I woke from a double nightmare (described on the ONT). I'll say only that in it, the announcement came that we'd have to mask again "starting Tuesday." Yes, my dreams are very specific about details.
In waking life, the coffee tastes odd; possibly that vile Truvia sweetener, which I'd mixed in with some of the pink envelope stuff. And the pipe I packed last night and lit this morning -- either it was not a good mix, or I puffed too fast and it got hot, or the coffee affected the taste. Not a good start to a morning where I got less sleep than I should last night. Meh. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at August 22, 2024 04:18 AM (omVj0) 13

As I said, this was not based on my original reporting; I was referring to reports I had read, in Axios and Reuters, about former President Trump having spoken to the Israeli Prime Minister. Yashar Ali 🐘 @yashar 14h One of the reasons the Obamas are such compelling speakers goes back to a skill that all great speakers have: the confidence to pause. It allows the audience to absorb the information that’s just been shared and also gives space to bring about a sense of anticipation. It takes great confidence to push past the fear of silence. I saw where Ben Had asked for a kitten update, but it was late when I saw it.
So, all four kittens are doing excellent. Maximillian, with the barn name of Frog is by far the largest at almost 3.75 pounds. His sister, Margo who will also be coming home with us after the wedding at the end of next month is every bit the little lady, and probably about a pound less than him. We visit them daily, and they seem to be welcoming of both of us. Particularly Mrs VIA, who seems to have some sort of feline magnetism, causing them to stick to her. No, profit is your top priority. Any other statement is an obvious lie. "The database will now require you to log in with Windows Hello to access it, where before it was an all-you-can-eat data buffet for any application running on your computer." 1) Locate the service in the Services panel that runs this screenshotting thing and/or database, and disable. 2) Locate the database and delete it. 3) To be extra sure, set up a task that runs in the Windows Task Scheduler, and have it shut off the service AND delete the database. Under the Advanced options for the task, set it to run every minute. Firewall administrators: Here's the link to the "Microsoft 365 URLs and IP address ranges" web page: https://is.gd/mizBbZ At the bottom of that in the "Related Topics" section, there's another link: "Microsoft Public IP Space". Click on that, and download the .CSV file that contains every Microsoft public IP range on the net, IPv4 and IPv6. The first column contains the IP addresses, which can be copied to a text file and used as an alias in your firewall to block access to them (This is a nice feature in pfSense.) Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at August 22, 2024 05:43 AM (omVj0) I think it's possible that one of the reasons Trump's rhetorical style works for many people (despite detractors) is that he doesn't have one... When he's doing a rally speech, at least, he's basically just Talking Like Donald Trump, but louder. It's the same as how he talks in a sit down interview. Rambly, mid-sentence course corrections, assuming the listener is already on board with the gist of a sentence three words in and then veering off onto some other tangent... Say what you will about it, but it probably has the effect of signaling "This is not Rhetoric. I'm just talking, here". Which may be intentional, or may not be. -- A big part of the nation still hasn't grasped that the same people shot one POTUS candidate in the head immediately before forcibly removing the other POTUS candidate from the ballot, both not even six months prior to the election. Thankfully we have pretty airheads to read scripts for us and explain why everything is fine. Posted by: Moron Robbie - FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT at August 22, 2024 06:28 AM (RBbp4) 95
We have the fattest, best clothed, fanciest rolling ‘poor’ people in the world.

"80% of people would be much more comfortable having some pretty airhead reading a prepared script about something over an experienced, intelligent, rough-looking elderly fellow tell them exactly what he knows."

CrowdStrike has another issue--with some of the computers in one department, they added a registry key that makes the USB ports stop working.

That actually kind of makes sense. *tugs at own face to be sure* Posted by: Warai-otoko at August 22, 2024 06:34 AM (BAEGB) 101

Biden doesn't have time for that. He's too busy running the country. Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at August 22, 2024 06:34 AM (a1415) Posted by: Moron Robbie - FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT at August 22, 2024 06:35 AM (RBbp4) 103

The OC Md tram is a 4x4 that pulls trailers with bench seating. In some sections, it uses the same walkway as pedestrians. It is incredibly stupid. The city will be sued into oblivion.

Best to learn about Barky's speeches would be find Dennis Prager analysis. He would say it's better to read them than listen. It was really a long string of words that often ment nothing. Quite flowery, bet if you read it you would have no idea wtf he is talking about.
Posted by: Skip at August 22, 2024 05:28 AM (fwDg9) This. Rush used to talk about this and play examples. Lofty speeches that said nothing. Without a teleprompter, Barky couldn't speak well at all. Posted by: Dr Pork Chops & Bacons at August 22, 2024 06:51 AM (g8Ew8) 109
@108/Dr Pork Chops & Bacons:
I've always wanted someone to hack the teleprompter and replace it with Vogon Poetry, or perhaps the lines in Babylon 5 when Marcus realized Ivanova wasn't listening to him: "There's always the threat of an attack by, say, a giant space dragon, the kind that eats the sun once a month. It's a nuisance, but what can you expect from reptiles? Did I mention my nose is on fire, and that I have 15 wild badgers living in my trousers?" >Microsoft is planning to try again
Microsoft plays the long game and never gives up on anything that makes them money. Anything they back down on was a tactic, not a goal. Look at the Xbox One launch and the hoops you had to jump through to transfer a disc-based game to another owner. The goal there was to stamp out the used game market. They backed down on the tactic and pivoted to subscription-based gaming instead, which achieved the same goal. So watch what they're doing with AI - the goal there is to harvest your data for more effective advertising. The next tactic won't be as obvious.
