Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Saturday Overnight Open Thread (8/24/24)Ed and Carolyn met while on a singles cruise and Ed fell head over heels for her. When they discovered they lived in the same city only a few miles apart Ed was ecstatic. He immediately started asking her out when they got home. Within a couple of weeks, Ed had taken Carolyn to dance clubs, restaurants, concerts, movies, and museums. Ed became convinced that Carolyn was indeed his soul mate…and true love. Every date seemed better than the last. On the one-month anniversary of their first dinner on the cruise ship, Ed took Carolyn to a fine restaurant. While having cocktails and waiting for their salad, Ed said, “I guess you can tell I’m very much in love with you. I’d like a little serious talk before our relationship continues to the next stage. So, before I get a box out of my jacket and ask you a life changing question, it’s only fair to warn you, I’m a total golf nut. I play golf, I read about golf, I watch golf on TV. In short, I eat, sleep, and breathe golf. If that’s going to be a problem for us, you’d better say so now!” Carolyn took a deep breath and responded, “Ed that certainly won’t be a problem. I love you as you are and I love golf too; but, since we’re being totally honest with each other, you need to know that for the last five years I’ve…I’ve been a hooker.” “That’s alright.” Ed said, “I bet it’s because you’re not keeping your wrists straight when you hit the ball.” Following that joke I ran across the following story and share the headline with you. MAYBE BABY! It turns out you might need to CHANGE condoms during sex – or risk a unexpected surprise Plus, have you ever heard of 'double bagging' and wondered if it’s a good idea? A doctor sets the record straight CONDOMS should be switched up during long romps, say experts. A UK study, where 500 couples from around the world timed themselves having sex, found rumpy-pumpy takes around five minutes. However, times ranging from 0.55 seconds to a whopping 44.1 minutes were recorded. Prolonged friction for a longer-than-average sexual encounter can damage those ultra-thin condoms, increasing the risk of breakage. Sexual health experts suggest switching out your 'rubber' after about 30 minutes of action. And if things are getting particularly steamy and vigorous, you might want to swap even more often. Five Red Flags to Look for in Any Restaurant If you see any of these warning signs, you should spend your money elsewhere. Eating at a restaurant is supposed to be all about pleasure: The joy of being able to relax and enjoy a meal you didn’t have to sweat over, the luxury of being served by professionals, the deliciousness of a well-cooked dinner. That's why a bad restaurant experience hits you with multiple regrets: You didn’t enjoy your meal, you wasted your time, and you wasted your money—these days, probably a lot of money, because restaurants have become increasingly expensive. That makes knowing the signs of a bad restaurant a crucial life skill. The following is passable for Saturday ONT filler material. The Most Unbelievable True Stories.

Later, I'm gonna put on "Keep On Rollin" by REO Speedwagon, and then maybe some Foreigner. "Hot Blooded" is my favorite. It is well that the radio station plays it at least 5 to 10 times daily, that I know of. Very fortunate. Posted by: Common Tater at August 24, 2024 09:54 PM (6b60r) 16

We were having difficulty with the high temperature soak back after long runs. We decided it would be a good thing to strengthen the Teflon valve seat. In order to do that, we put fiberglass into the Teflon valve seat, and it really stayed together, except when the engine heat soaked back; the Teflon grew and grew and grew, and the oxidizer didn’t get through the oxidizer side, if it got too hot. We flew two successful missions around the moon with that PFRT engine. Boeing made that particular device. We held our breath all the way
because it was used as the brake engine and an apogee engine both; we were really worried about the valve seats getting too big. In the middle of the chamber of the basic R-4D engine as it evolved into the engine that flew on all the missions, there was a little tube sticking down, and that was a magic thing called the pre-igniter. It was both part of our problem, and a savior of part of our problems. I found this interesting - exactly the problem the Starliner is having with the reaction control system. Or part of it anyways. They had this problem in 1965, too. I cribbed it from a NASA paper on Marquardt, the original contractor for the RCS. Posted by: Common Tater at August 24, 2024 10:14 PM (6b60r) 73

On the radio version of Dragnet, Joe Friday still lives with his Mom, played by Peggy Weber. "You need your rest, Joseph, or you're going to get sick!"
"Okay, Ma." You can see the character development in the writing. He pulls an all-nighter in one episode with an undercover gal, they are both decoys -and they park in the lovers lane, where there has been a string of attacks by a maniac. "Do you like to dance, Joe?" etc. Their romantic interlude is interrupted by the maniac attack, thwarted by a strong punch by Joe's new side piece, but clearly there is room for a wonderful relationship here. Israeli airspace closed, 40+ strikes reported by IAF so far in south Lebanon, ground forces postured for offensive action. Hezb officials made unusual specific/very aggressive threats about attacking central Israel.
Both sides have faced a dilemma for some time, but hoping Bibi & Co. agree that a quasi-decisive action is required, and thanks to 10/7 and all that's followed, this might be the "window" to take it. Israeli public in its realistic mode due to these events. Hezb threat simply grows inexorably over time, and there is *no diplomatic or political solution* that is plausible. Significant part of northern Israel now uninhabitable, will remain so until Hezb threat is reduced dramatically. Untenable situation for Israel. We'll see. 72 ....We flew two successful missions around the moon with that PFRT engine. Boeing made that particular device. We held our breath all the way because it was used as the brake engine and an apogee engine both; we were really worried about the valve seats getting too big. In the middle of the chamber of the basic R-4D engine as it evolved into the engine that flew on all the missions, there was a little tube sticking down, and that was a magic thing called the pre-igniter. It was both part of our problem, and a savior of part of our problems.

Shadow of Ezra
@ShadowofEzra Massachusetts health officials are advising residents to stay indoors and have implemented a 6 p.m. curfew on outdoor activities until at least October after detecting a human case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) transmitted by mosquitoes. Eastern equine encephalitis virus can cause a febrile illness or neurologic disease, including meningitis or encephalitis. There are no vaccines to prevent or medicines to treat eastern equine encephalitis. The timing is interesting, given that Dr. Anthony Fauci was recently hospitalized with West Nile Virus, which was also contracted from a mosquito. Israeli operations (hits) on Hezb for last several months have been battlefield-shaping/pre-emptive in many respects. Emphasis on sector commanders and rocket unit commanders. First helps in case of ground offensive, 2nd helps for obvious reasons.
Over-simplifying, Israel is in a (domestic) political situation that is permissive for what every serious person knows must be done - devastate Hezb and reduce them to a small fraction of their current offensive capability. This threat will only grow, absent regime change in Tehran, as it has for decades. Question is will this "window" be used, or a likely costlier reckoning be put off. Yes the int'l political situation is poor, mostly because of US derangement and weakness. But waiting until January '25 and relying on a good result in November has its own risks and costs. So today I started the '99 Suburban I bought last year in Utah, and drove it onto the hoist, to change the power steering pump outlet valve. A bitch of a job. Got the hard line uncouple from the valve elbow OK, but the valve itself is held into the steering pump port by weird-ass banjo fitting with a 1 3/16" hex on it, and a very shallow one at that. And needless to say, there is very little room to work. So, final solution: hammer a scrap 3/8" drive socket into the square drive recess of a 3/4" drive 1 3/16 socket. It was a tight drive fit. Place "modified" socket on 3/8 ratchet handle, and place on the valve hex, with handle horizontal, above frame rail. Place end of short hunk of 2X4 on end of ratchet handle, swat with 2-pound hammer. Rinse and repeat. It came free! Back out with ratchet.
I have now drilled the plastic guts out of the weird-ass banjo bolt, and cranked a 1/2" N.C. nut onto the stub where the solenoid was screwed on. Will finish the job by welding the hole in the end closed, and welding the nut in place securely, so the valve will become a plain old banjo bolt, and pass all the oil the pump can put out. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at August 24, 2024 11:38 PM (w6EFb) The Pacific gives a lot of room to miss short and long is why. If your vehicle is designed for water landings you DO NOT want to land on land. Another factor is risk to people on the surface under the entry track. I can't recall the exact number, but by law or a FedGov Regulation all US spacecraft operators are required to show by analysis and test that a failure or end-of-life entry will have a no less than a 1-in-(I forget) risk of killing someone. That's easier for a Pacific entry track and splashdown because of the extremely low population density out there. It's also why you don't see NASA manned spacecraft entering overhead if you live in a big city. Posted by: Gref at August 24, 2024 11:55 PM (aBgBM) 325

Well I think it dates back to the 80s. Some US guvamint agency or something did something (printed a form, phrasing on a form, or something like that) that treated New Mexico as a foreign country, i.e. Mexico.
All I recall is Sen. Pete Domenici and his NM colleague whose name I forget (Harrison Schmitt?) droning on down on the floor one night about the whole thing - mostly a light-hearted and humorous tone to it all - and talking about how it was New Mexico, USA. I was just reading up on the Boca Chica, "Starbase" launch site, and noticed something. One of the most disappointing people in the history of rock for me. The first solo album was ok, then a complete downward spiral of becoming the middle of the road. Especially weird considering he came to Nirvana from an extreme outsider band and was around Cobain, who although nuttier than a fruitcake absolutely HATED being popular. The last decade or so he's been massaging his image to inherit the Grand Old Man of Rock for public consumption once all the 60s guys finally go because he's one of the few functional survivors of his generation. He may get there but he will be the Prince Charles of Rock. Posted by: azjaeger at August 25, 2024 12:32 AM (3/XaG) 370

Over 100 Israeli aircraft reportedly participated in strikes (well, first wave - more strikes happening now). Some claims that up to 6K missiles were slated to be launched at Israel. Significant number, presumably the longest range and most precise ones, were pre-emptively taken out. Other than one wrecked chicken coop in the north, I have not seen any reports of damage or casualties in Israel.
Israeli FM made wimpy noises about not seeking a wider war, Bibi's post-cabinet meeting statement was platitudes - except the bit about doing whatever needed to "safely return the northern residents to their homes". That could imply more than what we see happening - if those residents want to spend most of their time above ground. So can is kicked down the road. For a week, for a few months. Unless Israel can reduce the missile threat sufficiently short of full-scale war on Hezb, which I don't see. Posted by: rhomboid at August 25, 2024 01:39 AM (GcNJ2) 424

Biden's Dog, absolutely, and finally steps are being taken to end dependence for many basic but critical items. But the dependence also extends to other things for which solutions are not quick or easy. Regardless, while keeping up appearances, Israel's only rational course is to pursue a situation where an incompetent or hostile US becomes a serious problem (past few years have been a useful example). Many Americans have been caught off guard by the degradation of the country and its institutions, for Israel there's no excuse now. Have to war game it as if the US doesn't exist.

Well I suppose it's possible there were hits in Israel that have gone unreported, but doubtful. I didn’t know the DNC platform had a bill called the citizenship act of 2024 where they are going to change the immigration status of every single illegal in America to legal immigrants, and they specifically say those legal immigrants can vote. And there’s a provision that anybody deported under Donald Trump can come back and be eligible, but not people deported under Barack Obama.

CNN cut away from RFK Jr's speech as he was explaining how the DNC rigged the primary, replaced their candidate with one who didn't receive a single vote, and how the media covered up for it and censored him.

Heh. Just reading more on the Starliner debacle. Boeing was supposed to do 6 manned missions to the ISS before it was decommissioned and deorbited in 2030. It will not make that. Any bets on how many Starliners will fly up there before D-day? Note the ISS will be "retired" in 2030. How long before it is de-orbited and junked to Point Nemo is another question. Reading some more. The established, "deep state" you might call them, space contractors were all down on Elon and that upstart SpaceX outfit. They were nothing but wannabes, reckless space cowboys, and they were gonna get people killed. Upstart peasants thinking they could compete with the Big Boys. Well, how you do like me now, Space Daddy could say? He's the one that's gonna have to rescue two astronauts from the Boeing debacle.
