and culture of red states. This has caused much consternation among conservatives in fast-growing red states, who fear the refugees will vote left and ruin their new states, as they did in prior waves that flipped states such as Colorado and Arizona from Republican to Democrat.

There is some great news out of an analysis of new-to-Tennessee voters casting their first ballots after registering in Tennessee – they are voting overwhelmingly Republican. In this study, first time voters from California are casting more than three times as many Republican ballots as they are Democrat ballots.

Before I discuss the specifics of the analysis, I believe it is necessary to once again discuss the difference between “colonizers” and “refugees.” The colonizers tend to be left-wing voters relocating to a red state because of their job. That is what makes Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s recruitment of tech companies so distasteful. Abbott has recruited wave after wave of tech workers from California, and they generally bring their left-wing voting habits with them. It is terribly short-sighted for Texas to import anti-carbon voters who will enthusiastically kill off Texas’ petroleum and cattle industries. Refugees, by contrast, tend to be conservatives fleeing blue states. They vote Republican in their new state, making it even redder. Even better, they bring with them an appreciation for just how destructive 21st Century Democrats are when they gain power.

My growing neighborhood in a Tennessee suburb had so many Illinois license plates in 2021 and 2022 that you might have thought it was a Chicago suburb. During my “Welcome to the neighborhood” chats with them, at which time I asked what brought them to Tennessee, it became clear that pretty much all of them are refugees.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press just did an analysis of those who moved from out of state to Hamilton County, Tennessee (e.g. Chattanooga and surrounding suburbs) since January 1, 2023, totaling how many voted in this year’s Republican primaries versus how many voted in the Democrat primaries. It was a mega-landslide in favor of Republicans. (Or maybe that should be “maga-landslide.”

“Hamilton County voter data shows ‘ruby red’ Tennessee is a big draw for those leaving 'Soviet Republic' of California” [Chattanooga Times Free Press – 8/31/2024]

Among those who have moved from California to Hamilton County in recent years and registered to vote since the beginning of 2023, 75% of them participated in a Republican primary this year — either the one in March or August. (Tennesseans don't align with a political party when registering to vote. Party affiliation is determined by which party ballot they chose in the latest primary.)

The article quoted Paul Chabot of the online site Conservative Move, who observed that blue state conservatives fleeing to Tennessee are heading for the suburbs, not the major cities, because even the cities are too Democrat.

Tennessee, especially its suburbs surrounding the urban cities, Chabot said, is among the top destinations for the tens of thousands of clients his company serves each year. "The big cities — Nashville, Knoxville and others — are run largely by Democrats, but once you get out of the city limits into the suburbs where most of our clients are moving," Chabot said, "these areas are ruby red."

Below is a chart that the Times Free Press compiled from records at the Hamilton County Election Commission. It shows which primary ballot was chosen by those new voters whose previous address was in California.

• 83 former Californians voted in the Republican primary.
• 26 former Californians voted in the Democrat primary.
• 1 General* ballot.

(*There was one ballot cast in a concurrent, non-partisan election for a municipal office, at which time the newcomer didn’t vote in either party’s primary.)

That is a ratio exceeding 3 to 1 in favor of Republicans. California transplants are making this county redder.

Chart of California to TN voters.JPG

The ratio was approximately the same for Illinois transplants.

While these 110 Californians who moved to Hamilton County, Tennessee are not a huge number by themselves, their voting behavior is likely a representative sample of how blue state refugees vote, wherever their diaspora takes them.

Don’t forget, Florida moved from a “purple” tossup state to solidly Republican in less than a decade, due to the overwhelmingly Republican voting habits of the blue state refugees fleeing to the Sunshine State.

In a way, these refugees fleeing to red states are a little bit like the Cubans who escaped from Castro’s communism. They experienced first-hand just how destructive left-wing governance can be, and they have a passion to not let their new home states fall victim to the same political ruin that they fled. In a review of Roger L. Simon’s “American Refugees,” Mark Pulliam wrote, “Newly arrived transplants, acutely aware of the peril posed by leftist policies, often find themselves acting like Paul Revere, warning the cliquish locals of the dangers of passivity and complacency. Far from posing a threat to red states, refugees from blue states, Simon posits, are in fact ‘a cavalry come to rescue the red states from themselves.’”

Liberty cannot be taken for granted. I am grateful that blue state refugees are making free states more conservative.

12 They flee their states...
OR
They move with their jobs because their employer is fleeing their states

And then they come into a perfectly healthy host state and, like a virus encoded with blue-state-fever, start voting for what is killing the state they had to move from.

It's a tremendous injustice for the victim states.

15 I have family in TN, and we were discussing this. I was telling him the CA refugees coming to AZ are liberal, but he thought the CA residents moving to TN were conservative.

His pet theory is a liberals are less likely to go to a "deep red" state across the country, you'd have to already be conservative to move to a really conservative southern state. But a small step across the border to a "purple state" is easier to process and a moderate/liberal voter will do that.

The CA exodus seems to have made the red southwest now blue/purple, but certain states in the South like FL, redder.

I think AZ is destined to follow Colorado and be a blue leaning state, it's changed so much in the last 15 years. It's not native Arizonans, its the "new" people.

Posted by: Blago at September 06, 2024 11:07 AM (wMRY8)

16 My example for conservative refugees is Idaho. A lot of people fled CA to Idaho resulting in Idaho going something like 63% for PDT in 2020. (TJM can probably correct me on this if I'm wrong on the percentages)

Unfortunately, our current state, AZ, seems to have been inundated with colonizers. However, AZ has a history of being somewhat schizophrenic in their voting patterns. For instance, a while back, we had a deep red State legislature and Janet Napolitano as our governor.

18 I'm not crazy about the use of "colonizers" for the leftists. It is buying the left's Leninist model of Evil Western Imperialism, and the Mahometan anti-Israeli Jew-hate. Even though I get the point of using their language against them. But that is successful when the language is new, like "fake news". Lenin's is over a century old, and I expect it will work just as well as other cases of following their lead.

Even if you think you're going to avoid it, words have a tidal tug.

That it started in 2020 is no accident IMO. I lived in California (LA County) for 30 years until covid came along and although I observed a lot of political nonsense, covid was the first time lefty policies materially affected my life in noticeable ways… lockdowns, mask mandates, church closures…. they even closed the beach where I loved to jog. Now I’m in Texas…. I doubt we would’ve considered moving until the nightmare of covid. The lefties really showed their true colors and it was very ugly…. No apologies either, to this day. “Doctor” Barbara Ferrer is still chief health officer in LA County…. spit

Yeah, my point was that at least if you have separate well-defined countries, they can set up a semi-cohesive government. Independent city-states aren't viable unless they're on the coast, and have an independent economy based on international trade. It would be an epic fail.

I came to that reluctant conclusion myself. Lincoln's House Divided speech comes to mind. It also explains why politics has become so dysfunctional in the US. You cannot have a nation where one faction seeks to dominate another by Calvinball rules.. The other faction and its supporters always gets a say in the matter.

Generally, that move is to opt out and federalism to some extent makes it easier to do that.

64 In Texas, when Ted Cruz faced off against Beto O'Rourke in 2018, he won by a scant 219k votes, or 2.6 points. CNN exit polls at the time showed that native Texans actually voted more for O'Rourke, but transplants from other states put Cruz over the top by voting for him by a higher margin.

Moral of the story: be kind to ex-Californians. They're here for a reason.

I'm thinking that it's more likely to be annulled by judges --farcically--as "unconstitutional" than it could be reversed by proper means. Because I think I've counted it that 20 states would have to decide to give up the share of representation they have.

About more than half the states have 10 or less electoral votes. And *most* of those states would lose a fair degree of representation in the process. So it's about 20 states that have to agree to this to get to the 3/4s ratification.

So, unless everybody gets a lot dumber really quick, I don't foresee that happening.

It doesn't help that California essentially squandered the money into consumption today rather than investments.

It was by design that BS regimes ran us out- because now there are fewer conservatives in Wa, Or, Ca, NY to vote against marxist crime ridden lick spittle dystopian hell scape policies.

Also- all the Fugees I know are either/both upper middle class / wealthy - and highly productive members of the economy. If you look around NE TN there is some serious money coming here. Fugees from NY and CA are buying 4x the house with millions left over to spend in the local economy.

Same dynamic as to why Hogan in MD and Baker in MA won as governors in deep blue states. It is to apply a check on the excesses of the monolithic blue state. Red states have similar problems with corruption that blue states do--it is more that GOP types are less likely to be an immediate threat to life and liberty and a pocketbook than blue types.

So, you get the minority coalition of blue voters in red states and add in enough red votes from the left of the GOP faction to win a statewide race in a ruby red state.

In post colonial India, Muslims, having treated Hindis like shit during the Moghul empire, feared being treated like shit in return and so fled to majority Muslim areas. Hindis in Muslim areas feared the same. People that did not want a partition stayed and fought for their homes which did not turn out well for those in the minority.

The general solution by national governments, if powerful enough, is to ramp up coercion to 'make' each other tolerate the existence of others .

Still, there was this great moment a few years ago. I was talking to my uncle on the phone, and I just described an old etching I'd found in a newspaper showing an army marching over a bridge in Columbia after Shiloh. He said, "I know where that is." The next time I visited, he took me down there. It wasn't the bridge that's right about there now, but you can see the original supports of the bridge as it was about 50 yards upriver.

Obama now owns Harris. Legitimate VP candidates, from an already weak democrat bench caused by Obama’s famed 2010 humiliation, stood down. Their financial backers and political advisors suggesting they sit this one out rather than get themselves attached to Harris, saddled Harris with a terrible VP option. Walz. I’ve mentioned his awfulness above. They might have had a shot at Shapiro, from a state Harris desperately needs to win. But he’s Jewish. And the democrats, who are the party of antisemites now (another Obama accomplishment), couldn’t abandon Iran after October 7. They can’t abandon them after Hamas executed six hostages. It’s impossible to sustain this. And it is all Obama’s fault.

Dang, I hope this analysis is accurate. It seems like it is.

176 Good Morning Rant. Thank you.

I love Tennessee. I have cousins who went from country to lefty near Nashville and relatives in Knoxville who are steady Republican. It's just a really nice state and I so hope that holds - forever.

Relatives in central Florida who fled there years ago are complaining that overcrowding and insurance costs are making it almost impossible to remain, but now they can't afford to move to a 'better area.'

More than retirees changing the political picture, I think it's more so 'families' and children. The more that settle in a particular area, the greater taxes for infrastructure, state government, etc. While wealthier areas put land into conservation, other areas of the same region become ever more political and crowded. And, of course, more diverse.

I wanted to move to Virginia years ago, but now lovely Loudoun County, VA comes to mind & how it, too, had been sucked into the worst of politics. It's still lovely & I like Gov. Youngkin, but politics in VA can be particularly nasty & there are now some of the snobbiest places in state ever, thanks to D.C., and as there already are in PA.

184 169 DS was a successful and popular governor. In 2022, he was running against a weirdo crossover scumbag who nobody liked. Of course he got more votes in 2022 than 2018.

The cleanup began before DS arrived on the scene. It started after the 2000 debacle. It was basically a 20 year effort to clean up the votes. It worked. There IS a way to do it. But it takes years if not decades, AND the political will to do it.

We need to continue, I think to put the leverage on to make sure we move towards a two state solution. I think we're at a critical point right now. We need the Netanyahu government to start moving in that direction. But I think those folks who are speaking out loudly in Michigan are speaking out for all the right reasons. It's a humanitarian crisis. It can't stand the way it is. And we need to find a way that people can live together in this and we’ve said it and continue to say it, getting a ceasefire with the return of the hostages and then moving towards a sustainable two state solution is the only way forward.“

Tell someone they cannot do something and then pissing on those same citizens from a great height by endangering and impoverishing them is not a recipe for success in governance. Because I can is never a good rationale for governments to follow.

Snipes, the election director in Miami Dade was a major reason that elections were so close in Florida. Once she was forced out, Miami Dade snapped back in voting.

Ken Blackwell did the same thankless thing in Ohio as SoS and fought it out in the courts while the typical GOP turds in other state offices dithered around.

The Motor Voter bill is clear. Voter lists must be cleared of deadwood (moved, dead, non-existent, etc. on a regular basis). That is what the GOP forced onto the bill despite not being in a winning position. So, even in blue states, determined citizens and local GOP managed to get millions of non existent voters chucked out of the voter lists in Orange County and other places in CA. Success has been repeated in jurisdiction after jurisdiction even suits in blue states with Obama judges because the law is clear on that point. You must purge the voter rolls periodically.

196 Florida swung hard to the right for DeSantis. He’s a good governor, handled hurricanes well, and opened up the beaches during Covid. That’s stuff people like, it’s kinda non-partisan stuff that LIVs reward with votes.

But that doesn’t translate into a deep red state for a senate election.

Trunp only won FL by 4% in 2020. despite what people seem to think? Florida is not Oklahoma. , so yeah a senate race will be competitive.

Rubio won his election in 2022 by nearly 20%.

This is a huge swing in a swing state that could potentially be thrown up to "popular governor" who...went straight ahead into the culture war.

But that should have no effect on the 2024 race because polls, which have had massive, massive misses in FL recently, don't agree.

Labor, despite having a huge majority--(it got about 33 percent or so of the vote) received a historic low in its voting percentage since WWII.

The Conservatives were crippled even more because they proved useless and actually harmful during Covid period to governance. They dropped to a historic low in voting percentage too (24 pct or so I think).

Turnout was down so much that the 2024 election percentage was about the same as the 2001 election and only the 1918 election was lower than 2001.

In a first past the post system, that is unprecedented.

Dang. I see both positions, and have vacillated between both.

Without bloody conflict, I do not believe Cali, NY, etc can be changed. Simultaneously, if there is a peaceful option, I can't blame people for seeking such.

219 Buck-I’m one of those blue state refugees that has come to TN. I left Massachusetts 10 months ago after 35 years in the Boston area. I tell people here that I came to make it redder not blue or purple.

If the cost of living, taxes and general lunatics that run the northern states wasn’t enough to leave, the Covid debacle put it in another category. It was unreal how it was handled and for how long. The vaccine and mask mandates were just being lifted in the fall of 2023 as I was leaving. I lost my job because of the vax mandate.

I had enough of the discrimination from being non vaxed from people I had known for decades. I was treated like a leper. And no one would hire without vax paperwork. I jokingly (but really seriously) said to folks maybe I should wear a yellow Star of David on my shirt so they all would know. That snark didn’t go over well.

So I had enough and left. I’m happy to be here. Still trying to get adjusted, find a job and where I eventually want to buy a house. I miss my friends that stuck by me but I’m hopeful to make new ones here.

222 As an escapee to Texas myself, I have long held that people who voluntarily relocate to red states are overwhelmingly conservative in their politics. Colorado was destroyed because the California transplants were impressed with the skiing and laid back attitude. Same with the hippies who infested Vermont starting in the '60's. But most of this type are repelled by the conservative values of the red states. Conversely, the current migration attracts people fed up with their leftist hell holes.
