Top Story

Users are fleeing X (formerly Twitter) in droves and signing up for Threads (Meta's, which is to say Facebook's, Twitter clone), except that not a single word of that is true. (Tech Crunch)

In an article that looks suspiciously like legitimate reporting, Tech Crunch looks at claims circulating on Threads, finds them false, and spills the beans.

In reality Twitter's user base is growing, and Threads is stagnant at best.

Tech News

A critical security vulnerability affects almost all AMD processors built since 2006. (Tom's Hardware)

It only affects systems that have already been hacked at the kernel level, so you don't need to worry. If you're using cloud servers, you don't need to worry, because they don't allow root-level access.

But if you are using dedicated servers in a datacenter - which I am - this is potentially a nasty problem. To guarantee a previously used system is clean the datacenter would need to directly rewrite the BIOS using a debug cable.

AMD has already issued updates for pretty much all their CPUs, so this reduces the scope of the problem signficantly.
Tim Peters, a core member of the Python development team, has been suspended under the project's Code of Conduct for raising concerns about the Code of Conduct. (The Register)

A 512-bit RSA key gave a user access to an entire network of home energy systems. (Ars Technica)

512-bit RSA keys were first broken by researchers in 1999, and by 2015 could be broken by anyone for a few dollars in a few hours. I've been using 4096-bit RSA keys for years.

Dell is pretty good at pushing out updates. Or you could use the service code for your box to get access do every driver/update for your particular machine ever released. This support feature is very handy if you ever have to rebuild a box from scratch and is so robust I could download everything needed for a box I owned in 2005.

82 Morning techies. Hubby nec is having a problem while typing emails. For some reason while typing it just stops and he has to look up often to see if his words are still registering in his emails. I bought him a new wireless keyboard, updated the drivers and software and disabled his hot keys. Disabling the hot keys since I thought he might be accidentally depressing one while typing and moving the placement of the cursor while typing. Nope, still having the problem. Any ideas? I'm not a techy so hope what I typed make sense.

191 Mrs. Cop and I attended the Fatima USA Mass at Maria Stein (Ohio) last night. Hundreds of Catholics gathered to celebrate an outdoor Mass. There were about 20 priests and deacons, and about 30 acolytes.

The celebrant, Father Nathan Cromly, celebrated Mass ad orientum (i.e., facing the East to offer the sacrifice to God, rather than facing the congregation) and spoke most of it in Latin. His homily was pretty fiery, and boiled down to: don't let the secular world make you afraid, trust in Jesus, and bring His message of love and salvation to the pagans.

Then we prayed to Rosary. Lots of traditional hymns and a procession of the Blessed Virgin. I'm sure it made the Modernists unhappy!

It was a great Mass. It's the second time we've attended. Next year is scheduled for August 8, 2025, I believe.

"Fatima USA" is at a retreat center located next door to the former Mother-house of the Sisters of Precious Blood (it's now a museum). Located at Maria Stein, it's a rural part of Ohio that is very Catholic.

His homily was a bit long: he spoke for about 45 minutes. However, he was passionate and basically was telling the laity "Don't be pu$$ies" (OK, I'm paraphrasing a bit) and have the courage to fight evil. I think the Holy Spirit was guiding him.

We have great priests at my home parish, but the typical homily lasts about 20 minutes.

There is a growing recognition by the younger priests (Fr. Cromly appeared to be in his 40's) that Mass needs to be celebrated ad orientum. Where they can, they do; where they can't, they're jut waiting for the old Hippy priests to die-off.

Our newest controversy in our church being used by the useful idiot to leave the parish is about the opening ceremony of the olympics. Father condemned it and now a couple families left for other parishes. Always amazed at what sets people off. If you believe it was innocent talk to Father about it, don't leave in a feigned huff. I think they're trying to get out of our building campaign.

Same. I was in the city not long ago, I had a left turn arrow, and a pair of cyclists opposite me in the intersection just rode on into my path, and looked at me like I was the one trying to kill them.

I bought a copy, and a brief scan shows that it is a worthwhile book. Basically, how to take a leadership role in society based upon St. Paul's epistles.

We had couple (appeared to be in their 30s) walk out in a huff last year because they got upset by Fr. H's homily castigating the Dodgers honoring the anti-Catholic hate-group "Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence." They were back a month or two later.

My feelings are go or stay, I don't care. As for myself, my family and I serve the Lord. He's knows who's neither hot nor cold.
