Organic Tree Farming is not for the faint of heart nor the faint of ankle! I stepped on a rock and my ankle rolled in a way it was clearly not designed to do. Anyhoo, I drove home and went to an urgent care place for an x-ray and I'll be visiting my ankle guy tomorrow for an MRI. In the meantime, it's a delightful shade of black and blue and purple, and I'm keeping it elevated, using ice and taking drugs. Think I'll go operate some heavy machinery! Actually I will likely just be snoozing, so please forgive me if I am not in the comments much tonight. Appreciate it! With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we? FUNdamentals Q: Weasel, since you're lame-o, do we get a week off from fundamentals? A: No. What is your favorite fundamentals drill? Your least favorite? Several of you are reporting great results after focusing on fundamentals at the range. Not getting the results you want? Slow down and figure out what's going on. Doing the wrong thing harder never helps the situation. Stop what you are doing and focus! Guns of the Weasel ![]() WeaselBuddyGeoff Our pal and my bestest buddy WBG joined me at the farm this weekend and brought with him a new moving target we hope to incorporate into the Move & Shoot portion of the TXMoMe festivities this year. Ok, folks, Weasel isn't going to be here much, and if he's on the good stuff, his vision is going to be blurry, since his focusing will be off. What does that mean for us? Watches. Big watches. Go grab your 44 or 45 mm watches and flaunt them. He won't be able to tell the difference. Heck, get that 50mm that you've been hiding at the back of the safe behind the .357 Sig, .41 AE, and .45 GAP ammo. Reports from Bob from NSA indicate that everyone was wearing pants in today's Book Thread, meaning Perfessor Squirrel has sucessfully indoctrinated/intimidated everyone. Went to the range today w/ Sharon and Iris from the DMV MGC. I brought out my new B&T BWC-9 for its first test run after zeroing. The BWC-9 is a pretty unique forearm in that it is a folding pistol caliber carbine that folds up so that it looks like a metal block. To the untrained eye, it looks like anything but a gun. The BWC-9 is actually a chassis for a SIG P320 fire control unit, slide, and barrel assembly. You have to register the FCU as a short barrel rifle before you put it all together. The chassis comes with an Aimpoint Accro P2 red dot to help your aim. The whole setup is pretty accurate. It's possible to stack rounds on the target at 10 yards (if the shooter can hold it steady). Both Sharon and Iris liked it. Downsides are 1) the price ($2k plus for the chassis), 2) you can't carry on a loaded chamber when the gun is folded up, 3) the magazine is only partially inserted in folded position, requiring you to smack the magazine home and rack the charging handle when deploying the weapon, and 4) the charging handle isn't the most ergonomic. Still, it's an interesting and unique firearm from the top boutique firearms manufacturers in the world today.

Did a fundamentals exercise at the range - stapled four paper plates on the cardboard target at 7 yards. Four bullets, one per plate. Shoot, acquire new target, shoot, acquire new target, etc. Try to hit center of each plate. No set max time limit, but need to move things along. Challenging and humbling. Grateful crushed it.

Posted by: Pillage Idiot at August 25, 2024 07:19 PM (HlyYF) No dent in the actual numbers. I can't take head shots yet. (And I'm not sure a clay 1/2 inch bb will kill any of them.) But They know a predator lives here. I launched one of them the other day - hit him in the backside and he went about 5 feet in the air and tried to stay there. I was laughing too hard to take the airborne shot. I made one a gimp, limping to the other side of the road. I do think this is only going to increase my strong-side shooting. Not going to help my two-handed, at all. Posted by: GWB at August 25, 2024 07:28 PM (CrXxA) 61

Hint: You don't. Posted by: Duncanthrax ====== Absolutely correct. Magazines are like ammo, they are expendables for all but safe queens. Some become more useless quicker than others so you need more of those in supply. Even the safe queen models, load up on spare springs, bottom plates (if available), and followers if you can. Also clean them now and again and lubing them very lightly does wonders to keep them up and running. Posted by: whig at August 25, 2024 07:31 PM (kW+z9) 74

Have you and Grateful tried using IPSC targets in your competition? IPSC targets offer the shooter a choice along similar lines. You can go for the 5 point areas of the target for max score, or you can choose to accept hits just outside the max score area (3 points instead of 5 if you're shooting 9mm) and complete the course of fire a bit faster. Go above a certain time threshold and you'll lose points. Toss in limited exposure of the target, and this gets challenging very quickly. Posted by: Ed L at August 25, 2024 07:31 PM (yRXSd) 75

The gun thread seems to focus on high end guns, collectibles, and big guns. I don't see a lot of conversation about modest priced and small guns.
Let's face it, a small gun is easier to conceal and not as much of a burden to carry daily, but then you're limited to micro 9s, .380 or smaller. It's interesting that today's topic touches on that. 82 Without much forethought, I became the proud owner of a brand-new Springfield Armory SA-35 this week. I sent Weasel the (mostly) true story of how that came to be, which he may or may not choose to post sometime. At any rate, in my opinion it is one beautiful gun. Photos and videos don't really do it justice. You have to see it and hold it in your hand to appreciate what a work of art it truly is. I'm going down to the farm the end of next week and hopefully will have a full range report. If it shoots as well as it looks, I'll be one happy little cowpoke.
Posted by: That SOB Van Owen --- What a coincidence, I got one of those myself 3 weeks ago! Also with no forethought! I put 100 rounds through it last week and it performed absolutely flawlessly. Not with the Max specifically but we have a first gen LCP that was the wife's EDC for a few years until I convinced her to upsize to a S&W 442. It's not exactly a fun gun to shoot but it never gave a bit of problem and ate everything we put in it. Posted by: Oddbob at August 25, 2024 07:44 PM (/y8xj) 111

Posted by: OneEyedJack at August 25, 2024 07:38 PM I do, I have both and have shot and carried them both and I am looking to sell my Ruger lcp max. The bodyguard 2.0 is what all of the compact .380s should have been 10-15 years ago. If Glock didn't have this fixation on supersized thick a$$ plastic magazines they could have come up with something other than the G42. Matter of fact I am hoping they are redesigning the G42 into something closer to the bodyguard 2.0. Posted by: Mister Scott (Formerly GWS) at August 25, 2024 07:44 PM (QNSds) 112
Why yes Weasel. I went to the range today. Only three of us but lots of shooting time and for some unknown reason the range was almost empty so we were able to start almost immediately. I brought t he two Glocks and the Kimber today. Had some jams with the G48 last time and Ed suggested cleaning the mags which I did and had no issues. Got to shoot Ed's new purchase and the red dot made hitting the target easy especially being able to anchor the gun in my shoulder.
When I pulled out the Kimber, the battery for the red dot was dead so I shot using the iron sight. Had no problem hitting the target at 10 yards, farther than usual. A nice surprise. Followed by a great steak at the Texas Roadhouse. Range Sundays are the best! Stay away from the Bodyguard as S&W, to my regret, today is uneven in manufacturing quality. If you want a reliable and flat single stack--Look for a Springfield XDS-9mm. Made for several years up to and including the most recent version that allows red dot mounting (XDS Mod 2). Anyway, range report: Yesterday was the club 500 meter silhouette shoot. Five targets at 200, 300, 400 and 500 meters for a total of 20 targets.
1 shot per, target must be knocked off the rail. But wait, there's more! The wind was blowing hard enough to move the cross hairs off and on the target, depending on the hold. In fact, to hit the 500 meter sighting disk, I was holding about 2MOA to the right off the target and caught the left edge of the target. The wind was strong enough to move a 178 grain bullet about 6MOA to the left. Made life interesting. On my way to the match, I had a brief moment of panic when I realized I'd left my wind meter and ballistics app at home. But, I had my low tech log book with me with correct elevation listed. Having the proper elevation meant I only had to figure the wind which I was mostly able to do. I managed to do surprisingly well, scoring 15 out of 20 and beating out a couple of our more experienced shooters. I didn't go to the range this week (which means I need to dry fire this evening), but I did use my CC fanny pack for the first time. I bought it hoping it would be more comfortable than the Liberty band to carry the P365 for running and hiking.
This pack is from the "Lena* Collection" and I got a Velcro backed holster from CrossBreed to go in it. The pack itself won't hold much more than your gub, ID, phone, maybe a chapstick and a little folding money. It can be worn at the waist or cross-body; I like it at the waist for running/hiking but otherwise would probably go cross-body. It needs to be snug, so you can draw from the holster if needed (and to prevent too much bouncing while running). But is fairly comfortable and doesn't restrict my movements. I'm used to having a lumbar pack or just a phone pouch around my waist when hiking/running so aside from the still unfamiliar feeling of carrying, that wasn't an issue. My one complaint is the clasp is way too close to where you adjust the strap, so it's easy to undo it when you don't want to. Adjust straps first, then holster the gub to avoid a lot of fiddling around and potential drops! *Miculek not Dunham Posted by: screaming in digital at August 25, 2024 07:49 PM (iZbyp) 129

FWIW, for me, the sweet spot for 9mm to be pleasant enough to practice with is about 24-25 oz. or more. A 40 or 45 feel in a subcompact feel better in recoil over 30 oz.

“ Let's face it, a small gun is easier to conceal and not as much of a burden to carry daily, but then you're limited to micro 9s, .380 or smaller.”
The Colt Defender is barely 6.7 inches and it’s .45 ACP. The P365 is less than an inch longer and higher. Notwithstanding the .45 vs 9mm argument, it can be easily concealed. The challenge is you have to practice putting rounds on target constantly, and stay with .45 to ensure consistency. Posted by: Marcus T at August 25, 2024 08:01 PM (bxCZE) 170

AIM Surplus has 15-round Browning High Power magazines from MEC-GAR for $25 each. The nickel plated 15-round magazines are $28 each. Those are decent prices compared to contemporary pistol magazines which run $40-50 each.
Posted by: Ed L ====== I buy from AIM quite a bit. Good folks and they do carry when available some of the old milsurp rounds like 6x55 Swede, 303 British, etc. in Prvi Partisan. If regular BHP mags fit, MecGar are the ones you want. Their nickel plated ones are a bit nicer for an additional buck or two. And you don't need the ridiculous mouse trap Browning BHP mag if there is no mag disconnect.

I like my micro 9 too, but mine does not say custom shop.
About my only complaints are: magazines don't want to go in without pressing release, slide safety is a little stiff/hard to flip, and my magazine like the one in your picture fell out. I think for the mag inserstion, I need to taper the underside of the catch. For the mag not latching, I saw on the intertubes that the plastic piece on the bottom of the mag sits up too high and doesn't allow it to catch. Need to either shim it down or sand some off the top. RI Red, Weaselsan Gunsei has put me in the knowledge of the way of the cartridge.
I'm shooting up the last of my 178 grain stuff so I can switch to Hornady's 174 grain ELD-VT. The accuracy of the round in my rifle is phenomenal when I'm pushing the round to 2880 fps. I ran the numbers through my ballistic app and it showed 5 MOA less elevation than the 178 @ 1,000 yards and it proved out. I was surprised a slightly lighter bullet was that much better than the 178 Hornady ELD-M. I'd love to push something heavier but the speed of the 174 grain stuff makes up for it not having the BC of heavier bullets. Of course, I say that now and may very well be singing a different tune in 6 months. Not much of Taurus, ruger, s&w etc. Foreign made point metal stuff even I'm not interested in, and I'm notoriously "frugal", but not stupid. Posted by: OneEyedJack --------- I have three rules for serious social occasion tools---reliable with my chosen self defense ammo, plentiful and cheap mags as for a serious carry piece, 6 is a bare minimum, ten is preferable, and widespread parts availability for things like recoil springs, mag springs, pins, etc. I've shot Taurus revolvers, their version of a 1911, a couple of their plastic fantastics from yesteryear, but do not have one of them. Reason is parts availability. So my revolvers are Smith and Wessons or Rugers. I prefer Springfield Armory for its plastic fantastics as they fit my hand better than Glocks, and I prefer Smith and Wesson Third Generation in DAO for current carry. Their trigger is similar to Smith and Wesson tuned double action revolvers and they prestage the trigger on the 5946/4046/4586 like Glock did but still are drop safe. A simpler manual of arms is usually better unless you practice a helluva lot on just manipulation of controls. Posted by: whig at August 25, 2024 08:15 PM (kW+z9) 201

202 No NIB firearm should come with only one mag. IMO.
Posted by: Notorious BFD Mags are one of the profit centers for selling price competitive firearms. That is why the price of additional mags which is an imperative should always be figured into the price of the firearm if it is for serious work. You train heavily in competition including things like Tactical reloads, etc., then you need at least ten magazines because dropped mags on hard surfaces don't always do well. Range only trips without the hard stuff, you can get by with six or so. One of the advantages of popular service type firearms is that mags are more plentiful along with repair parts for the long haul. Posted by: whig at August 25, 2024 08:22 PM (kW+z9) 212
My first BHP was Belgian mfg around 1970, it was a fine gun but had to downsize to a S&W snubby for reasons. My second BHP is a 1949 model and lives in the safe. Are there any tips ou there for getting this right? Posted by: Nato at August 25, 2024 08:25 PM (ciuRb) 224
I've now bought 3 new firearms myself and each one has come with a different # of mags. RI 1911 had one (really shitty) mag - the gub itself is awesome, the P365 had 2 10 round mags (but it's easier to shoot with a 12 round or larger), and the SA-35 had 4, which I now feel *very* smug about, but will still follow the advice to pick up more!

I will again make my pitch for Made in Turkey clones of the 1911 and BHP. Get them while you can, because you never know when international events might cut off the supply.
One thing I discovered about the Girsan copy of the BHP, the models with the traditional curved triggers have the magazine disconnect. "No problem!" I hear you say. "The interweb is full of videos on how to remove it! It's easy!" Nope, the standard Girsan uses the "Mark 3" trigger design, which is much more difficult to remove. The cure for this is to buy the Girsan "Match" models, which don't have a mag disconnect. They can be quickly identified by their straight triggers. 192 My Kimber 911 is a 9 mm and I've been pretty satisfied with it and ammo is cheaper so there's that. It came with a red dot so was on the expensive side but can be had more reasonably without. I just like the weight and feel of the gun.
Posted by: sharon(willow's apprentice) at August 25, 2024 08:11 PM (t/2Uw) Hi Sharon. Speaking of 9mm being cheaper, I caught a PSA sale of Norma 108gr hollow points that came out to about 35 cents per round. If you get free shipping, I think that's reasonable. Some people prefer a heavier bullet for self defense, but like was said tonight, no one would volunteer to get hit with one (I like that saying!). Posted by: Reforger at August 25, 2024 08:29 PM (xcIvR) M9 magazines made by Check-Mate (should say so right on the magazine body along w/ month and year of manufacture) had problems in Iraq and Afghanistan because the phosphate finish on the first production run (2004-5) allowed the "moon dust" commonly found in both places to accumulate on the body of the magazine. This allowed dirt and dust to enter the pistol's mechanism and jam both the magazine and pistol. Many of these magazines were pulled from service as soon as replacement magazines fixing the problem were available. This won't be a problem 90+ % of the time stateside. But if you have these magazines, you might want to think twice before using them in some serious tactical training course. Posted by: Ed L at August 25, 2024 08:47 PM (yRXSd) 265
My boy stopped by yesterday with two cigars. He said I could pick, but he did say which one he preferred (he had already tried one of them and really wanted the one he hadn't had yet) lol, so of course I took the one he didn't try yet.
Kidding! So the one I was stuck with was sickly sweet. I have no idea what brand and I didn't care. It was worse than the old Swisher Sweets from my mis-spent yute. It was a 'fancy' one from a cigar shop too. Yuck! Posted by: haffhowershower at August 25, 2024 08:47 PM (NMT5x) 266
Took the boys (18 and 16) for some range time yesterday. Had a nice 1/2 inch group at 100 yds with my AR - cheap ammo, so could've been a favorable distribution, but I built this for precision, so encouraged. Then switched to my scoped 10/22 at 25 yds - after .223, the 10/22 sounded supressed by comparison. I need to practice with the AR a bit at 200 yds - there's a precision rifle group at the range, does informal matches with scaled targets at 200 yds, would like to join up.

When Gander was going toes up they kept marking down firearms every 3 to 5 days, and when they got closer to closing out firearms totally you had to check daily. I was looking at the HK P30S-V3S at around $1K, then it was sliding downward. I told the guy I'd be back tomorrow and he said it'll be gone. When I walked in at the opening bell, I couldn't see it.

Posted by: GWB at August 25, 2024 08:49 PM (CrXxA) Another alternative would be the Beretta 81 (.32 ACP). I picked up an Italian police surplus model at the last gun show for $575. Good shooter, mild recoil, and has a 12 round magazine. Both Sharon and Iris agree that it's quite manageable even for new shooters. Even though it's out of production, Beretta USA still has spare magazines for sale for $50 each. Not cheap, but OEM magazines for an out of production gun from the original manufacturer is pretty rare. Posted by: Ed L at August 25, 2024 08:56 PM (yRXSd) 277

My nephew's Jericho 9mm came with only one magazine as well; I've bought one 'sample' replacement magazine for him for it [a CZ type IIRC] that fitted and ejects alright. I haven't bothered getting any more until 1] seeing if a change of government means he can keep and use it; and 2] conditional upon #1, testing it at the range to see if it is compatible.
The 1969 69C High Power only came with one magazine as well. [That auto ejects.] I've bought three more less expensive ones that are manual eject [Cdn $40 IIRC] and one auto eject that was much more expensive, Cdn $65 IIRC. Posted by: andycanuck (c39uV) at August 25, 2024 09:30 PM (c39uV) 311

Time for good evening wishes. Thanks horde and best wishes for a Weasel recovery. Grateful and I are detailed to undisclosed locations for the next two weekends, so the gub thread will have to carry on without us. See you on the other side.

GI magazines are almost always ridden hard and put away wet. The supply system considers them expendable and they're treated as such.
Posted by: Ed L at August 25, 2024 09:31 PM (yRXSd) I've still got 7 AR mags from my time in. They wouldn't take them when I got back from Somalia. My unit was still there when I ETSed. Posted by: Reforger at August 25, 2024 09:40 PM (xcIvR) 316
One should get additional magazines asap to any weapon.
I even have 2 speed loaders for my Colt revolver Posted by: Skip at August 25, 2024 09:43 PM (fwDg9) 317

You mentioned McCormick 1911 mags to me. My stupidly expensive Wilson mags suck donkey cock in my carry piece. My McCormicks function flawlessly! Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at August 25, 2024 09:45 PM (d9fT1) 318
I got nothing, but I'll throw in a comment to help bump up the count, so Weasel doesn't have to limp into the Big Guy's office in the morning for an ass chewing.

Posted by: Ed L at August 25, 2024 09:31 PM (yRXSd) There are some unissued USGI 1911 magazines floating around on the market that are no-kidding Government rejects (which I think makes them not actually GI) so proceed with caution. Checkmate made some good GI 1911 magazines, which were sold by the CMP, but they were snapped up years ago. Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at August 25, 2024 09:46 PM (6cZhR) 320
My "throw-away" truck guns are .380's. Well, two of them are. The M&P not so much. One is in a bugout bag and the other is in my wife's car. The bugout bag is really a portable fireproof lockbox. Full of valuables, documents and stuff that might be necessary in the burning times.
And a small, pocket .380 and about 200 rounds. I think it's almost a necessity these days to have disposable weapons. Those you don't cry over losing. Or at least cry less. Posted by: Martini Farmer at August 25, 2024 09:47 PM (Q4IgG) 321
That mud may be what's holding the frame together.
Posted by: Eromero at August 25, 2024 09:13 PM (LHPAg) No, this is a rust-free rig, bought in Utah. Its first life was as crew truck for a mine in Nevada. That may be the source of the mud. Other than the mud, it's super clean under there. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at August 25, 2024 09:48 PM (iciH7) 322

Inexpensive options:
I really like my Taylor & Sons 1911A1 (RIA clone) of the base GI model. PSA has them under $300 periodically. It helps me keep the ergonomics and muscle memory for the 1911 platform without putting the wear on things at the bottom of the lake. We have a pair of Taurus G2Cs that have eaten everything we have fed them over the last 4 years. The were also $400 or less. The LCP2 is from back when they were $250 (several years ago). The recent Kimber R7 (Mako) was also $400 with 6 mags but we had to drive several hours since that wasn't available locally. It's a nice shooter. And BTW.....the PSA AR kits are super easy to assemble and quite reasonable for under $400. Posted by: chappyman66 at August 25, 2024 09:50 PM (L3byd) 324
Aaah! Nice and clean now, and there are smokies on the grill, and a beer in the coozy. (soon to be in me)

I'm back. As usual spent more time hunting down the snap cap that took a weird bounce/roll...
Taking some notes for the possible SC MoMe based on the comments I saw. Please feel free to email me, although I have no idea yet what might be happening, when or where, it does help to know who is interested and what ideas you have. AOP, I thought of you today.
A while back my air compressor was making a weird noise and wasn't compressing air either. It's a Craftsman oilless. Long story short, last year I needed mid/high capacity in a hurry so found this on Craigslist. Other than it's normal noise, it worked. Pulled the plastic shroud off and discovered that the connecting rod had broken in half! And whatever bearing or whatever that should have been on the flywheel end is nowwhere to be found. Just a bolt holding on to some small piece of metal. I don't think it's worth the repair. If it was just the piston seal, then maybe... I have one of the much-maligned Remington R-51 9mm pistols. Mine is from the second generation, the ones that actually functioned.
I'm glad I got a half dozen spare magazines for it as soon as I bought it, as there won't be anymore made for it. Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at August 25, 2024 09:55 PM (6cZhR) 330

Posted by: Reforger at August 25, 2024 09:40 PM (xcIvR) I had the same experience when I came back from OIF and OEF. Nobody wanted the GI M4 magazines back. So they're sitting in my GI footlocker w/ a bunch of other stuff. Posted by: Ed L at August 25, 2024 09:57 PM (yRXSd) 334
Watched a video couple hours ago on arrow wounds, he mentioned arrows are no where as fatality as bullets. They really need to hit vital points or it's a long time to bleed and stop the person. .
Posted by: Skip at August 25, 2024 09:11 PM (fwDg9) People who aren't bugfuck nuts are pretty averse to getting extra holes in them. That's why no one is volunteering to stand in front of as little as .22 short. But the psychological damage of seeing an arrow in you might instill panic in a person who is normally calm. Takes a lot to remain calm in the face of actual peril. At any rate, that's why I think almost any caliber of firearm can buy time or defuse a deadly situation in almost all cases. If the goal is self defense, a bad guy running away after being shot by a .380 is as good as a one shot kill with a .44 mag. If the goal is punishment... Posted by: haffhowershower at August 25, 2024 09:54 PM (NMT5x) It's amazing how useful oil is... Those oilless compress are very noisy, and they don't last well at all. Back in the '90's, when I worked for Sperry-Sun Drilling Services, we used oilless compressors for the air supply for our gas detectors and chromatographs. Had to be oilless, because oil traces would muck up the instrument readings. Nearly always carried a spare in the logging unit. I'd recommend getting an oil-lubricated compressor. Even a 50-year old one will work, and they are rebuildable. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at August 25, 2024 09:59 PM (iciH7) 337

.380 vs. 9mm isn't an important discussion. What's important is to find the gun that you like to shoot. Because then you'll want to shoot. And then you'll shoot a lot and become proficient and accurate. Then, when you hit someone center mass, because you've been practicing and shooting that gun to the point it's second nature to you and you don't really have to even think about it, it will not matter at all what caliber you used. That person will immediately reevaluate their priorities away from you.
