So what if he took acid? I took more acid than he did. So what if he had a gun? I had more guns than him then, too.

The whole thing always seemed overwrought to me. Then and now.

Listen. Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.

You can’t expect to wield supreme executive power just ’cause some watery tart threw a sword at you!

I mean, if I went around saying I was an emperor just because some moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me, they’d put me away!

Ah, now we see the violence inherent in the system!

Almost no mess; a little fluid trapped in the filter, which I changed. No metal filings, and no sludge in the pan. Job went very smoothly. Put a gallon of ATF back into it, and it is nearly full. Will check dipstick once it is hot after a run.

And I painted some exposed metal body structure on the '47 Flxible, and then replaced the hunk of rotten plywood floorboard in the right rear corner of the engine room with a new piece. Looks spiffy, too.

The real reason the "protestors" were kept far away from the RNC was because Democrats just shot the president in the head and the SS said fuckno to any and all potential threats of violence at the convention.

Otherwise, the "protesters" would've been let loose on the RNC.

111 Why don't domestic manufacturers put drain plugs in a tranny pan? My 87 Toyota 2.4 engine has one. I installed one in my 07 Caravan because I intend to keep it around. It's so much easier to deal with the old fluid.
Posted by: Pan's People at August 16, 2024 10:41 PM (CV8a5)

You know, I wrestled (mentally) with that on this job. Bottom line: pan has to come off to change the filter. You can suck out nearly all the fluid with a siphon hose. I used 1/4" polyflow tubing, which took hours, but left only about a half-inch in the pan. I had all kinds of time to do it, so not in a hurry.

I may never have the pan off it again during my tenure as owner. It would take at least an hour of my time to find a suitable drain plug, and threaded receptacle for it, and weld it into the pan, and no guarantee that the weld would be 100% oil-tight. So I did not attempt to do that.

I do not believe a pro-life male at UNC could grab a sign back that was stolen by a pro-abortion female, and NOT face an assault and battery charge.

Pug, you could have her try Ivermectin if it is otherwise not contraindicated.

Very well tolerated, a couple billion doses around the world for 40 years attests to that. It also shows efficacy against a shitload of parasites, including things like Malaria, falciparum. The shit even kills mosquitos that bite you? How fucking cool is that?Ticks don’t like it either. Bedbugs, lice, mites etc.

It might help with Lyme, and if it doesn’t, well - it can’t hurt anything. Has been described as safe and as important with Aspirin and Pennicillin. I’m not a Doctor. All the Usual Standard Disclaimers Apply. No User Serviceable Parts Inside.

I actually fat-fingered that. Andesite is very quartz-deficient compared to granite. Its plutonic, and coarser-crystalline equivalent is diorite, which is intermediate in composition between granite (normally light in color) and gabbro, which is very dark.

Big, chunky inclusions could mean it is a porphyry, or it contains xenoliths.

Porphyry: a rock texture in which large crystals of one particular mineral are scattered through a "groundmass" of much more finely crystalline rock. Sometimes the crystals are nearly perfect in form, showing prism faces, other times, they are blobs, having been partially redissolved by the magma.

Xenolith: a fragment of rock caught up in an intrusion or lava flow, which was derived from a body of pre-existing rock through which it passed.

244 Not me, no. Petrie (who probably found many of them) described them in terms of manufacturing by lathe, I think. This was maybe in the 1870s before machining techniques were perfected.

If you haven’t seen them, they are really cool, because they are hard stone, and can only be worked with even harder materials than 7 or 8 on the Mohs. That leaves Carborundum or Diamond, I think. It’s been a while. The radius, thin material, the inside curves are very difficult.

Hah! Did not mess with it today. But it occurred to me that there is more than one way to skin a cat. The OEM encoder provided with the speedometer is calibrated for 1000 revs per mile. But I am pretty sure there are at least two, maybe, four, pulses per revolution. In any case, the current inductive sensor is making more pulses than required. Changing the toothed wheel inside the transmission would be a massive job, and I doubt an alternate could be found. But I could fasten a disc to the U-joint, and place the correct number of steel pole on it to get the right pulse rate per mile. Or cement steel slugs to the rim of a front brake drum.

265 If you haven’t seen them, they are really cool, because they are hard stone, and can only be worked with even harder materials than 7 or 8 on the Mohs. That leaves Carborundum or Diamond, I think. It’s been a while. The radius, thin material, the inside curves are very difficult.
Posted by: Common Tater at August 17, 2024 12:26 AM (IetnX)

The Mohs scale really only works for mineral crystals. The "hardness" of rocks is more a function of the adhesion between crystals. Diorite contains plagioclase feldspar, 6.0 to 6.5 Mohs, pyroxene, 5 to 7, and amphibole, 5 to 6. Quartz sandstone would readily abrade it. And I don't see a lathe as being out of the question at all. Potter's wheels have been around a long time, and they a lathe of a sort.

You can always abrade a rock with another piece of the same rock. The "work" and the "tool" both abrade, but the work gets done.

I might add, that the sender for the Engler speedometer seems to be a Hall Effect switch, and the output toggles between supply voltage (12 volts) and ground for each trigger event. But the Engler speedometer happily reads the single sine cycle from the inductive pickup just fine. It must have a pretty robust pulse-shaping network on its input.

You know, maybe I should just try putting a diode in the line, and see what happens...

Well, making an alternate code wheel with the right number of trigger poles on it would be not too hard, either. I think so. Definitely worth trying, I would probably add an IC voltage regulator to drop the 12 volt supply down to 5 or 6 volts to run the device. And a diode and network on the input so the flip-flop "sees" just one negative-going pulse per event.

I just saw this frequency divider (in general, divide and input f by some n, f/n output). I though just count zero crossings, and flip every other one for a halver.

And that's what these D-flop things do. Imagine an incoming sine wave. Start counting zero crossing. One, go high, two, stay put, three, flip, four stay put, five flip, etc.

It's a two bit counter, flip with the high bit flips. 00, 01, one state, 10, 11, then flip.

Hazelnut.

I make a five-mug pitcher (the 12 whatever mark on the coffee pot). The pitcher's glass, a nice one, so it's easy to clean and no staining issues. I use a saran wrap 'lid' held down by a rubber band off of some vegetable from sometime when. It's been chilling since early Friday. Since there's ice cubes and I add more milk, I'll get about 3, maybe a touch into the 4th, day of coffee. I usually make a pot every 3 days or so. So it's always in the fridge. Sometimes on those really warm and disgustingly muggy days, it's the pause that refreshes (apologies to nothing).

I saw that earlier. They make it sound as if it's some new discovery. This has been known for a long time, the earth's rotation is slowing down due to tidal interaction with the Moon.

The long term mean rotation. Over the short term, there are all sorts of interesting components. It speed up a bit, slows down a bit with all sorts of seasonal components. Then there are "stochastic", unpredictable terms due to earthquakes and such.

That's just Milankovitch cycles at work. These are cycles in the Erf's orbital eccentricity, axial tilt, and precession of the equinoxes.

On this leg of the cycle, the earth's orbit is getting less eccentric, more circular, and so the tropical year is getting shorter. That will flip back around and start getting longer again on tens to hundred thousand year time scales.

The axial tilt is also on a decreasing leg. That too, will reverse on this long term time scale.

Not trying to make fun or anything but damn, dude! I never took a spacey class, except that philosophy one -- until I started reading your posts. Some I understand. Unlike that last one. I'm not sure I like decreasing legs, either.

Milankovitch cycles are one of the biggest drivers of climate. One of the cycles there is how perihelion cycles around the seasons.

Right near, perihelion occurs in early January, aphelion in July. Meaning the sun is farthest in Northern summer and closest in Northern winter.

That is the main driver of the "Green Sahara" cycle. When perihelion occurs in North Summer, the Sahara gets wet and green again.

at the Convention, the muckety-mucks of the Dem Party will have their sharpened knives out and they will exert their will -- once again, and their sheeple will fall in line for the THIRD time. Do that selected thing until you get it right. They want to win and they know the Spit or Swallow Ticket won't win. I think her internals are horrid, and those tend to be brutally accurate; every other poll is just spin. One more reason for actually the both of them to stay away from an open-ended question and answer session from anyone.

I guess that I shall dream of price gouging, it's okay when the government does it, right??

I think that Stormy Daniels' PR team will make a serious offer to AOP for the patent for the bistable multivibrator, set her up on QVC some night and she could at least pay her legal bills.

439 Serious question, publius: Did you have any formal instruction/training in this area, like classes and such, or is this all from reading on your own, teaching yourself along the way?

For me, my instruction in History is now outpaced by my own curiosity in both reading and viewing/watching material, and it was always on the high side. I remember back just after high school. I was staying in Chattanooga for the summer and I used to go to the mall. The B. Dalton's had a sign saying they would have Gulag Archipelago in soon! I kept going back until I got the paperback book. No other reason than I wanted it, and that was before college. At least I could pick a decent book at 18. Other choices? Not so much.

So like I said, I'm just curious.
