Mark Rothko is a key figure in Abstract Expressionism, best known for his large color field paintings like No.61 (Rust and Blue) (1953). Born Markus Rothkowitz in Dvinsk, Russian Empire (now Latvia) in 1903, Rothko and his family immigrated to the United States in 1913.

Effing Rothko. I once was a party at some rich tool who was showing off the new $30k glass mosaic on the bottom of his pool. (We knew the artist, good on him to soak this empty suit, don't know that I even got the name of the host.) And he had a numbered Rothko in his *dining room*. So it's a dogshit painting, in a terrible location, with appalling lighting and cheap glass, and he thought it was a showpiece. One of the friends I went with--free food and drinks!--just stopped in front of the abomination and nearly wept, said "wow, that really is powerful." I said "Richard, you're stoned out of your mind." "Oh, yeah, wooah. Where were the snacks, again?"

One of my favorite scenes from a Woody Allen movie:
Allan: That's quite a lovely Jackson Pollock, isn't it? Museum Girl: Yes, it is. Allan: What does it say to you? Museum Girl: It restates the negativeness of the universe. The hideous lonely emptiness of existence. Nothingness. The predicament of Man forced to live in a barren, Godless eternity like a tiny flame flickering in an immense void with nothing but waste, horror and degradation, forming a useless bleak straitjacket in a black absurd cosmos. Allan: What are you doing Saturday night? Museum Girl: Committing suicide. Allan: What about Friday night?" Effing Rothko.

Maybe it looks better in person. I'd take this over portraits anytime.
Posted by: grammie winger - cheesehead at September 02, 2024 09:38 AM (SfhV1) Yeah, that's the thing about Rothko, you have to see his stuff in person to appreciate his art and it's quality. He was obsessed with presenting light and darkness ,as we perceive them, on canvas. They truly look as though they have real depth as though you can see light blooming through fog or or fading into deep darkness. His best works are surprisingly immersive. CBD would say he's a "craftsman" because of his obsessive layering techniques to get his effects. I'd call him an artist as there is real thought and intention behind what he is doing. BONUS! iIf you like more representative paintings with awesome light and darkness effects, check out J. M. W. Turner, a 19th Century painter, in the British Museums in London. Again you've got to see them in person to get the full effect. He's liable to become your favorite painter as he became mine, just by wandering around the Tate Museum. Eric Daugherty @EricLDaugh NEW - Kamala Harris’ internal polls are looking bleak, similar to pre-debate Biden, per @MBoyle1 of @Breitbart. This isn’t the first report that’s emerged of Kamala having worrying internal polls. Jake Tapper and David Axelrod have both said the same thing over the past couple weeks. Folks, she’s crashing and burning, and her team knows the sugar high wasn’t real. Expect a major move soon, just like how Biden’s team rushed to throw on a June debate - which ultimately sunk his campaign. I had an art teacher try to explain the concept behind the commissioning of art. Some artists only paint when they are paid to produce something. Others paint profusely because they like to.
It's really weird how some artists who only do commissioned works vs. those who painted frequently stack up against each other when it comes to the value of their work. I mean, it's totally subjective. Not based on rarity. Posted by: Martini Farmer at September 02, 2024 10:31 AM (Q4IgG) 239

Werner is fairly certain that this work is a form of Rorschach test. It requires the viewer, in their contemplation of the canvas, to experience an epiphany: the true focus is not on what is there, but what is not. In other words, it is our old friend, the Void.
Once that is understood, then the creation falls into place. The colors and their hues are simply the Void's delight at presenting a meaningless substance that leads to angst, anomie, and despair.by its absence of substance. Ha, says the Void, I have deceived you, and your futile existence is impressed upon your failing mind. Hate not the playa, one inquires of the curiously animated Void and its surprising capability of speech? No, answers the Void, hate both the Void and the game, fool. You be tripping and straight-up frontin' if you perceive otherwise. Word, you respond, with a rueful mien. Then do you and the Void both ponder why such idiom has been employed. Ach. Our weather changed over the last two days. It had been really hot, temps here in Kentucky in mid and upper 90's for about a week - 10 days. Today it's currently 72 and probably will only hit 80. And dry.
And there are signs of fall. Some leaves on the Black Walnut's are turning yellow and the nuts are falling. My ornamental grasses are beginning to dry out. I expect to see the Sand Cranes heading south any day now. Posted by: Martini Farmer at September 02, 2024 10:50 AM (Q4IgG) 304

There's no easing of summer here. The only thing I've noticed is that the savage sun on my living room window seems to pass off a little earlier now. By 5 pm it's half gone, whereas in late June and July it took until 6 to vanish halfway.
I raise ferns from spores, and this summer was really rough on them. They largely died back in the middle of the heat wave we had a month ago, but now have sprung back to life, as they would normally do in June. Spores aplenty! Posted by: Archimedes at September 02, 2024 10:50 AM (xCA6C) 306
