The evolution of backpacks revolutionized hiking. Generations of Boy Scouts carried canvas packs with shoulder straps, or "Trapper Nelson" style packboards.
All of the weight is carried on the shoulders. This is quickly very tiring. Improvements started small, with the addition of a thin waist strap. In the 1960s, with the widespread adoption of Nylon, gear makers settled on elaborately padded and wrap-around waist belt, which moves the weight bearing or center of gravity centered on the waist, and only a small part carried on the shoulders. Backpacking would never have become a hobby without this. I preferred Jansport backpacks, though Kelty and Trailwise were very, very good. Posted by: O.W. X-ray analysis of the painting reveals that the beard originally stretched all the way to the left border of the painting, but the artist didn't like the balance of compositional juxtaposition, so redid it. Artistic license.

Colin Fletcher was a WWII veteran of the Royal Marines, ended up in the US and decided the best way to see America was to walk. He hiked the length of California south to north, in 1958 when nobody did that sort of thing. He wrote several books on hiking, documenting his adventures. He also became one of the first to hike the entire length of Grand Canyon.
Since he was Welsh he could eat anything, I guess. Settled on Wilson's certified meat bars, gravy and mashed potatoes. Every. Day. Rounded it out with lots and lots of carbs, as he was hiking up to 18 or 20 miles a day carrying 60 pound pack. He did take kind of a scientific approach to protein/fats/carbs. He published his weekly ration, and it came out to 4 pounds of pure sugar if you count the pound of Raisins, and chocolate, and powdered lemonade and things like that. Posted by: O.W. Most of us would never have heard of the myth of The Wandering Jew in public school or religious education classes. My MIL (who says "Redbird" instead of "Cardinal" because in her day Old Order would not use Catholic words) calls that garden vine "Wandering Jewel" -- since saying "Jew" in any form in the 30's was taken as an epithet, out in the country.
After a review of the catalogue, it strikes me that Mel Brooks' and Carl Reiner's classic "2000 Year Old Man" routines were worked-over Wandering Jew jokes. And you don't drink it, ya schmuck, you soak your feet in it! Posted by: Way,Way Downriver at August 14, 2024 09:55 AM (zdLoL) 152

I have a set of "trekking" poles. The idea is to adjust the height to a specific tailored to your size or height. I often just use an old ski pole. Very helpful and helps I think with maintaining rhythm or pace. The trick is to be able to maintain a pace without having to pause all the time to rest or "catch your breath". Like Fletcher, I take a 10 minute break or so every hour whether needed or not.
Slow and steady definitely wins the race when long haul hiking or up mountains. Watch the young guy take off like a jack rabbit up the mountain, he will get lapped by people who know what they are doing. Posted by: O.W. Holmes at August 14, 2024 09:59 AM (cMU4o) 168
Courbet's theme is how wealthy, important, possibly even titled Gentlemen of High-Born Blood recognize The Artist as their spiritual and intellectual superior. There's a funny anecdote about how Beethoven schooled Goethe in that idea, which got really big and popular at the turn of the 19th century.

First, the word ‘gussie’. This was first used in Australia in the early 20th century as a name for a foppish dandy. The Australian feminist novelist Miles Franklin used it in her best-known work My Brilliant Career, 1901, to describe a soppy Lothario to whom she gives the unambiguous but mocking name of Everard Grey:
“I’ll show him [Everard] I think no more of him than of the caterpillars on the old tree there. I’m not a booby that will fall in love with every gussie I see. I hate and detest men!” ‘Gussie’ was a contraction of the name Augustus, which was the generic name for Roman emperors. Posted by: AlaBAMA at August 14, 2024 10:01 AM (q7hip) 176

Well that's just it, isn't it? He was eating healthy, since he was carrying a 60 pound backpack up to 20 miles a day, he was still losing weight.
4 pounds of sugar over the coure of a week isn't bad at all, in this context. He was burning as much as 4,000 or 5,000 calories a day. In fact, refined carbs were the only way to physically carry enough calories, more or less in digestible form. Sugar is deadly to the sedentary, that's the problem. What was predictable perhaps, in later editions of his book he disavowed the food list in his '68 book, and was a proponent of low-fat and low-calorie, and decided Spirulina tablets, a type of algae, was the wave of the future. By the 1980s, dietary quackery was in full swing, and even Fletcher (or perhaps the editors/publisher) was not immune. California rots yer brain, unfortunately. There is no way he could have completed his trek without a diet providing enough calories. Spirulina ain't gonna do it. Posted by: O.W. Holmes at August 14, 2024 10:09 AM (cMU4o) 220

Annual inflation rate slows to 2.9% in July, lowest since 2021
Source: CNBC Wage growth was still at 3.6% last month, so wage growth is still easily outpacing inflation and has been for over a year and a half. Covid made low wage workers re-evaluate their priorities, they weren't going to risk their lives for starvation wages anymore. The wage growth has been significantly more pronounced with lower wage workers. In fact, the bottom 10% of earners saw the biggest growth in wages, the top 10% actually saw wages go down. My entire life, I was told that "the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, and nothing will change that." Well, the numbers show that the last 4 years that wasn't true. The bottom 50% saw their net worth increase by more than the top 1%. The bottom 10% wage earners saw raises while the top 10% saw wages go down. There is still a worker shortage, especially highly skilled workers. My company is doing everything they can to retain talent. Robust raises, expanded bonuses, stock awards, etc. etc. You cannot afford to let top end talent leave. This may mean 50 point interest rate cut September! The Los Angeles chapter of If Not Now shared images of the protesters holding up signs on the freeway to commemorate a Jewish day of mourning and fasting. 'To all those stuck in traffic, we sincerely apologize for the disruption to your day,' the group said in its Instagram post. 'We are especially sorry to the working class people whose lives have been affected. As a cross-class organization, we have a deep understanding of the impact of this kind of action. However, we also know that what hurts working class people more than standstill traffic is our tax money being spent on military aid to Israel while working families struggle to make ends meet in our own communities.' . . . Michael Oren, meanwhile published an essay begging the US to support Israel. Somebody started a meme saying the Starliner/ISS thing reminds them of those old word problems where you have a raft, two chickens, two foxes, and have to get to the other side kind of thing.
They aren't too sure about the safety risk of a crewed undocking. At the same time, the capability for an uncrewed undocking and re-entry - autonomous - is not incorporated into the current software. In theory, all sorts of things can potentially happen, that need to be considered. A crewed or uncrewed undocking that went seriously awry could damage the ISS itself, or the docking ring. They don't have press conferences any longer? Because everyone has to be NASA-ologists now, reverse engineering cryptic statements to try and figure out what's going on. Very weasel word-ish pronouncements, vague and third person kind of word salad. They keep talking about "test" this and that, yet they did send a crew up on it. Is it safe, or not? Clearly "not" has the upper hand here. I can't imagine (at this point) they send the Starliner back crewed, so this means after a 7 year delay, the astronauts will be coming back to Earth on a different spacecraft. Maybe not, but we're gonna find out soon. Posted by: O.W. Holmes at August 14, 2024 10:47 AM (cMU4o) 367

Posted by: Angzarr the Cromulent at August 14, 2024 10:42 AM (XMwZJ) ++++ This is extremely common, and it is not a lefty/prog thing or exclusively their problem. There is a serious, widespread problem of people conflating income (affluence) with wealth (net worth) with liquidity (cash or easily-convertible assets). "He earns $125k, he's rich" is a terrible assessment. Affluent people are more *likely* to be wealthy, but affluence and wealth are not the same things, and wealth isn't necessarily spendable without a lot of friction and discounting. There are plenty of affluent people who are broke as hell (I know some of them) and plenty of middle-income people who have a decent net worth and can weather a financial storm and have an emergency fund. It's better to be middle-income and responsible with some money in the bank than to be affluent and broke, with liabilities piled to the moon and no liquid capital cushion - but the affluent guy with no money is "rich" and the middle-income guy who can survive a problem is just a rube. 276 DO NOT QUOTE Trolls.
To be fair, when the nics keep changing, it can be hard to keep track of who is a troll vs who is just stupid. Posted by: Oddbob ------ That tis the rub. One can prevent that but that also prevents AOS trademark sock puppetry. Or one can do registration that creates a database identifying who the posters are. Third is to charge per post which doubtless would be popular. So far, option four which is to allow the trolls but permit them to be relentlessly treated as chew toys for the real commenters. The primitive and proprietary nature of AOS software prevents the really bad robotrolling you see on Breitbart or Insty. Conservative Treehouse also rolled their own software to prevent all sorts of poo flinging troll monkeys. Posted by: whig at August 14, 2024 10:49 AM (7nYLv) 380

Posted by: whig at August 14, 2024 10:52 AM (7nYLv) ++++ Yup. Debt-fueled consumption is a recipe for disaster. You can more easily get away with it if you're young, because you're likely at the bottom of your earnings and can afford to cheat a bit because you're probably going to be earning significantly more in the relatively near future and can pull out of the dive. It gets more and more dangerous the more you earn and the older you get. If you're earning $150k and spending every penny of it and then some in your 30s or 40s, you're probably boned. Jobs paying that much are *very* hard to come by, and your high-rate wage growth is behind you. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at August 14, 2024 10:54 AM (HnUIn) 396

From a sociological perspective, nothing destroyed the family - basic building block of any society - more thoroughly than "Welfare" of the 1960s.
Quite literally, intact families were ineligible for "assistance", and thus fatherless homes headed by "single mothers" dependent on the kindness of strangers for the very fiber of their being became the norm, and not just for "minorities". Such an arrangement can only be devised or considered acceptable by outright monsters. We're living in the result of this, and other "inexplicable" government rules, procedures, laws, etc. It is nice to live under the delusion that government will allow us to live at the expense of someone else. It "works" for a little while. A government big enough to give you everything you want is big enough to take everything you got. Humans have to re-learn pretty much everything, every generation? Democrats at the national level, rhetoric wise are like the slow kid who really belongs in a separate class for the short bus people. We waste decades explaining stupid shit to them, that they should already know, shit that was gamed out 3000 years ago, but they insist "this time it's different". Posted by: O.W. It also has to do with the condo collapse that led to govt intervention into the insurance market there.
Posted by: BruceWayne The government involvement in insurance is because commercial insurers want no part in it. Already, in most of the US, commercial insurers are essentially paying for roofing repairs from normal wind, hail, etc. and elevated houses in small lot subdivisions with no large trees suffer a lot of damage. Home designs are a lot more 'sophisticated' regarding rooflines, multi-level, etc. than the humble ranch style homes and as a result--suffer more wind damage to roofing and it is more expensive to fix. So, condo owners of well designed modern hurricane resistant construction, wise home owners that did likewise, etc. are all thrown into the pot for determining rates because you will pay rates on the lowest common denominator. That is why No Fault car insurance states have literally insane premium levels compared to at fault. Posted by: whig at August 14, 2024 11:05 AM (7nYLv) 431
