153 What's wrong with the conservation of energy law? Serious question.

When the idea was first proposed, Physicists were very excited that they had learned a fundamental truth about reality. However, it was soon pointed out that gravitational fields didn't conserve energy. Physicists were about to abandon the idea when a ridiculous kluge was suggested: "Potential Energy". BECAUSE PHYSICISTS WANTED THE CONSERVATION OF ENERGY SUGGESTION TO BE TRUE, they accepted that ridiculous kluge. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS POTENTIAL ENERGY, IT IS PURE GASLIGHTING AT ITS BEST.

Today an additional crack has been pointed out. There is no way to reconcile "Conservation of Energy" with the idea of a Doppler shift.

Ugh, I keep hearing people at the office talking about how so and so has COVID. And they all get tested every time they sneeze. Allowing that COVID was dangerous to certain populations during certain strains, the result I'm seeing now is that normal people are afraid to have a cold. And go seek medical attention or testing for things that would have previously warranted soup and lounging. The utterly complete mindset shift around common illness is astonishing.

257 Time in 2019:

The historian Christopher Oldstone-Moore identifies “four great beard movements” that punctuate the history of masculinity — the second century, the High Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the latter half of the 19th century. Arguably we are currently at the beginning of a fifth age, though time will tell whether this is merely a moment of fashion or something more. Certainly beards have been current and widespread for the last 20 years and the term “hipster beard” is idiomatic.

The other popular pills in the 60s for Moms were Purple Hearts, a combination of amphetamine and a barbiturate. From wiki:
Dexamyl was a brand name combination drug composed of sodium amobarbital and dextroamphetamine sulfate (Dexedrine) within the same pill. It was widely abused, and is no longer manufactured.
The pills were purple and heart-shaped.

Sort of.

Smart quotes and odd characters, like accent marks, are okay in the comment boxes now [although they take away from how many characters you can type without getting the message rejected as too long!] BUT the smart quotes [I think unless the few I've seen recently were for other specialist characters?] still go black diamond in in the blog posts!

And there's a new PITA auto-smiley-face emoji. When it's a smart quote followed by a close-parenthesis, it's gives an inadvertent smiley face like the 8 ) giving the one.

In 2012 I escaped there to avoid the sweltering hellhole of my apartment after a hurricane knocked out the power for several days. My motel was in the southern part of Jackson, a suburb if you can call it that. They had a big open-air mall with half the stores closed. Streets weren't too bad. Again, this was 2012.

We've heard since then that they have trouble keeping the tap water running, so I have no desire to go back.
