I got interested in Elon's Starlink system, and it just hit me what this is going to be. When fully operational, with the direct-to-cell (the low orbiting satellites can act as a cell tower in space), no government will be able to control it over its territory.
One can communicate no matter what the govt says. Just with a damned cell phone.

The "direct to cell" thing is still being tested, and not all the constellation of satellites have that capability, but the new he's launching all do.
Right now, it's not operational, and testing is "text only". But voice and full data will be available soon. Right now, SpaceX has to "partner" with an actual cell carrier to get it to work right, but I imagine in the future, Starlink can be its own carrier.

No, it won't be WIFI as you think about it, you know low power wireless LAN. It will be cellular frequencies. No 5G, but 4G LTE, eventually with voice, text, and full data.
You also have the dedicated "internet" service using the Starlink ground link stations, which is basically broadband internet via satellite.
The direct-to-cell thing is expanding that to cellular service from space.

Note this is a rotating frame of reference, fixed and rotating with the earth, so the actual orbits will be a bit distorted, doing some odd looking sort of things relative to the ground. This frame is of course what you want to see the ground tracks, where a satellite is relative to your position on the ground. These are very low orbits, so they still move pretty fast easterly, even with the rotating earth.

Years ago I was working for a company that had hit a bad patch financially. The CEO/former CFO gave a speech to bolster moral. I knew the guy and he was smart as a tack. And the speech he gave boiled down to "the investors have plenty more money to give us so we will be fine". And at that point I updated my resume and started actively looking elsewhere. I knew if that was the best a smart guy could up with that this company was screwed.
A lot of the Ukraine news looks like this. Well...with a less charismatic executive but...the same idea.

What you got.was heavily dependent on period. I saw them in the early\mid 80s when they were basically an arena rock band that only differed from the others in Ray's insane onstage charisma and the fact that Dave Davies was the legendary player although he sounded just like everyone else at that point, on purpose. Other points you would have gotten an entirely different thing even though most of the people were the same.

Modern American warfare couldn't countenance the idea of handling a threat by just using cheaper equipment that you can more easily replace and accepting you will lose a lot of them. And ironically the main American battle tank in WWII was no match for what the Germans and Soviets used but...it didn't have to be.

The inadequacy of the Sherman was once pretty much the accepted view, but lately it seems that is being rethought. Sure, the latest German tanks got the hype and one on one they were probably better, but the 76 mm Sherman was the equal of the late Mk IV. In Korea the Sherman did just fine against the T-34\85. And the upgraded Israeli Sherman could go against T-55s. The more you dig into military technology history the more you suspect that often it was more about somebody getting paid then actual superiority

Now for those who like flavored syrup, may I suggest a couple of items? I marinate the syrup, while slowing heating in the microwave in a mug, by adding things like orange or lemon zest, or small pieces of peeled ginger. Once the syrup is warm, I let it 'steep'. Then I strain for serving. The flavor's subtle.

Gettysburg makes sense from Lee's perspective. You are losing the war in the West and via the blockade but if you win a high profile battle in the East it lets you make a pitch to the Europeans that you have a chance and are worthy of support.
Ironically though the South's best change of winning was likely right after Bull Run. They were disorganized from the battle but one could imagine a more effective pursuit after the battle leading to the Confederate taking DC before the Union army could reform.

A little vanilla with the oil, egg and milk is good.

No. It is a metal ring, 2" I.D., 16 threads per inch, with round divots on its outer face to engage a face spanner socket, and 6 slots on its inside diameter to permit a square key to be slid into a keyway on the axle spindle to lock the nut from turning. There is a spring steel ring to retain the key. It is a full floating axle.
The old-school way to do this, which was better, IMHO, had a pair of thin flat hex nuts that fit the thread on the spindle. You would screw the first one in to set the preload on the bearing, the slip in a thin steel washer with a tang for the keyway, and a tab. Then you'd screw on the second nut, tighten it, and bend the tab on the washer over a flat on the nut so it could not back off.
Easy, peasy.

Seems to me the field expedient solution to that would be to replace the ammo in the turret ring with canisters of sand, and have the crew hand the shells up one-by-one from a safe place lower in the hull. Sure, you rate of fire would drop a whole lot, but you might live long enough to use all your ammo...

Look for a GFI outlet that has tripped. If you have a couple of them on the same circuit, they can start tripping for no apparent reason.

Oh, Lord save us. I wonder where in Chicago. The apartments we owned in Chicago are probably not even in the neighborhood and probably weren't big (lucrative) enough for the gang to hit, but it's distressing. We split thirty years ago (at some cost). Still have some family there, God protect 'em.
So much to appreciate about the city, back when. I wonder if the Chicago cops are anywhere near as tough as they were back when we lived there.
I'll keep an eye on Second City Cop blog and see if they have anything on this.

James Darren was also in the '60s Irwin Allen show "The Time Tunnel" (plays early Sat. mornings on MeTV).
He also played Vic Fontaine, this holo-deck Vega Lounge singer type on Deep Space Nine. That was a memorable character. THe holo-character became self-aware, realized he was a hologram, realized the true world he was in, and all that.

Irwin Allen was a hoot. He got dubbed "the master of disaster" doing Towering Inferno, Poseidon Adventure, and that sort of stuff.
With his '60s sci-fi shows, which included Lost in Space, he was a famous cheapskate, reusing his "monsters" in various series.
He also pioneered the Irwin Allen "rock 'n' roll" to simulate a ship/submarine/spacecraft being tossed around. He'd have the camera man shake the camera around, and have the actors all throw themselves around to simulate forces throwing said ship all around.
This was employed in Star Trek TOS famously as well. The Klingons or Romulans would attack, and they'd just shake the camera and have The Shat, Nimoy, and Gay Sulu just throw themselves around the set.

Daddy could've told you one of his favorite stories about a mule when he was a kid. The mule was scared of his own pee spots. He'd piss in a spot in a field, then when coming back would see that wet spot and would freak out over it.
That was when me grandfather was teaching him to plow cotton with a mule. Mules know who's boss and who's the young buck that can be messed with. Daddy was the young buck and that mule knew he could fuck with him.

My own mule story. A neighbor, who likes to do things the Old Way, dubbed Duff (it would take me paragraphs upon paragraphs to properly describe Duff, so I won't even try), got him a mule years ago. I was about 30 something, younger side, late '20s or so, so this would've been about the mid-90s.
Duff had a she-mule, which he dubbed Rosie. He was breaking Rosie in, and asked Daddy if he could walk her over to our place, and walk her around. We didn't have anything planted in the field around the house. Duff wanted to discipline Rose to follow his command and go down the road, then come to our place, and walk around...
He did so, walking about 1.5 miles from his place to ours down the road, with his wife following him in his pickup....

I didn't quite understand why Duff wanted to do that. He had acres and acres he could walk Rosie, but he wanted to do that, and Daddy understood why.
One afternoon he did it. Daddy and I were working on a combine out in the yard, and here comes Duff with Rosie. He comes over and introduces Rosie to us.
Rosie was all tired and sweaty. She got to wallowing around. Me, I'd didn't know nothing about mules. Daddy and Duff laughed at my reaction.
Rosie also laughed at my reaction. She knew I was a pushover, didn't know nuttin', and so she proceeded to mess with me. To the great amusement of Daddy and Duff.
She'd look at me sideways, do all sorts of crazy shit, and at one, time, tried to stick her head under my legs and just throw me for a loop. Duff and Daddy stopped that.
I was amazed at how Rosie would mind Daddy. It had been decades, but Rosie knew Daddy knew how to handle her.
