So this Gov Kemp in GA has got to be high on the (very competitive, and long) list of disastrously bad GOP governors, right? The Rivian debacle alone should put him near the top. And is there anyone in the country (besides his SoS sidekick) more damaging to rule of law, election integrity, and just the basics of American civic culture? He's as ridiculously unfit and pernicious as the idiots in IL, CO, CA, you name it. Only a country with as much ruin left in it as today's US could survive its GOP voters.

They fought like demons and spooked the Japanese commanders so badly that it made them think they were up against the main force, not against an underpowered and undergunned escort group. Leyte Gulf was not supposed to happen that way. The fleet left behind there was there for routine security, not main battle engagement. Somebody mentioned in the earlier that the “sonar” mystery ping noises are no big deal on Starliner.
Well the truth is they hope it ain’t a big deal. It is something they look at closely. The reason is because of what is called electromagnetic interference, or EMI. This can especially be a problem where wiring bundles to different components are routed close to each other, for example. And everything is close to each other on a spacecraft like that. They had a lot of problems in Apollo getting the bugs out. Turn the interior lighting up or down - relays start clicking for engine firing, stuff like that. And a lot of fears or concerns about pyrotechnics firing off prematurely. They had lots of concerns with that. Posted by: Common Tater at September 02, 2024 12:50 PM (gkbzD) 68

The only modern western country that has, since inception, faced active literally existential threats - and even there, brainless "leftist" idiocy and pathetic lazy complacency thrive, and impose enormous costs in blood. Like America's finances, Israel's security and future may only survive due to the amazingly degraded nature and behavior of others (in this case, Israel's blood enemies). I read on X an Israeli defending the demonstrations. His points were: Nothing is more important than getting the hostages released. Nothing. Of course, that was the philosophy that led to the trade of Gilad Shalit in 2011 for 1,027 Palestinian prisoners. One of those prisoners was Yahya Sinwar. That worked out well, didn't it? Second, if the IDF leadership says that the IDF can withdraw from Gaza and the Philadelphi Corridor, and still keep the Gazans from launching rocket and terrorist attacks on Israel, well you obviously should just trust the IDF leadership. This would be the same IDF leadership who completely failed to predict that October 7th would happen, of course. Well, he chased the bait and nearly lost the Philippines* in the process. Should he have been relieved? I dunno. With the benefit of being from the future, it looks that way to me. But I wasn't there. Maybe Halsey had gotten rafts of bad intelligence for years. I don't know. He had a reputation for being contemptuous of intelligence, but again, I have the tremendous benefit of hindsight. *Maybe. Certainly a massive setback in the Philippines, with a lot of prisoners and dead. Re-reconquest was probably possible, but the Philippines also weren't particularly strategically valuable, so we might not have pursued it. It would probably have been a definitive end for MacArthur, though, which would in turn have had profound consequences for the postwar occupation of Japan and the Korean War. A tax on unrealized gains is IMPOSSIBLE to implement. A candidate just proposed it. Only two possibilities: 1) Said candidate too dumb to understand this. 2) Said candidate (and party) considering their voters too dumb to understand this. There is IMO a substantial amount of democrat supporters who are in complete denial of what the party has become. Their first reaction to this was « she never proposed that ». The Dems have become the bad guys on too many fronts for you to ignore it. Elon Musk @elonmusk 1h Exactly === From a Harvard dick: Jason Furman @jasonfurman Aug 31 I like the Biden-Harris proposal to tax unrealized capital gains. For any given level of capital taxation it's more efficient & fair to tax unrealized gains, reduces lock in & tax planning. The proposal does a thoughtful job of addressing tricky implementation issues. Here is a thread summary (and extension) of a @WSJopinion piece I wrote defending the proposal when it first came out. My favorite description of capital gains is, if you invest, the government gets a cut of your winnings if your investment pays off.
But if you lose, you bear the full losses. A tax on unrealized capital gains is, the government gets to decide how much you could have made. E.G, a few months back, BitCoin was at $72k. It's now at $58k. The IRS will be able to tax you on your unrealized capital gains income as though you had sold at $72k. Even if you held and are now down $14k. Oh, it's not selling at $72k anymore? Idea: Suppose Trump asks Harris to join him in announcing that no matter who wins the presidency, all claims of election fraud by either party will be vigorously pursued and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. If Harris declines, it looks sketchy on her part. If Harris accepts, or not, it puts a proper fear in potential cheaters. That plus large whistleblower awards would give pause to any cheaters. Ja, there is much merriment with the loquacious doggy above. Der Hund's improved vocal ability should terrify us, for it is the opposite of what is expected, the thing that should not be, yet such is not the case. Instead, we are invited to revel, and the valley is not at all uncanny. Thus is the dicta of the perverse Austrian (really, though, is there any other kind) Ludwig Wittgenstein made sport of and vanquished, as we witness a dog speaking, and we are successful in understanding him. Clearly, logic must hold that the same would be true with Wittgenstein's lion, and so is his Austrian iniquity thwarted.

Yes. And I think the Army sent the entire stockpile to Desert Storm, one to use them against Saddam's armor, and two, to get rid of them. A very effective round but with a somewhat limited engagement envelope and hard to use while on offense.

15 So this Gov Kemp in GA has got to be high on the (very competitive, and long) list of disastrously bad GOP governors, right? The Rivian debacle alone should put him near the top. And is there anyone in the country (besides his SoS sidekick) more damaging to rule of law, election integrity, and just the basics of American civic culture? He's as ridiculously unfit and pernicious as the idiots in IL, CO, CA, you name it. Only a country with as much ruin left in it as today's US could survive its GOP voters.

I always assumed, after one or two rounds were fired, and we're trying to get the arty boys to adjust their trajectory, the enemy would be spraying the observation locales, and I'd be dead after about 30 seconds, leaving the artillery blind. Surely KITT conversed with the eminent and estimable King of All Entertainment Media, Knight Rider's David Hasselhoff? Nein?!? The Cosmos giggles and calls Werner a sucker. My confidence that Dr. Phil is a muppet is now shaken as well. Treacherous Universe, does your cruelty know no grounds? Is Victor Davis Hanson your avatar? Werner requires cognac. Hey Salty - I totally agree that there were three things that sank the Japanese in WWII that had absolutely nothing to do with Halsey, and that he wasn't really as good as his press indicates...it was the Marines at Guadalcanal - the JIN's humiliating defeat off the coast of Guam, and the heroics of Taffy 3. You might add in the Killing of Adm Yamato during the flight back from Tinian...Halsey was overly aggressive at times - but in the end he prevailed.

Joe @101, that was Adm. King's daughter, referring to her father's famously stormy disposition - "most even-tempered man I know, he's always in a rage" is the most common version. Halsey could be difficult but was not famously so. And he was plagued by poor staff, at many key junctures (including Leyte, and the first typhoon). One of his deputies known for his temper and not his competence, Myles Browning, was Chevy Chase's FIL.

Halsey's shining moments were the Solomons campaign - which was critical in the duration and cost of war - and his South China Sea raid later (not well known or appreciated). Just the Solomons thing cemented him as a consequential successful commander. When things were dark and US resources skimpy, he properly poured it on anyway.

Posted by: rhomboid at September 02, 2024 02:00 PM (GcNJ2) Halsey was exactly what our navy needed. He never flinched from the mission where others might have. And I understand somewhat why he went all out to destroy those approaching Jap carriers at Leyte. His shortcoming there was he didn't make sure the northern battleship group didn't completely exit the Philippine AO.
