The Quote of The Day.

Quote I

The ONT is what it is. Misanthropic Humanitarian

*****

Just some random thoughts about things.............

Somewhere along the line this guy coached young people. Now he just hangs with other millionaires. The NFL continues to demonstrate they are the best and brightest.

Saints Head Coach Dennis Allen, Who Makes Millions Of Dollars Per Year, Has No Idea What A Metaphor Is

***

How many of you remember the Avon Lady? Those days are behind us.

Legendary beauty products seller Avon files for bankruptcy
Avon filed for bankruptcy to address its debts and legal liabilities from talc-based product lawsuits

***

Who the fuck are you? Is OK in The Who lyrics. Not so much when it comes to asking about Allah. Glad we kicked their limey asses twice.

A 61-year-old man in Sutton, England who chanted “who the f*** is Allah” at a right-wing demonstration was sentenced to 18 months in prison.

David Spring pled guilty to “violent disorder” after police body camera footage reportedly showed he “[made] threatening and hostile gestures towards police,” according to Your Local Guardian.

Spring told officers when he was arrested on August 8 that he did not travel to London to riot. “I went to complain about people put up in hotels,” he reportedly stated.

Something that made me laugh. Twice. Even The Fabulous snickered. Hope you enjoy.

43 The Jerusalem Post is reporting something so horrific that one hopes it isn't true.

Allegedly to distance itself from the recent assassinations of Hamas' Ismail Haniyeh and Hezbollah's Fuad Shukr:

"Allegedly, the American delegation presented a list with the names of ten Mossad agents within Iran whom the Americans believed were involved in the assassination, directly or indirectly."

A source is claiming that this is Iranian disinformation - if it's not, it is yet another new low for the Biden/Harris Administration.

67 I've got to put this out there while I remember it. I was just listening to the Federalist's You're Wrong podcast. It reminded me why I call one of the hosts "Mollie the Great".

She nailed it. That instead of taking questions from the Commie presstitutes, all conservatives should start each interview by throwing their past lies in their teeth, and demanding THEY explain their lying records.

That is exactly what we need. And the spirit should be that of a bulldog: don't let go until the enemy is strangled. (I've never forgotten that chapter of White Fang.) She said Vance did it partly on this past round of Sunday shows, but it should go further.

Now to the content.

Posted by: Eeyore at August 14, 2024 10:15 PM (1bNHn)

68 The local news in St. Louis had an interesting story tonight about Cori Bush and her long record of anti-Semitism.

Though Bush got some of the attention herself, given her screaming about how she was going to take AIPAC down, most of the focus was on her unsavory (well, more unsavory) associates, including a pro-Palestinian activist who said Bush's opponent had let himself be enslaved by Jews, and who tweeted "I tried to befriend a Jew once. Worst idea ever."

They also highlighted the president of the STL board of aldermen, who thinks that the Jewish lobby was behind the closing of a local paper.

Would've been nice if the average voter had heard anything--at all--about this before the election.

"Allegedly, the American delegation presented a list with the names of ten Mossad agents within Iran whom the Americans believed were involved in the assassination, directly or indirectly."

I saw this story, and while I think this administration has the mendacity to do this, I also think it’s idiotic to imagine that the Israelis would ever let the US have access to this level of info. The CIA isn’t good enough to get this out of Mossad on their own.

But what I like to imagine is that the story IS true, and that the first name on the list is Eli Copter.

I'm no expert and I haven't played the game in years, but:

The Borderlands universe is a hugely commercial / oppressively corporate world where every tiny thing is expensive but pretty much cheap throwaway crap, and there are ads and commercial control of almost all elements of society. IIRC the corporations have armies.

People are wondering if the Borderlands movie was made the way it was intentionally as a huge and very clever self-referencing product. Which would not be a terrible idea for the studio to start pushing.

"We meant for it to be this way!"

230 Colin Kaepernick has a door open to return to the NFL in what would be a grand reunion with his former coach, Jim Harbaugh.
“If that was ever the path he was to take, I think that would be tremendous,” Harbaugh told USA TODAY. “He’d be a tremendous coach, if that’s the path he chose.”
During an interview Harbaugh said shortly after he returned to the NFL in January, he talked to Kaepernick about joining the Chargers in a non-playing capacity. Yet in the months since, there’s been no movement on the possibility.
“Yeah, we talked a little bit about it,” Harbaugh said. “He’s considering it."
Harbaugh indicated that Kaepernick’s inglorious exit from the NFL – for which the league should be ashamed of – wouldn’t be an issue for him if the quarterback opted to return in a coaching capacity. The Chargers coach is keenly aware of Kaepernick's stature as a civil rights activist and the respect earned with a large swath of society.
“I see him as a hero,” Harbaugh said. “Heroes get no days off. And he’s being a hero right now and he’s not getting any days off. It’s not for me to choose what path he takes. That’s his decision.”

257 Solution to Canada Geese crapping all over your stomping grounds?

A border collie!

Had a buddy with several ponds on his property. When the geese start flying into the yard, his border collie lies flat on the floor at the glass storm door.

When he opens the door, the dog is off like a shot.

When he comes back, he is swelled with pride for herding the "bad sheep" off of the property!

4) Liechtenstein. Because they already hold that position anyway. From what I gather, his serene highness Prince Hans -Adam II, Fürst von und zu Liechtenstein, is an amiable sort of monarch, with a very hands-off approach to wielding his powers.

A telling point - during the most recent time that Liechtenstein sent troops off to battle, in 1866, a company of 80 men were dispatched to act in support of Austria. They returned home unscathed with 81 men. The 81st guy was someone they encountered and befriended, and he came back to Liechtenstein with them. It kinda says something when a foreign force invades your territory and you find them so likable that you pull up stakes and march along with them. Their national anthem Oben am jungen Rhein, is pretty awesome too.

This reminds of a funny story. One thing they gave me was some kind of cologne, and why you give that to a 10 year old kid was a mystery. Anyway, it was a brown glass bottle shaped like a horse, and there was a shiny gold cowboy that sat on top of the horse. There was a hole in the bottom of the cowboy's butt that fit over the cap of the horse bottle. One 4th of July me and my brother were looking for things to blow up with firecrackers. I looked at the horse and thought hmm, I'm gonna blow up that cowboy. I popped off the cowboy and inside the hole was yet another hole that was smaller and deeper that fit a firecracker perfectly. Oh this is perfect. We stuck a firecracker in and lit it. Well it was pretty tough plastic, so it didn't grenade, but it shot about 10 feet up. Sooo, the rest of the afternoon was spent launching our cowboy rocket. lol

Rotten Tomatoes has now become an excellent screening tool for new movies.

Any movie with a high Tomatometer (critics score), and a low audience score is guaranteed to be terrible movie to any Moron.

The critics love woke shit, just for being woke.

For example, Star Wars: The Acolyte is 78% on the critics score and 18% on the audience score.

A movie with a low critic score and a high audience score is very likely to be a Moron romp flick.

346 BTW, Mike Hammer, I have a question you might be able to answer. Problem: I have a brand new, 40 year old Engler Instruments electric speedometer, complete with sending unit. Sending unit is a rotary device, 3 terminals, and it is intended to screw onto the speedometer pinion on a transmission, and engage the pinion shaft. Sends 1000 pulses per mile, apparently. Here's the hitch: the vehicle I want to use it on does not have a speedometer pinion on its output shaft. There is a toothed "tone wheel" and a 2-terminal magnetic pickup. I tried connecting the two wires from that pickup to the speedometer head, in various ways, and one position seemed to make the needle quiver a bit at zero. Best I could do. Any ideas? Would the three-wire sender be sending 3-phase AC?

AOP, I think the 3-wire sensor works this way. Two wires are DC power and ground (what voltage, 12V, or maybe 5V for the newer systems driven off the computer), and the third wire is the return that sends a signal based on speed.

What that signal is, I don't know. Is it pulses. Maybe for the older units.

369 There was a time, only a lifetime ago, when intimate knowledge of contract bridge was a prerequisite for membership in The Establishment, as we might say. Late Uncle The Colonel, a fast riser in the 60's, was taught it at West Point, and it was huge among naval officers as well. Bridge was one of those acceptable social engagement points for diplomatic couples in a power marriage -- unlike, say, poker. Heinlein talks about it, and he, of course, knew of such things. It was largely supplanted by golf.

In its day it was unsurpassed for its social acceptability. Being a very good bridge player was a major advantage. As such, it was largely seen by a more hip generation as a mechanism for sucking up -- not the only pastime to go out of vogue that way.

I have the installation instructions, dated 8/80. I apparently have the kit #58-020080-000, consisting of the programmable (by DIP switches) instrument head with odometer, and the sending unit, on about 25 feet of 3-wire flat cable. A 5-pin plug fits a socket on the back of the head unit, and has a gray wire to +12v power, a wht/blk wire to ground, and red, black, and green wires to sender.

I have an idea: connect the sending unit to the instrument head, and spin it with a portable drill, while metering the output. If red and black are power to the sender, and green the output, it should be possible to determine that, too.

I saw those earlier today, while searching for Engler. Thing is, there is no rotary source to drive one. The transmission, six speed Spicer, has (presumably) a toothed wheel on its output shaft. There is a magnetic pickup screwed into the baring retainer. Tip of pickup is magnetized, and has a steel center in the middle of a steel ring, with a Bakelite ring separating them, like a bullseye.

I have an Extech "wave meter" I call it, poor man's sort of in between DMM and scope.

It will display periodic waveforms on a LED display up to about 1MHz, it says. It has to be periodic, no transients and all that you can capture and store.

Well, I have the instrument head, already installed in the dash, and its associated sending unit. So I will simply connect them up as instructed by the instructions, and spin the sender, and see if the head registers. If it does, fine, that means both parts work. If not, one or both parts are faulty, and I may as well discard. You can buy GPS-based speedometers now for not a lot of money.

Curiously, the OEM speedometer in the Flxible Clipper was also electric; a massive instrument head weighing about 2 pounds, and a sender I have not seen. Might be based on selsyn motors.

There is an O'scope dongle for laptops. It's an ongoing project called Thunderscope, and can display up to 4 traces. I'm thinking, though, that one could simply load the Audacity audio program (freeware) onto a laptop, and feed the signal under examination into the audio line-in port of the laptop. Varying the time-base, one could get a clue about waveform and amplitude.

Fate did indeed smile on me early yesterday morning. During that, Orion had just come up, sideways low on the horizon. For my latitude here, the storied heliacal rising of Sirius should be about 8/12 or 8/13, under ideal conditions.

Heavy clouds moved in low over the eastern horizon around 5:30. But I went out again, at 6:08AM, and looked at the right spot. Amazingly, a little hole opened up in the clouds, just a few degrees wide. And there was Sirius, twinkling. It lasted about 5 seconds. It was about, per Stellarium, 7 degrees above the horizon and pretty bright twilight.

So, I saw it. If I were an ancient Egyptian, I guess I'd be really excited.

+++++++++++++++++

This is why I think Trump should have blown off that whole trial to begin with. Just never even showed up for a single day in court and continued to campaign around the country. Let the silly mock trial go on without him, getting faker and hollower by the day as it went on with the defendant missing via blowing off the bench warrant. By the time the sentencing comes around, it would be hollower and more laughable than ever.

Now the big day will be huge, and if Trump blows it off, it will look like a massive act of cowardice and lawlessness. If he shows up, what are the chances he'll be escorted out in cuffs and taken straight to prison?

Speaking of Andy Griffith, it saddened me to find out he was nothing like Andy Taylor, or even Matlock. He was Big Asshole, even a Big Dick.

Years ago, one of my mother's friends was at some place in NC, some hotel to-do place. Andy Griffith was there. She decided to go up and speak to him, "Why hello, Mr. Griffith, it's such a pleasure to meet you!"

His response was basically, "Buzz off and go fuck yourself". When she first told that, I thought well maybe he was just having a bad day, maybe being bothered by a bunch of fans and tourists and just got enough of it.

Nope, I later learned that was just who he was. Big Asshole.

525 Morning, fellow insomaniacals! A restless night, though the total time unconscious was not too bad. I've discovered that smoking even a small pipe with a mild blend in it in the evening is as bad as drinking coffee. It doesn't keep me awake but I'm up every two hours to hit the bathroom. I guess it'll be morning pipes only from now on. It's s shame, as a pipe is relaxing after work and before dinner. Ah well.

'Tis Thursday, and we are on the downhill run to the weekend. How's it going for you?
