There's an old tradition in fiction, now a cliche, of having doctors be drunks. Of course this guy, if he's about to do "surgery," is probably the town barber; they handled that sort of thing in the 1630s.

Not sure if there is a tradition about drunken barbers.

From the 1600s, 1700s, and more modern. Along the Thames, many Roman or even pre-Roman artifacts are found. We are a young nation, comparatively, if you discount the Injuns, and who doesn't?

What is happening is that in the UK, like the US, the allegedly Conservative party is disintegrating due to its lies to its own constituents over the years. Happened in Canada with the Progressive Conservative party in the 80's and the Whig party in the US in the 1850s. Eventually, either the Tories fix themselves or they die with a new party taking over.

Eventually, in a first past the post system, you get back to a two party system including UK (see Duverget's law) and you will always have a coalition government of greater than two parties where proportional representation is used for the legislative branch.

One of my three-legged tables has a nice gouge/chip in the surface (it is in the back corner now) because of a tip-over. The cat manages to tip one sometimes, but it's rare. The chip is courtesy of an extremely athletic little girl who misjudged the stability of it while using it as a jungle gym.

That said, that's a hell of a picture. She's gorgeous, but is it bad that I also noticed that it's a wonderful photograph? It terms of staging, composition, lighting, etc., that's a great photo regardless of the beauty of the subject.

They exist. I do not recommend them. They can be really beautiful - it was somewhat common in midcentury furniture design - but an oblong shape with three legs is a decidedly unstable configuration. Sneeze at one, and it will fall over.

There are alternate approaches to it (one leg at each end of the front, a very wide leg in the rear center), but those look awkward.

Long tables need four legs. Or six. Three is just bad news.

Yeah, and that's one of them. The lighting is all wrong for color. The photographer set up this shot for the medium in use, which was black and white film. She knew what she was shooting, on what she was shooting, and how to optimize it. If she had been shooting in color, I am sure the lighting and possibly parts of the composition would have been radically different.

The Razors Edge - Grahame Green's novel made into a mess where the lead character is turned into what is essentially a shiftless, trust fund, rich bum with no purpose in life but to "seek knowledge"...

You want to yell at the screen "Get a job, you waste case" for most of the film...don't watch unless you're prepared to waste a couple of hours on dreck.

301 The first half is riveting. It bogs down a bit when he gets into having to go through a long long list of archeological sites and makes the same argument over and over. Necessary from an academic standpoint but not super interesting. The rest I did enjoy.
