RIP Johnny Hockey

Johnny-Gaudreau-657353586.jpg

Former Flame and current CBJ star Johnny Gaudreau was killed by a drunk driver last night. Just an unbelievable amount of tragedy for the Gaudreau family, who are known and loved across the hockey world for being just a wonderful bunch. Johnny and his brother Matthew were in town to be groomsmen at their sister's wedding, which was supposed to be today. Last night they were out riding bikes. A car approaching them from behind slowed and moved left to give them more room as it passed, this led the drunk driver behind that car to speed up and swerve right to pass that car. He hit and killed both brothers. Johnny leaves behind a wife and two kids under 2, his brother's wife is expecting their first. Prayers for the Gaudreau family in this time of unthinkable tragedy. #LightingtheLampinHeaven

Tonight's ONT has been brought to you by Ben Franklin:

I thing Ben has the best claim of any of the founders of being the father of the country. Or at least many of its residents.

10 Saw a joke just now that's worthy of the Sat Evening Joke:

Pt 1:
As a bagpiper, I play many gigs. Recently I was asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man. He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper's cemetery in the Kentucky back-country.

As I was not familiar with the backwoods, I got lost; and being me, I didn't stop for directions. I finally arrived an hour late and saw the funeral guy had evidently gone and the hearse was nowhere in sight.

There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch. I felt bad and apologized to the men for being late. I went to the side of the grave and looked down and the vault lid was already in place. I didn't know what else to do, so I started to play.

12 Pt2:

The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around. I played out my heart and soul for this man with no family and friends. I played like I've never played before for this homeless man.

And as I played 'Amazing Grace,' the workers began to weep. They wept, I wept, we all wept together. When I finished I packed up my bagpipes and started for my car. Though my head hung low my heart was full.

As I was opening the door to my car, I heard one of the workers say, "I never seen nothin' like that before and I've been putting in septic tanks for twenty years."

31 different branches of Christianity

The Episcopal Church in which I was raised was much more over to the Conservative side.

When I first met MiladyJo's family, her cousin, a Catholic monk, post-Vatican II, asked about my native church. When I told him, he said, You're more High Church than we are nowadays.

Of course, that was the middle of the last century.

A "sick-call set" used to be a big thing for Catholics. But it's usually a crucifix, not a skull. That's pretty metal. And a bit blasphemous.

Based on what my parents' church is up to these past few years ELCA got pegged right. LDS got left out, and I'm not sure if I should feel good or bad about that.

131 Werner reveres the American Founding Fathers, but is one really to accept that Benjamin Franklin created that particular technique in the treading of Cupid's garden?

That would be akin to claiming that Goethe invented the wham, bam, thank you ma'am practice solely because he indulged in that proclivity from one end of the former Holy Roman Empire to the other. True, he shows up in the lineage of numerous Deutsch families, to the extent that 23 and Me now sells information only about the non-Goethe relatives, but still.

A better illustration, perhaps, would be Martin Luther - simply because he nailed a document to a church door announcing he had 95 problems, but a bishop wasn't one, should we then conclude that he was the father of Rap? Actually, that would be awesome - Werner imagines Luther incorporating this skill in his defense at the Diet of Worms. Yo, shortie, I'm more of a Russian than a Prussian, 'cause I spit hot borscht when I'm crushing these rhymes. More in this vein, then would Martin drop his mike and intone Peace Out, West Side, suckas. Hate not the Luther, hate the game. To the ceiling he would then look, proclaiming much love for YHWH. Ja, that is gangsta.

Rap is ephemeral, yet certain factors of language cannot be avoided. Also, Werner delights at the level of confusion a rapping Martin Luther would create in the Habsburg tyrant Charles V and his inbred court circle. Ja, that is good.

The previously-mentioned "how do you get enough oxygen with only passive 'lungs'" is one.

The square-cube law hits bugs harder: If you scale a 6-foot human up to 12 feet tall, their bones and muscles become 4x stronger because they're twice as wide and twice as deep, but being twice as long doesn't won't bones and muscles stronger. But they're still 8x as heavy overall, so they're effectively twice as fragile as they were. Bones mineralize and chitin does not; so bones are overall stronger and less flexible. So an elephant-sized insect would crush easily, if it didn't just collapse under its own weight. Underwater bugs like shrimp and crabs might fare better, just like whales can be much bigger than elephants.

“Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded — here and there, now and then — are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty.

This is known as "bad luck.”

Let's try to unpack that. "capable of powering 100,000 homes annually" All at once, or one at a time? On a cloudy day, or at night? Peak output, which is almost never reached, might meet the instantaneous needs of 100,000 homes. I'd be willing to bet that, averaged over a year, it will be doing well to supply ten thousand homes, and much of that power will come from natural gas backup plants.

359 There was a famous hiker who walked the length of California, he pretty much ate the same thing every day revolving round "Wilson's Meat Bar", sort of like dried beef or pemmican. Nobody makes anything like that these days, except some very expensive boutique style grass-fed or buffalo bars and hipster stuff.

I like the jalapeno-cheese beef sticks made locally. A good locker is a many splendored thing. The first-generation MRE had a couple meals with freeze-dried beef and pork patties. These were widely reviled, but they were actually a pretty high tech product. They don't spoil, practically ever. If you found one it would still be edible, at least as edible as it ever was. I've eaten freeze-dried meals put up in the 1960s and they are preserved perfectly. On an internet forum somebody bought a huge cache of them from somewhere, at a really great price and intended on flipping them. I think these were LRRPs from the 70s and similar. There are collectors, you see. I suggested keeping them, but what do I know. The retort stuff is excellent but it won't be edible in 40 or 50 years.

I have a dream where the state governors all take custody of any J6 prisoners who are residents of their states, as well as anyone else being held for political reasons. The prisoners can live in their own homes in their own states until trial. And the states will not allow false or stupid charges against these people.

Also, I dream of state governors enforcing a weapons ban against any federal agents within their borders. "Sure, ATF, you can come ask questions of our airport CEO. But you can't shoot him. And you are required to be fair and decent." "FBI, you want to search someone's home? Okay, but you will have chaperones and you will bring no guns."

If you are from the federal government, you are not allowed to carry weapons within our borders. If you are dealing with a truly dangerous person, our own people will accompany you.

384 Well...
Lawn mowers, check. Fixed Steering on '99 Suburban, and washed about 200 pounds of mud out of the chassis. Cleaned a bunch of junk off outside tables to free up work space. Washed about 20 pounds of small rusty and oil parts in the cement mixer. Put an Onan "Powerdrawer" genset back into its drawer.

Short and sweet: "Powerdrawer" was a custom-made Onan genset for those nifty GMC front-drive motorhomes. Genset was mounted on drawer slides within a frame that fit under the body of the coach. Here is a picture:

393 Lewis and Clark wrote in their journals that deer, elk, antelope were in general too lean to keep the men powered. They rendered lots of bear lard and used it to supplement and make savory their diet.

Beaver tail was a favorite among all. On the Columbia side they bought and ate dog and traded for lots of Indian dried powdered Salmon. I think the Indian dog were well fed and fat from all the salmon discards because all the men thought it quite tasty.

Lewis refused the dog meat.

406 Jerky is easy to make, reminds me to buy a bunch of flank steak. Way better than the store bought stuff. It's downright addictive, it is, because you can tailor the flavor profile just as you like.
Teriyaki flavors were big for a while in the 70s, that's nice sometimes. Just a little garlic, ground fresh black pepper and salt is good too, red pepper.
Posted by: It Just Makes Sense Now That I Think About It at August 31, 2024 01:02

Agree, been making my own jerky for yrs, much cheaper and much better. I've tried many marinades, but my go to is simple, 1/2 worchestershire, 1/2 soy sauce and a bit of garlic powder or minced garlic.

409 Earlier tonight wife and I slid over to Golden Corral--I like sometimes to do a buffet and graze rather than a sit down, our GC has proven a winner thus far, a genuinely good place to eat. While we were in line to pay, I noticed a young family (2 kids) the father was wearing fatigues he was from our local Engineer Company. So I stepped up and paid his tab. We wound up sitting with them and had one of the better dinners I've ever enjoyed. I do this now and then because these people are there for us 24/7 period. It is a tangible way to say "thank you". We keep in touch with our people and have managed to assist in different ways anonymously. We OWE them .

411 IRONGRAMPA,

While the rest of the world has (good) reasons to think Americans are loud, brash and rude it is also true, however, that our charity is individual and quiet, not for glory. It's done for the joy of giving. That's the America most don't see, our deeply-felt charitable side. I think it was a part of our DNA at one point but now not so much.

419 I live in the UAE and almost all of my driving is at 160 kmph.

Nothing to see but sand or salt flats. I wish it were 200!

However, I've been in one fatal crash (I was in a bus) and saw another one happen in front of me. I pass a burnt spot in the pavement every work day where a colleague burnt to death in a crash.

Still, looking at sand and salt for hours out of your life is not living either.
