Posted by: andycanuck (i0CiB) at August 12, 2024 09:43 AM (i0CiB) 75
A tronie is a type of work common in Dutch Golden Age painting and Flemish Baroque painting that depicts an exaggerated or characteristic facial expression. These works were not intended as portraits or caricatures but as studies of expression, type, physiognomy or an interesting character such as an old man or woman, a young woman, the soldier, the shepherdess, the "Oriental", or a person of a particular race.
The main goal of the artists who created tronies was to achieve a lifelike representation of the figures and to show off their illusionistic abilities through the free use of color, strong light contrasts, or a peculiar color scheme. Tronies conveyed different meanings and values to their viewers. Tronies embodied abstract notions such as transience, youth, and old age, but could also function as positive or negative examples of human qualities, such as wisdom, strength, piety, folly, or impulsiveness. These works were very popular in Holland and Flanders and were produced as independent works for the free market. https://tinyurl.com/4x7htx79 Posted by: andycanuck (i0CiB) at August 12, 2024 09:43 AM (i0CiB) 76

Brouwer's work had an important influence on the next generation of Flemish and Dutch genre painters. Although Brouwer produced only a small body of work, Dutch masters Peter Paul Rubens and Rembrandt collected it.

I've been watching some Youtube channels dedicated to "mudlarking" at low tide on the Thames or other places in Europe, Holland Belgium, etc. Amazing how many clay pipes are found like the one in the painting. From the 1600s, 1700s, and more modern. Along the Thames, many Roman or even pre-Roman artifacts are found. We are a young nation, comparatively, if you discount the Injuns, and who doesn't?

Posted by: RIP UK ----- What is happening is that in the UK, like the US, the allegedly Conservative party is disintegrating due to its lies to its own constituents over the years. Happened in Canada with the Progressive Conservative party in the 80's and the Whig party in the US in the 1850s. Eventually, either the Tories fix themselves or they die with a new party taking over. Eventually, in a first past the post system, you get back to a two party system including UK (see Duverget's law) and you will always have a coalition government of greater than two parties where proportional representation is used for the legislative branch. Three legs kind of makes sense when your floors are all uneven. Of course, it will also tip over easier so everything's a trade-off.
Posted by: Oddbob at August 12, 2024 10:20 AM (/y8xj) ++++ One of my three-legged tables has a nice gouge/chip in the surface (it is in the back corner now) because of a tip-over. Posted by: Kramer at August 12, 2024 10:31 AM (DobEs) ++++ They exist. I do not recommend them. They can be really beautiful - it was somewhat common in midcentury furniture design - but an oblong shape with three legs is a decidedly unstable configuration. Sneeze at one, and it will fall over. There are alternate approaches to it (one leg at each end of the front, a very wide leg in the rear center), but those look awkward. Long tables need four legs. Or six. Three is just bad news.
