Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Wednesday Morning Rant![]() So what's the problem? There they are, cracking wise about Hiroshima. Clearly, these are bad people and not "presidential." In fact, Trump is clearly dangerous. Dana Bash said so, and provided the receipts, right? No, of course not. It's the American news media. Of course it isn't right. Even if CNN weren't brazenly guilty of everything it accuses :: spins wheel :: James O'Keefe of, it's still pretty damn weak sauce - but that is beside the point. The actual discussion was not about nuclear war, but about nuclear power. Specifically, nuclear power's safety record and the much more manageable than expected after-effects of the major atomic disasters at Chernobyl and Fukushima, and the resurrection of Hiroshima and Nagasaki after the atomic bombings: — Davy Jones (@itsNTBmedia) August 13, 2024Is this "deceptive editing?" Yeah, it probably qualifies. Is it "out of context?" Definitely. CNN literally stripped out the preceding context, snagged 15 seconds from the wind-down and presented it as the entire story. It doesn't get more "out of context" than that. And it's funny because it's not like there was nothing CNN could have used in that interview. Trump didn't sound great and his speech was a bit slurry. Other outlets are running with that because substantially, the interview was pretty good. Not CNN, though. They're "above the fray" or somesuch and just went straight to the direct lies. Unfortunately for CNN, however, the interview is out there and anyone who cares to can go watch it. Even CNN knows it. As Ace wrote yesterday (old threads, warnings, etc.), CNN's asserted objectivity is now treated as a "laugh line" even on brain-dead late night talk shows where the audience overlap is likely quite significant. But we shouldn't pick on CNN too much. After all, CNN isn't special. CNN is just one of many in the vast, undistinguished, undifferentiated morass of the American press. When it comes to the press, it's always just lies and projection. If there is any upside whatsoever to social media, it's that this basic truth is now easier to spot and harder to ignore. "The amount of damage to anything loosely definable as "truth" that has been brought about by the American (and beyond) news media cannot be overstated. News coverage is, at absolute best, disingenuous as a baseline. Whether it's deceptive framing or outright direct lies, the news media are remarkably consistent in their prevarications. It's been a while before they told the truth even by accident. As with all things on the left, they are also shot through with projection."

That was a better situation than the fake-ass "objective" media concept. It's why papers had words like "Democrat" and "Republican" in their names. This phony "objective press" nonsense started with broadcast. The airwaves belong "to the public" and are licensed to broadcasters. Since it's a public asset, they must not be used for any particular partisans. The press must be "objective" to remain on the air. So they faked it for a bit - not well, but nonetheless they did it - until they didn't need to. So now we still have a partisan press, it just only represents *one* Party. It isn't just the media. Here's an excellent example of the rot and lies that have permeated the education establishment. You'd think there'd be a correlation between grades and scores on standardized tests for the same material. You'd be wrong. Now, see if you can guess for which ethnic group the disparity is largest. Why, it's almost as if grades are being inflated to cover up an underlying lack of achievement. Of course, that won't be a problem once the deficient students are advanced to the next grade or to a university which their scores, but not their grades, say is too rigorous for them.
Most grades don't match test scores: Is that a problem? More than 40 percent of middle and high school grades are too high, compared to standardized test scores, and 16 percent are too low, concludes a new study conducted in 2022 and 2023 by the The Equitable Grading Project https://tinyurl.com/sywjkd66 Posted by: Archimedes at August 14, 2024 11:17 AM (xCA6C) 76

We need to revive that monniker. But, OUR "list" will be towards an entirely different purpose and goal. First, a very SHORT list, of MSM on air figures, who check out as OK or at least, largely so. They'll be rare, but there's sure to be what... two or three? Betcha they're in Podunk, AL size stations though. Next, and maybe more important. The News Directors (they choose what WILL or will NOT be the stories that go on the air). The News Copy Writers (scripts), the Editors. The Teleprompter Readers give voice and face to what's written *for* them to say. But the real poison is in the writings. Frankly, I'd posit that a literal decimation of the writers and editors, would have quite the salutatory effect on the "readers", and if not, then it's Decimation II, the Sequel. /burningtimesdreams Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at August 14, 2024 11:19 AM (kQgoX) 80

The problem now is social media, not the dying dinosaur news media on tv. Their audience has shrank to where the average age of their watchers is nearly 70 years of age. "Social media ranks as the most popular daily news source among adults between 18 and 44 years old, and, interestingly, 45 to 64-year-olds were marginally more likely to go to social media to keep themselves up to date than to watch network news. It isn't widely known, generally until it is too late, but you cannot have civilization itself, without a "high trust" society.
It isn't technically possible, nor will it pencil out economically. Most of us grew up thinking things are permanent - like running water, or regular garbage pickup, police, fire, and ambulance service, plowed roads, reliable and plentiful electricity, all those things require enormous expenditure and technology. You start seeing all the retail outlets close down, because they are not profitable. Anything not nailed down is stolen or fenced. Bars over everything, concertina wire, broken glass. Everything falls apart, because it is too expensive to maintain with a constant hemorrhage of good money after bad. Then it collapses in a sea of contradictions. Posted by: O.W. So. "Our Precious Democracy!" involves specifically targeting and tailoring messages to marginally literate people who cannot process facts, logic, or reason?
Has it ever been adequately explained in detail how, while people can be extraordinarily stupid individually, but en masse, a curious thing happens, and suddenly become wise and intelligent and will ultimately choose the best leaders? Universal "Suffrage" was (in hindsight) one of the dumbest stunts ever, it can't have been accidental nor well intentioned. I'm not speaking about Women per se, simply that enlarging the franchise to anyone and everyone who can fog a mirror is profoundly stupid. Posted by: O.W. But women who do decide to enter the hard sciences are more *likely* to choose biology and medicine. That is where we get dragged into stupid wars across the globe that bankrupt us and kill our military members for nothing. Posted by: whig In terms of "real politik" I honestly don't see too many reasons for the U.S to "get involved" again anywhere. I don't really want to pick a side in the Ukraine-Russia war. Meanwhile, well connected people do better than anyone, and communism makes that glidepath even easier while tapping into the resentment you speak of. That's the true evil genius of it.
Posted by: ... True for normal history--not necessarily revolutionary history, the connections can have a downside during something like the French Revolution. Guilt by association is very common in that sort of disorder. Ci devants is not a term heard much anymore but the French Revolution acted like a giant scythe on the French elite of the ancien regime. Same echoes of that in Cambodia, Iran, Chinese, etc, in their revolutions. The smarter elites fled at once; the passing phase types/it can be fixed types believing in their own personal invincibility died or were imprisoned for lengthy sentences.
