A: Um, that would be a big, fat, NO! So yeah, fundamentals and the WeaselDoctrine. It's really nothing more than doing the right things over and over and over and over until they become second nature. Having problems controlling your flinch reflex? Then focus on controlling your flinch reflex. Is your grip affecting your accuracy? Then focus on consistency with the proper grip mechanics. This really isn't that difficult, you just need to develop good habits in practice and training and apply these good habits in a logical, methodical and consistent manner. OK, I see you need an example of what effective results look like. Allow me to introduce you to Jonny Kim. Becoming a Navy SEAL is a major accomplishment. Going on to become a Harvard trained M.D., Naval Flight Surgeon and Naval Aviator is frankly impressive. Becoming a NASA Astronaut on top of all of that before age 37 is, well, just showing off. You will note there are combined rifle and handgun range safety briefings both days and attendance at one is mandatory. We take your safety seriously and ask everyone who plans to shoot to please also plan on attending this important briefing. All shooters are asked to check in with an RSO (sporting an Orange Cap of Dorkiness for easy identification) upon your arrival at either of the ranges who will answer questions and direct you to an open firing position. The RSOs wield unspeakable power so it is in your best interest to be nice to them. If you are a novice shooter, or even have never been to the range before and think guns are icky, you are welcome to shoot! Just see an RSO and they will set you up with an experienced shooter to help you. If you miss the mandatory range safety briefing which is mandatory and must be attended, all is not lost. See an RSO to plead your case, be harangued and chastised, and then spend some punishment time on the Disciplinary Range of Shame. In the interests of time and to save yourself the humiliation, please make it to the scheduled range briefings. Thanks. Finally, please plan on stopping somewhere along your way to Texas and picking up some ammunition if you plan to shoot and aren't bringing your own weapons. Everyone is very generous with sharing, but please don't rely on the generosity of others to provide everything for you. You can really help out by grabbing a box of 9mm or 5.56mm or whatever you want to shoot. Call for Volunteers Help! As I mentioned above, the shooting program in Texas continues to grow, and we wouldn't be able to do it without a lot of help. If you're interested in lending a hand in some capacity, please drop me a note at gunthread at protonmail dot com indicating your date and time of arrival, and we'll be in touch. Thank You! RSOs from prior years: Expect an email from me soon. If you are attending the TXMoMe this year, and all the cool kids are, please keep an eye on this section for important information and updates in the coming weeks! I also want to reiterate the TXMoMe is not a gun thing with some socializing attached, but rather is a social thing with some shooting attached. 9 Hole Reviews recently did a podcast about the Model 1917 "Enfield," shooting it w/ iron sights out to 500 yards (Spoiler: it passes, but not w/o some shooter error in using the sights). It also includes a discussion about whether Alvin York had a 1903 Springfield or 1917 "Enfield" that day. York's unit (like most AEF draftee units) was equipped with the 1917 "Enfield," but they do discuss whether it was possible for York himself to have "acquired" a Springfield sometime before his Medal of Honor action.

Although ice and keeping it elevated
Make those little whiskey ice balls, fill a bag up with them. Then, as they seem on the verge of melting, take one out and drop it in your bourbon. Keep refilling the bourbon until the ice is gone. Then replace ice. And bourbon. Is that the right medical advice? Posted by: GWB at September 01, 2024 07:11 PM (CrXxA) 21
I also wonder if the wetting of the front sight was something York was actually known to do or if they just made that up for the movie. Seems like if anything it would cause more glare making it harder to keep the sight in focus.

Why, yes, Weasel, as a matter of fact I have been to the range, today in fact! As some may recall, last week I was giddy over my acquisition of an SA-35, and today was my first time to shoot it. I have to admit that it took me a while to get accustomed to the trigger. It's different from a 1911 and from my FN Reflex (current EDC). It's not a bad trigger, it's just . . . different. Once I got used to the trigger, I found the gun to be quite accurate, and pleasant to shoot. I fired about 100 rounds of FMJ, Winchester and Remington hollow points, and Hornady Critical Defense. Not a hiccup.
I am well pleased. Posted by: That SOB Van Owen at September 01, 2024 07:20 PM (LxryA) 38
Because there was no rifle match this weekend, I headed to the range to do a bit of pistol practice. My initial plan was our steel bay which is set up like a mini steel challenge. No bueno as the bay was in use so, plan B, next bay over.
I was worried my draw from concealment had gotten sloppy so, I got the timer and set things up to see how I did with the draw and shoot. My draw was slow, but, at 10 yards, the plate on the rack went over, so accuracy was there. I repeated several times and satisfied myself my draw, fire, accuracy and target transitions were all satisfactory. Granted, I'm not nearly as proficient as I was back when I was shooting IDPA and Steel challenge constantly, but, still decent enough for day to day. Thanks, nurse, for inspiring me to get out and get the lint off the carry weapon. Posted by: blake - semi lurker in marginal standing (tT6L1) at September 01, 2024 07:20 PM (tT6L1) 39
Speaking of AR10s and problems, mine still won't feed from the magazine. Last (and first) time I had it out to the range was last fall before we moved. At that time, the problem was that the tip of the bullet hit the back edge of the chamber about (guessing, not measured) 20-thousandths too low and jamming. I finally got around to unboxing my gear from the move and looked at it again. I had thought that maybe my OAL was too long but that wasn't it. It's the same as Federal factory loads. A bit of googling said it might be the Magpul mags. I bought a ProMag metal one and it feeds exactly the same. I contacted Aero Precision's support chat and the guy just told me to put in a RMA request under warranty. I did that two weeks ago and haven't heard anything back yet. Based on my previous experience, I don't expect to for at least a couple of months.

Last week we did a steel shoot. Here's a thing I learned about red dots. The brightness adjustment is there for a reason.
Steel shoot is indoor and the range is dimly lit. I think the brightness button on the dot got pressed while in the range bag. It was at max brightness which was TOO bright. It totally washed out the targets. So that's something I will need to check for in the future. Posted by: blaster - Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat at September 01, 2024 07:22 PM (QfvaV) 44

Since I haven’t bought/sold gubs nuch for a few years, and reload almost everything I shoot, I rarely am in a fun store. Yesterday went to a Turner’s to use a gift card I won in a raffle at our annual RSO dinner. Obviously I don’t reload 22LR, so decided to top off the (smallish) stockpile of that.
Took quite a while. Clerks were all busy with paperwork (4473s, “safety” tests, actually processing people picking up their gun purchases). And of course even *ammo* in CA requires you to be in a background check system (I am, thanks to last gun buy after new idiotic law went into effect). So even selling me some boxes of 22 took some b.s. bureaucracy. Good news is clerk gave me a sale price on the ammo, and he said gun business had been good going on several years. I don’t think the 2020 panic ever really abated, as far as firearm sales here. At least the new non-panic baseline was raised substantially. Here is something that makes me think that gun manufacturers do not care to do business in NY or maybe just NYC.
My newest Sig came with two 8 round magazines (I have .45 Sig 1911) and I wanted to get two more magazines because why not? NYC has a 10 round capacity restriction for handguns. So I go onto the Sig website, find the magazines and select them for purchase. The website asks me my zip code as it says some states have restrictions, so I enter my zip code. It then came back that there was not a single magazine from them that I could buy. Everything came back "not available in your area" Effing NY :-( Posted by: Scuba_Dude at September 01, 2024 07:33 PM (0XVad) 67

Anyway, Range Report!
I love my PSA AR 10. However! You remember my forward assist broke early on. No biggie, not needed. Today the paddle on my bolt release broke! Whiskey Tango Foxtrot? Do not like plastic. Or MIM. Or whatever. Posted by: RI Red ----- First check with PSA about compatibility but that sounds like a contractor shipped PSA some lousy MIM parts. If compatible, I would put Aero Precision lower parts on it. DPMS should be okay as well. There may be one or two parts in those Aero Precision or DPMS parts that are not compatible but I don't think so. Armalite pattern AR 10 has several parts that are not compatible but the main difference between Aero Precision is that it has a high upper receiver (affecting scope mounts) and DPMS made both high (copied by Aero) and low upper receivers (copied by PSA). This is from memory but there is a website especially for checking parts compatibility between AR 10's different makes. Posted by: whig at September 01, 2024 07:47 PM (kW+z9) 87

Cheap Guns.. Cheap.
PSA is running a daily deal with free shipping of three (X3) stealth stripped lowers for $110.00 (plus tax). That's less than $37 each. Having to ship to local FFLs I make a couplesof calls to see what they would charge for the service. Clearly explain what the deal was and they tell me the charge would be $35 transfer fee for each 'firearm' plus $5 bckground check... so gonna charge me $110 for being a passthrough? 100% markup. So, local bigbox BassPro has low end stripped lower for $65 (including fees)... Might just buy one, not because need, but chump change and spite. Go back to guys that quoted 100% mark-up, see what they have for cheap lowers, tell them what just just transpired and then, "Bye". FWIW, Brownells (selling Wolff springs) and Wolff Springs direct have new mag springs for Browning High Power mags as well as other makes. Good to revitalize an older mag with a new spring. Can resolve some feeding problems.
Wolff Gunsprings (use that as a search term) are great folks to work with and they have a substantial amount of individual springs and spring kits for rebuilding many firearms including out of manufacture ones. Cheap enough and very high quality. If you have some firearms for serious social purposes, I would pick up a total spring kit from them for your sidearm or long arm model. Posted by: Ed L ======== Ed, the older Armalite pattern which was taken from the original AR-10 design has largely faded away due to parts incompatibility. DPMS then made one for Sportsmen around the same time that Cerberus Hedge fund was buying up Remington, Marlin, etc. and DPMS. DPMS has two patterns--a high upper receiver that is just a tad higher (Aero Precision) and a lower upper receiver pattern (PSA). Some folks report having trouble with one or the other on interchangeability of parts but part of that is probably tolerance stacking from different mfgs. of the parts. You have to actually check with other mfgs of AR-10's if you are buying a whole rifle as that will affect what handguards work with which DPMS pattern. Armalite pattern AR-10s were never that popular and more expensive. Most of those and the one or two duplicate manufacturers of Armalite patterns sold complete rifles rather than parts. I never thought I'd have a reason to dislike the Arizona heat, but I am getting really eager to get back to an outdoor range. It's just more fun. Shouldn't be too long now, I hope. I had to scurry indoors in late May, so it's at least as far from the solstice at that was, so...maybe I'll give it a try this week, or next. Still, the last range session was enlightening. Labor Day impending was all the goad I needed to start focusing on the pistol I expect to bring to Texas, instead of the big heavy fun stuff, so that I do not embarrass the Splunge household. Posted by: Scuba_Dude ===== Scoob. It is not hard to build an AR-10. Basically an enlarged AR-15 with some minor differences in the major parts-upper receiver, bolt, barrel, mag, and lower receiver. Uses a different buffer too. That being said, build an AR first to get the hang of it. Cheaper if you mess up--the main issue that gets people into trouble on AR patterns is overtorquing the barrel nut and cracking the upper as a result. Considering what those things go for, you should be getting the cream of the AR-10 crop. Referring to the compatibility issues mentioned above, it will probably save you some headache if you don't mix-and-match manufacturers for the upper, lower, and parts kit. According to the internet the bolt catch on an AR10 is different from an AR15. AND there are different catches based on whether its a DPMS or Armalite pattern. Though it seems like PSA is...neither.
But most like DPMS. The PSA one is $10. https://tinyurl.com/ydmfshhj Posted by: blaster - Fortis Fortuna Adiuvat at September 01, 2024 08:15 PM (QfvaV) 145
@RI Red, I ran across a ewe tube video which mentioned how dirty brass from a suppressed rifle is. From what I gather, the suppressor forces gas back down the barrel. Any chance that's the reason why there's such an ejection difference?

I have a DPMS AR10. I was planning on buying a 24" barrel upper for it but they never seemed to have any in stock. I gave up after a few years of trying go build one as as the upper blanks I could find all left about an 1/8" gap between the upper and the lower.
I have thought about just getting another barrel but never have as I wonder what all else is not compatable with the DPMS lower. Gas system etc... The firearm I have is a M16A2 style upsized to .308. An iron site rifle with the rear site on rails but the front fixed to the barrel. With a scope on it the front site is a hazy image but it's not unworkable. I have though about getting out a die grinder and removing it but then it's a never again iron site firearm. I wish Panther Arms had their shit together. It kind of pisses me off they had a zeroing target that came with the rifle that advertises all the stuff availble for the gun but never has anything in stock. I think it took the combo of both Iraq and Afghanistan to get the Army to take a fresh look at what the AR-10 platform could really do without the biases of the early M16's problems in mind. Posted by: Notorious BFD Reforger, I did a deep dive about 2018-9 when I built mine on the different AR-10 systems and built Aero Precision due to affordability. The problem is that most other mfgs (not of the Armalite pattern) went for the DPMS low receiver thus handguards are a problem if you do not buy Aero precision ones--you end up with a slight elevation difference which can make a difference in zeroing iron sights if that matters to you. If you have a DPMS lower, then you should be able to fit a new barrel to it but you may need to use aftermarket handguards that come with a barrel nut and skip the military style barrel nut if that is what is installed. Check with Brownells if you have questions as they have probably one of the better customer service people manning the phones for questions. Posted by: whig at September 01, 2024 08:37 PM (kW+z9) 187
Scuba (and others), while leafing through the Midway flyer I got in the mail last week, I noticed something that was new-to-me*. An attachment for (long range) metal targets that lit up when vibrated - so you'd stick it on the assembly for a long-range steel target, and it would give visual confirmation of a hit. At least I think that's the idea, someone here probably knows.
* As I don't keep current with lots of gun stuff, this may be an old thing that I missed way back. Posted by: rhomboid at September 01, 2024 08:39 PM (GcNJ2) 188

To complete, Reforger, if you have a DPMS lower pattern upper receiver--I am pretty sure that any barrel that fits the DPMS upper will work. The Armalite pattern used a different barrel nut-barrel lockup design and there are actual physical differences in the specification so that you cannot mount an armalite pattern barrel/barrel nut on the DPMS AR-10 system regardless of DPMS high or low upper receivers. There are differences also in the Armalite pattern lower and that of the DPMS pattern lower receiver. The uppers are not compatible with the lowers of a different pattern.

How about that vibration-based long-range hit indicator with the light I saw in the Midway flyer? Is that a thing? Or not so good for some reason?

@RI Red, I ran across a ewe tube video which mentioned how dirty brass from a suppressed rifle is. From what I gather, the suppressor forces gas back down the barrel. Any chance that's the reason why there's such an ejection difference?
Posted by: blake - semi lurker in marginal standing (tT6L1) at September 01, 2024 08:15 PM (tT6L1) WRT outside of case - Lower pressure and subsonic rounds don't get as good a seal at the case mouth so more gas comes back through the chamber outside the case. Would imagine outside and inside get filthy when using a can. Posted by: Itinerant Alley Butcher at September 01, 2024 08:52 PM (/lPRQ) 219
Posted by: rhomboid at September 01, 2024 08:39 PM (GcNJ2) Ever see the "tilt" switch in an old pinball machine? Basically just a plumb bob, with an extended tip, passing through a ring. If the machine was tilted, or shaken a mite vigorously, the tip would touch the ring, close a circuit, and the "tilt" relay would latch. Something like this would not be hard to rig up, for those electronically inclined. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at September 01, 2024 08:52 PM (iWRry) 220

Posted by: Oddbob No, individual sales without an FFL (C&R) count is illegal between two individual even for long arms. Basically a commercial FFL in Texas might be able to sell to you a long arm if you state is amenable to that (and the FFL will check with that state or not do it now because of the new zero tolerance ATF actions against FFLs right now). Handgun sales always have to be via an FFL in the home state of the buyer. It might be possible from one C&R FFL to sell to another C&R FFL in another state but that is really an ATF question and the firearm would have to be a C&R. Antiques though can be sold across state lines if there is no problem via state laws. To the Feds, they are not "firearms" by statute. Posted by: whig at September 01, 2024 09:02 PM (kW+z9) 246

Highly recommended as his books are mainly compilations of his short column in SWAT magazine over about a decade from 1990's to 2000's. He emphasized fundamentals over and over again instead of the latest gimmick, firearm, cartridge, or training technique du jour that did not directly address being able to use a firearm effectively in combat. Motorcycle wreck, Oct 98. Got 5 screws holding my left ankle together. Get a strong Texas Blue Norther blowin' through, and not only does the pain often revisit, but sometimes, so does the need to hold the foot at "that" angle to the tibia/fibia axis, holding the pain at bay, so I can sleep. Mr. Heating Pad and his friend the Ace Bandage can often help, in that regard, too. And, yes. Keeping that ankle above horizontal does help to keep the "throbs" at bay. Itinerant Alley Butcher, I don't think there are actual rules defining a maduro, but in practice a maduro is something with a dark wrapper leaf, which can be from several varieties (most often broadleaf, but also habano, sumatra, etc). But all cigar tobacco is cured, fermented, aged leaf - wrapper, binder, and filler.
Posted by: rhomboid Maybe I was thinking maduro received much more ferminttation than others, white Connecticut none... Got some Puro Ambar legacy toros cheap from CI. Wrapper soaked in wine. They seem to be running $450+ to $500+ for new; a very cursory search for used didn't turn up much. Barrels run seem to run from $150 or so up to $180, with a few specialty ones breaking $200. I doubt it's been shot much, as they aren't very fun to shoot. And honestly, I haven't had a lot of one-shot kills on snakes with my Governor shooting .410 (a much better-shooting platform). So I'd be thinking in the 60% to 80% range of new price, assuming near-mint condition, depending on how much of a friend they are. There's not a big market for them. I.A. Butcher, you may be correct. There are maduro versions of many kinds of leaf, so the difference may be how their treated and aged. Theoretically I guess you could have a maduro connecticut. The connecticut wrappers are generally grown differently - shaded by cheesecloth sheets, or in Ecuador simply grown in areas with a high % of cloudy days per year.

Contrary to myth, the Maduro wrapper tends to be milder, in both flavor and strength, than the lighter leafs, and especially the Shade Grown varieties, such as Connecticut Shade.
The grower produces the Maduro leaf, by letting those leafs at the upper end of the stock remain exposed to "more sun", darkening the leaf, which also chemically "consumes" a fair percentage of the nicotines, oils and tars that make for a punchier, more potent leaf. The "lighter" varieties often still contain all their Tobacco Potential, and as occurs, even the weeks in the curing house and years being turned in the bales, don't really sweat all that much out of the leaf. Conversely, Maduro and Dunhill have both mastered the perfect "light" leaf, for beginning cigar smokers. Easy on the palate, and not likely to turn the new smoker green around the gills. 233 I pickle lemons by slicing them as thinly as I can, then put them in a solution containing just a bit of sugar and salt. Leave on the kitchen counter for a week or two, then refrigerate. Not really sure what I'm doing (there's a novel thing!), but it works. I use them on grilled fish or chicken. Also rinse them off, cut up and put in salads.

Posted by: Ben Had ==== I'm sure. Dad sold the farm decades ago before he passed and all I have are memories now. Back when I actively accumulated, now and again I would come across a garden gun specifically for the removal of pests. Low power and the barrels were not rifled for cartridges like the 32 Rimfire to get rid of pests. Yours would be a primo garden gun compared to those. Posted by: Ed L at September 01, 2024 09:34 PM I thought the pit was simulating a fox hole. Only after I heard several instructor stories about the trainee dropping the grenade while cocking their arm back, and the instructor and trainee bailing out of the pit and rolling furiously did I understand it was actually a grenade trap. I prefer getting old stuff on DVD because there's no guarantee that someone in future Hollywood might simply pull old shows and films that aren't politically correct. Or worst, edit them to make them fit the politics of the moment. Combat! is one show that I have never actually seen on tv.
Often filmed at Bronson quarry, my childhood play ground. Catering would bribe us kids to be quiet with slices of pie. Saw an awesome pneumatic volley gun to provide "machine gun bullet strikes" on jeep windshields. Wax bullets. "Combat" often highlighted some very mature concepts, dilemmas and tough moral situations for the soldiers (and viewers) to have to sort out. So, also, did 12 O'Clock High (the TV series).
Conversely, "The Rat Patrol" was only a few steps above Batman & Robin in it's more simplistic approaches and scripting. That said, Rat Patrol had some decent location shooting sites and production values. So, go figure. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at September 01, 2024 09:59 PM (kQgoX) 338

The Army put their thumb on the scale to favor the M14 because SA told them that they could re-use much of the M1 tooling,, which would give them more rifles for the same budget amount.
Well, that was true, except that most of that tooling was badly worn, which caused the quality issues with the early 14s. By the time that tooling was replaced the 14 became much more expensive than the rejected alternatives. Posted by: buddhaha at September 01, 2024 10:24 PM (Pwf7s) 342
