Gun Thread: Third August Edition!

081824 calendar scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Shitballs! How in the ever-loving Hell did it get to be the third edition of August? There is one more August edition before we go into September! You see, the way the calendar works is to have August first, and then September after August is over. Got it? We good now on the calendar?

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

******

FUNdamentals
Have you been focusing on fundamentals, and what seems to be giving you the most trouble at the range? If your shooting isn't improving and you seem to be stuck in one place, have you tried analyzing what is causing you trouble? I think the biggest waste of time, money and effort is going to the range and doing the same thing that hasn't been achieving positive results over and over. Do the ineffective thing harder! Shooting can be a fun and social event, but when you are standing there firing at a target, why not have a plan in mind? Why not focus on the fundamentals? You're already focused during your non-firing time on the range babes, why not focus a little on your shooting as well? It can't hurt, right?

Anyhoo, are you shooting low left (or low and right)? Would you like to not do that and hit the center of the target? Well here are some things to think about and focus on.

Guns of the Horde

I think we all agree our pal Ed L has not only an impressive collection but also does an outstanding job in sharing his considerable knowledge here with us. Tonight's look at the Colt New Service Revolver is no exception!

Colt New Service Revolver
In 1898, Colt introduced its first large frame double action revolver with a swing-out cylinder, the Colt New Service. Chambered for no fewer than eleven different cartridges, it was a popular firearm, with hundreds of thousands produced over its forty-plus year production run. Colt copied the New Service's basic operating system into practically revolver it produced in the 20th century. This is a milestone revolver for Colt.
This particular Colt New Service revolver was manufactured in 1908. It is chambered in .44 Russian and has a 5 1/2 inch barrel. The sights are a U-shaped notch for the rear and a shark-blade fin for the front. A lanyard ring is standard on the butt. The finish is Colt's "fire blue" finish. A closer look at the trigger and screws shows that they are finished in a bright peacock blue which contrasts nicely with the blue-black of the rest of the revolver. The artificial lighting of the lightbox does not do justice to the contrast between the bright blue of the small parts and the "black chrome" look of the rest of the revolver.

081824 edl 1 scaled.jpg

081824 edl 2 scaled.jpg

.44 Russian is a vintage cartridge from the black powder era that was still in wide use at the turn of the 20th century. It was the ancestor of the modern .44 Special cartridge, which in turn gave birth to the .44 Magnum cartridge. The photo shows the progression with .44 Russian on the left, .44 Special in the center, and .44 Magnum on the right. Despite being the least powerful of the three (by 2024 standards), the .44 Russian round would definitely qualify the Colt New Service as "big iron" in the early 1900s.

081824 edl 3 scaled.jpg

081824 edl 4 scaled.jpg

Thanks to Stinky's Daddy, I acquired some .44 Russian rounds (245 grain lead round nose) to test fire this vintage Colt revolver. I fired one full cylinder each on single and double action. For single action, I used the old school target shooting method, one handed with my non shooting hand on my hip, with my strong side facing the target. I fired the double action rounds using a modern two-handed grip. The first picture shows the results of the single action rounds. The second shows the results of the double action rounds. All rounds were fired at 10 yards. Although the Colt New Service's size may appear intimidating, the recoil of the .44 Russian round is quite mild. Shooting this revolver one handed is definitely manageable.

Colt ended production of its New Service Revolver with the start of World War II. Colt would not produce another large frame revolver until the debut of the Colt Anaconda some fifty years later.

Thank you very much Ed L!

Cigar of the Week

081824 rhomboid Le Patissiere 2 scaled.jpg

This week our pal rhomboid scores again with this excellent review of the Crowned Heads Le Patissier

Quite a few cigars I review here will, I think, be more fully appreciated by those with more discriminating palates, and more time at the past time, than I bring to all this. This cigar - the Le Patissier, by Crowned Heads - is almost surely one. I tried two of the toro size (named Senadores by the company, 6 1/8 X 4. A slim toro with a slightly lighter than usual US Connecticut broadleaf wrapper, it has Nicaraguan and Costa Rican leaf inside. Construction is good, draw is perfect for my preferences, smoke is ample. Flavor notes is where others may pick up more than I did, but for me it was still a very nice smoke. I got tobacco sweetness and hints of dried fruits for the first half, becoming more a light earth and leather profile after that. An enjoyable medium stick. The Senador vitola is available online for just under $10.

Excellent as always, rhomboid! Thank you very much!

******

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Anyone have others to include? Perhaps a small local roller who makes a cigar you like? Send me your recommendation and a link to the site!

8 They have gun cameras now. You have to look to find them, but I know they are out there.

The idea? You have a record of the moment you pull your weapon up to the shooting of a (hopefully, since you're on camera) bad guy.

I remember seeing them a few years back, and they were pretty expensive. You've got to make the camera pretty shockproof. I think most of them also entailed a light or laser.

12 Oh, it works on the same principle as the kodak instamatic I had on a rocket as a kid. The shock (in the rocket's case, a cord attached to the rocket body when the nose cone separates) activates the lens.

I do wonder if fundamentals would make it less or more effective, as you reduce the recoil action.

The M66 has the 4 inch barrel, just perfect balance. Though I have long lusted after a snub Model 19, admittedly because it’s purty and just has a great classic look.

34 Evening everyone!!

Actually have a range report with a little mishap thrown in!!

Went with my nephew to the range on Wednesday (absolutely gorgeous day!!!).
Took my .308 to see if I "fixed" what was wrong with the scope and also took my handgun.
My nephew took his .308 and also 2 handguns, his Beretta and his Glock (which is his favorite).
Went to the rifle range first and put the target on the 50 yard line and bore sighted my scope. The reticle was WAY off so just adjusted until on the target. With my nephew spotting I proceeded to walk the rounds up until I was hitting center. Then put target at 100 yards and zeroed the scope there.
My nephew took a few shots with my rifle and then his.

37 My shooting was inexplicably inconsistent so i spent some time with a professional instructor. He said my fundamentals were pretty sound but the inconsistency was due to hand fatigue which comes on faster if you shoot revolvers. 47 Hi Nurse, great range report!

I too, have range reports. Friday was a good session. Got the highest score ever during our competition. While there was some consistency, not to the level I am looking for.
Today was a different story. During practice I was spot on. Groupings, actually hitting dead middle multiple times for a magazine...but then the consistency fell off...
Don't know if it's fatigue of shooting for over an hour, or more likely, it's more than the four fundamentals. I am beginning to appreciate that each of those fundamentals has numerous subsets, and if one is off, the consistency suffers.
So, that's my latest challenge....

Posted by: Grateful at August 18, 2024 07:21 PM (IQ6Gq)

48 I did get to the range this week. Not when I wanted, but I did get there.

I worked on stance and grip and trigger pull. Oof. I really do much better strong-hand only - I know my bladed stance is very stable, and my grip is good. My body just doesn't seem to like the idea of grabbing the gun with my other hand.

I really need to do more dry fire to get the muscle memory, I think.

50 Part 2 of 2

Next, on to the handguns. We did not set up a target, we were just shooting at some steel targets set up around 10-15 yards from the bench.
Shot a couple magazines through my Sig just to get the feel for it again. Then a couple through my nephews Beretta and then to his Glock.
To set this up I am wearing a baseball cap backwards (as I was shooting rifle earlier) and my eyes and ears.
His Glock is a little snappy and the casings tend to hit me in the head when I am shooting it. One of them actually hit me right between the eyes!! LOL
Then the shot after that had the perfect trajectory to go between the small gap between my eye protection and my face lodging right underneath my left eye!!!
Oh man that casing was HOT!!!!
But I kept my wits about me and put the gun down on the table the proceeded to yank my eye protection off!
Thankfully no permanent marks but proceeded to turn the cap back around and made sure the eye protection was up against my face!

61 I have also learned that at this point of development, slower is my friend. I used to get frustrated and just shoot faster. Obviously, without any satisfactory results. Now I am deliberately slower...until I start doing better, then I get excited and go faster again! Have to incorporate slower into the regime in my head before shooting.

Students will learn Rifle setup and components, parts of the rifle scope, types of scopes ( first and second focal plane), Proper Shooting Techniques, internal and external ballistics, Angular Measures, Minute of Angle (MOA) using a Ballistic Program, Correct Spotting Techniques, Cleaning and Maintenance, Ammunition, how to read winds and mirage, operating a rangefinders and using a ballistic rangefinder, proper setup of D.O.P.E Books and Range Cards"

Please note the price of this course is $350.

Now why aren't you going to the Texas MoMe again?

71 So, range report. Another weekend, another 1,000 yard match. Conditions were less than ideal, to say the least, but, I managed to finish ahead of some more experienced shooters with an 87. (not sure if I've mentioned it, but, we usually run 2 or 3 sighters then 10 shots for record.)

I regressed slightly from my previous score, but, since the conditions were much less than ideal, I'll take it. We had 15mph following and 10mph cross wind.

Funny side note: I knew this particular round was shooting high and right. I adjusted my ballistic program to compensate for how high the round was shooting, but, didn't adjust my scope for the 1MOA the rifle was shooting right, figuring the prevailing winds we normally encounter would take care of that. Boy, did they ever then a couple of MOA.

Growing up in South Carolina, part of my education was a trip to Charleston and Fort Sumter, a trip to Columbia to see the bronze stars on our Statehouse where Sherman fired from across the river. These trips were essential to knowing history, and now there is the state museum in the old textile warehouse. I wonder if the old State Penitentiary is still standing? We visited that institution too.

I am pleased to report good, repeatable results. Which shooting is all about.

Check to see if you can get homeowner's insurance. A number of the big insurance companies have pulled out of the FL coastal areas because they're afraid of the combination of high insured property values, hurricane hits, and flooding doing a number on their bottom lines. Also, check to see that your HOA has an adequate financial reserve to cover ongoing maintenance costs as condo towers age. The Champlain Towers collapse is cautionary tale about what happens when HOA's neglect ongoing maintenance.

154 Yeah, that would indeed be a 2.5. How does that handle with regards to .357 or do you go with .38?
Posted by: Notorious BFD at August 18, 2024 08:03 PM (mH6SG)

It's not the same gun, but I find that shooting .357 out my 2.5" Colt Python makes the gun almost impossible to control and makes follow up shots very hard. As a practical matter, 2.5" inches isn't enough barrel for .357 to develop the velocity it needs to outperform .38. That extra powder gets turned into muzzle flash and blast. I find that .38 or .38+P give me far better results because they don't create a flash bang grenade going off right in front of my face when fired.

You can look up 100 and 500 year floodplain maps on the FEMA website. In general, you'll need flood insurance if you're in the 100 year flood plain. Also, make sure the safe(s) you buy come with built in dehumidifiers. You won't need a hurricane or flood to have rust start attacking your collection. The climate alone can handle that.

Ruger Security 380 for her being 100lbs dripping wet. And pregnant..

Got her another half box of ammo for future trips, and myself a half box of 9mm.
A box being a case... should be good for a few more trips.

This is very common with most small light revolvers chambered in .357 magnum. I have the Ruger SP 101 in .357 with a 2 inch barrel and I have only shot .357 magnums once from it. For me it is literally uncontrollable with standard factory .357 magnum loads and it is a heavier revolver than most. I put it in the safe and have left it there for years. It is not pleasant to shoot.

If I want something to just shoot .38 special +P's in I will buy a different revolver, one that has 6 chambers in it.

Posted by: Weasel at August 18, 2024 08:15 PM (uGpeQ)

The small wood service grips that the old snub nose Pythons came with. Not a lot of surface for your hands to work with there. I've swapped them out for Pachmyr Presentation grips, which are definitely an improvement. I don't have a set of Hogue grips in hand. But the new King Cobras come w/ Hogue grips as standard, and they're pretty good at making .357 tolerable out of a small frame 3" revolver.

Posted by: Ed L at August 18, 2024 08:25 PM (yRXSd)

189 Seriously, though, I really do need to get to the range. I have a new upper on my 6.8, the old upper was an M4 and the barrel was standard so the bullet tips would catch when it was loading. I need to try it out now and verify that problem is fixed.

I also need to decide what to do with the old M4 upper, since I have a fully built lower for it. I could go with the tried and true 5.56 I guess, I already have the reload dies for it.

210 Oh, and I looked at a Beretta Tomcat .32 with the tilt-up barrel while I was at the range/gun-store. I actually like it. I think there are different variations running around out there, with safeties and mag releases in different spots. This one had the mag release about where the M9/1911/most other pistols do - but I've seen them in the ads with a button on back edge of the grip instead. (Which seems really weird to me.)

It's a DA/SA with a manual safety. It is definitely a deep concealment gun. I had the store guy nodding his head and smiling as he hadn't handled it before, either. It has evidently been there a while. I wonder if I could get them to come down in price if I show them the ones that are always on sale on the internet.

It's on my "I want" list now. (Along with the 4.25" Ronin in 9mm. Guess I have to stop at the corner store and buy lotto tickets.)

214 back in the 80' / 90s, when fed statistics were assumed to be reliable (lol), every year that I paid attention the statistics for fatalities by caliber featured .38 special and .25 acp ... and then, of course, hi-cap 9s appeared and distorted the numbers all to hell ...
anyway, that's why I never fire anything but .38 RNL or FMJ (I like the Fiocchi FMJ load for the speedstrip reload(s) that I carry; (no exposed lead to get rubbed off all over everything) from the j-frame ... used up all the deathco Super HP etc that would give some soreoss persecutor a cream fit; it's either good enough or it ain't, amirite?
from where the sun now stands I don't actually figure to get into (or survive) some big ol' death-and-destruction firefight and I am adjusting my viewpoint accordingly.
the j and the reload-or-two that I always carry will either do the thing, or not; at worst I can hope that someone somewhere will think "he died well".

and on that cheerful note, g'night everyone!

218 stripper clips are faster to reload it from than the speedloaders.
Posted by: GGE of the Moron Horde, NC Chapter at August 18, 2024 08:31 PM (6NgT4)

I've encountered that opinion a lot. The cylinder on my EAA Windicator doesn't come out far enough to make speedloaders really useful, either. I think I need to invest in some a lot more of those strips.

220 I am quite fond of the Model 66. I keep mine as my bedside gun and it goes into my overnight bag whenever I travel by car.
Be advised they are fragile if magnum ammo, especially 125 grain loads, are used excessively. The bottom of the barrel next to the cylinder is the weak point and they will crack there.
Use .38 wadcutters or standard velocity .38 loads for targets and practice and they will last forever.

232 Rifle update: I added some weight to help soak up recoil. Unfortunately, one of the weights also increased the length of pull. The change didn't seem to affect shooting, but, it certainly made it harder for me to get a proper cheek weld so the eye relief for the scope was correct. The weight has been removed from the buttstock. I will just add some more weight to the M-lok rail.

I picked up a police surplus Beretta Model 81 in .32 ACP last month at the Chantilly show. The Model 81 is readily concealable and holds 12 rounds of .32 ACP. The pistol looks similar to the Model 92/M9, but it doesn't have the decocker the Model 92/M9 does. That means that although the pistol is theoretically DA/SA, using DA for your first shot means lowering the hammer on a live round. Not recommended. It's heavier than some other choices, but the weight makes it very easy to shoot. Sharon and Iris will testify to that. Also, Beretta still has Model 81 magazines for sale on its webpage. If you can pick up one used, that's another option.

Posted by: Mister Scott (Formerly GWS) at August 18, 2024 09:03 PM (QNSds)

287 If I had a free AR-15 lower, and a free M-4 upper, I would probably go for .300 Blackout, as it seems to be really popular and ammo seems to be moderately priced.

And that's only because I think you need a different upper for a 12.7x42. Because everyone should have a 12.7x42 (.50 Beowulf) in their collection.

New anti-gun research claims deer hunting causes more gun violence

"They compared shootings during the first three weeks of deer season to a week prior to the season opener. The authors claim there was a 'substantial increase in shootings' during the start of deer season, which they said calls for additional gun control, of course."

Does the barrel have the "government cut" profile? That's the notch in front of the front sight post for the mounting bracket for an M203 grenade launcher. It would cost a lot more to do it, but you COULD plunk down $5-7k for an M203. You could then let home invaders "Say hello to my little friend." HE rounds are out of the question, but chalk rounds and simulators that make a really loud bang are available.

302 M1 Garand in .308 problem: The extractor groove on 7.62 NATO is a different shape than the 30-06 case. Some M1 clips do not like 7.62 ammo, while others do.

At the Class III store/range I go to they are saying that most suppressor or SBR tax stamp applications wait times are now in the less than a 30 day wait period. Most come back approved in 10 days or a couple of weeks.

A Class III dealer I know says that wait times have noticeably dropped in the last 12 months. He said that Class III firearm (i.e. full auto) wait times are now at 9-10 months instead of the 12-15 they were just a couple of years ago. You get the benefit of a faster turnaround IF you submit your paperwork electronically. If you insist on using paper, be prepared for your wait times to be 15 months or more. He says that BATFE reviewers are prioritizing electronic submissions for review because they can clear them faster.

322 Idaho Spudboy, thanks for the info on M1/.30eight. I believe my buddy has tried different clips. But not sure he's got any "diversity" in his clips. I have some WWII clips (Int'l Silver) I should bring next time to see if they load normally. What's weirdest is that CMP couldn't find a problem. I think my buddy should arrange to talk to a gunsmith there on the phone. Way back when I had very minor technical questions, my email was answered by the head honcho CMP mechanic at the time. Nice customer service.

Of course I told my crew mate that, of course, there would be problems, as the M1 was designed to fire 30-06, not that new-fangled stuff. Just kidding - I added that .276 Pedersen was the designed caliber for the M1, and it was switched to 30-06 due to the US having a crap-ton of 30-06 in inventory, the Army having a tiny budget, and chief of staff MacArthur saying nope, use the stuff we have.

I've just been enjoying the hell out of my new 22 ARC's, I'm boring, I just shoot holes in paper out in the mountains or desert so I don't need anything versatile. The 22 ARC with the 88gn tipped bullets is pretty amazing, only about half an MOA below my 6 Creedmoor's at 600 yards, really impressive for a pea shooter.

Ah, yes, the "bushless" or something. I finally went ahead and bought some inexpensive allen wrenches (2 sets, 1 English, other metric) and took the smallest one from each and cut off the short end a bit and put them in my tool bag and range bag. That way I don't have to ask around for paperclips.

(Cut the short end so it's slightly shorter than the diameter of the recoil spring guide. Then deburr it a little.)

369 357 Apropos of nothing, today I was in the zone at the range.
I hadn’t shot anything in a month, but my focus was great.
I’m really liking this PSA AR - 10.
I’m spending a lot of time at 300 yards and under and it feels quite natural. Next step is back up top. My tables seem to be dialed in and I want to feel the same at distance.
The 6.5 I brought back out today just performs. I’m almost there with the AR 10.

375 We've come to appreciate the sounds produced by other patrons at the range. Yes, they can startle and a big KA-BOOOM in an adjacent lane isn't always ideal, but all of the noise adds a stress factor that sharpens the focus.
Posted by: TRex

Time to ramp up the stress level. Try shooting in the lane next to a guy with a AR10 with a muzzle brake. Even with muffs and plugs, it is loud.

Ace's threads during the week I really don't feel I can add to.
On those I will type stuff and ask myself "am I qualified to comment on this?" and will delete it 90% of the time.

380 Weasel, darnit, that's some Lebanese brand I bought a while back, store it in a sealed container, did not keep the bag nor remember the details. However I will need to restock it soon. The Middle East grocery where I get it seems to have varying brands, so not sure I can get the same one. However I will let you know the brand of the next buy and how I like it.

I know it's the one without any additives (not chicory, that's Cafe du Monde - also great by itself or with cigars - some other thing they add) ... I recall the store had several brands, each brand has a version with/without the additive my dain bramaged memory cannot dredge up).

384 So.. What do y'all use for storage of ammo?
Posted by: Reforger at August 18, 2024 09:24 PM (xcIvR)

MTM ammo crates, and mini-ammo cans. They have two trays they sell that you can load with the normal or mini MTM cans and take 3 or 4 of them all at once.

The nice thing IMO about the minis is they come in different colors. So you can visually organize your ammo (or some of it - those with LOTS of calibers will find color-sorting inadequate, by itself). I do have extra cans as I moved from trying to keep enough in the minis to keeping it in the crates, and just loading up the minis if I'm going to the range.

(I also color-sort my ammo into the plastic ammo boxes that hold 50 or 100 rounds. So I can grab it easily from my range bag and take it to the bench.)

I might overthink things a bit.

385 For those with 1911s that need a paperclip to field strip it, there is another option. Dawson precision makes a guide rod that has a spring loaded tab that serves the same purpose as the paperclip.

387 Speaking of food, the cherry pie tastes great, everybody liked it overall, but I'm still far from satisfied with the crust (too chewy, not flakey enough). Too much gluten development, I think, but I'll have to research this.

And speaking further of food, the grill's ready for the lemon-marinated chicken strips that will go into the pasta with the homemade pesto, so better dash.

You need to have a digital copy of your fingerprints that have to get attached to all forms you submit to the BATFE e-forms website. Or, you'll have to provide it to your seller of your suppressor of choice. The sheriff won't do it for you (unless you have connections). You'll need a suppressor to get the most out of .300 Blackout.

Braces will work OK. But going the SBR route also opens up a lot more options for you (stocks, vertical foregrips, etc.). And these options will often be a better fit for your weapon. .300 Blackout will allow you to reduce your barrel length the 10.5" or even less. Adding a suppressor will push overall barrel length out to the 13"-15" mark, but you'll have something that's REALLY quiet when fired, even indoors. Your call on how you want to play it.
