The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

"A full recovery is expected," Jenn Juzmuk spokesperson for Dr. Anthony Fauci

Hey! I type and delete just like the rest of you Morons.

Quote II

“As meaning deteriorates in the modern world, as our value systems and institutions crumble, all of us become increasingly aware that there is this eerily familiar awakening and beckoning figure that we’ve all known all of our lives within us and around us. And for me, it’s very exciting,” Russell Brand

Quote III

“He is a no-BS person who cuts to the heart of issues no matter how uncomfortable the truth is. I think that that could be really refreshing at the right moment in California.” Technology industry billionaire Chamath Palihapitiya

But, can he win?

Quote IV

“Permafrost soil contains more mercury than all the other soil on the planet, plus all the oceans, plus the atmosphere. So there’s an enormous amount of mercury sitting in these frozen soils where climate change is happening faster than the rest of the world"
Josh West, a professor of earth sciences and environmental studies at USC

It is the Minor League after all. Give Lucy May a year or two and she'll be in the bigs.

Florida team's bat dog to keep her job, despite messy debut

Lucy May's debut was more entertaining than we ever could have

Aug. 27 (UPI) -- A Minor League Baseball team in Florida introduced its new "bat dog" to the public, but the canine ended up being less interested in game than she was in doing her business.

Best of luck, Sir!

Red Lobster has a new leader to right the company following its recent bankruptcy.

Damola Adamolekun, the former CEO at Asian-fusion restaurant chain P.F. Chang's, has been appointed Red Lobster's new CEO to guide the company through its restructuring process, a consortium of investors said Monday.
Red Lobster filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May, after accruing over $1 billion in debt. The company faced a series of setbacks, including rising costs and shifting consumer preferences, Business Insider wrote in May.

Receiving an inheritance is a blessing. To some people my opinion is wrong: "I resent my boomer parents for burning through my inheritance"

A woman has taken a bold stand against her globetrotting boomer parents and accused them of frittering away her future inheritance on luxury holidays and living the high life.

“My inheritance is being drunk through a straw in a coconut in the Caribbean,” she exclaims in a rant via The Daily Mail.

118 Willowed in the previous thread - is that not how it is said? Maybe, ja? Werner drops in briefly to note that he is not the grocery clerk/Jason Bourne hobbyist known as Len Neal. Nor is he Joe Mannix, whose skills exceed my own, and to associate him with my weak japery would be insulting Herr Mannix. Am I Victor Davis Hanson? As a humble film-maker, I do not possess his exquisite taste for cruelty. Hanson rather frightens Werner, much like Aubrey Plaza, whose cuteness is sometimes overshadowed by her propensity for wreaking havoc on all in her way. I have tried often to view the cameo I did in her sitcom Parks and Recreation, but when she appears on the screen, Commander Star Sprinkles and I hide behind the couch. Is the scary lady still on the telly, i ask my animal de compagnie, is the scary lady gone yet? Commander Star Sprinkles is too fearful to look, and both of us crawl our way out of the den for the solace of an Aubrey free environment. The irony, though! Should Victor Davis Hanson read this, he would relish the cruelty which kitty and I have undergone. Frau Plaza was pretty good on Criminal Minds, though, I must admit.

Remember the GOP and Dem cheating assholes in AZ really hate her, so they will try to stop her, even if they don't try to stop Trump.

I'll be watching early vote performance there. If the GOP stays even with Dems in early voting, then she should have a comfortable win.

162 For clarity, I should add that Werner watched Aubrey Plaza's star turn on Criminal Minds the same way he viewed the animation Frozen, with both hands covering my face and peering briefly through slight cracks in the interlaced fingers. Klaus says she is a manic pixie dream girl, but he sees not the true horror, not unlike an internet influencer who poses before the phone camera with an approaching EF-7 tornado swinging by to visit. Werner only has so much stamina - but this is not a family-friendly jauntiness like The Exorcist or Mr. Ed. Ach.

177 It should be noted that with WV already flipped blue-to-red (for all practical purposes), Tester losing would give the GOP a Senate majority, no matter what else happens.

Unless a GOP Senator loses, & none of them are in trouble. ("We're finally gonna take down Ted Cruz this time!!!" In a pig's adz, you are.)

Just having the GOP organize the Senate would inoculate us from a lot of Harris/aWalz worst proposals, i.e., "reforming" SCOTUS.

I think I'd need to know more to have a sense of who is in the right.

I'm gonna inherit next to nothing because I come from poor people. No big deal. It's just life.

But I can say it's harder to build a prosperous life when you start from nothing and have to do everything for yourself. Inherited wealth is an incredible blessing. And I think that kind of intergenerational wealth transfer is how families succeed and prosper in the long term.

Which is a longwinded way of saying that if the parents really are spending every dime and leaving nothing, that's really no different than never having saved anything, which seems reckless, especially if they inherited some of this wealth themselves.

I'm not surprised that a bunch of the most solipsistic generation doesn't care about leaving a legacy to their descendants. Gotta live like the perpetual teenager until you drop dead! Things are getting a lot tougher, especially for the upcoming generations. I'm working on trying to leave enough just so my kids will hopefully be able to live a similar lifestyle to mine, which ain't rich my any means. Without any kind of family assets, this is going to become more and more difficult. They are going to try to push us all into urban bugman hives, living lives of meaningless penury. Had fun watching Worthy in the training camp footage and some preseason time.

I hope he is so fast that he does NOT take many big hits.

I also worry about his hands. I have seen him double-clutch some catches, and he fumbled on a light hit.

334 Monument valley is spectacular, no doubt about it. But, technically speaking, there is no camping there, unless at the designated site. It is an Indian Reservation. Maybe if I got to know some Injuns, you can find some backroads to enjoy a night or two in the monument proper.

But a careful look at the maps surrounding Monument Valley, you will find some roads that aren't in the Monument itself, and camping is allowed. These roads are not necessarily marked, and they aren't suitable for everyone. The exposure is extreme in some places, but the views are incredible. They were old dirt mining uranium or survey wagon roads or something.

I watched a Brit couple w/ two toddlers in a rented 50 foot motor home stuck on a major Utah state park road. It's fine for high clearance cars and trucks ordinarily, just not huge class A stuff. I helpfully allowed that a tow truck was about $500 the last time I saw another couple in a rental car on Elephant Hill, but that was 30 years ago. LOL. Mr. Stuck motor home guy was using an intrenching tool to try and dig out. Not a Happy Camper.

361 Greetings fellow gray-box denizens. Speaking of spending the children's inheritance (spit):

Writing tonight from outside Hill City SD. We spent almost a week in Grand Teton and Yellowstone NPs and arrived here in the Black Hills Sunday. Commenter Pete Bog had kindly advised caution due to grass fires along I-90 but they were out by the time we went through. We did see several miles of burned grassland.

Mt Rushmore is stunning. We attended a very patriotic and fairly woke-free ranger talk and evening lighting of the monument.

Deadwood was a lot of fun. We saw a (pretend) shoot-out, which, being from L. A. was kinda meh when you can see the real thing anytime you want. There is plenty of free parking at the visitor center north end of town and a trolley which can rival Mr. Toads wild ride which takes you all over town all day for $5.

Tomorrow we move on to Badlands NP which is about as far east as we'll get. It's time to lay in a course for home soon.

I think what the kids did, the way she explained it to me they left something on the stove and it didn't start a fire, but she didn't even do anything. This was the predicate or excuse to basically stick her in a nursing home, sell the house and the rest of it. I could smell this before they went through with it. I said "You need a lawyer". And she said I don't have 800 dollars or whatever it was.

Well I never saw her again, they had that house on the market most rikky tik. I couldn't believe it. Some people's kids.

420 Interesting tidbit in the warrant Paxton executed today:
It authorized DNA swabs.

Odd thing for an election fraud case.

If there is more to it, that could be explosive.
Is it tied to child trafficking? No idea.

Also, the outfit raided was LULAC. They are a nasty, far-left org that fronts as nonpartisan. They are a political club, 1st to scream "racist" at any Republican.
If Paxton can roll them up, he'll almost eliminate voter fraud in Texas.

As for Steve Hilton, he can join the ranks of puffed up, ambitious businessmen who'd like to move on from the corporate world and try their hand at running a state for a while. 497 Which is a longwinded way of saying that if the parents really are spending every dime and leaving nothing, that's really no different than never having saved anything, which seems reckless, especially if they inherited some of this wealth themselves.

Interesting take Mixed Feelings. We were recently in a similar situation. My inlaws both passed in 2021.

When Grandma Y. died they were shocked at how much she left them. Most of it was in Standard Oil stock, Grandpa was an accountant there for yrs.

They bluntly said something like...don't expect this from us when we die, we're going to spend it. OK, they didn't have any obligation at all to pass a good amount on, I agree.

It just strikes me as an odd immediate reaction. They didn't earn it but immediately decide we're gonna spend it. Seems selfish and uncaring towards their daughters. My family has been more generous, this was odd to me.

Just trying to share an experience many of us boomers are dealing with. AOS is much cheaper than going to a shrink and you wil prolly get better advice.

NOT a bleg, okay?

All very worthwhile. I have a special feeling for the Vet's services; Veterans Restoration Quarters, and Veterans of the Carolinas, but there is not a ministry that does not merit support. I should add that ALL of the programs are devoted to restoring people to normal self-supporting living circumstances, whatever their problem.

Currently, we are running at an 85% success rate, measured one year after leaving our programs. It can be pretty moving. The other day I ran into a guy from the VRQ and asked how he was doing. 'They saved my life', he said.

I was just thinking with the Polaris Dawn highest altitude gal thing, Elon could have some fun and make money too. When the spacecraft gets to apogee, have the two girls have a competition of who gets to be the highest. Each tries to keep the other 'down" closer to the earth.

Now, do it with very little space clothing, maybe some Wesson oil -- no probably want grease of some kind, don't want liquids. Sell it pay per view. Elon would make enough to pay for the next couple of launches.

Agreed. Also-- if they were poor at managing money before inheriting, they'll burn through it even more quickly.

One of my siblings, for example: Employed full-time, married (non-working spouse), 3 school-aged kids at home, renting a crappy house...juuuust scraping by.

Inherited 100k at age late 40s.

Bought all kinds of gifts for everybody, dinners, crap nobody asked for..
Took a few vacations. Took lots of time-off work. Just basically slothed out and blew through it all in 5 years.

Could've put a down payment on a decent house, but nooooo.

The distinction between Cape Canaveral Space (formerly Air) Force Base and Kennedy Space Center is confusing.

SLC-40 is CCSFB, while LC-39A, which Polaris is going to launch from is KSC.

Well, as I discovered on Monday, an ibuprofen, some stretching and a mild workout, and a hot shower will probably dispel most of it.

Dear Iron, Miss Linda keeps telling me I'm too "German," too rigid on certain things. I retort that the "rigid" people she is pointing to had the highest state of technology and culture in Europe for a long time, a successful if small overseas empire, teachers, philosophers, engineers, and chemists . . . and they came pretty close to whipping the combined might of Europe two separate times in the 20th Century. 535 Is "terrrifying sloth fever" a fever you can get from a terrifying sloth (no other kind, mind you), or is it a fever that terrifies which you can get from a sloth?

Sloths of today are hardly terrifying. But there was once a giant sloth, a huge creature that could reach up and rake trees with its claws. Pleistocene times, South America. Megatherium, Wiki says, and apparently there was at least one "elephant-sized" species. It was probably a plant-eater, though with those claws . . . Anyway, it's been extinct a long time, so I guess it's not the culprit.
