  • AMD is buying server manufacturer ZT Systems for $4.9 billion. (Serve the Home)

ZT Systems is one of those surprisingly big companies you've never heard of. Been around for 30 years, sells $10 billion worth of servers a year, completely under everyone's radar.

AMD plans to buy them, split the engineering team from the manufacturing business, and then sell the manufacturing part to one of the even larger competitors.

12 The metal salts that are colored have the purest and beautiful colors. It's the reason I love crystals and find colored jewel stones more lovely than diamonds.
Trying to remember some pigments for water-based paints: cadmium sulfide CdS is a beautiful pure yellow. Arsenic makes green. Vanadium is named after the goddess Vanadis because vanadium salts display such wonderful colors. Lead sulfate is white but forms lead sulfide with dirty air containing H2S and becomes black. Can be converted back to white sulfate by wiping the painting with hydrogen peroxide (let an expert do this otherwise you'll end up with another 'Ecce Homo' fresco.
Sorry, got carried away here.

17 My old TV is giving me some odd graphical issues. Still works, mostly. Every now and then, I'll see red blotches. I'm overdue for a new TV. This one was a hand-me-down and it's around 15 years old. A cheap, Walmart, RCA TV. I look online occasionally. Maybe I'll swing by Walmart and see what they have. The local Walmart is an adventure. I went there last week, and it was like a trailer park UN.

(No offense to trailer parks. Might wind up living in one someday.)

18 Today I have some major work to do paying people money we owe them. And I have to clarify with my boss the policy about paying some others. I've understood they were to get $nnnn their first year, and half that the second. Last week one of my colleagues met with our boss, and she says he's decided they will get the former total amount right up front, and can apply for payments for research-related travel and expenses on a case-by-case basis beyond that. I don't need to apply the new policy (if there is one) quite yet, but I'd like to know before one of the people asks me.

Only took 1.75 hours to change out the Volvo blower motor and resistor. New one runs nice and quiet too.

And by my estimation, with todays all, followed by mowing the yard later today, that should drop my weight from 200.8 to below 200 pounds. That will be the first time in 14 years that I have been below that. And a continuing slow march down to 180, if I can stay on track.

It's do or die for them now. Joe and Hunter and their family have been shown to have taken something like $37M in bribes, I assume tax free. Certainly laundered. I have no doubt there's a paper trail leading to Hillary, Obama, Harris, etc. If vengeful Trump takes office with Vance and a nation with a sense of morality and justice is shown how far down we've fallen...

This is probably the most dangerous election the nation has ever seen.

74 addendum: And there's no good outcome. Trump wins and is certified and the nation is thrown into turmoil while the attempt to remove the cancer begins. Trump wins and isn't certified again? I think it's because we're not a serious nation any longer. I don't mean that as a joke. The police aren't going to do anything, so they can pass by violence and crime on a $7000 bicycle just as easily as they can a $60K car.

93 I know a few people who built fusors in the late 1990s, it puts you on a select list of people who have achieved fusion

considered it myself but it was a little bit too much of a vanity project for me (costs maybe $100K)

I followed polywells since that time, they didn't get very far but a related high-beta effort (FRCs) by Helion is now remarkably close to producing net electricity

they are assembling the next machine (Polaris) now, first net electricity (for a millisecond) might happen later this year

Helion gets a lot of ill-informed skepticism in the science press from tokamak researchers, so don't be surprised if they actually build a commercial fusion plant before you hear about them
