It's Okay When They Do It

The amount of damage to anything loosely definable as "truth" that has been brought about by the American (and beyond) news media cannot be overstated. News coverage is, at absolute best, disingenuous as a baseline. Whether it's deceptive framing or outright direct lies, the news media are remarkably consistent in their prevarications. It's been a while since they told the truth even by accident. As with all things on the left, they are also shot through with projection.

One of the news media's favorite complaints and criticisms of dissenters is invariably "deceptive editing" or accusations that something was "taken out of context." Whether you did it or not, you will be accused of it. When they do it, you're expected not to have the poor taste to mention it. Those paragons of objectivity over at CNN just provided us with a prime example (clips via Not The Bee):

So what's the problem? There they are, cracking wise about Hiroshima. Clearly, these are bad people and not "presidential." In fact, Trump is clearly dangerous. Dana Bash said so, and provided the receipts, right? No, of course not. It's the American news media. Of course it isn't right. Even if CNN weren't brazenly guilty of everything it accuses :: spins wheel :: James O'Keefe of, it's still pretty damn weak sauce - but that is beside the point.

The actual discussion was not about nuclear war, but about nuclear power. Specifically, nuclear power's safety record and the much more manageable than expected after-effects of the major atomic disasters at Chernobyl and Fukushima, and the resurrection of Hiroshima and Nagasaki after the atomic bombings:

Is this "deceptive editing?" Yeah, it probably qualifies. Is it "out of context?" Definitely. CNN literally stripped out the preceding context, snagged 15 seconds from the wind-down and presented it as the entire story. It doesn't get more "out of context" than that. And it's funny because it's not like there was nothing CNN could have used in that interview. Trump didn't sound great and his speech was a bit slurry. Other outlets are running with that because substantially, the interview was pretty good. Not CNN, though. They're "above the fray" or somesuch and just went straight to the direct lies. Unfortunately for CNN, however, the interview is out there and anyone who cares to can go watch it.

Even CNN knows it. As Ace wrote yesterday (old threads, warnings, etc.), CNN's asserted objectivity is now treated as a "laugh line" even on brain-dead late night talk shows where the audience overlap is likely quite significant. But we shouldn't pick on CNN too much. After all, CNN isn't special. CNN is just one of many in the vast, undistinguished, undifferentiated morass of the American press.

When it comes to the press, it's always just lies and projection. If there is any upside whatsoever to social media, it's that this basic truth is now easier to spot and harder to ignore.

When I listened to the audio it appeared to me that they both were a little *off* in what the other was talking about. Trump was talking about nuclear in the sense of war, while Musk seemed to want to talk about nuclear energy.

It's why, eventually, the Party is going to have to deal with Musk. They tried to kill Twitter and are still trying, but it has proven to be remarkably resilient. If they can't destroy Twitter, they have to bring it back onto the plantation and that means dealing with Musk.

SpaceX is probably literally keeping Musk alive at the moment. Without SpaceX, the US does not have a remotely functional space program at this point. Whether on purpose or not, Musk made himself strategically important to the United States and that makes him hard for the Party to contain.

The press used to be transparently partisan. That was a better situation than the fake-ass "objective" media concept. It's why papers had words like "Democrat" and "Republican" in their names.

This phony "objective press" nonsense started with broadcast. The airwaves belong "to the public" and are licensed to broadcasters. Since it's a public asset, they must not be used for any particular partisans. The press must be "objective" to remain on the air.

So they faked it for a bit - not well, but nonetheless they did it - until they didn't need to. So now we still have a partisan press, it just only represents *one* Party. In the Before Times, the partisan press was multi-partisan.

First, a very SHORT list, of MSM on air figures, who check out as OK or at least, largely so. They'll be rare, but there's sure to be what... two or three? Betcha they're in Podunk, AL size stations though.

Next, and maybe more important. The News Directors (they choose what WILL or will NOT be the stories that go on the air). The News Copy Writers (scripts), the Editors. The Teleprompter Readers give voice and face to what's written *for* them to say.

But the real poison is in the writings. Frankly, I'd posit that a literal decimation of the writers and editors, would have quite the salutatory effect on the "readers", and if not, then it's Decimation II, the Sequel.

It's been happening quietly, except for the very public DEI rebukes.

The education sector is a prime target because their national union chief is a loon. Legislators are done with it. They fund the schools, and are tired of the lip. I understand that different people have different likes, and that for Trump, it isn't just about communicating information, so while I don't watch his rallies, it seems that he knows what he's doing, at least to some extent. I had graduate classes with budding 'journalists' from a well regarded university. The topic was analyzing presidential political campaigns. In general, these proto- journalists in the class were know nothings, lazy, and innumerate.

Enrollments are going to keep declining. The value position just isn't there anymore for far too many people.

And the demography within the colleges isn't helping. It turns out that when there are significantly more women than men on campus (excepting female-only schools, of course), female enrollment starts to drop, too. That is correlation, not causation, but the one-two punch of lopsided admissions and piss-poor value is a serious headwind and we haven't even gotten to the insanity yet.

Enrollments are going to keep declining. The value position just isn't there anymore for far too many people.

And the demography within the colleges isn't helping. It turns out that when there are significantly more women than men on campus (excepting female-only schools, of course), female enrollment starts to drop, too. That is correlation, not causation, but the one-two punch of lopsided admissions and piss-poor value is a serious headwind and we haven't even gotten to the insanity yet.

She most likely has genitalia that doesn’t really resemble either sex well, and considering where she is from, was raised as a female her entire life. She may not even have been told she was different. She has xy chromosomes, but she isn’t transgender. Wife and I spent two hours at a Waffle House somewhere in Missouri after visiting Grandpa in Arkansas. Wonderful people, cooks waitresses, customers. And the food was outstanding. Part of why I love visiting the South. So different from the polite, but aloof people of Colorado.

A good friend I had in college, way back when, went to medical school and has been a very successful oncologist for about 35 years. She might be retired now.
Another friend got her MS in polymer chemistry, and she has been working as a powder coatings technical sales women for about 25 years. Before that, she was a chemist for Glidden Paints and then SC Johnson.
I don't know about you guys, but I know a bunch of professional women that work as scientists and engineers.
Gwynne Shotwell is COO of Space X. She is a VERY smart women. And on, and on, and on.....

Sure. But that isn't what I said. I didn't - and neither did anyone else - that women aren't chemists or that women aren't physicists or that women aren't mathematicians.

But women who do decide to enter the hard sciences are more *likely* to choose biology and medicine. It's more common for there to be a female biologist, doctor, etc. than for there to be a female physicist.

That's all. Trends exist. Trends do not imply that universality.

In terms of "real politik" I honestly don't see too many reasons for the U.S to "get involved" again anywhere.
It is indeed costing us a tremendous amount of money to act as the "world cop", and a LOT of countries really resent it, especially when we use means to screw with other's economies.
I don't really want to pick a side in the Ukraine-Russia war. What we should have done was to
1) prevent it (which Blinken did not)
2) Work to end it (which we are not doing)

Hundreds of thousands are dead and crippled for no really good reason.
