For me, Luther Vandross sang the definitive version of 'Superstar'. One of the reasons is that I heard his version first, and thought he was the original singer.

Over-simplifying, Israel is in a (domestic) political situation that is permissive for what every serious person knows must be done - devastate Hezb and reduce them to a small fraction of their current offensive capability. This threat will only grow, absent regime change in Tehran, as it has for decades.

Starliner is designed for dry land landings. Parachutes and airbags. It has been done twice before without problems. In 2019 and 2022, both uncrewed. Land landings are preferred by NASA because the crew and returning science materials can be gotten to Houston faster than with a water landing in the Atlantic or Pacific. I don't know exactly why Gulf of Mexico splashdowns have never been done, but I expect it is for crew and people on the ground safety reasons.

For some reason, Boeing removed the autonomous software from this manned version. It was on the last unmanned test mission, but they removed those routines from this manned one. It's insane.
So, I guess they've managed to get those routines uploaded into the thing's computer system now.

I have now drilled the plastic guts out of the weird-ass banjo bolt, and cranked a 1/2" N.C. nut onto the stub where the solenoid was screwed on. Will finish the job by welding the hole in the end closed, and welding the nut in place securely, so the valve will become a plain old banjo bolt, and pass all the oil the pump can put out.

We've got a pretty good amount of naval power in the region. 2 carrier groups, amphib group in eastern Med, other units.
But apart from helping against a large Iranian attack (like last time), which has been publicly signaled, I am baffled at what our actions might be. Having no president, and pathetically unfit underlings with an insanely delusional policy (re Iran), it's impossible to figure. Which might have deterrent value of its own, of course (madman theory).

The Pacific gives a lot of room to miss short and long is why. If your vehicle is designed for water landings you DO NOT want to land on land. Another factor is risk to people on the surface under the entry track. I can't recall the exact number, but by law or a FedGov Regulation all US spacecraft operators are required to show by analysis and test that a failure or end-of-life entry will have a no less than a 1-in-(I forget) risk of killing someone. That's easier for a Pacific entry track and splashdown because of the extremely low population density out there. It's also why you don't see NASA manned spacecraft entering overhead if you live in a big city.

All I recall is Sen. Pete Domenici and his NM colleague whose name I forget (Harrison Schmitt?) droning on down on the floor one night about the whole thing - mostly a light-hearted and humorous tone to it all - and talking about how it was New Mexico, USA.

There is a surprisingly large amount of confusion about New Mexico being a part of the USA. Somewhere around here I have a book titled "One of Our 50 is Missing" filled with anecdotes of Americans thinking they need a passport to go to New Mexico, post office clerks insisting letters to NM need extra postage, etc.
I bought the book in 1989, so it's been at least that long. Considering the sad state of public education, sure it will only get worse.

NASA fudged on ground personnel risk on Shuttle entries until the Columbia accident. Columbia's entry ground track that day was over the DFW Metroplex. In 2021 on-site at Johnson Space Center I watched a Shuttle, Columbia I think, entering over Houston at night - quite a sight. After the Columbia accident NASA set-up Shuttle entry tracks to go by the book on ground personnel fatality risk.

One of the most disappointing people in the history of rock for me. The first solo album was ok, then a complete downward spiral of becoming the middle of the road. Especially weird considering he came to Nirvana from an extreme outsider band and was around Cobain, who although nuttier than a fruitcake absolutely HATED being popular. The last decade or so he's been massaging his image to inherit the Grand Old Man of Rock for public consumption once all the 60s guys finally go because he's one of the few functional survivors of his generation. He may get there but he will be the Prince Charles of Rock.

But it doesn't burn up in re-entry, so use has to be very very limited. If you end up having to use a bunch of it, you usually have to plan for a controlled deorbit to force a landing in the ocean. And that is it's own problem due to having to carry extra fuel and control surfaces.
