The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“This country is going down, and these people are bad people that we’re running against. And they’re liars. They make statements. They do things that are so bad. They say they’re going to make a strong border. They say they’ve been great on the border, and they’ve been the worst in history. They say they’ll stop crime,” President Donald J. Trump

Quote II

"Getting zero points on purpose in three rounds for an academic study subsidized by the taxpayer both at a university and Olympic level isn’t funny and isn’t ‘having a go’, "(It’s) disrespectful to other competitors. I’m glad most Aussies aren’t buying the Kool-Aid," Professor Megan Davis.

73 Meanwhile, in Ukraine:
1. The Ukrainian attack into Russia is contained, at about 20 miles deep. They still manage to make some probes and assaults which send the armchair generals of the internet to their fainting coaches.
2. One new feature of the attack was the use of deep fake videos, which used a fake Russian governor declaring a panicked evacuation to block road traffic for incoming troops.
3. The Russian response has been slowed by their difficulties in coordinating the multiple forces which have scrambled to the area.

If he’d just said, “yeah, I was in the Guard for over twenty years. Then they said we’re going to give you a promotion and you can lead your men into our new endless war and I said screw that, I’m outta here” he probably would have real support for that than the loss he’s getting for the lie he did tell.

Posted by: Anna Puma at August 13, 2024 10:37 PM (en9Xr)

It is happening in the area of Kursk. It more resembles the Battle of the Bulge, and we know how well that worked out for the Germans. Supposedly it was going to be:
1. Gather the last of the army's resources.
2. Smash through the lightly defended lines and capture the nuclear power plant at Kursk (they got halfway there.)
3.
4. Russia surrenders!

Congress needs to pass a law: if person X is elected then no one related, upto second cousins, can ever serve.
We have a lot of nepotism in the USA, also quasi-nepotism where a close friend of the incumbent gets a shove-in to a cushy job just by a good word (or you owe me a favor so hire this person). In small towns it's often difficult for a new resident to get a good job as vacancies are filled by family or friends even before the ads go out.

186 It's not "just" the politicos and their spawn that keep a seat in congress. The kids have infiltrated the lobbyists, the judicial system, media, etc.

Take Pelosi's daughter for example. Ticks. Embedded in the system.

Not a day goes by were we discover someone's kid is in a position of authority or influence. Always a Democrat.

Hunter Biden is the epitome of this sort of thing. This is a real and significant problem.

I know it's humor and all but I have to disagree.

For a long time, drunk drivers were given a slap on the wrist, at worst, unless they actually injured or killed someone. Drunk driving was treated like domestic violence, often overlooked with a nod and a wink. I had family almost killed by a drunk driver, their car was rolled when it got hit. He was so drunk he didn't know what happened. Found out later it was his 3rd or 4th DUI, but still on the streets.

The penalties definitely needed strengthening at the time, back in the '80s.

It's still not great in some places, where someone's license gets revoked for the 3rd or 4th time and somehow they wind up back behind the wheel. To which I always ask, "How'd they get the car?" Formal car dealers want licenses just to test drive, informal dealers still have to run things through the DMV to transfer titles, so what does that leave? Borrowing a friend/relative's car, who most likely knows that the driver has no license (especially when they've done jail time). Should they get charged with aiding and abetting? Probably, but you never see it done... which is how we keep winding up in these messes.

262 DUI laws did change some aspects of "settled law".

Essentially, driving drunk wasn't prima facie evidence or a crime a priori. That had to be done via "implied consent" laws.

You drink a six pack. Drive home. Nothing happens. Where is the crime? I'll not argue this is my idea or that I agree, but it did require a different approach. America is not good with "in between" sometimes. One extreme to the other. Then: Nurses selling cartons of discounted smokes to patients in hospitals. Now: Swat team deployed for a lone individual smoking on a deserted beach somewhere. Careful getting pulled over, you might have driven by a liquor store in the previous couple days. That's reasonable suspicion.

270 People don’t understand the situation with Omar; this is not a joke, she is the public face of a large Somali organized crime family that runs that district and adjacent areas. You see much the same thing in Mexico, Latin America; the “family” will choose someone who can masquerade as a politician and advance their interests publicly. There is no chance of someone like that losing in an area they control.
The Democrats goal is to turn the entire US into that.

1. The Ukrainian attack into Russia is contained, at about 20 miles deep. They still manage to make some probes and assaults which send the armchair generals of the internet to their fainting coaches.

Certain laws did need to be toughened, like domestic violence, but the pendulum swung so hard the other way MGTOW becomes a thing. Listen to all women. But don't believe them. Until after an investigation. Like cops do with every other type of crime.

* It's also what makes America schizophrenic on the world stage, parties in power lurching back and forth.

I learned to break a bone - once. That was enough of a lesson. That and the humongous needle they used to inject the numbing agent into my wrist area, with a geyser of blood shooting up out of my arm, before they jerked both arm bones back into place. Out there in the desert the crows talk to men

I came across a 1000# black dead cow in the middle of NV 447 under the Bonneville power lines around midnight. The small car that hit it was actually off on the shoulder about 30 yards away front end totally pushed in.pushed in. The two young men in it were somehow unhurt.

A young woman came out of the darkness stood next to me and asked if it was dead. She walked away into the desert. Another car soon came along and the jump seat
passenger was yelling for Sarah. Asked me if I seen a anyone. I pointed away in the desert.
I was waving a flashlight at the semi truck that didn't slow down and he hit the cow disabling it's front tire. Cow moved a few feet into the lane. I couldn't light flares because wind and lots of desert vegetation.

Sheriff showed up 45 minutes later. Asked me if I seen a black Audi. Audi appeared! And cops talked to driver. Passenger was yelling for Sarah again. It drove away. I gave cop a statement and left.

Don't mess around in the desert.

Anyway (as MushBrain used to say, and prob. still does), I'm up, I'm sipping coffee, what more d'ya want??

MushBrain and The Older Ho were in my vicinity yesterday morning and afternoon, to announce a big health-related grant to my work. It didn't disturb me, thank goodness. And when they left about 4:30, they went west toward the airport -- the opposite side of the city from my path home. If they'd used the airfield on my side of the river, it would have taken me hours to get home. Why do politicos always end up disrupting rush hour?

467 Socializing after work? I've never been much of one for that. When I worked at the courier company, there was one of my co-workers, a stocky Jewish lady who preferred her own team -- but liked people in general. She was smart and a big science-fiction fan, so we hung out on occasion. (I always suspected she had an eye for Mrs. Wolfus No. 2 as well.) Aside from that, I didn't socialize like that often, either in my drinking days or after.

My boss insists that my co-workers and I have a lunch with him at least once a year. I'm responsible for setting the date and making the reservations. I dread the hell out of it.

486 Wolfus-- some cats just don't *do* laps. Mine is one of them. He dislikes being picked up, too.

It's okay. My previous cats were lap-hogs, to the point it was actually obnoxious. Could not sit down, without one of them jumping up. It was great until I had to use the restroom... LOL

487 What's your latitude?

38.8048° N, 77.0469° W

More or less. I'm just south of Alexandria, VA. The city/county line is a stones throw away.

And now I got the Buffett song in my head.

It's later there sidereal, and they'll be a bit higher in the sky and more to the west, azimuth wise, but pretty close to me.

True. Stirling likes to sit on me at least once a day. The late Marie-Antoinette flung herself into my lap whenever I sat down and kneaded me strongly with (fortunately clawless) paws. (I didn't do it, she came declawed.) The late Chekov liked it, but insisted I put a cushion on my lap for him. Et cetera.

494 Sounds...sticky, Wolfus. Ugh.

We had a nice drenching rain yesterday, and cloudy/cool all day. Today will be a steambath because the clouds are now gone. Back into the oven for another couple weeks....

Sticky ain't in it. Your hands feel as if coated in glue as you walk from the office or house to your car.

I wish we'd get some rain. It'll be no less humid, but the temp can drop from 98 to 88 at least.
