The gap, until after the election, has dire consequences for the Philippines.

The PI is being increasingly pressured, to include sword play, ramming, and water cannons, by the PLAN and PLA Coast Guard. Sovereignty of those islands close to the PI will be lost to China forever if they make one mistake. Loss of the CVBGs means no fast reaction to new incidents. This is a real flashpoint.

I would change the PI ROE to fire when threatened. But without a solid response team, like Harpoon equipped P-8s, the next step is nuclear weapons. Cities in China are 10 MT apart.
One reason the PI and Vietnam have forged closer ties. And Japan & Korea are not liking the new threats and territorial incursions from Red China.

Taiwan, absent excellent OP-SEC from China, is safe for now.

Last night I used the word "mopery," which I also got from catch-22 (along with "breaking ranks while in formation.") and decided to download a copy. I started reading and the first couple pages just suck you in -- it is such good writing.

I have not read it since I was a kid. Maybe 45 years ago. I then realized that my world view of communism was formed by reading Gulag Archipelago, and my worldview of US government from Catch 22. A pretty good foundation, I think.
