Well, the missile or artillery round aren't reusable. A drone is reusable. It's a choice that throwing it away is worth more than reusing it. But yeah, it's a reusable device used as a single-use weapon instead. It's sacrificed, not "suicide." Kamikazes were "suicide bombers." Throwing away a drone is not "suicide," it's just the cost of war.

The "sacrificial anode" in your water heater isn't a "suicide anode."

If I'm remembering the "Taffies" correctly and Taffy 3 was at Leyte, Taffy 3 was a disaster. Halsey took the Pacific Fleet off in pursuit of - oddly on topic given the conversation - a sacrificial battle group that served no purpose and Taffy 3 was stuck with the choice of "fight and hope for a miraculous outcome, or sit here and die."

They fought like demons and spooked the Japanese commanders so badly that it made them think they were up against the main force, not against an underpowered and undergunned escort group.

Leyte Gulf was not supposed to happen that way. The fleet left behind there was there for routine security, not main battle engagement. Well the truth is they hope it ain’t a big deal. It is something they look at closely. The reason is because of what is called electromagnetic interference, or EMI. This can especially be a problem where wiring bundles to different components are routed close to each other, for example. And everything is close to each other on a spacecraft like that. They had a lot of problems in Apollo getting the bugs out. Turn the interior lighting up or down - relays start clicking for engine firing, stuff like that. And a lot of fears or concerns about pyrotechnics firing off prematurely. They had lots of concerns with that.

Our local news did a short feature on the organization where we adopted our new puppy. The group primarily rescues unwanted and abandoned dogs from the Navaho reservation. The article cited the group as saying there are 500,000 abandoned pets on the Res. That's impressive given that there are only ~175,,000 Navaho tribe members on the reservation.

I am guessing that the group said "five hundred to a thousand" and the voice-to-text changed it to "five hundred thousand".

*Maybe. Certainly a massive setback in the Philippines, with a lot of prisoners and dead. Re-reconquest was probably possible, but the Philippines also weren't particularly strategically valuable, so we might not have pursued it. It would probably have been a definitive end for MacArthur, though, which would in turn have had profound consequences for the postwar occupation of Japan and the Korean War.

Absolutely unbelievable. From some of the Japanese historical record, it appears that the presence of aircraft made the Japanese commanders think there were fleet carriers involved - that is, Halsey had split his fleet - and so they were doomed if they didn't run.

Yeesh... I mentioned this before, we went to a new adoption shelter in Phoenix. The place was lovely and all, but we quickly noticed... most of the dogs were some version of pit bulls, or other large breeds that look like the kinds used for fighting.

Most of the dogs were very aggressive to any humans approaching.

Made me realize how much humans suck.

I only ever saw live rounds fired out of it a few times.

We were told that the most common breed among the reservation dogs are various mixes of Australian cattle dogs, which are favored on the res, especially males. Females are often abandoned or dumped at homes known to be connected to the rescue group.

We got lucky, a two month old female Red Heeler mix who was found alone in a parking lot at about one month old. We have had her for three months now and she has a sweet disposition and gets along like gangbusters with our senior citizen Aussie. She was young enough when found to not have gone full feral, and hadn't been beaten and broken.

I'm told the $13 million plane is Maduro's version of Air Force One, used for state visits around the world, and it was seized in violation of sanctions laws and export controls, specifically, a violation of US executive order 13884, signed by President Trump in 2019.
Per US official, this was the result of a joint investigation between HSI and the US Dept of Commerce.
The plane is a Dassault Falcon 900-EX.
Relations between the US and Venezuela have been very frosty in recent years.

We have had her for three months now and she has a sweet disposition and gets along like gangbusters with our senior citizen Aussie. They used to give us very basic training on how to be a forward observer, walking rounds in on the enemy.

I always assumed, after one or two rounds were fired, and we're trying to get the arty boys to adjust their trajectory, the enemy would be spraying the observation locales, and I'd be dead after about 30 seconds, leaving the artillery blind.

You might add in the Killing of Adm Yamato during the flight back from Tinian...Halsey was overly aggressive at times - but in the end he prevailed.

Halsey was exactly what our navy needed. He never flinched from the mission where others might have.

And I understand somewhat why he went all out to destroy those approaching Jap carriers at Leyte. His shortcoming there was he didn't make sure the northern battleship group didn't completely exit the Philippine AO.
